My guest is Mickie Kennedy! Mickie realized that small businesses desperately need a press release service they could actually afford. Beforehand, he'd been working at a PR company when a small business owner called, saying to Mickie “We won an award and I want to send out one press release. I've called all the PR firms in the Yellow Pages and they all have a minimum starting price of $20,000! Can you help me?” Mickie had to confess that the big PR company had the same minimum spend, but he saw an opportunity to help — and eReleases was born. Mickie created eReleases to give small businesses access to the media and to a national newswire – all with a personal touch. eReleases has grown since then and even works with big names now, but the spirit of Mickie's original intent has not changed. eReleases delivers personal service and exceptional value to every customer, with every press release at every price point. Mickie lives in Baltimore County with his family and two feuding cats. He enjoys British science fiction and acknowledges an unhealthy addiction to diet soda. Mickie holds an MFA in Creative Writing with an emphasis in Poetry from George Mason University. He still writes poetry most Monday nights (virtually) with a group of fellow misfits in Brunswick, Maryland. Mickie loves podcast interviews, having appeared as a podcast guest on several shows. Invested In Climate

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 27, 2022 43:55

My favorite read in the last couple years by far is a book called Speed & Scale. We know there's been a massive mobilization of capital, talent and attention to address climate change, but how do we know if it'll be enough?  Speed & Scale offers a clear, sector by sector, action plan and online tracker of what we need to do to cut emissions in half by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. It's incredibly well researched, packed with data and inspiration, and it uses the tried and tested system of Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) to create clear goals that add up to a comprehensive plan.  Some quick context for you: OKRs became a popular management system after venture capital investor John Doerr introduced them to Google in 1999. John wrote about OKRs in his book Measure What Matters. He's long been a leading climate investor and donor, and recently gave $1.1 billion dollars to found Stanford's new School of Sustainability.  Bringing the OKR framework to create a global action plan for climate was an ambitious and much needed effort that can help inform climate action.  For today's episode, I spoke with Ryan Panchadsaram and Anjali Grover. Ryan is a special advisor to John Doerr, and is the co-author of Speed & Scale. Anjali is Partner and Managing Director of Speed & Scale, overseeing the ongoing initiative to accelerate and track progress against the OKRs. We cover a lot of ground – from high level to nitty gritty, from code red OKRs where progress isn't being made to real reasons for optimism, and of course, also, what this all means for everyday people who care about climate change. Enjoy. In today's episode, we cover:[5:01] What is Speed & Scale and how it came about [7:36] The key objectives covered in Speed & Scale [11:51] Objective example: electrifying transportation [15:14] Speed & Scale's tracker tool and the current status on climate [19:55] The state of large scale investments - what else is needed [24:35] Reasons for hope [27:25] Lessons and insights from being in the investor space [31:25] How close can we get to accomplishing the 10 OKRs [35:39] How did the Inflation Reduction Act shift what needs to get done [39:44] The most important thing people can do right now Resources Mentionedhttps://speedandscale.com/ (Speed & Scale) https://speedandscale.com/tracker/ (Speed & Scale Tracker - Objectives & Key Results) https://speedandscale.com/2022-action-guide/ (Speed & Scale Action Guide) Connect with Ryan Panchadsaram and Anjali GroverConnect with Ryan onhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/ryanpanchadsaram/ ( LinkedIn) Connect with Anjali onhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/anjali-grover-3516b05/ ( LinkedIn) Connect With Jason Rissmanhttps://investedinclimate.com/ (https://InvestedInClimate.com)  Onhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jasonrissman/ ( LinkedIn) Onhttps://twitter.com/jasonrissman ( Twitter) Subscribe tohttps://pod.link/1620915138 ( Invested In Climate)

Larry has successfully led businesses for over 40 years. He began his career with a major food processing company and quickly became – at the age of 25 - the manager of an $80 million operation that moved 700 truckloads of peaches, pears, and tomatoes a day (yes, a day) to processing facilities throughout California. He was able to take that big company experience to a smaller, closely held company where he became a leader and a partner. That company serves the fresh produce industry and cools, then stores and ships lettuce, celery, and strawberries among other fresh produce items. During his time with the company, Larry and his partners have grown the business from $25 million a year in sales to $150 million a year in sales. As the company grew, facilities and equipment were built, the organization was developed and financing was needed. Larry and his wife, Lori, are also real estate investors with investments in apartments, shopping centers, and office complexes primarily in the southeast and in Texas. Larry has lived the pains and the thrills of growing and operating a successful business. He loves business and he loves helping people. He is now is able to do that by using his business experience along with world-class training and development programs. “How do I scale my business?” is a question on many entrepreneurs' minds, but there's a lot more to scaling your business than most entrepreneurs realize.   It's not just about whether your business is growing and successful. It's also about whether your business has all the pieces in place to scale without collapsing.    In this episode, James and Dean share some telltale signs your business is ready to scale. They also reveal how to avoid the many potential pitfalls of trying to scale before you're ready, and what being “ready” to scale actually means. (It's not what most people think.) Outline of This Episode 6:30 What does it actually mean to scale? 10:15 Growth and scaling are not the same thing 16:25 You've got a winner - what's next? 21:01 Find out what breaks 25:02 Get your ducks in a row FIRST 30:55 Scaling for the first time in a new business or industry 33:59 The most dangerous traffic source Growing is not the same as scaling The word growing is often used interchangeably with scaling, but they aren't the same thing. Growth is about getting traction in your business, creating predictable results from your sales, marketing, delivery, operations, and finances, and creating the infrastructure your business needs to be able to scale. Scaling is about adding more volume to what's already there. Some overlap is expected, but don't make the mistake of confusing growth with scaling. Success doesn't mean you're ready to scale Another mistake many entrepreneurs make is thinking that because their business is successful, it's ready to scale, but there's a lot more to being ready to scale than being successful. Scaling even a successful business without the right infrastructure in place is like putting up the walls of a house with no foundation under them. It's only a matter of time before everything comes crashing down. Tune into the episode to hear how to identify which areas of your business still need that infrastructure before you're ready to scale. Find the breaking points Odds are excellent that if you tried to scale right now, some parts of your business would “break” because they're not structured in a way that supports scaling. Before you try to scale, identify the breaking points, and a way to fix them. For example, if you're getting 100 orders a day now, and want to scale to 500 orders a day, could you keep up with inventory and delivery, or would something break? If you're a service-based business, do you have enough support and systems in place to serve all the people who want to work with you? These are the questions that have to be addressed BEFORE you try to scale. Beware scaling with one traffic source In light of the war between Apple and Facebook over who gets access to what data, along with other changes Facebook has made, business owners who depend on Facebook ads as their only source of traffic are experiencing rising ad costs and lower profit margins. The Google “slap” from years ago also illustrates the danger of depending on one traffic source. As you look to scale your business, make sure your plan includes additional sources of traffic. Simplicity equals scalability The simpler you structure every facet of your business, the easier it will be to scale. Look for ways you can make things simpler instead of more complicated. What that looks like for your business depends entirely on what you do and where you're at. It could be you need more software, or it could mean you need LESS software. It could mean you need another team member, or it could mean you have too many because you've overcomplicated the way your business is set up. Look for ways you can simplify. Back this week are Dr. Carl Schreck, of NC State and the North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies, and Dr. Phil Klotzbach, of Colorado State University. They will explain the study they co-authored, which says minimum sea level pressure is more easily quantified than maximum sustained wind, and it shows a stronger relationship with hurricane risk for the continental United States. Daniel Cossío, Village Capital: Transforming Big Ideas from Vision to Scale, Ep 102   Daniel Cossío decided he wanted to be involved in technology when he realized that businesses could produce a greater social impact than just an economic return. Today, he is Regional Manager for Latin America at Village Capital, a venture capital firm that supports impact-driven, seed-stage startups that focus on financial services, sustainability, and the future of work and education.    For ten years, Village Capital has supported over 1100 entrepreneurs from around the world, investing in more than 110 startups including Fintual, Vexi, and Siembro in Latin America. Daniel explains that Village Capital believes in supporting entrepreneurs that are often overlooked, helping them bring their big ideas from vision to scale.   In this episode, I sit down with Daniel to discuss how he got on the investor side of the table and became the lead in LatAm and how entrepreneurs can get involved with Village Capital. We also talk about a recent report released by Village Capital called Beyond Borders on how to successfully scale a startup in Latin America, among other industry trends in the region. Building relationships beyond networking events Daniel explains that one of the main lessons he’s learned from working at Village Capital is how to become an active listener. In venture capital, it’s not enough to hand out business cards at networking events. To build a strong relationship, it’s important to understand the personal story behind the decisions and motivations of an entrepreneur or investor.    Listen to this episode of Crossing Borders to hear more of Daniel’s lessons learned from working at Village Capital. Scaling a fintech in Latin America After observing that founders often struggle with finding the right moment to scale their startup in another country, Village Capital developed a playbook entitled Beyond Borders. According to Daniel, entrepreneurs face a lot of pressure to expand and often fail in the process because they make the decision for the wrong reasons. This report is meant to share insights on how to successfully scale a fintech startup in Latin America.   Check out this episode of Crossing Borders to learn about some of the reasons startups fail when they expand into other markets. Village Capital and COVID-19 Daniel delves into some of the verticals Village Capital is tackling amid the global pandemic. He explains that the fund is particularly interested in startups that are creating solutions that will help heal the economy post-COVID-19 and those that are most vulnerable to the crisis’ financial repercussions.   In this episode of Crossing Borders, Daniel explains how the global health and economic crisis has affected Village Capital’s investment thesis.   Daniel Cossío’s passion for creating social impact through entrepreneurship is vital to Village Capital’s vision of a future where business can create equity and long term prosperity in Latin America.    Outline of this Episode: [1:32] - About Daniel and Village Capital [3:27] - Starting his entrepreneurial journey [5:54] - Getting on the investor side of the table [8:56] - Becoming the lead in LatAm [11:01] - Beyond Borders report [14:31] - Advice for startups thinking of expanding [15:53] - Getting involved with Village Capital [17:40] - Daniel’s recommendation for books, blogs, documentaries, and podcasts [18:52] - Advice to Daniel’s younger self   Resources & People Mentioned: Daniel Cossío Village Capital Beyond Borders Amanda Jacobson Fintual Vexi Siembro OneWay Afluenta Alejandro Cosentino Cornershop High Growth Handbook Principles

All-or-nothing thinking is not helpful when it comes to how you approach eating. Talk of "falling off the wagon" is extremely common and serves to keep you stuck in a loop of white-knuckle "compliance" (yuck) followed by periods of fuck-it-all eating, guilt, and shame. If you keep coming back to this way of thinking, start by asking yourself if it's actually helping you find better health and more ease. Probably not. In this episode, I'm talking about why all-or-nothing words and ways of thinking create unhelpful feelings which then lead to behaviors that cause further guilt and shame with food. I'm also sharing five practical steps you can follow for beginning to detangle yourself from the words and metaphors of dieting so you're more empowered from within and less likely to spend all of your time thinking about food. I've dabbled with this topic before in other podcast episodes about the scale and diet culture, but I haven't taken on BMI as a separate topic until now. A recent routine doctor's appointment had me reeling from an offhand BMI comment. It brought up a lot for me, and had I not been mentally stronger, it could have pushed me back into disordered eating and exercise behaviors. In this episode, I'm relaying my story and tearing into six reasons why BMI is bullshit. There's a lot of nuance here, and my experiences as a person in a smaller body are nothing like what someone else in a larger body may experience. It's my hope that you'll walk away from this episode with some things to think about and start conversations of your own with the people you care about.
