EPISODE #81 - Lisa Gungor is an artist, author, yoga instructor, and a facilitator in Yes Collective's new Root Work Immersive Circles. When she was introduced to the Yes Collective team, she was just "Lisa" the yoga and ecstatic dance teacher. So not only does Lisa have a super fascinating story, she's an all around amazing human being. So, we had to have her on to talk about her journey, what led her to make such a monumental move away from Christianity and "the church," and how she came to facilitate retreats focused on a this-world sacredness. Calvin Moore, Kent Straith, and Steve Phelps continue their conversation discussing the March 2022 cover story of Christianity Today, "You're Not Deconstructing?" Is deconstructing one's faith bad in and of itself? How do we weigh church/spiritual abuse against deconstruction? How do we address deconstruction due to faith not aligning with a person's lived experience? What is the human's limitation when trying to conceive of their faith? What does it mean to "wrestle with God"? Website www.progressivechristianreview.com launching August 1, 2022.
When being right is more important to you than being in relationship, difference and questioning become something to fear. And fear shuts down connection and curiosity.Unattended grief and rage are fertile ground for fear to have a party with our capacity to stay curious and welcome the discomfort of doubt and questions. And trust cannot exist without the ability to share and question the norms and beliefs of a community. When we lead or are led this way, questions become a threat to belonging and status quo. And when you are in the public eye, there seems to be even less room for doubt and more momentum for digging heels into being right, at the sacrifice of relationships and dignity.Today's Unburdened Leader guest and her husband lost friends, community, and much of their livelihood when they started to question some of the foundational tenets of their beliefs, which were deeply intertwined into their community.Instead of their doubt and curiosity being welcomed and honored, their questioning came at a great cost that reflected that many in their community were more invested in being right over their relationships.Lisa Gungor has been scribbling down songs since she was seven years old. A maker at heart, Lisa studied art in college, and in 2005 she began recording and traveling with the band that eventually turned into the two-time Grammy-nominated musical collective known as Gungor. She has new solo music under the name Isa Ma, and is co-founder of Sacred Feminine.Listen to the full episode to hear:How Lisa's beliefs and identity got publicly subsumed, first with her band then with her husband's questioningWhat Lisa learned from the solidarity of the friends and community members who stuck by themHow Lisa found her songwriting voice while struggling with her faith and infertilityWhat embodied leadership means to LisaLearn more about Lisa Gungor:Isa MaSacred FeminineInstagram: @LisaGungor, @Isa_Ma_MusicThe Most Beautiful Thing I've Seen: Opening Your Eyes to Wonder, Lisa GungorLearn more about Rebecca:rebeccaching.comWork With RebeccaSign up for the weekly Unburdened Leader EmailResources:Paths to God: Living the Bhagavad Gita, Ram DassThe Psychedelic Explorer's Guide: Safe, Therapeutic, and Sacred Journeys, James FadimanAwakening the Body, Will JohnsonWomen Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype, Clarissa Pinkola EstésEverything Everywhere All at OnceThe Princess Bride

Singer-songwriter and author Lisa Gungor’s life was all coming together. She’d married her college sweetheart and was establishing herself as a successful musician. But cracks began to form when her husband told her he no longer believed in God, they were asked to leave the Church she helped start, a close friend died, their baby baby girl was born with two heart defects, and her musical career began to unravel. But through the depression and despair she slowly began to let go of what she thought was true, and began to see hope and new life through these hardest of experiences. Lisa Gungor thought she knew her own story: small-town girl meets boy in college and they blissfully walk down the aisle into happily ever after. Their Christian faith was their lens and foundation for everything—their marriage, their music, their dreams for the future. But as their dreams began to come true, she began to wonder if her religion was really representative of the ‘good news’ she had been taught. She never expected the questions to lead as far as they did when her husband told her he no longer believed in God. The death of a friend, the unraveling of relationships and career, the loss of a worldview, and the birth of a baby girl with two heart defects all led Lisa to a tumultuous place; one of depression and despair. And it was there that her perspective on everything changed. The Most Beautiful Thing I’ve Seen tells the story of what can happen when you dare to let go of what you think to be true; to shift the kaleidoscope and see new colors and dimension by way of broken pieces. Lisa’s eloquent, soul-stirring memoir brings you to a music stage before thousands of fans and a front porch where two people whisper words that scare them to the core. It is the story of how doubt can spark the beginning of deeper faith; how a baby born with a broken heart can bring love and healing to the hearts of many, and ultimately, how the hardest experience in life often ends up saving us. Few books have the ability to make Julia cry, but this one definitely did. Lisa Gungor’s 2018 memoir discusses the themes of motherhood and the divine feminine, and follows the ups and downs of being a Christian celebrity who loses her faith. Join us as we discuss how these themes intersect with our lives, and whether or not spaghetti is a good visual metaphor for evolving belief systems.
For years I have connected with the heart, beauty, and honesty of the Grammy-nominated band, Gungor. I recently had the chance to speak with Lisa Gungor of the musical duo. Lisa is a gifted singer/songwriter who now writes music for her solo career, “Isa Ma.” Lisa also recently released her first book entitled "The Most Beautiful Thing I’ve Seen: Opening Your Eyes to Wonder."In her book, Lisa details formational events in her family life; the beautiful, the painful, and how all of it has transformed her. In my time with Lisa, she vulnerably speaks about seeing beauty in all things, including in life’s broken places and within herself.
In this episode, we share one of our private meditations that our patrons get access to each week. Lisa Gungor leads the meditation and it is called "You Are Safe" We’d love to hear from you! Lauren Evans and Lisa Gungor talk about creative flow and how people who create art, music, and other creative work can make what is right for them. Finding her authentic voice served as an important life quest, because Lauren’s early work required her to be a creative chameleon. Lauren also talks about her life growing up, her spiritual experiences, and how the typical separation of “secular” and “christian/religious” did not mean as much to her in her journey. Lisa recounts how she had positive experiences within her church upbringing, but how she also found it difficult to write great music until she embraced what she is good at instead of following the typical path. Deconstruction is a term you have probably heard bounced around recently with departure from the faith of prominent Christians Marty Sampson and Joshua Harris among others. Jeff recently listened to a Christian podcast about Deconstruction and Reconstruction and it made him reflect on his own past experience. Hey, friends! Thanks for joining us for Episode 4 of this season. You picked the right day to tune in. We're chatting with Lisa Gungor, a wife, musician, and mama to two girls, one who has Down Syndrome. Lisa is one of the curators of the two-time Grammy nominated musical duo "Gungor,” the author of the book "The Most Beautiful Thing I've Seen," and a contributor to The Liturgists Podcast. She's a creative soul who owns her influence to shift the Down Syndrome narrative through her music. Lisa and her husband Michael created their band “Gungor” over a decade ago and wrote mostly Christian songs. In their struggle with infertility, they wrote “Beautiful Things.” Later, they would write the song, “Light” to celebrate their second daughter, Lucy, who has Down Syndrome. Having a child with Down Syndrome shocked the Gungors, but it didn't shake their faith as much as leading worship at mega churches did. Join us today as Lisa shares her infamous faith journey, what she believes now, and how Down Syndrome shaped her spiritual world. Lisa Gungor’s faith was the lens through which she viewed her marriage, music, and dreams—all of which the world witnessed through her and her husband’s Grammy nominated band, Gungor. Yet, when the lens was shattered through events like the unraveling of a career, the loss of a worldview, and the birth of a baby girl with heart defects, it led Lisa to a tumultuous place — until it gave way to a new perspective. Michael and Lisa Gungor are on the podcast today. Husband and wife, creatives, musicians, Jesus-followers, Michael and Lisa have created some amazing music over the years and have some phenomenal wisdom on spirituality, creativity, and the personal journey. Michael and Lisa share with great honesty and wisdom about their own personal journey, the challenges and struggles they've had to confront in recent years, and how they've shaped their spiritual and creative journey. The Gungors talk about the creative process and spiritual journey behind their recent One Wild Life album trilogy, and how creativty is both a spiritual and an organic process. They also unpack more of their own spiritual practices, and we discuss together how a real spiritual practice can be as simple as playing with your kids, and the truth about our habits and decisions. Finally, they talk about what's happening in the world right now, the atmosphere of fear, of a force in the world "pulling back from the progress we've made" - and how and why here might be hope for us all. This is truly inspiring, life giving and eye-opening interview, without doubt, one of the most amazing and inspiring I've ever done. Michael and Lisa have such wisdom, humilty and grace, and this is well worth a listen. **** "Spiritual practice is when you are sitting down and training your body and mind to engage with the divine in each and every moment" - Michael Gungor "We often don't make decisions about what we do. We act on habit." - Lisa Gungor "There's a force in the world pulling back from the progress we've made" - Michael Gungor

We reflect a bit on our past episodes, Toby is upset Joey didn’t show HIM his wiener and what not to say to parents who lost a child.
Currently writing a book on these experiences, Lisa Gungor (Gungor Music and The Liturgists Podcast) reflects on the rejection and abandonment from supposedly their Christian community after her and her husband were “found out” to have some unorthodox biblical views. What does parenting look like given her major faith changes? How do her parents process their daughter’s newfound freedom? This and more from Lisa Gungor. Toby and Matt take you a bit behind the scenes of what it looks like to still be doing Emery as 40 year-old men and Joey admits to his buddies, having to re-evaluate their friendships. Gungor - a multi-grammy nominated Christian band - were the toast of the evangelical worship scene. That is until it became clear that Michael was having significant doubts about his faith. This did not go down well among evangelicals, to say the least. So we talk with Michael and his wife Lisa about the impact this faith deconstruction had on their music, their careers and, more significantly, their marriage. Interview starts at 4m 55s.
