This is our unabridged interview with Azim Khamisa. How do you forgive the man who killed your son? In 1995, Azim Khamisa's only son Tariq was shot and killed while delivering a pizza. The killer was a 14-year-old gang member named Tony Hicks, and due to a recent change of law in the state of California, Tony was tried as an adult and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. But instead of responding with a call for outrage or revenge, Azim did the unthinkable: he forgave his son's killer, and he fought for his release. “My interpretation of this tragedy was that there are victims at both ends of the gun,” he says. In this episode, he tells the full story of how he uses his experience to help end youth violence, even recruiting his son's killer to join in the work. Allan Clarke is a British musician celebrated for his role as the lead vocalist of the legendary rock band, The Hollies. With a career spanning decades, Clarke's distinctive tenor voice and songwriting prowess have left an indelible mark on the history of rock and roll. Clarke co-founded The Hollies in the early 1960s with childhood friends Graham Nash, Eric Haydock, Tony Hicks, and Don Rathbone. Their harmonious blend and melodic pop-rock sound catapulted them to international stardom. Hits like "Bus Stop," "Carrie Anne," and "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" became anthems of the era, showcasing Clarke's emotive vocals and contributing to the band's enduring legacy. As a songwriter, Clarke collaborated with Nash and Hicks to pen some of The Hollies' most iconic songs. His ability to craft timeless tunes solidified the band's chart-topping success and earned them a permanent place in the pantheon of rock music. In 1971, Allan Clarke briefly embarked on a solo career, releasing albums such as "My Real Name Is 'Arold" and "Headroom." Despite the solo endeavor, Clarke rejoined The Hollies in 1973, and the band continued to produce hits, notably "The Air That I Breathe." Beyond his musical achievements, Clarke's enigmatic stage presence and charisma made him a captivating performer. His influence transcends generations, and The Hollies' catalogue remains a testament to his enduring impact on the world of music. Clarke's return to The Hollies in the '70s marked another chapter in their success, with a continued string of hits. His distinct vocal style, characterized by soulful nuances and emotional depth, remains a defining element of The Hollies' sound. Allan Clarke's legacy extends beyond his contributions to The Hollies, encompassing solo ventures, songwriting brilliance, and a significant footprint in the evolution of rock music. His name is synonymous with harmony, melody, and the timeless resonance of classic rock—a testament to a remarkable career that has left an indelible mark on the global music landscape. Allan has recently released a new album - Resurgence - fulfilling a long time dream to collaborate again with Graham Nash.  The album comes after he, his wife and his daughter all battled with cancer and as a result, finds Allan unable to hit the high notes that he's become so famous for. Determined to continue doing what he loves, Allan has penned many of the tracks on this album so that he's able to sing in a lower key. The result is simply stunning. I am excited to have Allan Clarke in conversation in this episode, sharing stories from his incredible musical journey. I know you'll enjoy hearing his tales too. If you'd like to know more about Allan, head for his website https://www.allan-clarke.co.uk/ and if you have any requests for future guests on A Breath of Fresh Air, please get in touch with me through my website https://www.abreathoffreshair.com.au

Tony Hicks is currently in his 7th professional season, having played in countries like Hungary, Germany, Venezuela and more, but this basketball career wasn't always a dream of his. Tony actually grew up in Chicago wanting to be the next great NFL quarterback, modeling his game after Chicago legend Donovan McNabb. Tony mentioned that this “late bloomer” timeline actually helped his basketball career by helping him avoid the mental and physical burnout that many early basketball specialization athletes run into during their careers. Tony's basketball started to take off as a sophomore at Chicago [football] powerhouse St. Rita High School, where he began to draw major interest on the court from D1 schools around the country. After a summer injury that took him out of that football season, he began to prepare for that basketball season and next looked back. The rest was history, and the story is still being written as his 7 year professional basketball career continues to blossom. In this episode, Tony takes us through his dominant career at Penn, his grad transfer year at Louisville with the legendary Rick Pitino and the different stages of growth throughout his pro career. Tony is currently in the top league in Hungary, coming off the best year of his career and looking to continue to take the leaps he has over the past few seasons. Disciple! Today, Pastor Michael is talking about the Twelve Disciples spreading the Good News.   It's not easy to share it, not knowing who to share it with, but we are disciples making disciples, as the twelve were so many millennia ago.   Jesus sent out the disciples, two by two.  So everyone had a buddy.  Back in those days, under Jewish law there was a requirement for two witnesses for a testimony to be verified.  So, in modern terms, try to have someone that you can talk the Gospel with, share your Christian walk with and study together.  Jesus made us for community.   Jesus told them to take nothing for the journey; it was a minimalist event, to be sure.  All but empty-handed, they were sent out to make disciples.  They were also told to stay at people's houses; this was a hospitality culture.  Folks in those days would take in strangers, a situation that has pretty much changed these days.  And Jesus mentioned not to go house hopping, either.   Finally, Jesus allowed that if they were not welcome, to shake the dust off their feet and leave.  That was a cultural metaphor, the Orthodox Jews in those days, when they walked through Gentile territory, would shake their shoes off at the border.  And they were preaching folks about repentance.  Something folks don't readily accept, but it's merely realizing you're on the wrong road.   So, who are YOU sharing life with?  Who can YOU share the Good News of Jesus Christ with?  If we are making disciples, are you being discipled? And, who are you discipling?  We believe reaching people is more important than serving our comforts and our preferences.   Thanks to Tony Hicks for his powerful testimony! (CSB Study Bible Notes) 6:12-13 That people should repent was the content of their preaching, modeling the messages of John the Baptist (1:4) and Jesus (1:15). The ministry of the Twelve is summarized as preaching and teaching (6:30), exorcism, and healing. Anointing sick people with oil is mentioned here, in a parable in Lk 10:34, and in Jms 5:14.   Verses can be found today in Mark 6: 7-12, Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12, and Matthew 28: 18-20.   Scripture quotations marked CSB have been taken from the Christian Standard Bible®, Copyright © 2017 by Holman Bible Publishers. Pretty Funny Nicole Presents Pretty Amazing People

Azim Khamisa is an inspiration. This is a powerful episode where Azim shares then and now. It was wonderful to hear the update on Tony Hicks and his Grandfather as well. Please enjoy this special episode.Following the loss of his only son Tariq in 1995 to a senseless, gang-related murder, Azim chose the path of forgiveness and compassion rather than revenge and bitterness. This amazing choice led to the establishment of the Tariq Khamisa Foundation (www.TKF.org) and the subsequent forgiveness movement which has reached millions. Founded by Azim Khamisa in honor of his son, the Tariq Khamisa Foundation (TKF) was established in 1995 after Tariq Khamisa, a 20-year-old college student was killed by Tony Hicks, a 14-year-old gang member. Tony became the first child in California under the age of 16 to be convicted as an adult. He was sentenced 25 years to life in prison. Believing there were “victims on both ends of the gun,” Tariq's father, Azim Khamisa, reached out in forgiveness to Tony's grandfather, Ples Felix, to begin the process of healing; together they established TKF. TKF's goal is to stop youth violence through education, mentorship, and community service programs.Hailed by dignitaries such as the Dalai Lama, former President Bill Clinton, and Al Gore, Azim carries his inspirational message of forgiveness, peace, leadership, and hope into a world in desperate need of each.

Legal Grounds | Conversations on Life, Leadership & Law

We've talked a lot about the emotional aspects of leadership on this podcast, and the concept of vulnerability is (I hope) a through-line that appears in each episode. But there is another emotion that I don't think we've covered in-depth: forgiveness. Now, I know we've touched on this idea, especially in the realm of forgiving one's self, but I can't say we've ever dedicated an entire episode to the concept. That is until this week. Not only has my guest become a master on the subject of forgiveness, he has done so in response to one of the most heartbreaking tragedies one can imagine - the loss of a child. Azim Khamisa was an international banker pursuing the American Dream when in 1995 his only son, Tariq, was murdered while delivering pizzas part-time. Tariq's killer, Tony Hicks, was only 14. He would become the youngest person in California history to be tried as an adult. These facts alone would have made Azim's story a notable one, but it was the steps he took after his son's murder that make it one for the history books. Shortly after losing Tariq, Azim met with Tony's grandfather, Ples Felix, and together they began what is today known as the Tariq Khamisa Foundation with a mission to teach non-violence and conflict management to young people. And the foundation of their work is rooted in radical forgiveness and restorative justice. Azim and I discuss what it means to truly forgive, the necessity for a belief in something bigger than yourself, and why violence is a behavior that can be - thankfully - unlearned. This one is definitely on the heavier side, but I think it's well worth the listen. Enjoy the show! -Azim's TED Talk-Azim's Books-Azim's Courses

One of the last British Invasion groups of the 1960s, and one of the few grroups that never disbanded, was Manchester's own The Hollies.  Alan Clarke and Graham Nash founded the group, and after a few iterations joined with Vic Steele (lead guitar), Eric Haydock (bass), and Don Rathbone (drums) in a group known as the Deltas.  They would first be known as The Hollies at a Manchester gig in December 1962, taking the name from both the Christmas season and in admiration of Buddy Holly.  By 1967, Steele had been replaced by Tony Hicks, and Rathbone by Bobby Elliott.  Eric Haydock would be replaced by Ernie Calvert in 1966.The Hollies' Greatest Hits was released in May 1967 after their fifth studio album, though they had only achieved major U.S. success in 1966.  This album showcases their three-part harmonies and the sound reminiscent of many early 60's British Invasion bands.  They did covers and songs from other writers at first - a common practice in bands at the time - before becoming comfortable writing their own material.  Though The Hollies had many decades more music and hits to come, Graham Nash would depart a few months after this Greatest Hits collection was released to join his new band, Crosby, Stills & Nash.  This collection is a good representation of the early days of this iconic band. Bus StopThis was the first U.S. top 10 hit by the group, released in June 1966.  Songwriter Graham Gouldman wrote this piece using opening lyrics first written by his father, playwright Hyme Gouldman.  Graham Gouldman would later be a member of the band 10cc.On a CarouselClarke, Nash, and Hicks penned this song.  These three would form the core of the songwriting for The Hollies after they began writing on their own.  Previous hits were from Graham Gouldman or covers.  It was originally released in February 1967 as a single, and captures the spirit of young love.Look Through Any WindowThis one hit the charts as a single in the US in September 1965, and was their first top 40 hit. “Look through any window, yeah, what do you see?  Smiling faces all around, rushin' through the busy town.”Stop, Stop, StopReleased in the US by Imperial records in October 1966, this track has a distinctive sound with a banjo as lead instrument and employing a tape delay to give it an eastern feel.  It was inspired when the band was taken to a strip club for the first time.  “Stop, stop stop all the dancing.  Give me time to breathe.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the motion picture “To Sir With Love”Sidney Poitier stars and singer Lulu contributes this song (and makes her film debut) in this drama about social and racial issues in an inner city school. STAFF PICKS:“Creeque Alley” by The Mamas & The PapasRob kicks off the staff picks with an autobiographical piece on how The Mamas & The Papas formed.  The line “and no one's getting fat 'cept Mama Cass” could refer to Cass Elliott's weight, ...or to her financial situation, as she was making more money than the rest of the band!“I Got Rhythm” by The HappeningsBruce takes us way back with a show tune originally composed by George and Ira Gershwin in 1930.  The Happenings were known for playing classic songs in a sunshine pop style.  “I Got Rhythm” would make it to number 3 on the US charts with this version.“From the Underworld” by The HerdWayne's staff pick features a 17 year old Peter Frampton!  This song was the first UK hit by the group, and was inspired by the story of Orpheus and his flight from Hades.  The psychedelic tune was payed on Pirate Radio in the UK, where radio broadcasts were conducted from ship to avoid the BBC.“Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” by Neil DiamondBrian's pick is a hit from Neil Diamond addressing the female fans at his concerts directly.  Diamond was a sex symbol at the time, and his audience skewed female, as demonstrated by the apparel thrown up on stage.   LAUGH TRACK:“Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead” by The Fifth EstateThis may be more novelty than comedy, but your ears do no deceive you.  That's right, this song from "The Wizard of Oz" made it into the charts this month via this cover by The Fifth Estate.

PARTS HARMONIOUS            PROGRAM NOTES In today's VINYL VIBRATIONS podcast, I tour LP records from the 1960s and 1970s in ROCK and POP that featured singing in multi-part harmonies. Today’s show, is called PARTS HARMONIOUS. There have been many TWO PART harmony songs recorded… so today, for further interest and in seeking out those more difficult or complex, we will focus on multi-part harmonious singing—songs having at least THREE vocal parts! INTRO to PARTS HARMONIOUS (narrate only the names of the groups) Today we hear multi-part harmonies from songs of these groups: M1 The Byrds, All I Really Want To Do, 1965 M2 The Beach Boys, Good Vibrations (1973 performance), 1966 M3 The Hollies, On A Carousel, 1967 M4 Three Dog Night, One, 1969 M5 The Guess Who, No Time, 1970 M6 Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Teach Your Children, 1970 M7 Poco, Kind Woman, 1971 M8 The Doobie Brothers, Livin’ On The Fault Line, 1977 In today's podcast we will hear eight examples of THREE (or more) PART HARMONIES, produced between 1965 and 1977.  Starting with…The Byrds M1 Song  All I Really Want To Do, Album (Single), Album Artist The Byrds, Composer Bob Dylan 1964, Year 1965 , Released By Columbia Bob Dylan wrote the song in 1964 and recorded it in one take. In 1965 Cher did a cover of this song, and it was the feature of her debut  SOLO album “All I Want To Do”. The Byrds single was rush-released by the band's record label, Columbia Records, when it became known that Cher was about to issue a rival cover version of the song on the Imperial label. The Byrds' version "All I Really Want to Do" was the second single by Byrds and was released in 1965 by Columbia Records  The song was also included on the band's debut album, Mr. Tambourine Man, which was also released in 1965… the single, which we will hear next, begins with Jim McGuinn's jangling guitar introduction (played on a 12-string Rickenbacker guitar), ascending melody progression in the chorus, the Byrds high-register harmonies – are clearly influenced by the West Coast surf sound...   M2 A live version of the song, GOOD VIBRATIONS taped in 1972-1973 and found on the album “The Beach Boys in Concert”  …the second official live album by The Beach Boys,  Song Good Vibrations, Album (Single) (backed with the instrumental "Let's Go Away For Awhile"), Album Artist Beach Boys, Composers Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Year 1966, Released By Capitol Records. The Beach Boys was formed in 1961, initially composed of brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. The Beach Boys were managed by the Wilsons' father Murry, and signed to Capitol Records in 1962. The band's early music gained popularity across the United States for its close vocal harmonies . Brian Wilson and Mike Love composed "Good Vibrations" a single released in 1966. The song featured a complex, multi-layered sound. Brian Wilson described "Good Vibrations" as a "pocket symphony”. The song became the Beach Boys' biggest hit to date and a US and UK number-one single in 1966; Good Vibrations was reputed to have been the most expensive American single ever recorded at that time. The production of the song is reported to have spanned seventeen recording sessions at four different recording studios, and used over 90 hours of magnetic recording tape, with an eventual budget of $50,000.  The group members recall the "Good Vibrations" vocal sessions as among the most demanding of their career, and featured elaborate layers of vocal harmonies. M3 Song On A Carousel, Album (single), Album Artist The Hollies, Composers Alan Clarke, Graham Nash, Tony Hicks, Year 1967, recorded Abbey Road Studios, Released Parlophone and Imperial On a Carousel was written by Allan Clarke, Graham Nash and Tony Hicks. It was released by The Hollies as a single in 1967 on the Parlophone label in the UK and the Imperial label in the US.

“This man’s grandson killed this man’s son.” This is how our guest, Azim Khamisa, is often introduced when he appears before groups gathered to hear him speak. His story begins back in 1995 when his only son, Tariq – a 20-year-old student – was shot and killed while delivering pizzas in San Diego. His killer, Tony Hicks, became the first 14-year-old to stand trial as an adult in the state of California. Tony received a 25-year-to-life prison sentence. Not long after his son’s death, Azim founded the Tariq Khamisa Foundation – an organization committed to stopping children from killing children. He also invited Tony’s grandfather and guardian, Ples Felix, to join him in this cause, and the two of them have since been sitting side-by-side on stages across the country sharing the power of forgiveness. Azim has also forgiven Tony, lobbied for his release from prison, and plans to hire him at the Tariq Khamisa Foundation when he is freed.
