In today's episode, Christos and I sat down and realized that we went to the same school: The European School. We talked about issues like identity, why it is so difficult for Luxembourg to keep its EU students in the country, and what it means to be a European citizen. Then, we seguewayed into why it is that people don't stay or come back to Luxembourg. We touched on cost of living and the lack of political representation of immigrants in the Luxembourgish government. In a nutshell: the "Eurobubble" of Luxembourg, a phenomenon where immigrants do not partake in decision-making in Luxembourg, and consequently don't participate in society. In this episode we'll be talking about the categories that can be found within the gay community. Why are we discussing this and why is this interesting for everyone? If you're a woman and you think the patriarchy only affects you, think again. Within the gay community, you'd assume there wouldn't be issues of gender-like discrimination because… they all have penises. So, like, problem solved- right? Instead we find the unwieldy construction of a quasi-female category. Why, you ask. Good question. To create a power dynamic. There is a fixation on hyper-masculinity on dating apps but also within the real world and apparently having a penis isn't enough to run away from patriarchal issues. Why, you ask again. Well, damn. What a question. We'll attempt to answer it as best as we can but to give you a taster: Think internalised homophobia, a fixation on masculinity, the innate human need to have more values than others, and so on. But bottom line, the labels are a big issue. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/runasruminations/support
It's no secret that many gay men work out frequently and watch their weight carefully. Why is that? Where does that pressure derive from? Does it stem from an over-sexualisation of the body? In other words, is it because the body is seen as something to be consumed, rather than being the vessel of a human being with a heart? In this episode, Jeevan (@lgbt.abdnaware) and I discuss where the obsession with the gym and that perfect, ripped body comes from. You'll hear him arguing really fascinating points, such as the “lean physique” being a means to escape from discrimination - because who's going to disrespect you if you're big and bulky, right? We'll briefly be touching on the ideas of the feminine and masculine archetype. However, the episode after this one will dive into that subject matter deeper (categorisation of gay men, how the patriarchy plays into gay culture). --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/runasruminations/support
The LGBTQ+ community claims to celebrate diversity, individuality, and sexuality. Why is it that racism isn't addressed? Particularly on dating apps, racism is frequently justified as “it's just my preference”. No. Whether you prefer your cocktail on the sweet or sour, stronger or weaker side is a preference. Making preemptive decisions on a person based on their ethnicity is not a preference- it's racism. What flabbergasts me is how in a community that claims to be tolerant of all, and where most people have experienced oppression or discriminated first hand, racism is deemed socially acceptable. Perhaps it is important here to state the obvious: Having been a victim of bigotry does not make you immune against being a bigot yourself. In this episode, my friend Jeevan (@lgbt.abdnaware) and I will be discussing racism within the gay community: where it stems from and what we think of it. This chat got yoga-heavy but give it a listen whether you're into yoga or not! I promise you won't regret it. The underlying reason for stress in our lives lies in us trying to control everything. So, where does this need to control things come from? In some ways this will require inner child work. You'll have to sort through stuff that happened in your childhood. Maybe you were neglected in some way in your early childhood - it can be something as small as your parents being late one day and you thinking you had been forgotten by them. We also control out of worry. And how is worry created? By thinking about the future or the past. Worry doesn't live in the present. Worry is placed on something in the future or past (usually it's forward thinking). We create worst-case scenarios, unnecessary worries flood in, and so on. So, how do we stop that? Take a breath. Ground yourself. Move it from the head into the body. Drop shoulders. Loosen your jaw. Then ask yourself some rational questions. @rosalie.hochstetter shared that she likes to go for a run, or takes a warm shower, cuddles her adorable dog, and so on. I like to do vinyasa yoga, and give my body what it needs. Usually, a walk in nature will do the trick. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/runasruminations/support
This one's all about receiving and letting go of taking responsibility for everything. Learning to receive is something a lot of people, and especially women, struggle with. What we're often unaware of is: when you don't accept another person's help, compliments, or other acts of kindness - you're taking away their joy. So, tap into your feminine energy and learn to receive through this episode. We'll also be talking about authenticity. I have often regulated how I act around certain people, not wanting to be insensitive to someone's insecurities. Ultimately, this ain't your job. Your only job is to be kind and show up as yourself authentically. Do not take responsibility for other people's insecurities. Don't play small to not overshadow another person. When you show up authentically, you provide the space for others to also be authentically themselves. And THAT is a beautiful thing. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/runasruminations/support
We can all relate to feeling stressed or anxious about situations in life. So, how do we get rid of this drain on our energy resources. How do we stop stressing and worrying? Rosalie runs her own business so I thought she'd be the perfect person to ask. There's no one who takes care of what she does, it's a one-woman show and with that come responsibilities. This can be freeing in a lot of ways, but daunting in others. Taxes and legal stuff, anyone? Even if you aren't running a business, you probably have experienced the overthinking when you haven't gotten back to someone and worried that they're now mad at you. Or, hey, we just had exams, and many of you were probably stressing out about those. The only constant in life is change, as they say. And that can feel like too much to handle at times. I just recorded a new podcast episode with my friend Maddie. She studied Psychology at the University of Aberdeen and has now moved onto her MA, which she will be graduating from in September. In this episode, we touched on the stigmata surrounding therapy and will be sharing some useful resources and ways to get help if you are struggling mentally. This one's especially catered to students who might not have the resources to afford a therapist. You'll learn here, wehere you can ask for help, how to find the right therapist, and how to get help when you don't have any money to spare. Episode 50 of Runa's Ruminations. A special one, and here's the audio version for those who prefer that to the igtv. My life coach and friend Rosalie and I sat down as part of my Mental Health Awareness week content. You'll get to know Rosalie in this first of four episodes, and learn what you can expect from your life coach (and what not). We primarily discussed how being misaligned with your purpose, or dharma, can lead to friction within you. I feel a lot of people struggle mentally because they aren't happy with their life, due to not really knowing where their strengths lie and what makes them happy. I asked Rosalie how she figure out what she really wanted from life, and also shared a time when I noticed things weren't working out whatsoever. This episode is part of my content for mental health awareness week. I find it really important to discuss mental health related topics more, in order to normalise them. Most of us will have struggled mentally at some point or another, and all I want is for people to feel less abnormal & less alone. For this episode, I invited Ruth. She'll be answering faith-based questions in relation to mental health. Such as: If and how religious beliefs can help when coping with stressful life circumstances, and If religious faith can give humans a sense of comfort, meaning, a sense of control, or hope. I loved interviewing Nia on the concept of polyamory. It pushed me as the interviewer, since it was completely out of my comfort zone. It's moments like these that teach me how to expand my horizon, and hopefully it will do the same for some of you. For the first time, I really struggled to word questions properly. In the end, I realised: to create a good atmosphere and make it a powerful episode, I have to allow myself to be authentic. I was so worried to sound unaccepting or overly traditional- when in reality, I just didn't understand a lot of things. So I owned up to it. I said: I don't understand this, please explain. In this episode, we're contrasting the startup work environment with the traditional work place. Our generation is fortunate in the respect that it's becoming more common to start your own business and be your own boss. But then again, how does that work? This episode is a really raw and honest one. It's a bit of a daunting topic to discuss but I think it's important because 75-95% of women (studies vary) report disordered eating behaviors or symptoms consistent with eating disorders. Us women, we're pretty cruel to our bodies sometimes. We compare and control. Some of us do it our whole life. It doesn't help that there is a trend of being overly aware and healthy (Orthorexia), one that at times glamourises disordered eating. There were times when my eating habits were definitely unhealthy. In this episode, Lauren shares how weight lifting changed her mindset, and I later talk about how yoga has helped me. We both have learned to see food as fuel, and not the enemy. I hope this resonates with some of you. I sat down with Lauren last week and she talked about what it's like to do weightlifting as a woman. I was curious because I only know guys who are into it. She talks about her positive experience in the weightlifting society of the University of Glasgow but also what it's like to weightlift as a woman in general. We then meandered into the topic of hitting the gym as a woman, feeling like everyone's staring at you, and lacking the confidence to go into the male-dominated weightlifting section (or not, in Lauren's case). 'Gyming' as a woman truly is different to a man's experience. It can be difficult to muster up the courage to walk around in your yoga pants with the knowledge that you're being mentally undressed- no thank you. Anyway, we talked about both of our experiences exercising as a female, be it in the context of weightlifting or just hitting the gym in general. A few years ago, I went on the pill. Why? Because I had exhausted alternatives (or so I thought) and it seemed practical. I was educated on the possible side effects but I genuinely thought "what are the chances of being so unlucky?". It turned out to be one of my biggest regrets. Even though I only took it for a few months, it seriously messed with my health. So much so that it took until the past summer to start fixing one of the main issues caused by this drug: my thyroid. Through this episode, I hope I can encourage you to be thorough in your research regarding the things you put into your body. At the end of the day, "health is wealth", and you shouldn't take that lightly. I also mention in the episode, and I'll include it here again, that this doesn't happen to everyone. Someone sent in a question a while back asking: “Is it healthy for women to have a hoe phase?”. Right, so first I asked myself what that even means. As always, I'm so happy when you guys send me messages privately and tell me what you think of an episode, or what's been going through your mind. This episode is very personal. This episode is the first part of a series on psychedelics. They're all very short. My friend Charlotte, who studies zoology in her final year at the University of Aberdeen, shares her knowledge on the effects of psychedelics on humans and animals. In this episode specifically, we talk about what the word “psychedelic” means and what substances are considered to be psychedelics. Charlotte also shared some facts about reindeer urine and the Salem witch trials. It's only 5 minutes, so have a listen! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/runasruminations/support
No Walls: www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4LFruQO4gA instagram: https://www.instagram.com/junolee.mp3/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/junoleemusic/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/runasruminations/support
In this episode, I outline a bunch of question prompts that I use to reflect on the year that's past. It is a mindfulness and gratitude exercise- something that is perhaps especially needed after 2020. The questions also take you into the next year: we focus on who we want to evolve into, what we want to let go of, and what we want to focus on in the new year. I also share info on a free meditation and yoga retreat that I found out about recently. All the info is in this last episode of the year. Please give it a listen, share episodes that you've liked around, and let me know what topics you'd be interested in for next year. Thank you for listening to Runa's Ruminations. Happy New Year everyone! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/runasruminations/support
