After believing she wasn't worthy, Maria Morgan was eventually able to make her way back to joy, with time and hope. It took a deepened faith, her husband living out his vows, the love of friends and family, along with the power of prayer to make the difference. It's a family affair. That is the name of a song that was made famous by a group called Sly and the Family Stone way back in the day (feel free to Google). Today for your listening pleasure, we have Shaun and the Family Stone, as in a fun play on words. Dedicated to family, and one family in particular with the last name of Stone, Shaun and I take a conversational approach to the Christmas movie, The Family Stone. We watched it together this year in preparation. Here are our insights, thoughts and feelings. Oh, and maybe a verklempt moment or two. There is a lot of love for this movie, and for me, with good reason. Shout out to Hillary and Robyn, fellow Family Stoners.I was so excited to have this conversation that I forgot to plug in my mic! Isn't your parent the one who is supposed to keep you safe and protect you? Well, yes, but it doesn't always go that way. Cindy Benezra knows this all too well. Her abuse came from her father while her mother lacked the courage to make it stop. If only this were an unfamiliar story. Sadly it is not. Our Grief and Gratitude guest understands how her family looked from the outside but appearances can be deceiving. Thankfully she created tools to help her survive and later, to thrive. Maybe grief is like a boulder set in your path that you have to figure out how to grow around. It's not going anywhere, you can't move it, so you find ways up, over, around and beyond it. That is the metaphor Kelsey Ellis used in describing the grief of losing her sister from Covid complications. Kelsey is our Grief and Gratitude guest this week. I also appreciated her expression that “grief is love with nowhere to go.” Well then, what do you do? In Kelsey's case you start an organization that creates a place for grief. One that is out in nature, near the water, where you can remember your loved one, honor them, and be grateful for the love you shared. She started Waves of Grief for that very purpose. Thanks for being part of the UY conversation. The Unabashed You website has a page for each guest of photos, quotes and a blog with embedded audio at unabashedyou.com. What do you do when someone you love dies? Especially when it isn't the natural order of things?Well, you can do what I did. You let yourself feel, all of it. You don't want to but you need to. You don't run, hide or look for a shortcut although I would definitely have gone for that. I'm your Grief and Gratitude guest this week and I recount the time when our child died. Not just the sadness of it all but the hope that can be found during, and especially after. In fact I turned the whole experience into a project (book) Standing Tall: A Collection of Hope.I know I'm sharing something I stand to profit from. That's not my point at all and in fact I care little about that. My intention is to support you in a time of need and for you to realize you are hardly alone. Beyond that, that you would seize the hope. It's there. It's ripe and it's ready for you.And the gratitude? Yes, it's there in abundance. My advice there? So who would you be if you weren't afraid? The first time I heard that question I stopped in my tracks. The truth of it really spoke to me. That was several years ago and I still think of it often. I've come to think of fear and confidence as being on the same continuum. When your fear is high your confidence is low. When you have more confidence, or belief in yourself, your fear is minimized, manageable.Looking at drying up fear Is like the sun shining its light in our growing/blooming analogy. In this episode we'll look at five of what I think of as the most common fears that stunt our growth:• The What-if Game• Not-good-enough• People-Pleasing• The Comparison Trap• Imposter SyndromeThere are different strategies to counteract each. Check out the blog that goes with this episode for more. Remember that anxiety and worry are giving power to the problem. You need to shine a light on it, know what it is and then decide to work towards not letting fear stop you.Lastly we will take an overview of confidence and ways we can increase it. There are five Ps to cover and they come courtesy of the wisdom of the guests we had during our recent Confidence Series. Confidence is the fertilizer of the growing, blooming analogy. It is as important as knowing yourself and minimizing fear. It takes all three to fully blossom. And let's not forget this is our part while we surrender to God or your higher power to do theirs. Let's be clear. I am not into self as a form of ego, pride or toxicity. I am into loving yourself as a creation of God because remember when he made man he said it was very good. And we are. Already good enough, I know we struggle with the reality of it. Fear creeps in, self-doubt lingers and we become less than, we settle. This is the part I am speaking to, the part I want to remind myself about every day.Self-realization is defined as the act of fully developing one's abilities and talents, or achieving the possibilities of one's personality or character; it is fulfilling one's potential. So in other words, it's healthy. This is what I want for me, it's what I want for you. Are you there? Because I know I'm not. Yet I get to keep pressing forward and onward. I believe this is what God wants for me, for you.Today we've got part 2 of the Becoming in 3 series. We are looking at knowing yourself. Why does it matter? It matters because you do. And you want to live the very advice you give your kids or anyone that you love. You want it for them. Why not want it for you?The content is from a workshop I gave for Social Club Live with Isha Casagrande. I am really big on the ING of things: becoming, growing, fulfilling, etc. It indicates the present and it says I'm not done yet. I want to keep expanding into the fullness of who I am until my last breath. I want that for you too.Today we begin a 3 part series on becoming with an emphasis on the ING. I think of it like this. You are like a seed that wants to, that has the potential to, become a beautiful, seen and appreciated, flower. Yes, the colors vary. There are so many possibilities and that is some of the very best life has to offer. Like me, you likely don't want to get to the end and wish you'd been more, done more. Now I'm not talking about worldly metrics, I'm talking about doing what you could with what you have, being all you could be. You would not want that seed to stay a seed or to even stay in a stunted growth state. No, you would nurture it into being all that it can be. I've always loved this quoteTo achieve all that is possible, you must attempt the impossible,To be all that you can be, you must dream of being more. That is courtesy of John C. Maxwell. It was written in a card someone gave me when I was really struggling with a crippling bout of anxiety. This woman who was in a support group with me, wrote it to encourage me, to inspire me. I've since forgotten her name but I have not forgotten how those words made me feel. That was well over 30 years ago and I've kept those words close to my heart. This is an invitation to join me for a 3-part series of becoming, heavy emphasis on the ING. Other people know it, and you know it too. Welcome to our Superpower Series. With greater awareness comes greater decisions. Jacinta Richmond shared that nugget in this episode and I think it's true. The more you know the more you can become. And isn't that what most every superhero realizes? Be sure you can see that, and be that in yourself. Jacinta is aware and able to see the possibilities, what could be whether it be in people, places or products. She can't help herself. That's her superpower - seeing potential.
