Opeyemi Makanjuola joins our host to discuss Adulting 101. In this conversation, Opeyemi shared how her journey began after working with the Ministry of Women's Affairs. The conversation focuses on the everyday issues children and even young adults go through, ranging from puberty-related issues to sexual violence, peer pressure, addictions, suicidal intentions, and so on. She also talked about the Bridging the Gap initiative a mentorship program for the aggressive social and emotional issues young people encounter as they transcend into adulthood. The silence culture, whereby the victim has to hide their experience due to the stigmatization they would face was also discussed. Listen here........

Today's episode is going to be everything about adulting. I feel like I can talk about it, I am 23 and have lived on my own for about a year and a half now, almost two years. I feel like I have gotten a good handle on it and it's still fresh so I understand the thought process and the thoughts that might be going through your head if you're wanting to move out or are going through that process... or maybe you are a recent post-grad or are nearing it. Internalized limitations and belief systems can really hurt young women when it comes to owning their authentic narrative and creating a fulfilling life for themselves. This week, our host Thamina is joined by Rebekah Bastian, Founder of OwnTrail, a peer-to-peer support system platform for women, to talk about how to embrace your authentic, non-linear life path. Rebekah herself fell into her first job out of college by accident and also refers to founding OwnTrail as "accidental entrepreneurship".Rebekah's advice to young female professionals: Take inventory on which belief systems serve you and which aren't. Embrace uncertainty while also not shying away from having difficult and vulnerable conversations with yourself and those around you.She believes that there is no one right path but the more we own our story and choices, the more progress we make. Set-backs and facing obstacles doesn't mean we're doing life wrong, it means we are human.Don't forget to create your own individual trail and be inspired by other badass women's vulnerability and authenticity.

Motherhood Later in Life: Celebrating Our Joy!

The "teen contract," for us, defines the expectations that we have for our kids, their responsibilities, and the positive and negative consequences of the actions they take. It helps them understand that they get more responsibility as they get more freedom. And that is the key: BALANCE. It helps us in the transition of power and we get to step back and relax a bit as they get more power. After all, our goal is to help them become self-sufficient adults who can create happy lives for themselves.

My daughter wanted to know if adulting ever gets any easier. And the answer is, "No." But being a self-sufficient, responsible person always leads to more freedom and happiness. We have to understand, though, that with more freedom also comes more responsibility. We have to be willing to accept our mistakes and learn from those mistakes.

Adulting 101. A podcast on everything they NEVER taught us in school.

On the second episode in the Pivoting Series, I interview Marc Chin, DJ of the world-renowned sound Coppershot. Marc Chin's ultimate goal is to bring happiness to people and he surely accomplishes that each times he plays at an event. In 2020 when COVID-19 hit, Marc made the decision to pivot to real estate. With the support of his family it has been a great transition for him. In the interview Marc also speaks about his mental health during the period and how he dealt with it. His passion for brining happiness to people through music translated to his new role, where he is able to provide people with the security of a new home. According to Marc the show must go on and we should always strive to be a better version of ourselves each and every day. I'm not okay with how well they're doing! I felt hurt, abandoned, and miserable. Talk about childhood baggage on my part, but knowing I have that baggage allows me to rein in my feelings and be a good mom. Personal Branding is what people say about you when you are not around. Who are you? What do you stand for? What are your core values? In the age of social media, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook we have to become more aware of the things we are not only posting about but liking and comment on, as we are leaving our digital signature, our stamp of approval on these things. We have to think about our reputation as well, how do we make people feel after they have had an interaction with us. Based on our personal brand will people recommend us for that job, refer our business to other people etc. On this week's episode Naomi Garrick, Lead PR Chick from Garrick Communications breaks down Personal Branding for us and shares why it is so important to each and everyone of us.
