Making better product choices & understanding your hair & scalp needs Kameese Davis, a mother of two from Birmingham, is a self-proclaimed entrepreneur, visionary and information geek. She has created her own vegan haircare brand, Nylah's, after she struggled to find products for her daughter's needs when she was only 4 years old and suffered from seborrheic dermatitis. There was nothing natural that she could use for her scalp condition and hair type.In the end she resorted to sourcing products from America, which was costly and time consuming, making it unreliable long term. She shares her journey, along with her own experience of hair loss, which added to the struggles of starting her own business. We discuss how some product brands are only concerned with the bottom line, even using waste products at ingredients to maximise profit, regardless of the impact on the end user. She also talks about ingredient consciousness, and how many products ,marketed to black women are dangerously high in chemicals or toxic. She has created a product line that celebrates her daughter's identity and her natural beauty.Connect with Kameese:InstagramNylah'sWebsite Hair & Scalp Salon Specialist course Support the showConnect with Hair therapy: Facebook Instagram Twitter Clubhouse- @Hair.Therapy Donate towards the podcast Start your own podcastHair & Scalp Salon Specialist Course ~ Book now to become an expert!

Hi, my name is Nolyne and i am the host of this four years old beauty podcast. As you can here, i am French so i apologize for my terrible accent but I had to make this episode understandable in english because it is very good. Before I tell you about the upcoming episode, I must share a memory with you, one from the early days of my career as a journalist, and you'll see how it ties in. It was precisely in 2015, and I was working at ELLE's digital editorial team. The beauty world was just starting to experience the boom we now know so well. Social media was gaining momentum, consumers were becoming increasingly savvy, and brands were rethinking both their formulas and their visual identities. I remember the flurry of discoveries in terms of concepts and creative direction. To give you a sense of the time, the famous brand Glossier, a true indicator of this new era in beauty, had been born just a year earlier in the United States. There I was, barely out of my acne struggles, discovering a whole new world. Among those discoveries was a brand with tall, brown bottles that were both sleek and comforting, with labels that were minimalist yet clear. The big surprise was realizing these were haircare products infused with skin-care-grade ingredients, something that had never been extended to the scalp before. Today, we would call that 'skinification.' The scents were equally surprising, very refined and invigorating. My curiosity was piqued, and I began my research, but information was scarce, almost secretive. From that moment, it was clear: I wanted to be part of this world. And here we are, nearly 10 years later, delving into the subject through my own platform. The brand in question is Sachajuan, or Sachajuan for French speakers. These are haircare products conceived by a Swedish hairdresser named Sacha Mitic, with an extraordinary story. He invited me to visit his homeland on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of his work. What a discovery it was! The man who describes himself more as an artisan than a hair artist is as comfortable wielding scissors for major magazines as he is for his clients. I truly believe he is a visionary, notably because of his keen sense of detail and observation. These qualities have allowed him to create his own line, which I personally find brilliant and deserving of far more recognition here in France.-----Creative direction : Alice de BeauchampInterview and edit : Nolyne CerdaHébergé par Ausha. We're kicking off the second season of the Curl Code by sharing a vulnerable, illuminating, sometimes hilarious and alwways incredible conversation from the launch party of the show last year. This live event brought together curlies and non-curlies of different generations and backgrounds to discuss lived experiences of having curly hair. Regardless of what else we might not have in common, we discovered funny and not-so-funny stories of hair trauma, struggle, and finally, embrace that revealed to us the things we share, and helped us learn about what's changed--and still needs to change--to allow all of us to live as our most authentic selves and embrace our curly crowns. Our non-curly allies helped us understand their own experiences and limitations, and even our wavy and swavy friends got a little reassurance that there is a place for them in the the curl universe too! This conversation exemplifies the openness, authenticity and healing we stand for in this show, and at the Curly Oasis salon and education platform. We hope you'll find solidarity, companionship, and discovery in this show, and realize that whatever you hair trauma or curl experience may be, you are not alone! Curly hair, like hair colors, is often used to represent something specific about a character on screen. Sometimes curly hair is a positive signifier – like of an untamable strength within a character – but for a long time curly hair was used as an indication that something about a character needed to be changed and, well, straightened out. In recent years, things have begun evolving as we've seen more and more characters come to love their hair (and themselves) as is, following on the back of real world movements to do the same. So let's unpack the different tropes that have sprung up around curly hair on screen (good and bad) and how we're finally bouncing past those into a much more positive, accepting place.
Have a question for Hunter? A topic you'd like him to talk about? Feedback? Text us here!Welcome back to The Modern Hairstylist podcast! In this episode, we dive deep into the world of curly hair with the incredible Martina Nicholas, a texture expert and educator who is revolutionizing the industry. Martina shares her personal journey of embracing her natural curls after years of straightening treatments and how it transformed her career. Her passion for educating others on proper curly hair care is evident as she debunks common myths and misconceptions about texture and curly hair, offering invaluable insights that every hairstylist should know. One major highlight of our conversation was Martina's emphasis on the importance of water in curly hair care. She explains how water should be viewed as a crucial product in itself, essential for maintaining curl elasticity, reducing frizz, and ensuring product absorption. Martina provides practical advice on how to incorporate water effectively into curly hair routines, from shampooing and conditioning to styling. This simple yet profound shift in perspective can significantly improve the health and appearance of curly hair, making it a must-know for both stylists and clients alike. We also tackled the often-debated topic of cutting curly hair wet versus dry. Martina, a staunch advocate for dry cutting, shares her expertise on why cutting curls dry allows for more precision and better visualization of the final shape. She discusses the unique challenges presented by different curl patterns and the importance of customized cutting techniques based on individual client needs. This approach ensures that the natural beauty and integrity of curly hair are preserved, providing clients with a style that complements their texture.Additionally, Martina sheds light on the misconceptions surrounding protective styles and the use of oils in curly hair care. She explains how overuse of heavy oils can lead to dehydration, making hair difficult to manage. Instead, she advocates for moderation and proper maintenance of protective styles to avoid damage. Her insights on how to responsibly lighten curly hair while preserving curl integrity are invaluable, especially for clients seeking a color change without compromising their natural texture. For those looking to deepen their knowledge and skills in curly hair care, Martina offers a variety of educational resources, including virtual classes and one-on-one training. Her hands-on approach and brand-agnostic product knowledge make her an exceptional mentor for stylists aiming to excel in this niche. Supporting hair growth through chemical burns, scarring alopecia and menopause. Angela Fields is from Florida. She first experienced issues with her hair when she suffered from chemical burns, following the use of relaxer to straighten her hair. She then began to experience thinning in perimenopause, and discovered that she had a deficiency in Vitamin D. After these issues were resolved, she then developed a scarring condition, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, known as CCCA, and has had to undergo scalp injections and biopsies to help to identify and treat this . Hair health at this point became extremely important to Angela, but, as she has an allergy to fragrances, she found that she was unable to use 96- 98% of haircare on the market that contains fragrance. She decided to make something for herself in her kitchen, but after being laid off from her job in the corporate world she was pushed to take the product range to market. She now works to help & support those with hair health concerns, particularly leading up to the menopause, and has created a supportive community where she offers education and advice. The curly hair movement – and market – is growing, as more people learn to style and to celebrate their natural hair. This hour, we hear from one salon that's just for natural curls in Connecticut. Luvena Leslie opened The Curly Hair Salon in 2011. "So many people have had bad experiences before they come to us," Leslie says. Viola Clune, a Yale student and editor of the New Journal, recently wrote a piece about salons like Leslie's, and the work they do to untangle "hair trauma," titled "Kinks in the Movement." She joins the conversation. Clune writes that The Curly Hair Salon "exists as a contradiction, intervention, remembrance, and stagnation at once. The ever-growing salon industry in New Haven suggests that there is something complementary about these contradictions, something inherent about them..." Plus, the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford has a new exhibit all about the optics and politics of hair. A curator joins us to discuss Styling Identities: Hair's Tangled Histories, on view through August 11. We also hear from one archivist who contributed to the exhibition and created an accompanying zine. GUESTS: Luvena Leslie: Owner, The Curly Hair Salon in New Haven Viola Clune: Editor, The New Journal and author of the article “Kinks in the Movement" Jama Holchin: Lead Curator for "Styling Identities: Hair's Tangled Histories" at The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art Where We Live is available as a podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Amazon Music, TuneIn, Listen Notes, or wherever you get your podcasts. Fola Evans-Akingbola is both a critically acclaimed actor and activist for the rights of her community. As a curly haired woman of color working in film and TV Fola, has been forced to experience feelings of frustration and isolation simply due to having a curlier hair texture than her straighter haired colleagues on set. From constantly having to guide and direct stylists on how to simply do their jobs due to their lack of experience with her curl pattern to have to go as far as to create her own ‘how to' video to guide ‘professionals' on set to avoid any mistakes or damage to her natural hair, Fola, much like many of her peers, has frequently had to invest time, energy and resources into making sure her hair is properly cared for when she should be focussing on the role she's been hired to play. As a result, Fola created an incredible documentary, Untold Stories: Hair on Set, to highlight these issues, allowing a range of male and female creatives in her space to be able to speak their truths, helping raise awareness and bring this discrimination to an end. I talk to Fola about her reasons for creating the documentary, some of the stand out moments for her on her hair care journey, and look forward to what needs to change in order for the incredible work she initiated with her documentary to continue.FOLLOW FOLA ON SOCIALS:INSTAGRAMFOLLOW UNTOLD STORIES: HAIR ON SETINSTAGRAMWEBSITE FOLLOW TEXTURE TALKS ON SOCIALS:INSTAGRAM TIKTOK WEBSITESPONSORS:INSTAGRAM WEBSITE Teresa and Eleanore Richardson from Fulham Scalp and Hair Clinic are an absolutely INCREDIBLE black female mother daughter led team of highly experienced Consultant Trichologists who since 2011 have provided the afro and curly haired community with help, support and guidance to get our hair care journeys back on track. As such highly respected Afro hair Trichologists I couldn't think of a better sponsor to partner with on the next segment of Texture Talks and to guide me personally on my own natural hair care journey.Learn more about them at www.fulhamscalphairclinic.com and use discount code TEXTURETALKS5 for 5% off your consultation fee.

Introducing our sister podcast, the Curl Code! Hosted by Wafaya Abdallah, owner of Curly Oasis, a curl salon and education platform in Rockville, MD, the Curl Code explores individual stories of how learning to embrace our natural hair can be the start of a journey to embracing and empowering our most authentic selves. Each episode reveals a unique story of the day someone acted on a decision to learn about caring for their curls, and started a process of transforming how they view the world, society, and themselves. On this episode, Wafaya interviews her dear friend and warrior for the sake of humanity, Luby Ismail founder of Connecting Cultures, which works to fight Islamophobia and ignorance, and teach intercultural exchange. Luby and Wafaya grew up in the same era in Egypt, longing for straight, silky hair, wielding hot irons and chemical relaxers to try and meet the beauty “ideal.” In adulthood, Luby became an intercultural educator and public speaker, and realized that she couldn't be authentic in her teaching if she wasn't authentic in herself. That was when her journey to embracing her curls began, with Wafaya as her guide. Her journey also includes living with multiple sclerosis, and in this episode, she educates us on how even when we have the best intentions, we can fail to see the fullness of lives that differ from our own, or the narrow-mindedness of our own point of view.Luby's whole family is committed to dispelling prejudice and building bridges; from her son's environmental activism to her husband, Alex Kronemer's film company, Luby has devoted her life to making the "foreign," "familiar," and working for the betterment of humanity. Traditionally, the salon business in the United States has been a segregated one. And while stylists at salons in the Black community performed braids, twists, weaves, relaxers, and silk presses on a daily basis, most white stylists had little or no knowledge of textured hair. In the past few years this has been changing, with more beauty schools providing and requiring texture education. Textured hair is increasingly visible in the media, more women are choosing natural styles, and more children are being born with mixed heritage. But our industry still has a long way to go. Want to learn about texture but don't know where to start? We've got you covered. Today's guest, Jamal Edmonds, is the owner and creative director of Lamaj in the City, located in Washington D.C. He's a stylist behind the chair and an educator for Mizani and Redken, specializing in textured hair. Jamal has been nominated for NAHA awards in 2018, 2021, and 2022. In this episode Jamal and host Blake Reed Evans talk about how to learn textured hair, and dig into understanding the trauma your client may have experienced around getting their hair styled. Also: doing textured hair on set, and competing in the North American Hair Association (NAHA) Awards. This episode was originally published in December 2021.Follow Jamal Edmonds on Instagram @lamajbackwards.Get texture education online with the Mizani Texpert Academy: thetexpertcollective.com/head-of-the-class.SUMM IT UP is produced by Andrea Muraskin, with editorial support from Tim Fisk. Curly Hair Keeps Your Scalp Cooler According to a fascinating new study, curly locks are better than straight hair at keeping your scalp cool. Researchers shone bright lights on three different manikins—one with no hair, one with loosely curled hair and another with tight curls. Solar radiation bounced off the tightly curled hair, and less heat reached the manikin's scalp than the straight haired manikin. The manikin with loose curls was right in the middle. The research is part of an effort to better understand the role of hair texture in human evolution, as humans are the only mammals with the majority of body hair atop our heads. Ira talks with Dr. Tina Lasisi, a postdoctoral researcher in the department of quantitative and computational biology at the University of Southern California, and incoming assistant professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. Unprecedented Avian Flu Outbreak Continues Avian influenza has been circulating for decades among wild birds, but the US is now experiencing the worst outbreak in its history. That's because of a specific strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza, which has left around 60 millions birds—mostly poultry—dead. This has implications for us all, whether you're frustrated about the price of eggs, worried about your backyard chickens, or concerned about yet another threat to public health. In this live call-in, Ira talks with Ashleigh Blackford, the California Condor Coordinator at the US Fish & Wildlife Service about the initiative to vaccinate California condors—the first of its kind to vaccinate any bird. Then Ira explores what this outbreak means for other wildlife, poultry, and for us. He talks with Dr. Kristy Pabilonia, professor and director of the Veterinary Diagnostics Laboratories at Colorado State University, and Dr. Richard Webby, director of the WHO's Collaborating Center for Studies on the Ecology of Influenza in Animals and Birds and a researcher at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
