Sign up for our newsletter! The site of a recently retired coal plant in Indiana County is getting a new life as a data center. Plans have been scrapped for a controversial plastic recycling plant in Erie. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to boost coal production, but it may not do much to reverse the industry's fortunes. A new book highlights the natural beauty of the Youghiogheny River. Nearly 2,000 top scientists, engineers and medical researchers signed a letter saying that the Trump administration is decimating the nation's scientific enterprise. Federal funding for the Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub could be on the chopping block according to reporting by Politico. A federal appeals court has temporarily blocked a rule to limit silica dust exposure for coal miners. Federal energy labs in Southwestern Pennsylvania and West Virginia could become the sites for data centers to support artificial intelligence. The EPA announced it will finalize water quality standards to protect fish in a portion of the Delaware River.  We're independent and non-profit, and we don't get money from WESA, WPSU or any other radio station. Bud Cook 50th Legislative District Pennsylvania House of Representatives GO BIG & COME HOME!! Representative Cook recently spoke at the Washington County commissioners monthly meeting about his newest initiative – “Come Home…GO BIG!” The initiative highlights Southwestern Pennsylvania, which consists of Washington, Fayette, Greene, Westmoreland and Allegheny counties, as the best place in the Commonwealth to live and work. “I stood before the commissioners and asked for a committed partnership from them in pursuing this idea,” said Cook. “I want to publicly thank them for the opportunity to present Come Home…GO BIG! I look forward to potentially working with them in the months to come.” - said Rep Cook In May 2021, Cook started to ask the public “Why Not Here?” As many people had the opportunity to work from anywhere during the pandemic, he questioned why people wouldn't want to live and work in one of the tightest-knit communities in the Commonwealth. Thus, began his focus to make Southwestern Pennsylvania a home for many and a tourist destination for others. This episode is LOADED with tons of information about buying land, developing the land, perc tests, creative financing, and custom-building a high-end container home! What are you waiting for? Check it out!   Bill Goglin has spent the last 23 years in corporate America. Recently leaving the corporate world and now going all in, to the world of real estate investing.    Bill grew up in Southwestern PA just South of Pittsburgh or (Picks-burgh if you want to say it correctly). Bill worked for Verizon going from sales rep to store manager of an A-level store in Florida and then to the world of Learning and Development to help create leaders for his company.    Later moving to Georgia and going through the Covid years and some self realizations, Bill decided to follow a passion and move into real estate investing. Alexandra Bodnarchuk is a Carpatho-Rusyn American choreographer and cultural activist based in Minneapolis, MN. As the Artistic Director and choreographer for Doma Dance Theater, Bodnarchuk creates original works for the stage and screen that draw together her ethnic heritage with contemporary movement practices. Centering the body as a tangible site of culture, Bodnarchuk explores questions of self-expression, community, dispossession, and cross-cultural identity through works that range from solo pieces to ensemble works.Bodnarchuk is a 2021 Ann & Weston Hicks Choreography Fellow at Jacob's Pillow and a 2022 & 2020 Jerome Hill Artist Fellow Finalist (Jerome Foundation). Her second evening-length work, Rock, Paper, Scissors, was presented by The Southern Theater in March 2023.In 2024 she released her second dance film Mamko Moja L'uba, which is named for a folk song popularized by Carpatho-Rusyn singer Maria Mačoskova, and featured costumes inspired by traditional clothing from the Zemplín region in Eastern Slovakia. She also completed a commission for The Museum of Russian Art, responding to Serbian sculptor Zoran Mojsilov's surrealist exhibition, The Dry Neck of the Pig. She is currently working on two commissions to premiere in Spring/Summer 2025, including being a Featured Artists in Arena Dance's 2025Candy Box Dance Festival.Bodnarchuk is the daughter of first- and third-generation immigrants. She was raised in Pittsburgh, PA, where she studied European folk traditions, including classical ballet and Slavic and Balkan folk dance. Southwestern PA, which hosts an active community of Eastern European folk organizations, has the largest concentration of Carpatho-Rusyns in the United States. As a member of the North Hills Junior Tamburitzans, Bodnarchuk was taught by the renowned Željko Jergan with a primary focus on Croatian dances. She also performed with the now-shuttered Slavjane Folk Ensemble, the sole Carpatho-Rusyn children's dance ensemble in the United States. Under the direction of Jack Poloka she toured Slovakia, Poland, and Ukraine, exploring the diasporic homeland and cultural landscape of the Carpatho-Rusyns.Bodnarchuk graduated from Bodiography Contemporary Ballet's College Preparatory Program and then earned a BFA in Dance Performance and Choreography and BA in French from Ohio University (OU). During college, she spent a semester in Avignon, France, training at the Conservatoire d'Avignon under Cyrille de la Barre. She also studied Ghanaian dance and drumming under the direction of Paschal Yao Younge and Zelma Badu-Younge and was amember of their group Azaguno African Dance Ensemble.Embracing her role as a cultural activist, Bodnarchuk has continued to deepen her study of and connection to Carpatho-Rusyn cultural traditions by visiting her ethnic homeland and learning the Rusyn language. By amplifying her ethnic heritage and probing the connections among the Carpatho-Rusyn experience and diasporic communities around the world, Bodnarchuk offers a potent invitation to rediscover the unrecognized histories embedded in each of us.

The three-part series will feature SRP-funded researchers and collaborators whose research focuses, in part, on understanding the distribution and fate of PFAS in the environment. The second session will highlight case studies featuring SRP research to understand PFAS sources and to predict fate and transport. To learn about and register for the other sessions in this webinar series, please see the SRP website. Matthew Farrell is a Ph.D. candidate working in the Planchart Lab at North Carolina State University (NC State) working under Antonio Planchart, Ph.D. Matthew will present on the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of several PFAS through aquatic food chains. He will expand on how this research was modeled through a system beginning with contaminated water and continuing with periphyton, larval mayflies, and zebrafish — tracking PFAS burdens through each step in the food chain. Mark Brusseau, Ph.D., of the University of Arizona will discuss the conceptual and mathematical models for PFAS retention being explored in his lab. He will also describe the chemometric tools used to develop the first quantitative structure-property relationship model for predicting interfacial adsorption coefficients for PFAS. This QSPR model can be combined with our comprehensive retention model to predict the retention and migration potential of PFAS in soil and groundwater systems. Carla Ng, PhD., of the University of Pittsburgh will provide an update on activities to reveal PFAS contamination in Southwestern Pennsylvania, an area that has received relatively little focus compared to other parts of the state. The talk will specifically address a case of accidental release in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, and efforts to understand the life cycle and contribution of legacy and ongoing industrial activity on PFAS profiles in the region. While pollution mitigation and control is vital to the environment, scientists are finding more and more problems for the humans that live near polluting corporate sites. Unfortunately in the name of jobs and profit, companies have produced pollution while ignoring or hiding the human health from their work, often producing what is known as "sacrifice zones" -- areas where the pollution is dangerous for people who often cannot leave. The Environmental Health Project has taken on the difficult job of using health science discern the short and long term effects of gas fracking and plastic production on local populations. On this week's podcast we welcome Alison Steele, who tells us the good, the bad and the ugly of trying to help communities protect their health from the perils of corporate practices that could affect these communities for generations.Alison L. Steele, MBA, is the Executive Director of The Environmental Health Project (EHP), a nonprofit public health organization that assists and supports residents of Southwestern Pennsylvania and beyond who believe their health has been, or could be, impacted by shale gas development and other polluting industries in the area.. As part of her graduate work, Alison studied sustainability tools and practices used by leading companies in Europe, performed consulting services for large Pittsburgh-area companies, and published research on organizational behavior techniques used to aid adoption of sustainability initiatives. Prior to starting at EHP, she led policy and education efforts at Conservation Consultants, Inc. and developed the company's flagship grassroots community engagement program, which focused on advancing home health and energy efficiency in low-income Pittsburgh neighborhoods. In this episode, Colleen and Janice want you to imagine watching a stunning sunset over the vast, blue seascape while feeling gentle breezes and sand between your toes.  Would you believe THIS is Indiana?!?!?!  It is and it can be enjoyed regularly at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.  Joined by Superintendent for the National Park Service, Paul Labovitz,  and founder of Dig the Dunes, Eve Wierzbicki, Colleen and Janice confirm there is a slice of paradise in Northwest Indiana.  Paul Labovitz started his National Park Service career in the Rivers & Trails Program and would go on to serve in Philadelphia, for the Midwest Regional Office at Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio, Voyageurs National Park and Mississippi National River & Recreation Area in Minnesota.  Paul has worked on park and protected area projects in over 25 states and in several European countries.  Now 26 years later, Paul serves as Superintendent at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.  Prior to working for the NPS, Paul was a Forester, Wildlife Biologist and Manager at a 10,000 private property in Southwestern Pennsylvania after earning a BS in Forest Science from The Pennsylvania State University.  He would later receive his MBA from Frostburg State University.  Paul serves as a strategist on the Urban National Park work group.  Their goal is to reach a new generation of National Park stewards.  He also serves as the Midwest Region's Superintendent Representative to the NPS Tourism Council.  Eve Wierzbicki started Dig the Dunes because of her love for the area. She began taking photos and posting them on Facebook and found that people really enjoyed seeing where she was every day. After watching her page grow, Eve started writing blog posts, created a website and added much more information for people to discover. Now she enjoys planning events and workshops and getting people out and about all year long. She's excited to watch Dig the Dunes grow and looks forward to seeing what will happen next!15:04 Paul Labovitz interview begins42:10 Eve Wierzbicki interview beginsHosts: Colleen Brennan and Janice V. In this episode I was able to sit down with all five members of the Southwestern Pennsylvania hardcore band Speaking in Tongues. Being able to sit down with an entire band to discuss their music is always fun and Speaking in Tongues did not disappoint. Each member in the band very clearly brings something different to the table and to say that they have almost visible synergy is an understatement. From hearing about their creative process to finding out how they bring their live shows to the forefront of the scene was a truly inspiring experience and I feel lucky to have sat down with a band that has their vision so clearly etched. I look forward to everything they do in the future and I highly suggest that anyone who enjoys heavy, purposeful music to check them out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/eddy-dziadon/support

Welcome Back No-Problem Parents! Every Behavior is Communication! It can be tough to deal with behaviors.  Perhaps your child is biting, hitting, kicking, spinning, running into walls or climbing on everything. Maybe as they've grown their risk-taking behaviors are increasing, their attention span is decreasing or maybe they just don't seem to have any ambition to try new things and their self esteem is suffering? Step one of No-Problem Parenting is to "Seek first to Understand "why my child is behaving the way they are" and why am I, the parent, responding or reacting the way "I am?" Well today we're gonna do just that.  My guest Kristan Weisdack is going to help you get to the heart of the "problem" that you've otherwise considered a mis-behavior. Her company offers outpatient (virtually and in-person) services as well as in-person and virtual training for parents and professionals that are often frustrated and overwhelmed when navigating behavior issues with their child or learner, particularly those with autism. This holistic approach to behavior is incorporated into every facet of what she and her team do to help others understand and navigate behavior successfully. Are you a parent of a child with autism, ADHD, or behavioral issues who is frustrated with your current service provider?
