Content Warning: Mental HealthDiscord Invite: Discord.plusorminus.xyzSnagged an interview with Russell Collins, creator of the Tears of a Machine (Affiliate) RPG. Granted Tears of a Machine isn’t a Fudge RPG, but the second edition will feature Fudge/Fate derived mechanics with a unique way of utilizing Fudge dice I hadn’t thought of before. This mechanic will not be suitable for all games, but it could lead to some really clever subsystems for otherwise traditional Fudge games.Tears of a Machine is a game about teenagers piloting giant robots and fighting aliens, while trying to deal with all the normal teenage issues. Does that girl in your class like you, are your friends spreading rumors behind your back, will the giant angel your fighting bite its way through the cockpit and obliterate you? Its a pretty clever idea, explored with pretty clever mechanics. We also discuss Accessibility and I’d like to take a chance to plug Jacob Woods Accessible Gaming Quarterly, a Quarterly Zine that explores issues of accessibility in gaming, Russell Collins has taken steps to make his homepage at Robotclaw.info as accessible as possible, and is doing the same with his products so it feels like a natural fit.Just a quick note that we do discuss modeling mental health in this interview, both exploring the psychological aspects of his game, and exploring ways mental health could be explored in games. It doesn’t get too dark, but I‌ do bring up the fact that some mechanics might be interesting to explore even though I wouldn’t necessarily want to see an actual game run with them. Despite the fact that I’ve been stuck at home for over a week now, I haven’t actually made much progress on any of my personal projects. Since the podcast is getting a bit delayed I thought I’d dust off this episode of the now defunct “The OSR‌ Podcast” and share a really great interview I did over there. This was really early in my podcasting “Career” and it shows. You’ll notice a few skips and a couple of artifacts, it was the best I could do to clean it up.In this interview Denis McCarthy talks about his work as an illustrator, we take a trip down memory lane and talk about some of our favorite TSR‌ artists, and we go off on Star Trek for some reason. Even though this is from an OSR‌ podcast, we mostly talk about game design in general in it, so I think you’ll get alot out of it. Head over to Drive Thru RPG‌ and have a look at some of his great Stock Art, which you can use in any of your published projects. Update: Also he is (or at least was) a fellow podcaster. He stopped posting episodes of Ramblings of a Gamer and Artist last year, but there is alot of good material about his Gurps Fantasy games. Also I hope you like the bed music I’m using, its one of the background audio tracks put out by Wes Otis, you should also check out his products here. He’s doing a Deadlands Audio Kickstarter so give that a look. The Drive Thru RPG links are Affiliate Links so they do help support the Podcast. Go Forth and Fudge! We dig into how he made a game that looks so different and yet still manages to play so much like a standard fudge game. We also dig into his history with Comic Books, Supers RPGs, his work on Mutants and Masterminds, why he’s reinvented the wheel a couple of times, and how he also happened to write one of my favorite Shadowrun Supplements of all time. I start the show with a brief intro to the mechanics I’m interested in seeing play out, and then come back with a discussion of what I Thought about them.We did record the session, and it will appear as an episode of The Redacted Files at a later date. I had a blast and definitely recommend the game. If the concept sounds a bit “iffy” just give it a chance, it really delivers in a big way on the premise. One thing I didn’t bring up in the show was how well designed the character sheets were. Every unique mechanic had instructions and points to mark off on the sheet. In Survival of the Able you’re a person with a disability living in a European almshouse when the Black Death arrives. Little is known about where the plague originated or how to stop it, but those who die from it are rising again—and they’re hungry for flesh. Since everyone else has succumbed to the plague, it’s up to a handful of you to make your way out of town and away to safety. I think I need to stop making broad proclamations about how I’m going to do the show and just do it. I’m killing the Patreon as of now, patrons will notice I didn’t put through a charge for the last episode. I really appreciate the patrons I did have, but I’m just doing this for fun. If you get something out of the podcast and you wanna help out with hosting you can still throw me a tip over at http://Ko-Fi.com/plusorminus or you can use any of my affiliate links in the show notes. From now on I“m doing plus or minus whenever I can get an episode in, shooting for at least twice a month. Although I’ll still organize the show as ”seasons“ I”m not going to take time off to do batched content because I just didn’t get it done. With that out of the way, lets talk about Tags! In this episode I try to explain an idea I tried to bang out in the discord. Basically its a half way point between standard fudge, ASCB Fudge, and Fate. Instead of using Fates point economy you just count how many of your characters tags would benefit them, and add that number to your roll, and you count up how many tags would work against them and add that to the opposition. Literally you are adding the number of tags. So if your trying to calm down a horse you might have #Empathetic and #Groom which would make it roll+2 if you had #Nervous tag then you’d be rolling against Difficulty+1 see. Tags replace Skills and Attributes, but can be used with gifts and faults (or badtags). Characters start with 1 Culture Tags, 2 Background Tags, 3 Aptitude Tags and 2 Badtags or troubles.Run with it, let me know how it goes on the Discord, or by providing Feedback. I apologize if it sounds like your sitting in my mouth, I was getting a cold and had the mic closer than I should have. In this episode I discuss the nature, usage, and viability of attribute scores in Fudge. I think fudge gets some flack for being an "incomplete" game or "just a toolkit" because of the nebulous description of how attributes work in the game. Attributes are recommended, but totally optional. Fate Core, arguably the most popular Fudge derivative out there, ditches Attributes entirely. On top of this, if you do decide to use them you don't necessarily have to have every player using the same list of attributes. I touch on most of this in the show. I'll eventually do a treatment of each type of Trait over time. I also talk about raising the profile of Fudge in general. For my part I'm currently doing the podcast, and running a Discord to encourage discussion. As my schedule allows I'd like to do more. I'm going to try a little harder to get a regular group together, I'm also thinking of looking into the hours of local game stores and seeing if there is a time in the evenings where I can run pickup games of Fudge. I'm also considering doing some actual plays. Its contingent on finding a group of willing players, but what I"m thinking of doing is recording the session (with my trusty Zoom H6) and then editing it down to a more reasonable 45-ish minutes, then intersperse asides and rule discussions. So actually, I am going to review a Magical Medley. I've been busy lately, which is why this is coming out a week late. The next episode should come out on time because this is actually one episode split into two parts for time. I kind of rambled a bit, and got off topic here and there, but I decided to keep it all in since I feel like its of some interest to my listeners. This is a pretty extensive review of A Magical Medley from Grey Ghost Games. The review was prompted by some questions on the Discord about magic systems in Fudge. This book is a collection of different magical systems influenced by real world myths, Fantasy, and Science Fantasy. The book also contains an introductory adventure. Since nobody seems that interested in using the voicemail number I'm going to focus more on the Discord, so come join us there to discuss Fudge... and to a lesser extent other RPGs. A quick update to the last episode. The version of Scale I clarified at the top of that episode was a pure fever dream. As such I start this episode off with a clear and consice explanation taken directly from 4.22 and 4.58 of the Fudge 1995 edition of the rules. I also review Another Fine Mess from Grey Ghost Games. Another Fine Mess is an introductory adventure, both for starting players and to explain how fudge games can work to starting Game Masters. Aside from some not-on-the-tin body horror its a pretty awesome adventure you should probably pick up for your next oneshot or offbeat fantasy setting. edit: sorry also for the inaccuracy. Ignore my explanation of scale in this episode. I'll clarify it in the next episode. Sorry. Sorry for the delay, I'm feeling much better. I'm going to try to prerecord an episode or two ahead to prevent this in the future. This episode is all about answering questions, specifically this one: [4:58 PM] Viaken: I've heard complaints that universal systems make everything "feel same-y". Do you all do anything to avoid that? If so, what? This is from the Plus or Minus Discord server, which you can join here. In this episode we delve into the mechanical tweaks that several different Fudge derivatives have used to make themselves play and feel distinct. Specifically I contrast and compare Micro Fudge, Mutant Bikers of the Atomic Wasteland, Fate (Core and Accelerated), and Icons. Additionally I talk a little bit more about scale, a topic I will probably revisit in a few more shows covering specific applications in game design. Seriously, thank you all for waiting, listening, and a big thank you to those of you who have been kind enough to back me on Patreon. I start off by responding to a listener question left on our voicemail at (661) 368-5306 by Johnathan Snyder, who is also one of my Patreon supporters. Hey, this is Jonathan author of Blood in Space. Hey, I was just listening to your last podcast about the damage factors and just wanted to bring up your response about adding different things in with the damage factors, like taking consideration of a fantasy type game where you know certain things are more immune to certain types of attacks, a lot like what the D20 system does, I was wondering what your thoughts are on how something like that could be implemented. I know I put together one a while ago. But yeah, that's just pretty much my thought that came to mind when I was listening to your podcast and was wanting to see if you ever want to cover your opinion on modify the damage factors to take any more fantasy setting with monster immunity and so forth like that. So yeah, thanks. I really appreciate your podcast and what you doing as University and I really hope you continue up. I'm continuing to support you and look forward to your next podcast. This is Johnson. I'll talk to you later. Bye.Transcribed by Google Voice cleaned up by Me.I also talk a bit about the Shadowrun Runners Hub and Emerald Grid, which are really neat solutions to the Looking For Group problem faced by gamers. I floated the idea of a similar setup for Fudge, but as many people pointed out the community isn't quite there yet. Still, I might try something in the vein in the future. Then the episode moves on to cover some considerations for running long term campaigns with the Fudge system. In the last podcast I asked if folks liked terms like Fudge Master instead of just Game Master, and alot of the feedback showed that there was a real blowback against not just that, but also things like calling your game Fudge X or X Fudge and trying to be cute. I think alot of this has to do with the overall criticism the system receives that its more suited for one-shots and convention games than for serious play. In this episode I discuss the +1 Problem, the issues with the default XP system, and ways to allow for character development without focusing on simply raising attributes and skills. I also throw in a new money-instead-of-XP idea I've been working on. Please reach out to me with your Fudge (or Fate/Icons) Pages, Podcasts, Content, and Blogs. I'm going to create Podcast, Resource, and Blogroll pages for them to act as a central resource. Call the show with your Tips, Questions, or Comments: 1 (661) 368-5306In this episode I cover the exciting world of Fudge Damage Factors, all the things that can affect them, and how to use them most effectively. This seems to be a very elusive part of the game for many people, and like THAC0 before it, I think its largely down to poor explanation. Its just a simple way to add up all the different weapon/gear/gift/fault/scale factors that can affect damage, and pre-calculating them to speed up play. Also I bring up the idea of getting a new Fudge Zine up and going. If there is enough community interest I might be able to wedge such a thing in. Maybe done through the Patreon account somehow. Plus or Minus Homepage, Become a Patron, Call the Show! (661) 368-5306In this episode we are going to begin to explore the Scale rules in Fudge. Scale is an often misunderstood part of the game, but probably the most central one. In the show we'll explore exactly what Scale is, how it works, and different ways to use it. Its probably the most important part of the system you've never used. Additionally in the episode I announce my interest in getting some kind of organized play up and running. If you own, manage, work at, or know a guy at, a game store please reach out to me. Fudge Fest Fridays has a certain ring to me... Also could do it at pubs... Just saying. Plus or Minus Homepage, Become a Patron, Call the Show! (661) 368-5306Hello and welcome to Plus or Minus, the Fudge hacking podcast. In this, my very first episode of the show, I give a brief overview of Fudge, its relationship to Fate, and what I've gleaned of that transition from FudgeFactor. I thought it was important to cover this topic as a sort of bonus episode zero for folks coming to Fudge, Fate, or Icons late in the game so they kind of understand the relationships therein. Episodes to follow will dig into more of the mechanics of Fudge in all its varied forms. ... Did you hear me say wroten?
