Generally, I like to talk about labor sometime around May Day. This year, we're talking about a place that has employed a lot of Black people over the last 150 years or so but has not always shown us a lot of love: the post office. For decades, Black people were not even legally allowed to work at the post office, then Black people had to fight in the workplace and inside unions for equality. This episode, we're going to look at the struggle all the way up to the largest illegal (also called wildcat) strike in American history in 1970. I'll talk through that history with Professor Philip Rubio, author of There's Always Work at the Post Office: African American Postal Workers and the Fight for Jobs Justice and Equity. This episode, we're talking about one of my favorite TV shows of all time: Sanford & Son! We'll also get into Good Times and a little into The Jeffersons. All 3 of these shows are 1970s Black sitcoms under Tandem Productions. These shows were a window into the reality of Black life like nothing before them. Yet, what often gets overlooked in discussing these shows is the work that Black actors and writers did behind the scenes to demand respect for themselves and authentic depictions of Black people on screen. Enter my guest Dr. Adrian Sebro, author of Scratchin' and Survivin' Hustle Economics and the Black Sitcoms of Tandem Productions, to tell us some of these behind the scenes stories.Music CreditPeaceLoveSoul by Jeris (c) copyright 2012 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/VJ_Memes/35859 Ft: KungFu (KungFuFrijters)

We had the pleasure of interviewing Jeris Johnson over Zoom video! He was not born in a manger, but he is already changing the game. Jeris Johnson is first and foremost a true musician. He has been playing music wsince the age of two and was the drummer and singer in a metal band throughout high school. He has had a love of rock and metal as long as he can remember, but he also developed a love of hip-hop, trap, hyper-pop, and any musical genre that he found progressive and interesting. Jeris was so dedicated to bringing the world the future of rock music that he sold his guitar in order to be able to work with producer and collaborator SACCO. Together they have already created an urgent and amazing body of work. They have a Gold record for Jeris' song "damn!." which was a viral and streaming sensation. Jeris got Chad Kroeger of Nickelback to perform with him on a remix of "damn!," which also went crazy on the Internet. After Jeris posted a snippet of his reimagined version of "Last Resort" by Papa Roach, the band's singer Jacoby Shaddix heard it and contacted Jeris to do a whole new "Last Resort (Reloaded)" together and make it the official version to mark the 20th anniversary of Papa Roach's debut album. This song will soon be Gold as well, with over 52 million Spotify streams, plus over 11 million views of the video. This led to the release of Jeris' first EP My Sword, which included the songs mentioned above as well as fan favorites such as the title track and "Roses Red." Soon thereafter, Oli Sykes, frontman of Bring Me The Horizon, reached out to Jeris to do a new version of their most popular song "Can You Feel My Heart" and to open for them at a special intimate release show at The Whiskey in Los Angeles. Then, Jeris did a killer collab with massive rapper Trippie Redd on an original song called "Friday." In 2022, Jeris released his debut album I WANT BLOOD/i want love, which included "Friday" and 10 other bangers including "Going Ghost," "BURNING RUBBER," and his first acoustic ballad "life is underrated." Collaborations with Point North and Zillakami (on a Reloaded of the Slayer classic "Reign in Blood") plus another EP followed. Jeris had done a Reloaded snippet of the Three Doors Down classic "Kryptonite," which got a great viral reaction, and in October of last year ,he released a full version that has also been a viral and streaming success. Jeris then went quiet on social media and paused releasing music so that he and SACCO could focus 100% on creating his new album, the details of which are forthcoming!Jeris is already a battle-tested road warrior despite his brief time as a performing artist. He has toured with Falling In Reverse as well as Korn and Evanescence. He has slain the crowd at every meaningful rock festival and was even the only rock and metal act at the hip-hop festival Rolling Loud a couple years ago.We want to hear from you! We are once again doing something a little different on We the (Black) People. Boulder, Colorado just opened a Black history exhibit called Proclaiming Colorado's Black History and I have the lead curator - Colorado native and soul food scholar Adrian Miller - and the oral history liaison - Minister Glenda Strong Robinson, an NAACP and church historian in Boulder - on my show to talk about it. Boulder (and Colorado overall) is a small Black community with a mighty contribution to American history. We get into the story of how this exhibit came to be, how other Black communities can activate their history, and some of the stories they collected as they brought the exhibit to life.Want to learn more about the exhibit and listen to some oral history? This episode traces the changes in racism, antiracism, and racial awareness over the last 90 years that allow We the (Black) People to exist. Today, racism is illegal and talking about race is taboo, yet the internet makes racism and the fight against it much more visible. Professor Rob Eschmann, author of When the Hood Comes Off: Racism and Resistance in the Digital Age, explains the contradictions and activist possibilities the internet opens up for us.
