This week on Shoot the Hostage, Dan and Sarah brave the wasteland of cinema history to grapple with the undisputed heavy artillery of our big old floppy flop season, Tank Girl (1995). Be warned, as is tradition, we swear and spoil. Sarah chose this one and frankly, it feels like some kind of revenge after Battlefield Earth. Released in 1995 this film doesn't just qualify as a flop, it lives in the flop house and pays rent with lint and disappointment. It somehow made more than Empire Records and Police Academy 7, which, let's be honest, is our primary metric for success. Based on the very British, very anarchic comic book series and directed by Rachel Talalay, this 1990s comic book movie should have been a slam dunk, or at least a solid ground rule double. We get into the nitty-gritty of why this felt like such missed potential. Here's what you can expect from this week's episode: Discussions on Lori Petty as Tank Girl (aka Rebecca) and who else lobbied for the role The uncredited, sophisticated (yet visually questionable) work of Stan Winston Studios on the Rippers The surprisingly great soundtrack curated by Courtney Love Dream casting for a potential reboot Ramblings that connect this film to The Warriors, Scott Pilgrim... and, bizarrely, Roy Scheider in seaQuest DSV. Why this comic book movie adaptation ultimately crashed and burned at the box office If you're searching for podcasts about movie flops or maybe just a podcast reviewing box office bombs, retro comic book films, or trying to understand why a film featuring a kick-ass female lead and directed by Rachel Talalay failed so spectacularly, this is the episode for you. Or maybe you just need someone to talk about the fact they made a kangaroo penis for a movie? Look no further! We regret to inform the listener that we are no longer a "SeaQuest DSV" podcast; we are now a retro gaming podcast. We also regret that only some of us are playing retro games at the moment. Adam regrets not going into debt to obtain an old gaming console. Charlie is warned about the heavy metal content of some chips but eats them anyway.
This month we're taking a look at shows that aren't Star Trek, but REMIND US of Star Trek, and the first is a show that asks the question ... What if Star Trek, but wet? We join Captain Nathan Bridger and his crew as they explore the mysteries and adventures found in the Earth's oceans.
In 1993, Roy Scheider took on a journey to boldly go where no man had gone before... underwater! Yes, it's finally time to talk about the two-part pilot episode to Scheider's TV series, SEAQUEST DSV! We also discuss the turbulent production the show faced over the course of its three seasons.
Last week when we first checked out SeaQuest DSV we learned about a man named The Regulator who had an ape friend named Verne (whom The Regulator tried to surgically install gills onto) and sold parts on the ocean's black market. He tried to steal a dolphin so that the mammal could solve the theory of spherical evolution for himNow if you just read that you probably figured there was no way this show could get weirder. Well it turns out you're wrong. DEAD WRONG. And that's because of today's episode of SeaQuest, season one's Hide and Seek, which among other weird things includes William Shatner playing a Saddam Hussein-esque dictator who believes the same dolphin The Regulator tried to steal can heal his son, who may or may not have autism. And by the way, he ends up being right about that last thingAnyway this thing is insane. I suggest you all listen in if for no other reason than for William Shatner talk about weaponized war dolphins
As mentioned, many times, during our last season of Sex Archie, we are following it up with a podcast about a show from the past: seaQuest DSV! Here is the first episode, and you can find the rest wherever you get your podcasts. It's a show with huge swings between (and sometimes within) seasons, characters that deserve better, and a drama-filled production history. Sounds like a successor to Sex Archie to me. So enjoy! And follow us in our wet, wet journey. Website: https://rss.com/podcasts/wskrs/ RSS: https://media.rss.com/wskrs/feed.xml Art by Beedrops Music by Devin Nelson
On November 12, 2003, Jonathan Brandis -- the beloved '90s teen star known for SeaQuest DSV and The NeverEnding Story II -- died by suicide at the age of 27. Brandis, who struggled with his transition from teen heartthrob to adult actor, left an indelible imprint on the entertainment industry during his brief career and serves as a cautionary tale about the difficulties of life in Hollywood. It's the faraway year of 2018 and man has colonized every place on Earth... except for the sea! This means the BTBs head into the damp, deep, fish home that is the Ocean where they encounter the crew of the legendary Deep Sea Vehicle the Seaquest. But as Captian Nathan Bridger discovers not all is well on the massive submarine as everyone's old enemy bureaucracy has raised its ugly head causing a backlog on a very important control chipThe crew turns to less savory ways of procuring the piece and suddenly the SeaQuest and her resident talking dolphin (yes, you read that right) are in danger!Van takes Brian and Spencer on this journey through a show that the latter two didn't really know existed outside of Van's personal memories of it. And they watch as the coolest guy of 'the future' kind of turns out to be a moron. But eventually we'll all return to the circle in the end (it's from the show, just listen in, okay?)!

Stephanie Beacham is without a doubt one of Britain's most talented, beautiful and well-known actresses. Despite becoming world famous and an icon of the 1980s due to her role as Sable Colby in the American soap operas Dynasty and The Colbys and going on to have starring roles in shows such as Sister Kate, Seaquest DSV, Beverly Hills 90210, and Bad Girls, Stephanie Beacham had already carved a solid acting career back in her home country. Born in Hertfordshire in southern England, one of the four children of an insurance executive and a housewife, Beacham began an interest in acting at a young age and studied mime at the respected and renowned school of Étienne Decroux in Paris before completing her studies at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. Guest roles on British television followed in the late 1960s such as The Saint and UFO, however Beacham's breakthrough was her starring role opposite Marlon Brando in the cult horror film The Nightcomers that brought her critical acclaim and widespread attention. She became a regular staple in British horror films for the remainder of the 1970s and early 1980s such as Dracula A.D. 1972, House of Mortal Sin, Schizo and Inseminoid, however she was still a commonly seen face on television, such as being given her own soap opera in Marked Personal as well as regular modelling work. It was in the 1980s however that Beacham's career became supercharged. She had starring roles in the acclaimed television series Tenko and Connie, the latter gaining particular interest in the US.Beacham moved to Hollywood in the mid-1980s and was given the role of Sable Colby in the ABC soap opera The Colbys, and then joined it's parent show Dynasty where she remained until the show's cancellation. Both shows made Beacham a household name on both sides of the Atlantic as the glamour-puss wife of Charlton Heston's character Jason and cousin of Joan Collins' Alexis, with the two regularly involved in a 'battle of the bitches' scenario. Following the cancellation of Dynasty, Beacham headlined the sitcom Sister Kate for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award, before going on to have main roles in Beverly Hills, 90210 as Iris McKay, Steven Spielberg's Seaquest DSV as Dr. Kristen Westphalen and Countess Bartholomew in Star Trek: The Next Generation as well as film roles opposite Christopher Plummer in Secrets and Anthony Hopkins in To Be The Best. Beacham maintained a regular presence on television and in theatre both in the US and the UK for the remainder of the 1990s until she played Phyllida Oswyn in the prison series Bad Girls, a role she would play until the show's end in 2006. She would later have parts in films such as Love and Other Disasters, Moving Target and Wild Oats and played Martha Fraser in Coronation Street. Her theatre credits are extensive and include roles in the West End and on Broadway. Most recently she completed UK tours as Judith Bliss in Hay Fever and Maria Callas in Masterclass. It is the role of Mrs Cheveley in Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband in 1998 that brought her to Australia and it is this production which reunites us both after a couple of decades to reminisce and catch up.The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Spotify and Apple podcasts. This episode contains: We're recording just after Valentine's Day. Sorry, we didn't get you anything, EXCEPT FOR THIS PODCAST! Ben was a bit disappointed in Valentine's Day this year... he's also working on "not wasting his midlife crisis." He chats about layoffs and opportunities and productivity, but Steven thinks that perhaps Ben's having a midlife revelation. Ben's reading The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferris. Steven and Devon have been managing democracy in HELLDIVERS 2. Devon doesn't know how to define video games, or perhaps he knows too much how to define video games. HELLDIVERS is pretty much the video game equivalent of Starship Troopers, with all the satire involved. Steven also really enjoyed Blue Eyed Samurai on Netflix. Not science fiction, but it's worth your time. Guess what? Ben's dental company had a major data breach. It's time to freeze your credit FOR FREE at the following addresses to to avoid ID theft: https://www.equifax.com/personal/credit-report-services/credit-freeze/ https://service.transunion.com/dss/login.page https://www.experian.com/freeze/center.html Unless you're planning on taking out a new credit card or buying anything in the next few days, you should freeze your credit. If they are asking you for money, you're in the wrong place. It took Ben 15 minutes to do it, big thanks to password managers. Ben is now the Credit Score Fairy. This Week on the Internet: Not all TLDs are Created Equal. In light of the recent cancellation of the queer.af domain registration by the Taliban, the fragile and difficult nature of country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs) has once again been comprehensively demonstrated. When the United Kingdom decided to leave the European Union, it fell foul of the EU's rules for the registration of domains under the “eu” ccTLD. To register (and maintain) a domain name ending in .eu, you have to be a resident of the EU. When the UK ceased to be part of the EU, residents of the UK were no longer EU residents, and lost their .eu domain names. Also, after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the Ukranian Vice Prime Minister asked ICANN to suspend ccTLDs associated with Russia. While ICANN said that it wasn't going to do that (they should change their name to ICANT), because it wouldn't do anything useful, some domain registrars (the companies you pay to register domain names) ceased to deal in Russian ccTLDs, and some websites restricted links to domains with Russian ccTLDs. Generic TLDs (gTLDs) like .com, .net, .gov and other really cool new gTLDs like .rocks, .ninja, and .supplies are far better to register. https://www.hezmatt.org/~mpalmer/blog/2024/02/13/not-all-tlds-are-created-equal.html This Week in Space: Tiny moon of Saturn holds young ocean beneath icy shell. Saturn's moon Mimas harbors a global ocean beneath its icy shell, discovered through analysis of its orbit by Cassini spacecraft data. This ocean formed just 5-15 million years ago, making Mimas a prime candidate for studying early ocean formation and potential for life. This discovery suggests life-essential conditions might exist on seemingly inactive moons, expanding our search for life beyond Earth. Guess where else we've discovered oceans? Devon says "Earth." Ben knows he got that info from SeaQuest DSV. Saturns rings may have always been there for us, but what have they done for us lately? https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2024/02/240207120512.htm Patreon-only mid-pod: Ben has changed his note taking game, using Obsidian. Steven has rewatched Deadpool and Deadpool 2. Will X-Men 97 be terrible or radical? Science Fiction Book Club: This week we're doing a spoiler-filled review of the novella Emergency Skin by N.K. Jemisin. An explorer returns to gather information from a climate-ravaged Earth that his ancestors, and others among the planet's finest, fled centuries ago. The mission comes with a warning: a graveyard world awaits him. But so do those left behind—hopeless and unbeautiful wastes of humanity who should have died out eons ago. After all this time, there's no telling how they've devolved. Steel yourself, soldier. Get in. Get out. And try not to stare. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/49669410-emergency-skin TLDR: Ben and Steven loved it, but Devon was a little lukewarm and wished it was longer and more nuanced. Next week in the Science Fiction Book Club we'll discuss Randomize by Andy Weir. Get it for free if you have Amazon Prime and be informed for next week's discussion: https://www.amazon.com/Randomize-Forward-collection-Andy-Weir-ebook/dp/B07VDJBKNJ

Steve Varner, Star Trek Toy Sculptor From The 90s To Now This week, we're talking toys as we are joined by sculptor Steve Varner. This artist worked on toylines like Barbie, C.O.P.S., Army Ants, Inhumanoids, LJN WWF, Big Jim, and he sculpted the very first TMNT figure by playmates, alongside former Trek Untold guest Scott Hensey. Steve discusses how he got into sculpting toys and some lines he worked in like, sculpting the aliens from the Star Trek TMP Mego figures, the mystery of the Will Riker figure's stance, how playmates figures are made, how Seaquest DSV figures influenced trek, what feature he wished the Trek figures had, meeting Star Trek actors, and a look at some unreleased star trek figures! More recently, Steve was announced as part of the team sculpting the new Star Trek figures for Playmates, which are coming out later this year. Unfortunately, this interview was done before that was announced, so we could not discuss it, but I hope to have a follow-up soon to see what we can learn about those toys! Star Trek gets political and gives us a SPACE version of The Troubles on this week's episode. Everyone's happy that Beverly gets a lot to do this time, but that's not enough to keep us from going off on some tangents. (Nothing is able to keep us from going off on tangents!) We reminisce about that weird phase in the 90s when we all listened to swing music and dressed like hepcats, the Real Housewives are mentioned (but no one gets the reference) and Matt and Shawn have fond memories of both SeaQuest DSV and Steven Spielberg's DIVE (the restaurant that dared to ask: who doesn't want to eat inside a submarine?)Meanwhile in Corrections Corner we've got 70s T&A movies, the origins of finger cuffs, and a comparison of management styles between Jean-Luc Picard and Attila the Hun. Yeah, you heard me. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
20 years ago, on May 23, 2001, Star Trek: Voyager's journey came to an end with "Endgame, Parts 1 and 2." This week, we review one of the most disappointing series finales ever. And also talk SeaQuest DSV for some reason.
Today on the podcast I have renowned StoryBoard artist – Mark Simon. A hugely accomplished artist – Mark has worked on: Stranger Things, The Walking Dead, Black Lightning, Creepshow, Dynasty, Cult of Chucky, Little Rascals, Woody Woodpecker, The Waterboy, Spielberg's seaQuest DSV and more. An author as well – Mark's penned his autobiography ATTACKED – which shares his deeply inspiring story of being bullied and how he got the legal system to hold parents accountable for their childrens' actions. I'm inspired by Mark – the artist and the storyteller – listen up, and you will be too.
