The African Association of Automotive Manufacturers (AAAM) says it fully supports the government of Ghana as it continues to implement the provisions in its new Automotive Development Policy (ADP). The policy has, since its inception in 2019, seen three new plants start the assembly of Volkswagen, Toyota, Nissan and Peugeot models. This is in addition to Ghana's own assembler, Kantanka. Now, Hyundai, Kia and Isuzu models are to be added to the line-up before the end of the year, says the AAAM. The association adds that it has been able to interest a number of component manufacturers in considering partnerships to invest in manufacturing capacity for the aftermarket, to be followed by the production of original equipment manufacturer parts. This has seen Ghana add an automotive component manufacturing policy to the ADP. “The government of Ghana is to be applauded for implementing the APD,” says AAAM CEO David Coffey. “The government has also committed to developing vehicle financing schemes to support the purchase of locally assembled vehicles.” “A progressive automotive policy is essential for any country wishing to attract significant investment from international companies for either component or vehicle manufacturing, and Ghana was the first to do so after the established vehicle manufacturing countries of Morocco and South Africa,” adds Coffey. “Egypt has recently announced their new automotive policy and we are working with a number of other African countries to do the same. “The automotive industry is gaining traction in Africa, where we will see trading between assembly hubs across the continent, with Ghana being a hub in West Africa. “Ghana is on a very exciting path that will have profound economic benefits in the medium and long term,” notes Coffey.

Sales of new vehicles in Africa have started to recover from a “disastrous” pandemic-hit 2020, says the African Association of Motor Manufacturers (AAAM). Fresh vehicle sales statistics, compiled for AAAM by the Africa Automotive Data Network for Africa (AADN), show that 2021 sales increased to 1.13-million units, up from 856 133 units in 2020. The 2021 figure is still some 20 000 units below that of the 2019 number of 1.15-million units. These numbers represent total industry sales volumes as reported by manufacturer by market. For sub-Saharan Africa only, the volumes exclude heavy commercial vehicles, as these are not reported, but are estimated by AADN to be less than 5 000 units a year. Of the 1.13-million new vehicles sold in 2021, 548 504 units were sold in North Africa; 499 087 units were sold within the Southern African Customs Union, with the remaining 83 658 new vehicles sold in the rest of sub-Saharan Africa. New-vehicle sales volumes in South Africa improved by 32% in 2021, but were still down by 7% over 2019. In the rest of sub-Saharan Africa, volumes increased by 15% in 2021, but were down by some 10% over 2019 volumes. “The improved new-vehicle sales volumes in 2021 are encouraging and show that markets are recovering as life on the continent and many other places in the world is slowly normalising after the Covid pandemic,” says AAAM CEO David Coffey. “We believe that this positive trend will continue into 2022 with the reported quarter-one sales for 2022 already some 9% up over 2021. “Growth will also start to accelerate as more countries in Africa embrace the industrialisation and growth opportunity presented by the continental automotive strategy, which could see new vehicle sales reach 5-million units a year by 2035,” notes Coffey.

The Covid-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on new-vehicle sales in Africa, which are expected to drop from 1.16-million units in 2019, to a current forecast of 830 000 units this year, says African Association of Automotive Manufacturers (AAAM) CEO Dave Coffey. “This is a 28% reduction, which is quite significant. “However, the market will recover, and we believe that new-vehicle sales on the continent can increase to five-million [units] per year in the medium term.” The AAAM is actively promoting the rollout of vehicle manufacturing value-chains in Africa, which requires intervention from governments to curb illegal, grey and second-hand imports, as well as the drafting of policies to support local vehicle and parts assembly. Coffey says second-hand and grey vehicle imports constitute more than 80% of vehicle sales in Africa. “With an effective auto ecosystem, this can be reduced to an acceptable ratio that enables integrated auto manufacturing, whilst ensuring the safety of the consumer without major disruption to the existing used-car market. “Ultimately all second-hand vehicles should come from vehicles that were assembled on the continent, or that were imported as new vehicles, as part of an automotive programme.” Coffey says the automotive industry plays a “disproportionately small role” in manufacturing Africa. “In 2019, new-vehicles sales in Africa represented 1.3% of global demand, while Africa has 17.2% of the world’s population.” The economic benefits of having a fully-fledged integrated auto manufacturing sector are considerable, adds Coffey. “It requires advanced manufacturing technologies, while it also creates a deep value chain and skilled employment. “The significant growth to five-million vehicles sold in Africa requires the implementation of effective automotive policy – the core focus of the AAAM. “The opportunities for growth exist if one considers the young population, rapid urbanisation and extremely low rate of motorisation [in Africa]. “The potential is huge.” Coffey spoke at an AAAM and Deloitte Africa Automotive Forum event.
