In this week's Flightless Bird, David Farrier looks at why Christmas is the OG holiday in America. He brings back Mike McHargue from the very first episode of Flightless Bird to talk about how religion and commerce mix. In 2021 Americans spent $800 billion on Christmas-related purchases and this year it looks to soar to new heights! Mike and David delve into the origins of Santa Claus, before David takes a trip to “Holiday Road,'' a giant Christmas display in Calabasas. Finally, David calls his mum/mom in New Zealand to discuss what it was like giving birth (to him) on Christmas Day.
Rutendo and Sebastian get to indulge their passions for nature AND superheroes, as they look at real-life superpowers in nature. Rutendo explores how these superpowers inspire fictional worlds and heroes with evolutionary biologist Mike McHargue. Mike helps writers and film-makers integrate accurate and consistent science into their stories, and together he and Rutendo invent a brand new superhero. Rats seem unlikely superheroes but in Tanzania they're being trained to save lives. Their acute sense of smell means they can detect landmines, and sniff out illegal wildlife being trafficked in shipping containers. We drop in on their training at non-profit organisation, APOPO. Sebastian's favourite superhero is Spiderman, whose spider-sense gives him advance warning of impending danger. This superpower is used every day by real spiders whose special leg hairs can sense vibrations. Web-building spiders use this superpower to build a mental map of the world around them by detecting and decoding the tiny vibrations created by anything that touches their web. Through a special program designed by experts at MIT, we hear a digital version of this experience, turning the web into a musical instrument with thousands of unique notes.Credits:The BBC Earth podcast is presented by Sebastian Echeverri and Rutendo Shackleton. This episode was produced by Rachel Byrne and Geoff Marsh. The researcher was Seb Masters. The Production Manager was Catherine Stringer and the Production Co-ordinator was Gemma Wootton.Podcast Theme Music was composed by Axel Kacoutié, with mixing and additional sound design by Peregrine Andrews. The Associate Producer is Cristen Caine and the Executive Producer is Deborah Dudgeon.Special thanks to:Isabelle Szott, Lily Shallom & Said Mshana from APOPO and producer Charles Kombe for the recordings.Science consultant Mike McHargue from Quantum Spin Studios.Markus Buehler from MIT for providing the spider web soundscape. This week on Flightless Bird, David sets out to understand religion in America. Joined by Dax and Monica, he tries to figure out why over 200 million Americans are Christians, and how uniquely Americanized this religion has become - with franchises, brands, and celebrity endorsements. David talks to Mike McHargue - a Baptist who became an atheist who then became a Christian again. We discover how someone can love both Christianity and science - and you may be very surprised to learn your brain may well believe in God… even if you're a stone-cold atheist!

This program is part of the Created Equal and Breathing Free podcast series presented in partnership with Florida Humanities. There are few areas of the culture war with deeper and more consequential divisions than the ongoing clash between faith and science. And just like with our other divisions, we're having difficulty navigating the complexities of both faith and science without falling into our angry tribes (tribes that diminish either faith or science). Rather than having an ongoing conversation of substance about how to apply our exploding understanding of the world around us to solve problems, our communication descends into name-calling and made-up “facts” that support what we want to believe is true (but isn't necessarily). People of faith feel attacked and marginalized in a world where rapid scientific and technological advancements seem to outpace our ability to use them wisely. Rabbi Jack Romberg is back to facilitate this program. Joining our panel is FSU Physicist Dr. Harrison Prosper, on the team at CERN in Switzerland that discovered Higgs boson, referred to by some as the “God particle.” Bringing a deeply personal perspective to the conversation is Mike McHargue – or Science Mike – who talks faith “in an age where science explains our world so well.” We're also delighted to be joined by Fr. Matthew Busch of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The name for this program comes from the insights of a former Catholic nun, author Karen Armstrong – that mythos (intuition, wisdom, meaning) and logos (rational, pragmatic, and scientific thought) are simply different ways of knowing.

Mike McHargue is a science expert. He has a podcast called The Cozy Robot Show. He has worked with companies like Marvel, Apple, and the New York Times. Today, we cover all kinds of territory from the science of empathy to the psychobiology of mythology and emotional optimism. Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation: Understanding the psychobiology of mythology How a given spiritual belief system impacts the culture of a society Having a sense of intellectual humility What is empathy? What is empathetic skepticism? Empathy comes from the deep brain, not the right brain Mike’s thoughts on emotional optimism Episode Highlights: Understanding The Psychobiology of Mythology Psychology and biology as two interconnected things that are not divisible. In other words, you can't conceptualize the brain without the mind. The psychological groundings in human behavior don't make sense unless you look at the brain. The notion is that our thoughts and feelings come from our bodies, but our bodies also shape our thoughts and feelings – forming an interconnected system. Having a Sense of Intellectual Humility We seem to be excited to learn from each other. It is easier to see all of the worlds when we share and receive the perspectives of others as well as the tools they've used to understand reality. And when we have that kind of sense of intellectual humility, it opens up an opportunity for us to grow. What is Empathy? Empathy is the ability to be in touch and aware of our own emotions, and to be aware that other people have their own emotions as well. In some way, our feelings are shaped by our experience with another person. And we're aware that each person has their own emotional life. Unfortunately, there's a massive collapse in the awareness and practice of empathy in people's lives. Empathy alone can actually lead to some dangerous places. Because if our empathy would cause us to dismiss or ignore the harm of what a serial killer did to the victims, for instance, then that empathy is incomplete, which introduces a real potential for cognitive dissonance in our lives. What is Empathetic Skepticism? Empathy is absent in a lot of skeptical people who think critically and who are aware of the conflicting value systems in our world as well as some of the harm that happens in our society. They think so critically that they tend to forget that human emotion is the primary motivator for human action. Therefore, it's important to be able to combine being in touch with our emotional, intuitive core, and having our thoughts and feelings work as peers, instead of having our thoughts stand superior over our feelings. That way, when we're faced with real, polarizing issues in our society, we can lean into empathy to act as a bridge, where we make people safe and at the same time, and at the same time, have an informed discussion so we can come up with pragmatic solutions that will further expand our empathy. The Deep Brain Empathy doesn't come from the right brain, but from the deep brain, composed of our brain stem and our limbic system. Those are the older parts of the brain trusted to solve our problems. But most of the problems in our society today come from too little awareness of deep brain activity, hence, too little connection with our feelings.
This week's show is a Deconversion Anonymous episode. My guest this week is Sarah. Sarah says she may have one of the “longest deconstruction stories. She grew up in a fundamentalist Baptist church in an area where there were not that many Baptist churches. So she felt different from an early age. She was constantly attempting to live in the “will of God” but struggled to determine what that was. She knew from an early age that she was a doubter which equates to “backslider.” Sarah was never comfortable with the limited roles allowed for women in the Church. Fortunately, her mother encouraged her to do and become whatever she wanted. Sarah was smart and interested in science. Studying science and biology did not fit the Young Earth Creationism she was taught at church. Sarah and her husband were the one couple who were egalitarian while the young married couples group were all complementarian. Sarah was vocal about her thoughts on complemntarianism. Sarah spent a long time outside the United States. When she returned to the United States she was shocked by the Christian Nationalism she heard from the pulpit. Rachael Held Evens, Mike McHargue and David Hayward helped Sarah through her deconstruction. Today post-deconstruction she is interested in finding her “deconstructing friends” in real life.
