Our sermon time this week was a multi-sensory experience. First, we listened to a clip from the podcast “Ask Science Mike,” as Mike McHargue gave us an introduction and background to visual and experience-based prayer. Then we tried out one of those experiences, with five minutes of a candle prayer. You can find the full "Ask Science Mike" podcast episode here: https://liminalventura.org/sermons/ask-science-mike-live/

What happens when you start to question the moral foundation you grew up on? In this episode, Steve and Leo sit down to have another conversation about programming but begin to notice similar principles behind law, society, its mores, and even religion. Leo grew up a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, a Protestant-Christian denomination distinguished by its observance of the Sabbath (on Saturday) as a sanctified day of rest. While studying the Bible, he started noticing circular logic and other problematic reasoning which led him to question assumptions from his upbringing and begin to let go of his faith. As an INTP, reworking his beliefs wasn't personally as challenging as the fear of disappointing his family because leaving the faith could be interpreted as jeopardizing his soul and a cause for separation from the ones he loves. What's clear is that both Steve and Leo have had to do a lot of thinking surrounding issues of faith and community. Steve and Leo also talk about free-will, cults, workaholism, burnout and depression. This program is part of the Created Equal and Breathing Free podcast series presented in partnership with Florida Humanities. There are few areas of the culture war with deeper and more consequential divisions than the ongoing clash between faith and science. And just like with our other divisions, we're having difficulty navigating the complexities of both faith and science without falling into our angry tribes (tribes that diminish either faith or science). Rather than having an ongoing conversation of substance about how to apply our exploding understanding of the world around us to solve problems, our communication descends into name-calling and made-up “facts” that support what we want to believe is true (but isn't necessarily). People of faith feel attacked and marginalized in a world where rapid scientific and technological advancements seem to outpace our ability to use them wisely. Rabbi Jack Romberg is back to facilitate this program. Joining our panel is FSU Physicist Dr. Harrison Prosper, on the team at CERN in Switzerland that discovered Higgs boson, referred to by some as the “God particle.” Bringing a deeply personal perspective to the conversation is Mike McHargue – or Science Mike – who talks faith “in an age where science explains our world so well.” We're also delighted to be joined by Fr. Matthew Busch of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The name for this program comes from the insights of a former Catholic nun, author Karen Armstrong – that mythos (intuition, wisdom, meaning) and logos (rational, pragmatic, and scientific thought) are simply different ways of knowing.
Mike Mchargue, also known as ‘Science Mike', is a podcaster of very long-standing. He was formerly co-host of 'The Liturgists' and host of ‘Ask Science Mike' and he's now host of 'The Cozy Robot Show'. He's also the author of ‘Finding God in the Waves' and more recently ‘You're a Miracle and a Pain in the Ass'. He speaks about the process of losing his childhood faith and subsequently finding his way to contemplative Christianity via science and an ecstatic experience, his sacred value of equity, how we as humans tend to process trauma when we leave a tribe, and why he thinks it's really important for him to publicly identify as disabled. For the first (!!!) episode of the Living Centered Podcast, co-hosts Miles Adcox and Lindsey Nobles sit down with author, podcaster, host of the Cozy Robot Show, and friend, Mike Mchargue—whom you may know (and love) as "Science Mike." Mike is not only incredibly brilliant but is one of the most authentic and feeling-aware humans we know. His uncanny ability to communicate complicated concepts in a practical, applicable, and matter of fact manner helps us bridge the 18-inch gap between our heads and our hearts. During their conversation, Mike shares how connecting deeper to his emotions and addressing his past adversity has allowed him to show up more fully human and make sense of the complex world we're all living in. Who gets to be a writer? It’s a question so many people ask themselves. On today’s episode, I chat with some voices you’ll recognize, including Science Mike and therapist Elyse Snipes as well as a new voice: Rafik Wahbi, whose program with hip hop writing helped men in jail feel a sense of empowerment over their own stories. We talk about the voices we’ve silenced and the importance of diversifying the content we consume. We need you. Your voice matters. Today’s guests will remind you why. This is the third episode of a special series that’s all about the power of a writing process to create positive change in your personal life. We’re covering topics like why writing can be so challenging, what’s happening in your brain when you write, why writing is therapeutic, what it costs us when voices are silenced, and what a regular practice of writing looks like in real life. The best part? With today’s episode we continue the second series of Faith Made Welcome, a progressive podcast on faith brought to you by Commonwealth Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia. If you listened to our last two episodes you know that that this multi-part episode features an in-depth discussion about the intersections and relationship between faith and science. As with our prior episodes, this one features Faith Made Welcome regulars Robin, Marty, Cheri and Paul (if he wasn’t a regular before, he is now!) and Dr. Graham Walker, Marty and Robin’s Theology professor from seminary! In this episode of the podcast, Paul pivots the conversation toward the creation vs evolution debate. Together Graham and the Faith Made Welcome Crew discuss the narratives regarding creation and human evolution, and explore the points of tension that arrive as communities of faith and communities of science attempt to reconcile what we know (and don’t!) about our beginnings. Throughout this portion of the conversation, Graham makes reference to a diagram that helps him to organize different schools of thought related to perspectives on creation and evolution; if you’re a visual person, you may wish to download and review it as you listen! He has also kindly offered a more detailed handout and accompanying PowerPoint presentation for those who might want to dig in deeper! About Dr. Graham WalkerGraham is a professor at McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia. He describes himself as someone who has been working with “the interface between science and theology for a long time.” He’s worked with Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion, a program through the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) that focuses on facilitating dialogue between scientific and religious communities. Scripture Mentioned this EpisodeGalatians 4:4Genesis 1 and 2Genesis 3 Additional Materials Mentioned this EpisodeWe’ve elected to list these references in the order they appear:ichthys (ἰχθύς): Graham begins his discussion of this debate with reference to this Christian symbol and the means in which debates about creationism often play out on bumper stickers that make different arguments involving the ichthys fish.Scopes Monkey Trial: Graham discusses the role this trial played in the overall discussion of creationism vs evolution in American education, making reference to major players like Clarence Darrow and William Jennings BryanFlat Earth Society: As Graham walks through different interpretations of creation, he begins with discussion of flat Earthers, who he says take a literal Old Testament model for their understanding of the planet.Ptolemy: Graham references a ptolemaic approach to understanding creation, which is built upon Ptolemy’s geocentric model that argues that the Earth is the center of the universe.Young Earth Creationists: Graham notes that these folks believe that the earth is between 6 to 14 thousand years old, based largely upon the genealogy presented within the scripture.Biblical Archaeologists: Paul and Graham make reference to this school of research, which uses archaeological method at sites references within the scriptures.Old Earth Creationists: Graham notes that these folks emphasize that the scriptures are meant to be a parable that demonstrate that God created, but allow space for science to explain the nature of that literal creation. Sola scriptura: Graham references this theological perspective which places sole authority in the scripture, which are understood to be infallible by believers in this tradition.Gap Creationists: Graham explains that these folks look for time gaps within the scripture, such as between that which they argue may have occurred between the two creation stories within Genesis.Day-Age Creationists: Graham notes that this tradition frames the understanding of a day within the creation story to be more expansive than our notion of the 24 hour period.Progressive Creationism: Graham notes that Bernard Ramm is a key theologian from this tradition who used the concept of fiats to explain the orderly process through which God created all things found in evolutionary history.Evolutionary Creationism and Theistic Evolution: Graham explains that both of these schools of thought argue that God uses evolution; he says to them “that’s just how the creator creates.”Edward Wilson: Graham makes another reference Wilson’s exchanges with his former pastor, which is a reference to the opening of The Creation.Materialistic Evolution: Graham argues that this belief - that the observable is all there is - does take a kind of faith commitment of its own. He notes that folks like Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris are making a statement of faith through their position as materialists. Gordon Kaufman: Graham notes that theologians who have studied a lot of science, like Kaufman, would argue that God is within the act of creation itself.Brian McLaren: Robin mentions McClaren’s writing as a good starting place for folks who want to continue work to explore the intersections of faith and science because McLaren references science and creation care in his work. McLaren also explores challenging questions; his book Faith After Doubt is a good example of this excellent writing.Mike McHargue: Robin also recommends McHargue’s work and his podcast, Ask Science Mike, in particular, which explores the bridges between faith and science.Lonnie Rich: Marty gives a shout-out to the wisdom of this beloved church member (who we’re hoping will join us on the podcast soon!)Terence McKenna: Paul references McKenna’s belief that ideas should be able to stand up to scrutiny. Douglas Kelly: Graham notes that Kelly has emphasized the importance of listening to others as a kind of spiritual practice.John Bunyon: Graham says that Bunyon described our faith journey as a pilgrimage.Rachel Held Evans: Robin references her book Searching for Sunday, which traces Held Evans journey away from and back to faith. About This PodcastThis podcast was envisioned as means to foster spiritual growth and conversations about faith, both within and beyond the faith community at Commonwealth Baptist Church. At the open of this episode, we discuss what spiritual formation means to our CBC pastors and the role community plays in our concept of faith. We have been working on a documentary for over a year about The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The full documentary will be released on September 22, 2020 and we will be hosting a live stream that same day with the people who produced it including William Matthews, Jamie Lee Finch, Christian Adkins, Anna Jane Joyner, Karlin Itchoak and others. To find out more visit https://theliturgists.com/arctic As we prep to launch the film, we wanted to re-release this episode from October 2019. In the last 3 weeks the refuge has come under even more severe threat as the Trump Administration takes steps to open it up for drilling. In August of 2019, Michael Gungor, Science Mike, William Matthews, and Jamie Lee Finch embarked on a trip to the Arctic circle to experience some of the last untouched wilderness on the planet and hear from the Gwich'in people. The Gwich'in are Athabaskan-speaking Indigenous peoples who lives in the Arctic region of Alaska and Canada. Their sacred lands include areas within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In September 2019, the Trump Administration said it would "seek to open up the entire coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas exploration, picking the most aggressive development option for an area long closed to drilling" to cite The Washington Post. The violence and destruction caused by the removal of long standing protections by the United States is difficult to overstate. This episode is the story of our trip to that area, and what we learned from the people there. We want to give a special shout out to The Wilderness Society for making this episode possible and to Dan Ritzman from Arctic Wild for his guidance in Alaska.

My guest is Mike McHargue. His newest book is You're a Miracle (and a Pain in the Ass) (https://www.amazon.com/Youre-Miracle-Pain-Ass-Understanding/dp/1984823248). Why is there such a gap between what you want to do and what you actually do? The host of Ask Science Mike explains why our desires and our real lives are so wildly different—and what you can do to close the gap, in this his newest book. For thousands of years, scientists, philosophers, and self-help gurus have wrestled with one of the basic conundrums of human life: Why do we do the things we do? Or, rather, why do we so often not do the things we want to do? As a podcast host whose voice goes out to millions each month, Mike McHargue gets countless emails from people seeking to understand their own misbehavior—why we binge on Netflix when we know taking a walk outside would be better for us, or why we argue politics on Facebook when our real friends live just down the street. Everyone wants to be a good person, but few of us, twenty years into the new millennium, have any idea how to do that. In You’re a Miracle (and a Pain in the Ass), McHargue addresses these issues. We like to think we’re in control of our thoughts and decisions, he writes, but science has shown that a host of competing impulses, emotions, and environmental factors are at play in every action we undertake. Touching on his podcast listeners’ most pressing questions, from relationships and ethics to stress and mental health, and sharing some of the biggest triumphs and hardships from his own life, McHargue shows us how some of our qualities that seem most frustrating—including “negative” emotions like sadness, anger, and anxiety—are actually key to helping humans survive and thrive. In doing so, he invites us on a path of self-understanding and, ultimately, self-acceptance. You’re a Miracle (and a Pain in the Ass) is a guided tour through the mystery of human consciousness, showing readers how to live more at peace with themselves in a complex world. Special Guest: Mike McHargue.

Julia and Victoria have not stopped talking this book since it came out in April, so they decided to put their ongoing conversation on tape. In You’re a Miracle (and a Pain in the Ass), science expert, empathetic public speaker, and hard-core nerd Mike McHargue (known professionally as Science Mike) dives into the core of what it means to be a human in the twenty-first century. Starting with the essential question, “Why do I do things I don’t want to do?,” this book covers everything from the ways technology and pizza are shaping social justice movements, to how an understanding of brain structure and core emotions can lead us into radical self-love and acceptance. An essential read for any human being who feels feelings and thinks thoughts.

It was an energetic and fun conversation that covered a number of topics from science, physics, materialism, idealism, the Cosmic Christ, spiritual experiences, religious pluralism, divine action, and more. Ohhh and you hear how this Oxford Philosopher went from being an atheist to an idealist and then converted to Christianity in India. Keith Ward is a British philosopher, theologian, priest and scholar. He is a fellow of the British Academy and a priest of the Church of England. He was a canon of Christ Church, Oxford until 2003. Comparative theologyand the relationship between science and religion are two of his main topics of interest. He was Regius Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford from 1991 to 2004. Don't forget to check out some amazing free lectures of Keith. Literally quality, zesty, nerdy, and free lectures. This is a live podcast from the Jesus Rode a Dinosaur: Talking to Youth about Faith in a Scientific Age conference with Science Mike. Science Mike cuts right to the chase and asks Tripp some important questions about theology: How is theology even a thing? How does one know what is a right or good theological framework? Then they chat about the ways in which the Enlightenment ruined theology, why valuing beauty is the most appropriate place to begin doing theology, the two biggest tasks of the church today, and why atheist philosophers have begun to use Christian theology. Later, Astrophysicist Paul Wallace joins Science Mike and Tripp to talk about doing good science while also believing in a creator, feeling connected to a quasar, his relationship to other scientists, and why physicists are more prone to be idealists and believe in a transcendent reality, and Paul talks a little about his upcoming book about the relationship between and faith and science. Kenda Dean also joins to talk about parenting, helps figure out what we tell our children about God (especially when we don't know what we think about God), the new questions kids are asking, and what we can do as parents of faith to make sure that our children know they are loved. Plus, David Hume and miracles, the industry of ministry, and a Q&A with questions about morality, mystical experiences and psychedelics, youth ministry and anxiety, depression and medication, and a lot more.
