Confined in a Soviet prison camp in 1941, Polish painter Józef Czapski chose a unique way to cope: He lectured to the other prisoners on Marcel Proust's novel In Search of Lost Time. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe Czapski's ambitious project and the surprising importance of literature to the prisoners of oppressive regimes. We'll also race some lemons and puzzle over a woman's birthdays. Intro: A piano keyboard can be used as a calendar mnemonic. After the Civil War, thousands of Confederates settled in Brazil. Nick Pon has been an associate perpetrator at the 24 Hours of Lemons since 2006. The 24 Hours of Lemons is an endurance road racing series where the drivers are limited to $500 or less to build their cars. Pretty much any four-wheeled machine, that is street legal when made, is eligible. Nick’s past includes being the editor at Corvette Magazine, assistant editor at Excellence Magazine, and he’s written for Sports Car International, a variety of online outlets, and he is a professional photographer having shot for numerous automotive events and publications. Nick’s also a Vespa enthusiast and rider. The 24 Hours of Lemons was founded by past Cars Yeah guest Jay Lamm and other past Lemons guests include Jeff Bloch, known as Speedy Cop, and Eric Rood.
Eric Rood works for the 24 Hours of Lemons as a Media Stooge, BS Judge, and Special Projects' Puppet for this $500 endurance-racing series. Eric is a latecomer to the car hobby, having delved into the automotive world by helping to build a Lemons car in 2010. After racing Lemons a couple times, he started writing about cars in his spare time, focusing on cheap-car endurance racing and the oft-ignored world of obscure or forgotten Rust Belt junk. That grew into full-time, general automotive and motorsport freelancing work in 2016 with contributions to Roadkill, BangShift, and other outlets. Today, Eric enjoys spending his spare time in junkyards, watching motorsports, and wrenching on his own Lemons-grade project cars.

Eric Rood | Veteran Aviator Oral Histories On Episode 37 of Veteran Voices: The Oral History Podcast, we talk about recording veterans oral histories in the world of aviation with Eric Rood of the Experimental Aircraft Association's Timeless Voices of Aviation project. Eric Rood of Columbus, Ohio has been capturing, preserving, and sharing veterans’ stories since 2006. In addition to recording locally, each year Eric travels to the Experimental Aviation Association’s annual convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin to interview veteran aviators—on the fly, so to speak. Being at Oshkosh working with EAA's Timeless Voices of Aviation project is a wonderful experience for any oral historian or aviation enthusiast (Eric is a pilot, himself), but it is a technical challenge to record so many interviews in such a short period of time. But, he admits, preserving these stories is our obligation to history and a tribute to our veterans' service—especially our WWII veterans. Producer's Note: Nick Grimes is the host of Longest War: The Post-9/11 Veterans Podcast and a combat Army veteran of Afghanistan. This episode was recorded at the Allegheny-Kiski Valley Historical Society and Heritage Museum in Tarentum, Pennsylvania. It is a production of The Social Voice Podcast Network. Host: Kevin Farkas. Audiography: Kevin Farkas. Music (available on Soundcloud.com): John892 (“Despair”) Abbey Fiddler (“Hatchet D”), Zippo for Wisdom ("Japanese Gal Riddim"). ©Veteran Voices: The Oral History Podcast/The Social Voice Project, Inc.
