You didn't think we could go more than a few episodes without fretting over Borussia Dortmund, did you? Well after first going down at the Westfalen to a Leverkusen side that's been rounding into form, BVB followed it up with a loss in Kiel in which they trailed 3-0 before halftime...so we pretty much have to. Matt checks Terry's temperature on his schwarzgelben, and hears from Nik about a police costs ruling in German court that could have some serious repercussions for the country's football scene.

We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, Canadian Championship, and Canadian Premier League chat. The football keeps coming and so do the podcasts! It's not been a great week, with two horrible on-pitch performances and a PR nightmare off it with the no-show of Messi and friends for the match against Miami. We delve into how the whole Messi debacle played out and look at all parties that are being blamed for the non-appearance. How justified is it, where should most of the blame lie, and how have the Whitecaps handled the whole situation? We also look at the actual game itself, where the 'Caps failed to rise to the occasion once again in front of a large crowd and are still struggling to create and score from open play. Plus after scraping through to the Canadian Championship semi-finals against Cavalry, we look at what lies in-store and how Vanni Sartini's postgame comments from both of last week's matches went from one extreme to the other. How much threat is his job under right now? This episode of the podcast is brought to you by Recovery Family Law, family law lawyers in Surrey, working with clients to get excellent results. Welcome to Episode 44 of Glory Days of Gold. Recorded across two continents, Glory Days of Gold brings you a regular dose of East Fife FC and Scottish football chat, with a splattering of interesting interviews, fun segments, and music thrown in along the way. Silly us. We thought with East Fife's season wrapping up, with no meaningful games left to play, that it would be a pretty quiet week down Bayview way. What on earth would we talk about on the show? How wrong we were. It's been a week of farce and shame in lower league Scottish football and it all started at Broadwood on Tuesday evening when East Fife refused to play their game against Clyde after a positive test in the Bully Wee camp was revealed minutes before kick off. We delve into the farcical scenes at the match, the subsequent fall out, and the ridiculous fine handed out to East Fife, in a situation that did that rare thing of basically uniting Scottish football fans. Sadly East Fife's season just doesn't seem to want to end. We take a brief look at the game that did go ahead this week against Peterhead, try to muster up some enthusiasm for the season run-in, and look ahead to the exciting battle between Brora Rangers, Kelty Hearts, and Brechin City for a place in League 2. But we get into more serious issues to end the show as we look at abuse in football, both on and off the pitch, with the unsavoury incident around David Cox as the catalyst. We talk mental health, the abuse Cox says made him retire from the game, and question whether this is going to start a conversation about mental health issues or make players less likely to come out and talk about it. And as the game is uniting about social media abuse this weekend, is that just posturing or can we really see real change in that regard and how would it come about? All of that plus our regular music and fun sections. Here's the rundown for the main segments from the episode: 01.42: East Fife's Clyde Covid Controversy and farcical fines 39.57: Fife Bands In Focus - The Ghost Train - Hope and Glory 44.25: Trying, and failing, to care about the season run-in 59.48: Anyone Fancy A Chocolate Digestive? - Euan Donaldson 62.40: Brora, Kelty, and Brechin - the battle for a league place begins 73.27: David Cox, mental health, and abuse in football and online 99.30: Wavelength - I, Ludicrous - Bring On The Substitute

Phragmites. You say "frag-MITE-eez," not "FRAG-mites." But the most important thing to know about phragmites is that it's an invasive, non-native species, not to be confused with native phragmites. The invasives came to America originally from central and eastern Europe, and they've been marching steadily - if slowly - across the continent from New England. Now the Community Action Duluth Stream Corps, headed by Brandon Van Tassel, is tasked with getting rid of the plants, which are a perfect topic of conversation this close to Halloween. After all, what other plant can reach heights of 15', grows in a thick, dense stand that, on the outside, becomes a thicket of mosquitoes but on the inside, is an "ecological dead zone"? The State of Minnesota has a lot of laws and regulations regarding who is allowed to scamper about the countryside applying herbicides to things, so it's better to leave the actual eradication efforts to the experts. But those experts are anxious for help from citizen
We haven’t quite “sent it packing” yet, however once COVID-19 has finally been “wrestled to the ground” – mid next year, perhaps; or, maybe never – clearly we will “bounce back stronger than ever before”, according to the strictly non-hyperbolic musings of Prime Minister Demonic Goings Boris Johnson. Aftermath of World War I? World War II? Bibble babble, donnez-moi un break, mate, as the wily wordsmith would have it. In his seminal 1995 paper on “Metaphor, Morality, and Politics, Or, Why Conservatives Have Left Liberals In the Dust”, cognitive linguist and philosopher George Lakoff explained that “While conservatives understand that all of their policies have a single unified origin, liberals understand their own political conceptual universe so badly that they still think of it in terms coalitions of interest.” He concluded that “Liberals need to go beyond coalitions of interest groups to consciously construct a unified language and imagery to convey their worldview. This will not be easy, and they are thirty years behind.” Make that about 55 years by now. Continue reading -> https://www.smalldataforum.com/

Today's Guest: Saul Austerlitz, author, Another Fine Mess: A History of American Film Comedy Order Another Fine Mess: A History of American Film Comedy by Saul Austerlitz, available in print or ebook from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above! Image via WikipediaIf it’s a choice between watching drama or comedy, I always pick comedy. Why choose to get all weepy and sad when the other option is to fall off your chair laughing? I think the die was cast for me back in 1978, when Steve Goldin and I saw Animal House the night it opened at a theater in Princeton, NJ. I had seen comedies before, of course, but none that had ever worn me out. We laughed so hard at the antics of the Delta House gang that we went back again the next night. And quite a few more times after that. SAUL AUSTERLITZ podcast excerpt: "I wanted to broaden the definition of comedy to some extent. In terms of Renee Zellweger, I thought it was valuable to include some of the performers who had been quite funny in films more oriented to women. Because I think some of today's movies are aggressively marketed for men. People like Renee Zellweger and Julia Roberts are comedic performers, though obviously in a different way than Will Ferrell, but they do have something to contribute." Saul Austerlitz would probably make the same choice, I’m guessing. He’s the author of a new movie history, Another Fine Mess: A History of American Film Comedy. It takes the genre from Charlie Chaplin—whose work I myself studied at the University of Florida many years ago — to Judd Apatow, whose work I now study from the comfortable of my family room, without the annoyance and interruption of pop quizzes and term papers. Austerlitz established his pop culture research credentials with a previous book, Money for Nothing: A History of the Music Video from the Beatles to the White Stripes. Toss the kids in the back and chart a winding course to a kitschy destination — we're at the wheel of three American road trip comedies this week. Pit stops include a deep psychological analysis of Clark Griswold, a theory on how you market indie pop and questions about whether Netflix is making the new cable movie. Chance begins the episode in conversation with writer Saul Austerlitz. They discuss his book, "Another Fine Mess" (a history of American comedy film), as well as the 1941 road trip classic "Sullivan's Travels." At 15 minutes, Noah and Chance transition to "National Lampoon's Vacation." At 26:30, they give "Little Miss Sunshine" a push. And at 37:45, why does nothing bad happen in the Netflix original "The Fundamentals of Caring"?
