The Influence of the Velvet Undergroundwith special guest Dave Lennon (Lost in the Groove Podcast)What happens when two podcast hosts—one from sunny Florida, the other from soggy Suffolk—sit down to worship at the altar of The Velvet Underground? Absolute chaos, that's what.In this episode of Beat Motel, Andrew is joined by Dave Lennon from Lost in the Groove to unravel the weird, wonderful, and often dysfunctional legacy of Lou Reed and co. Expect deep dives into the genius of John Cale, Nico's awkward-but-iconic vocals, and why Mo Tucker deserved better.Along the way, we also offend Replacements fans, ponder what David Bowie talked about while curling one out, and discuss how Arctic Monkeys gave a pension to a punk poet. There's also a band called Prolapse. Yes, really. If you're a Velvet Underground hater, stay tuned. You might just learn something… or at least laugh at our expense.Featuring:Nico's German glamour and tragic misdiagnosisJohn Cale's Welsh wizardryLou Reed: songwriting genius or professional nightmare? How VU inspired noise rock, punk, and half of Andrew's record collectionBands that owe everything to VU (but won't admit it)Why the Jesus & Mary Chain sound like a hangover in churchShoutouts to Prolapse, Arctic Monkeys, Spacemen 3, and moreThis is the most passionate episode we've done about a band, It's chaos. "I always like starting with something out of context..." He of WH Lung greatness and now a solo live artist & DJ delivers a belter of a mix. Having grown up in Manchester's DIY band scene, Tom Sharkett came late to these things called dancing clubs and all that came with it, discovering electronic music through synthesizers while recording with his most excellent band W. H. Lung. His journey from guitar music to the dancefloor mirrors his present-day musical output; a collision of post-punk abrasiveness and the electronic that feels equally at home in sweaty basements and proper nightclubs. Now based back in Todmorden, Tom has carved out his own niche releasing on Optimo Music and System Olympia's Okay Nature label... and it's a bloody brilliant niche! His production approach remains coloured by those early days of bedroom experimentation with friends, citing the peerless Andrew Weatherall's fearlessly exploratory spirit as a key inspiration. It's interesting how he keeps coming around and around again, doesn't it? "His approach reminds me of the excited feeling I had trying to record things in my bedroom with my friends with anything we had at our disposal and just experimenting with the weird and wonderful results," When it comes to disc jockeying, Tom brings that same experimental energy. This mix was recorded in his panoramic valley-view studio in Todmorden, captures that ethos perfectly, opening with Spacemen 3 before wandering through territory that spans from Tirzah-esque experimentalism to classic New Beat. Between touring with Julie Byrne, collaborating with Raf Rundell - more on that to come soon pop pickers - and working on a new solo record featuring multiple vocalists, Tom's not a 'sit still' kind of guy. Just how we like it. Get it on, let's go... read more below. https://www.theransomnote.com/music/mixes/tom-sharkett-the-altered-currents-mix/ @tomsharkett @whlung

In Old Saybrook, CT on December 16, 1957, between the hours of 2 and 3 A.M., a local teacher witnessed something incredible: outside her window, Mary M. Starr saw a spaceship with aliens inside. Her encounter was not the first. Leaving behind a trail of mysteries and murders, the Case of the Saybrook Blockheads is one of fear, greed, and secrecy.CREDITSAtomic Snapshots of Shared Memory.mp3 by Geoff Keston is licensed under a Attribution 4.0 International License.Zinc by CXR ATK is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License.Manoeuvre by CXR ATK is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License. Send us a Text Message.Spacemen, sometimes (read often) on the show, we like to go ahead and speak for all women. Today's episode is no exception. Today, Mike and Rob reveal what attracts women. Is it the big car? Or maybe money? Muscles? I don't want to spoil the surprise, but maybe? Turns out confidence is a key ingredient to attraction. We don't actually speak for women, but more humans in general. Confidence is attractive. So we'll tell you how to develop it. Have we ever steered you wrong? Spread the word! The Manspace is Rad!!

Hello Patrons! Here is the first of three volumes of supplementary material from the 65-67 series! There were a number of trends from this year that stood out, that we didn't really get a chance to cover on the main show. There were multiple events where a car would be lifted up into the air and communication would occur. South America was the location of a number of contactee like cases, but also cases in which "little people" would present witnesses with pieces of metal. This was also the year of the Valensole Affair, one of France's most important UFO cases of all time, and even Antarctica saw UFO activity around this time! Send us a Text Message.Spacemen! Heed my warning! Not really. Today, we debunk some common ideas about divorce. Matt's gone, but Mike and Rob get into it about problems one researcher stated are signs of impending divorce. Don't worry, they're not really. But don't just take our word for it, listen in. Keywordsinfidelity, causes of divorce, communication, intimacy, divorce, intimacy, financial disagreements, excessive drinking, drug use, jealousy, irritating habits, communication, responsibilityTakeawaysCheating and infidelity are often symptoms of deeper issues in a relationship rather than the primary cause of divorce. The percentage of marriages affected by infidelity is estimated to be between 20% and 45%, but the likelihood of divorce due to infidelity varies. It is important to address the underlying issues that lead to infidelity, such as lack of communication and intimacy.Deal breakers in a marriage, such as infidelity and violence, are often more complex and nuanced than they appear.Open and honest communication, along with a strong emotional connection, are key factors in maintaining a healthy and fulfilling relationship. Infidelity, lack of intimacy, and financial disagreements are common issues in relationships, but they can be worked through with effort and communication.Excessive drinking or drug use can be extremely damaging to a relationship and may be difficult to recover from.Jealousy and irritating habits can cause conflicts in a relationship, but it's important to consider one's own role and reactions in these situations.Divorce is a personal choice, and there are no guarantees in relationships. Send us a Text Message.Spacemen, we've let you down. I mean, not really, but sort of. We weren't there for you last week when you needed us most. But we, like many people, have limits and have to take vacations from time to time. We're back though, and everything will once again be aligned in the spaceiverse. As you will hear, Rob was absent on this episode. But it's a good one anyway. Today, we talk about how we can learn to love. Matt and Mike talk about the book 'The Art of Loving' by Eric Fromm and the four main components of love: care, responsibility, respect, and knowledge. More specifically, they talk about respect, care, self-growth, and vulnerability. I mean, did you really think we'd have an episode in which we didn't talk about vulnerability? So, get ready to learn...to love...and to laugh. Put that on your wall. You're welcome. Keywordslove, relationships, care, responsibility, respect, knowledge, effort, understanding, self-growth, vulnerability, relationships, tolerance, sacrifice, well-being, love, acceptance, personal growthTakeawaysLove requires active concern for the well-being and growth of the person we love.Responsibility in love means being willing to respond and take action in service of the other person's well-being.Respect involves fully seeing and understanding the other person, allowing them space to develop on their own terms.Knowledge in love means deeply understanding the other person's inner workings and being able to interpret their actions and emotions.Love is both an art and a science, requiring effort and understanding. The component of love that is often missing or misunderstood is subjective and can vary depending on the individual and the relationship. Respect and tolerance for vulnerability are crucial in relationships.Men often sacrifice their own well-being for the sake of others.Self-care and personal growth are important for maintaining a healthy relationship.Love involves accepting and seeing each other for who they truly are.TitlesThe Art of Loving: Exploring the Components of LoveMissing and Misunderstood: Reflecting on the Components of Love Accepting and Seeing Each Other for Who We Truly AreThe Challenges of Sacrificing One's Well-Being for OthersSound Bites"Care, responsibility, respect, and knowledge""To really love somebody it takes these different things""Love as both an art and a science""There's just not enough toleration of the vulnerability that goes along with allowing yourself to be fully seen so that your partner can respect you.""My job is to be kind of at your service, right. SPACEMEN!!!! Did you know you're screwing your kids up? You're not. But what if you are? Well today, we'll address that topic. We talk about clip from Dr. Becky Kennedy, a clinical psychologist known as the millennial parenting whisperer. We'll talk about how focusing on making kids happy can actually make them fearful and less tolerant of other emotions. When parents try to rescue their kids from distress, they send the message that certain emotions are bad and should be avoided. This can lead to anxiety in adulthood. It is important to develop resilience in kids and allow them to experience a range of emotions. Society's emphasis on happiness and the avoidance of pain can be detrimental to emotional development. We even give you an activity to do at home to help develop your tolerance for emotional discomfort.KeywordsDr. Becky Kennedy, parenting, happiness, emotions, resilience, anxiety, distress, avoidance, societal pressure, pain, discomfort, emotions, emotional regulation, tolerance, resilience, validation, comparison, mindfulness, ice cube exerciseTakeawaysAvoiding distressful emotions can lead to anxiety in adulthood. It is important to allow kids to experience a range of emotions and not rescue them from distress.Society's emphasis on happiness and the avoidance of pain can hinder emotional development. Allowing children to experience and tolerate pain and discomfort is important for their emotional development and resilience.Validating children's emotions and avoiding comparisons or false reassurances is more helpful in supporting their emotional well-being.Emotional regulation involves regulating the influence of emotions on behavior and being intentional about how much influence emotions have in different situations. The ice cube exercise can be a helpful mindfulness practice to build resilience and learn to tolerate discomfort.Acknowledging and labeling emotions is important, but it is not always necessary to fully experience them.Sound Bites"Listening to music from your high school years can boost your mood""Homestar Runner, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and Clone High are nostalgic favorites""Internet issues and frozen screens can be frustrating""If you have any poo, fling it now.""Anxiety actually isn't a feeling, it's the experience of wanting to run away from a feeling.""Our job is not to make our kid happy.""I think we have this idea that now you must go feel it. A case of curious collaboration from ex-Spacemen 3 architect Sonic Boom and Animal Collective alpha Panda Bear. Built on a foundation of old chamber pop samples, Reset delivers inspiration with speed bag precision without ever being aware of it.
Panda Bear (Noah Lennox) from Animal Collective and Sonic Boom (Pete Kember) from Spacemen 3 released a splendid psych-pop album called Reset last year. British dub producer Adrian Sherwood loved it so much, he rebuilt it from the ground up in dub form, with extra musicians. We'll hear two key tracks from Reset In Dub today, alongside some bracing New Brighton noise-pop from Blair Parkes and a slice of Brazilian funk from Rio's Almir Ricardi.

Spacemen, settle in. On today's episode, we talk about some healthy ways to manage intense emotions and stress. Matt hits the weights and we talk about if that's a good idea or just toxic masculinity. I mean really, at this point, isn't everything a man does considered toxic? Honestly. I don't know how we get through a day. But we also talk about Mike moving. Which is a real bummer for Matt and Rob. But Spacemen may not even notice since he'll still be on the show. And we also talk quite extensively about the recent Texas Monthly BBQ Fest. Rob went. And don't worry, I've included some links for you BBQ pleasure. Git yer smoke on. Happy September, everyone! Fall is fast approaching here in the Northern Hemisphere (happy Spring to all of you down under!) and with it the spooky season approaches! But this month we have two truly bizarre cases of high strangeness. Seb talks about Whose Line is it Anyway? No, not the improv comedy show...literal lines hanging from something somewhere up above a town in New Jersey! Then Taylor goes back to the newsletter that gave us Sam the Sandown Clown to look into a UFO encounter in Georgia in 1977 that might have actually been the Fae. And those Fae may have captured Jimmy Hoffa.
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two guys who were part of monumentally influential bands in the 2000s, and who continue to make groundbreaking music today: Paul Maroon and Noah Lennox. Maroon is behind the incredible, instantly recognizable guitar sound of The Walkmen, a band that sort of split up a decade ago but reunited just this year for what has turned into an incredibly jubilant tour. The band is currently in Europe, where they just played a show in Lennox's adopted home country of Portugal, and they'll return for a string of U.S. dates this fall, culminating in a hometown—that'd be New York—show in October. Since the Walkmen split, Maroon has mostly turned his attention to composing classical music and the occasional film score. He put out a really engaging record with the pianist Jenny Lin called 13 Short Piano Pieces, with each of those pieces inspired by and named for a different place Maroon has lived—he currently calls Seville, Spain home. Check out “El Raval” right here, and go to Paulmaroon.co for info on his solo stuff, or thewalkmen.com for tour dates. Maroon released a seven-inch recently that featured singing from his friend Noah Lennox, who's perhaps better known by the name he uses as part of Animal Collective, Panda Bear. Lennox has been part of that massively influential experimental rock band for nearly 25 years, and he's released a ton of great music both with Animal Collective and as a solo artist. His latest release, though, is a collaboration with Pete Kember, also known as Sonic Boom. Kember was a member of Spacemen 3 way back when, and he's also released incredible music as Spectrum and E.A.R. He's also earned his production stripes over the years, producing records for Beach House, MGMT, and… Panda Bear. Last year, Kember and Lennox released a collaborative album they recorded during the pandemic called Reset, and they just followed it with a dub version of the album remixed by Adrian Sherwood called Reset in Dub. Check out “Gettin' to the Point” from Reset. In this conversation, we learn that Lennox was in attendance for the first-ever Walkmen show; we hear about their adventures living in Portugal and Spain, the difference between a good show and a bad show, and whether these two are “daily guys.” Lennox also makes an accurate prediction about the NBA Finals, even though, as you'll hear, this is not a basketball podcast. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Noah Lennox and Paul Maroon for chatting. Seriously? I'm right all the time anyway. She should just admit, you are always right. I can see you thought this through and whatever conclusion you've come to deserves my admiration and respect. Spacemen, just read that paragraph above to your wife. Problem sol...what? It didn't work? Huh. That's weird. I thought this through. Why won't you just agree with me? On today's episode, Matt, Mike, and Rob discuss why we sometimes have a hard time when people disagree with us. Often we might feel threatened or like none of our thoughts or opinions matter if this one doesn't. Luckily, Matt and Mike lay down some truth that will fix ALL your problems. Even that one you've been having with your water softener. Everything will come true, except forget that last part. And enjoy the episode. And GO WATCH US ON YOUTUBE!!!! Matt's so attractive. I found the lost sci-fi podcast shortly after having a conversation about Philip K Dick with the attendant at the Holter Museum of Art in Helena Montana and looked for more about him. Being a big fan of classic and vintage literature I was pleasantly surprised to find your podcast. I was thrilled to see Philip K Dick as the pilot episode. I've been enjoying the narrator bring to life the story like an old time radio drama. From “The Plagiarist of Rigel IV” to “The Mind Digger” I hang on to every word to the end. Sup bruhs? Who's ready for another episode? Well buckle up. Today, Mike and Rob try to fill the void of Matt and talk about being a father after divorce. Rob gives a LOT of disclaimers. Here's one more: divorce is really freaking hard. In no way are we speaking FOR all men, nor TO all men. We hope this episode will help any man, divorced or not, consider the kind of father they are and the kind of father they want to become. We know that Spacemen are actively engaged in improving themselves. But, Rob does get a little passionate about this topic at points. Fair warning. Are you stressed and compressed? Carrying stress in your shoulders, neck or back? Have non-chronic pain in those areas? Or maybe something worse like an injury? You'll want to hear this!It just may be this single factor in your environment no one realizes is working against them, compressing you downward with pressure you can't lift.THAT is what Coach Frank reveals in today's episode! You absolutely need to know this one factor. But, if you can't fight back against it, why even bother? Because knowing it, you open the door to space-age technology, literally based on a concept that keeps astronauts and spacemen even coming home slightly taller after their trip to the stars, and certainly feeling better physically than before they left. Can we bring that down to Earth for everyone though? Why should astronauts get all the benefits? Don't you deserve some too? Well, listen to this episode and find out the exact way you can take control of the situation. Learn the one factor that's working against you and how to work around it! Tune in now!
On the show this time, it's the hypnotic rhythms and interlaced guitars of veteran New York rockers Luna. Luna is one of those bands that just sound right when you drop the needle on the record. They've been doing it for a long time. The band was started by Dean Wareham in 1991, after he quit the influential alt rock band Galaxie 500. There were a few lineup changes, and some life changes before it settled into the current lineup in 2000 - Dean, bassist Britta Philips, drummer Lee Wall and guitarist Sean Eden. The music would fit in a set with the Velvet Underground, Mercury Rev, and Spacemen 3. Their latest, 'A Sentimental Education,' is available on Double Feature Records and Bandcamp. Today is another new music Monday with my guest Matt Burr of The Black Delta Movement. This band has dropped a masterpiece of a record called Recovery Effects that I can't recommend enough. It was so good to have Matt on the show to talk about this record and also how the band started. The Black Delta Movement also have another record out called Preservation which I also highly recommend. Do a deep dive into their music and help spread the word. Keep The Candles Lit and thanks for supporting the show for all of these years. Thank you DDR Kingston-upon-Hull's The Black Delta Movement return with their stunning new album ‘Recovery Effects' – 8 tracks of immersive, groove-heavy psychedelic rock released April 14th 2023 on Fuzz Club Records. Determination and a commitment to musical development are writ large across Matt Burr's personal and artistic journey as the main creative force behind The Black Delta Movement. His most collaborative work yet, ‘Recovery Effects' sees Matt recruiting highly lauded UK guitar-slinger and Little Barrie frontman Barrie Cadogan and bandmates Lewis Wharton (Bass) and Tony Coote (Drums) to provide musical backing on the album. With legendary producer, The Heliocentrics' co-founder and drummer extraordinaire Malcolm Catto also helming production duties. “The album's a love letter to the band and all the emotions that come with it,” explains Matt when talking about the period of adversity that led to its creation. Finding himself without his former bandmates following the release of their highly-praised 2018 debut ‘Preservation' and that record's subsequent live shows, the pandemic-induced lockdown periods throughout '20 and '21 initially gave time for reflection before proving to be a time of productivity. Giving Matt the breathing space to fine-tune the new songs alongside Cadogan before hitting the ground running when entering the studio in late 2021 – the band cutting the basic tracks live and Malcolm Catto providing invaluable input when it came to moulding the music you hear contained throughout The results of this creative melting pot of such talented and seasoned musicians see The Black Delta Movement delivering that ring thing: a layered, honest and deeply entertaining rock'n'roll record. There are a myriad of moods and textures, whether on the garage-blues grooves of opener and first single ‘Fourth Pass Over The Graveyard', follow-up single ‘Zip-Tie' which explodes from its moody intro into punk-rock motorik, or the psychedelic slow-burn of ‘Hiding In The Tall Grass' which manages to channel the likes of The Doors and Spacemen 3 over its 9 hypnotic minutes.
