Known to millions as “Curl Vision” Dusty is THE most influential Curl Specialist in the world (2M+ followers on social media). In building an entire ecosystem dedicated to curly hair with platforms like CurlVision and CurlMaps, and destinations like Thairapy, he's on a mission to redefine what it means to take care of people and their natural curly hair by challenging industry norms and empowering people to embrace the beauty of their natural texture… without compromise. Today, he specializes in dry curly cuts that embrace the hair's natural texture and are uniquely tailored for each client. From real curly civilians as he calls them to creators and more (like the Kalogeras Sisters), Dusty takes a people-first approach to make people feel good and confident with the best version of their curly selves. In November 2025, he introduced the first-to-market salon concept that will forever change the access, cost and experience for those with curly hair (an unperfected market that is set to reach $15.7 billion by 2031) with the flagship opening of Curly Hair Salon in Fullerton, CA. In the 2k+ square foot salon there will be something unexpected – no sinks, no hot tools, no product application, and absolutely no brand merchandising or transactions. This salon will immediately fill the gap in the market by providing excellent and efficient curly, wavy, and coily hair haircuts at an accessible price point (under $100), with experienced curly hair specialists, with no waitlist and under 60-minute appointments. Send us Fan MailVogue called Tracy Ellis Ross's afro a “cloud bob,” and I couldn't let that slide. Not because the photo wasn't stunning, but because that one little rename reveals a whole system: the way Black hair gets rejected as “too much” until it's repackaged with softer language for a wider audience. The hair didn't change. The narrative did. And when the narrative changes, so does who gets access, who gets praised, and who gets policed. As a hairstylist, I've watched Black women carry the weight of other people's opinions about our natural texture. I've seen the unlearning, the second guessing, and the feeling that something needs to be “fixed” just to be seen as professional. So when mainstream beauty media suddenly elevates the same coils and kinks under a trendy new term, it raises the question I can't ignore: was it ever about the hair, or was it always about who had the power to name it?I'm also pulling back to look at Black hair history, because this isn't just about a magazine caption. Our hair has always been tied to identity, community, and culture, and language is one of the first places that erasure slips in. This bonus finale closes season five while giving you a clear preview of season six: deeper conversations on texturism, racism, hair politics, and how perception shapes what the world calls “beautiful.”Subscribe so you don't miss what's next, share this with someone who needs to hear it, and leave a review telling me one word you wish people would stop using to describe Black hair.Support the showDo you have a story to share that's worth our listeners hearing, please fill out the Listener Letters Form and tell us your story! Today, we're tearing down the concept of "Clean Beauty" with a woman who built a company on the radical idea of honesty. Our guest is Kate Assaraf, founder of DIP, the sustainability-forward haircare company that's redefining beauty without plastic or pretense. After years inside the beauty machine, Kate witnessed firsthand how marketing excluded real women and, crucially, how "greenwashing" obscured the truth. She created DIP to disrupt this cycle, challenging the very language of the industry. DIP believes the era of "Clean Beauty" is over. As Kate puts it, calling something "clean" is often just a distraction—a term with no legal meaning that often fuels chemophobia, an unreasonable fear of chemicals. (Let's remember, water is a chemical, right?) DIP is calling time on misleading marketing callouts like "non-toxic," "chemical-free," and "naturally derived." Instead, they choose transparency, intentionality, and hard data.Kate Assaraf is the founder of DIP, a sustainability-forward haircare company redefining beauty without plastic or pretense. After years in the beauty industry, Kate saw how marketing excluded real women and greenwashed the truth—so she created DIP to do things differently. DIP makes salon-quality shampoo and conditioner bars that are plastic-free, travel-ready, and built to last. But more than that, it's a brand with a mission: empower small, women-owned refill stores across the country to thrive.Kate's 7-figure business doesn't rely on Amazon or big box retail—instead, she invests directly in Main Street. From funding store build-outs to launching exclusive local-only scents, Kate is proving that sustainable beauty can be good for people, the planet, and your profit margins. Named NJ Mompreneur of the Year, a Forbes Council Member, and Oprah's 2025 #1 Pick for Curly Hair, Kate is a fierce advocate for small business, honest marketing, and conscious consumerism.

Introduction Miss Liz will pour a cup of laughter, leadership, and liberation with Kate Assaraf, founder of DIP—a sustainability-forward haircare company rewriting the rules of beauty and business. After witnessing how the industry sold perfection instead of truth, Kate built DIP as a rebellion: no plastic, no paid influencers, and no manipulation—just high-performing, honest products made for real people.Named NJ Mompreneur of the Year and honoured by Oprah in 2025 for creating the Best Conditioner Bar for Curly Hair, Kate proves that sustainability isn't just an environmental choice—it's a mindset of resilience, reinvention, and radical honesty. She's not just redefining beauty. She's rebuilding the way we see ourselves and each other. Closing Summary As Teatime closes, Kate Assaraf reminds us that real beauty isn't filtered—it's fearless. Her journey from marketing executive to sustainability activist shows what's possible when you trade pretense for purpose and convenience for community.“You can care for the planet, your business, and yourself—all at once. You just have to stop asking permission.” — Kate AssarafMay tonight's Teatime remind you that reinvention is an act of courage, and that every choice—no matter how small—has the power to disrupt the world for good.#TeatimeWithMissLiz #MissLizsTEE #KateAssaraf #DipAlready #SustainableBeauty #ReinventionActivist #RealisticSustainablePeople #TeachingEducationalAwareness #TranscendEmbraceEnvision #RealLifeChangemakers #OneCupAtATime #MissLizTee #WomenInBusiness #EcoFriendlyLeadership
In the second part of our curly hair girl series, we read all of our listeners submitted stories!! From nicknames, to receding hairlines, to being told men wouldn't like our hair type, it is truly an adventure. We also go through tips and tricks to take care of our hair and keep it healthy even in stressful times.
Send us a textWatch on YouTubeThe curl chart went viral, but it never learned your life. We sit down with Minnie of Shag Noir Salon ATX to unpack why letters and numbers can't tell you what your hair needs; and what actually can. From porosity and pH to water hardness, climate, and stress, we share a simple way to decode your hair's real behavior and build rituals that work in the real world, not just on a grid. Minnie takes us through her journey working with every texture, the hard-earned lessons of salon education, and the honest talk clients crave: growth versus length retention, the myth of “complicated” natural hair, and why a minimal routine often outperforms a product haul. We break down how to spot influencer noise, when to trust a pro, and how to track what's working with photo journals and small, measured tweaks. You'll hear practical approaches for detangling with tension, choosing lighter milks for low-porosity hair, sealing for high-porosity strands, and using chelating when hard water dulls your results. We also go deeper on texturism and language. Words like “nappy” don't just sting; they shape behavior and stress. We explore how reframing our vocabulary can change how we care for hair, how bias shows up in chairs and feeds, and why preference in technique isn't prejudice but context. If your goal is “soft and manageable,” we show you how to get there without chasing someone else's pattern. If you love a silk press, we set realistic expectations about reversion, maintenance, and strand health. Your hair is a living system; responsive, resilient, and personal. Trade the chart for curiosity, build a ritual you can keep, and make peace with what you have while getting the feel you want. If this conversation helped, follow, subscribe, and leave a review. In the first part of this two-part episode, Sana and I take a deep dive through our childhood experiences of having curly, “nontraditional” hair in a south asian household. From being told to get keratin treatments, to having our hair constantly braided all the time so it wouldn't look “messy”, and having our beauty constantly compared to our mothers and sisters, there is a lot to talk about! We also talk about keeping our hair healthy in times of stress, different types of brushing techniques for curly hair, hair oil being our friend, south asian beauty standards, and more! In the second part of this episode, which will be released next week, we will be reading audience entries! Many of you submitted curly girl hair stories, and we will be reading and reacting to them, as well as adding our own takes. Make sure to stay tuned!

I still can't believe we pulled this off. Twenty-five women gathered at my house for a tea party that turned into so much more than food and flowers. We had homemade dips, Red Lobster-style cheddar biscuits, Trader Joe's blooms, and all the laughter that happens when women who love business and life show up in one space together. As we prepped and cooked, the conversation got real. We talked about investing, partnerships, managing properties from across the country, raising kids who think like entrepreneurs, and even curly hair routines (because of course it did). Somewhere between the biscuits and the charcuterie board, we found ourselves talking about what it really means to build wealth, freedom, and community without losing ourselves in the process. This day reminded me why I love what I do and why the Society of Entrepreneurial Women exists in the first place. When women come together, share openly, and cheer each other on, there's nothing we can't build. If you've been craving a space where ambition meets authenticity, this episode is for you. Send us a textHave you noticed how quickly conversations about Black baby girls turn to their hair texture and skin tone? This episode dives into the uncomfortable reality of how our community scrutinizes Black girls from the moment they're born, sometimes even before. When Cam Newton's child's mother, Jasmine Brown, spoke out about the constant questioning of her daughter's hair and complexion, she hit a nerve that resonates with countless Black mothers. "Why are y'all so freaking critical of little black girls?" she asked, calling out a practice so normalized we barely recognize it anymore. The truth is, this obsession with Black girls' aesthetic features isn't just annoying, it's rooted in generations of colorism and texturism dating back to slavery. We've internalized these beauty hierarchies so deeply that we perpetuate them with our seemingly innocent questions: "Does she have hair","What's her complexion", "Is her texture more like yours or his?"What's most concerning is how these questions prioritize appearance over personality, health, or development. We're subtly teaching our daughters that their worth depends on their curl pattern and skin tone before they can even understand words. And when someone like J Brown calls it out, they're often gaslit or accused of exaggerating. As both a hair professional and a mother, I've seen both sides of this dynamic. I've caught myself comforting moms worried about their baby's hair growth and wondered about my own daughter's features during pregnancy. This episode isn't about shame but awareness. Our daughters deserve to be celebrated for who they are, not what grows from their scalps.Ready to break this cycle? Share this episode with someone who needs to hear it. Send us a textWatch on YouTube!Nia Ford returns to unpack the deep, quiet ways texturism affects Black women's relationship with their hair, from childhood experiences to adult self-acceptance. We explore how external criticism and family dynamics shape our perception of beauty, particularly for those with kinky, coily textures. Nia shares how her childhood love for big hair shifted after hearing classmates with looser textures praised for having “good hair,” and we discuss the role family members play in either perpetuating or challenging texturism, including how parents with different hair textures approach their children's hair. She rejects the concept of “bad hair” entirely, favoring the idea of “healthy” versus “unhealthy” hair, and addresses how shrinkage often causes people to underestimate both the length and beauty of type 4 hair. We also explore the importance of finding products that work specifically for your hair type rather than following trends, reframing hair care from being a “chore” to an act of self-love and acceptance, and why giving your hair a name (like Tabitha Brown's “Donna”) can foster a more loving relationship with your natural texture. In this enlightening deep dive, we unravel the truth about these controversial ingredients and why they might actually be beneficial for your curls. Discover the science behind common silicones like dimethicone and cyclomethicone, and how they work together to create the perfect balance of protection without heaviness. Far from being the moisture-blocking villains they're often portrayed as, these intentionally formulated ingredients can seal the cuticle, lock in hydration, reduce frizz, and shield your strands from environmental damage, heat styling, and even hard water. The problem isn't silicones themselves but how they're used. We explore who benefits most from silicone-based products, proper application techniques, and why regular clarifying is essential to prevent buildup. You'll learn how to incorporate silicones into a balanced hair care routine and recognize whether they align with your specific texture, porosity, and maintenance habits. The natural hair journey is about education and personalization, not blindly following trends or fearing ingredients without understanding their purpose. Making better product choices & understanding your hair & scalp needs Kameese Davis, a mother of two from Birmingham, is a self-proclaimed entrepreneur, visionary and information geek. She has created her own vegan haircare brand, Nylah's, after she struggled to find products for her daughter's needs when she was only 4 years old and suffered from seborrheic dermatitis. There was nothing natural that she could use for her scalp condition and hair type.In the end she resorted to sourcing products from America, which was costly and time consuming, making it unreliable long term. She shares her journey, along with her own experience of hair loss, which added to the struggles of starting her own business. We discuss how some product brands are only concerned with the bottom line, even using waste products at ingredients to maximise profit, regardless of the impact on the end user. She also talks about ingredient consciousness, and how many products ,marketed to black women are dangerously high in chemicals or toxic. She has created a product line that celebrates her daughter's identity and her natural beauty.Connect with Kameese:InstagramNylah'sWebsite Hair & Scalp Salon Specialist course Support the showConnect with Hair therapy: Facebook Instagram Twitter Clubhouse- @Hair.Therapy Donate towards the podcast Start your own podcastHair & Scalp Salon Specialist Course ~ Book now to become an expert!

She is an award winning ER physician, and has battled health issues which has led to hair loss and poor hair condition.Dr Ellana shares that after her issues with her health, having thyroid cancer and surgery, medication and dealing with fertility issues, she found that she began to develop a greater awareness of the ingredients in the products she was using. Many products on the market contain harmful chemicals, such as endocrine disruptors, and she was keen to move away from this. As a natural problem solver who is inquisitive and has a degree in chemistry, she decided to create her own product brand. We discuss the health equity & disparity in medicine, and also in haircare, and Dr Stinson describes how there is still a lot of work to be done to accurately assess how safe the products and chemicals used in salons are, and regulations around safe usage practices such as ventilation etc.She shares how education is key, as some products have hidden chemicals or confusing labelling, and how you can find healthier alternatives. We're kicking off the second season of the Curl Code by sharing a vulnerable, illuminating, sometimes hilarious and alwways incredible conversation from the launch party of the show last year. This live event brought together curlies and non-curlies of different generations and backgrounds to discuss lived experiences of having curly hair. Regardless of what else we might not have in common, we discovered funny and not-so-funny stories of hair trauma, struggle, and finally, embrace that revealed to us the things we share, and helped us learn about what's changed--and still needs to change--to allow all of us to live as our most authentic selves and embrace our curly crowns. Our non-curly allies helped us understand their own experiences and limitations, and even our wavy and swavy friends got a little reassurance that there is a place for them in the the curl universe too! This conversation exemplifies the openness, authenticity and healing we stand for in this show, and at the Curly Oasis salon and education platform. We hope you'll find solidarity, companionship, and discovery in this show, and realize that whatever you hair trauma or curl experience may be, you are not alone! She is a hairstylist and makes wigs in all colours. She used to have long hair, but after shaving it off in 2018 to support a friend who was having chemotherapy treatment, she found she loved short! Have a question for Hunter? A topic you'd like him to talk about? Feedback? Text us here!Welcome back to The Modern Hairstylist podcast! In this episode, we dive deep into the world of curly hair with the incredible Martina Nicholas, a texture expert and educator who is revolutionizing the industry. Martina shares her personal journey of embracing her natural curls after years of straightening treatments and how it transformed her career. Her passion for educating others on proper curly hair care is evident as she debunks common myths and misconceptions about texture and curly hair, offering invaluable insights that every hairstylist should know. One major highlight of our conversation was Martina's emphasis on the importance of water in curly hair care. She explains how water should be viewed as a crucial product in itself, essential for maintaining curl elasticity, reducing frizz, and ensuring product absorption. Martina provides practical advice on how to incorporate water effectively into curly hair routines, from shampooing and conditioning to styling. This simple yet profound shift in perspective can significantly improve the health and appearance of curly hair, making it a must-know for both stylists and clients alike. We also tackled the often-debated topic of cutting curly hair wet versus dry. Martina, a staunch advocate for dry cutting, shares her expertise on why cutting curls dry allows for more precision and better visualization of the final shape. She discusses the unique challenges presented by different curl patterns and the importance of customized cutting techniques based on individual client needs. This approach ensures that the natural beauty and integrity of curly hair are preserved, providing clients with a style that complements their texture.Additionally, Martina sheds light on the misconceptions surrounding protective styles and the use of oils in curly hair care. She explains how overuse of heavy oils can lead to dehydration, making hair difficult to manage. Instead, she advocates for moderation and proper maintenance of protective styles to avoid damage. Her insights on how to responsibly lighten curly hair while preserving curl integrity are invaluable, especially for clients seeking a color change without compromising their natural texture. For those looking to deepen their knowledge and skills in curly hair care, Martina offers a variety of educational resources, including virtual classes and one-on-one training. Her hands-on approach and brand-agnostic product knowledge make her an exceptional mentor for stylists aiming to excel in this niche.
