Margaret Nowaczyk's Marrow Memory: Essays of Discovery is a touching collection of personal essays exploring the impact of genetics, ancestry, and immigration on our lives. In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery talks to Margaret, who is best-selling Polish-Canadian author and pediatric clinical geneticist. In Marrow Memory: Essays of Discovery Margaret Nowaczyk explores different facets of her life, from listening to the radio dramas of her childhood in Communist Poland to her work now as a pediatric clinical geneticist. These are beautifully crafted essays, full of hard-won truths and insights, generously shared with the reader. Whether struggling with English as a teenaged refugee or documenting the process of permanent hair dye, Nowaczyk moves seamlessly between scientific and personal writing, bridging the gap between these two areas with elegance and humour. Marrow Memory is an invitation to readers to explore the ways in which our experiences and identities are entangled with our ancestral history. “Here is a physician who has answered the call to a perilous narrative life in the face of patients' illnesses and her own. To tell and to write, in the end, is to see, however costly might be that sight. How fortunate are her patients and their families for her insight. How indebted is our field of narrative medicine to receive this moving testimony of the powers of shared creativity in our medicine and in our lives.” – Dr. Rita Charon, Narrative Medicine, Columbia University. More about Margaret Nowacyk: Born in Poland, Margaret Nowaczyk is a pediatric clinical geneticist and a professor at McMaster University and DeGroote School of Medicine. I figure we are mostly looking for the truth. And while 'truth' is hard to find, some things bring us closer. Like research. Also it's 2025. What HR debates are we still working through in our hunt for truth? This was the focus of my discussion with Dr. Catherine Connelly. Catherine is a leading HR researcher with a passion for research. When I asked Chat GPT for a 'future of HR' expert, her name was one of the top three. She is a Professor and Business Research Chair in Organizational Behaviour, in the Human Resources and Management department of the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University plus many other qualifications. We talked about: - Hybrid & remote work. I was hoping to settle the debate once and for all, but it's much more nuanced. Are you surprised? - AI - it continues to be biased because it trains on our data. Which has bias baked in. We'll have to audit but even if we could get totally unbiased AI, we still have biased people in our organizations (see the video below). - Employee Experience - We need to focus on the basics. - A theme running through our discussion was the much maligned middle manager. They are critical to success in a lot of this. I hope to try another of these episodes because I believe the pursuit of truth is a fundamental. It's like happiness: we'll work at it, but never quite get there. Still, it's a worthwhile and critical journey. We had an insightful conversation... check it out! We're in the middle of a month in which thousands of Canadians have sworn to boycott any store or product produced by Loblaw Companies Ltd. That includes an awful lot of stores and products, and would require some severe changing of habits. Which is why it probably won't work.It seems that every week we're encouraged to boycott something, but how many of these protests actually result in change from the targeted company, any why? What should Canadians who want to encourage companies like Loblaw to change their strategies actually do to get some traction? And what should boycott organizers aim for to encourage the maximum number of people to join in?GUEST: François Neville, Associate Professor of Strategic Management at McMaster University's DeGroote School of Business Do you have a money problem? THE MEDICAL RECORD: MULTIVITAMINS MAY PLAY A ROLE IN BOOSTING MEMORY OF OLDER ADULTS ACCORDING TO STUDY Libby Znaimer is joined by Dr. Alisa Naiman, Family Physician and Founder and Medical Director of The Medical Station in Toronto, Dr. Malcolm Moore, Medical Oncologist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Dr. Jamie Spiegelman, an Internal medicine and critical care physician at Humber River Hospital. It's Wednesday: time to talk about your health and it is our first medical panel of the new year. Many of us have made health related New Year resolutions - what are the most sensible changes to start and how best to keep them. And before the holidays we talked about the expected increase in heart attacks and overcrowding in emergency rooms. How did this actually turn out? Paediatricians are complaining that a lack of government data on childhood flu is hampering them. And if you listen to weather reports, one of the big questions is when will we see some sunshine? THE CONTROVERSIAL SECOND-HAND CLOTHING MARKET Libby Znaimer is now joined by Megan McPhaden, Managing Editor at Cottage Life Magazine who wrote her thesis on this topic and Baniyelme Zoogah, an Associate Professor at the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University. It's almost a seasonal ritual: purging our closets at the start of the new year and donating the items we no longer want. It may make us feel like we are doing something good but the opposite is true. Most of that stuff ends up in Africa if not in a landfill. And with the increased trendiness of thrifting, people who really need those cheaper things often don't have access. HARVARD'S PRESIDENT CLAUDINE GAY RESIGNS Libby is now joined by Michael Poliakoff, President of the American Council of Trustees and Alumni. After months of pressure, the president of Harvard resigned yesterday. First there was that disastrous Congressional hearing where Claudine Gay, Harvard's first Black woman president, could not bring herself to say that calling for the genocide of Jews violated the school's policies. After that she was accused of plagiarism in her academic work - or at best the failure to properly cite her sources. Yesterday she stepped down also citing personal attacks which she claims were motivated by racism. Listen live, weekdays from noon to 1, on Zoomer Radio!

Stop me if you've heard this before: Canada has a productivity problem. You can't open up the business news without reading dire warnings about what's going to happen to the country if we don't improve our productivity. But what is productivity, anyway? What does it mean for an economy to be more or less productive? How does it affect regular people? Should we even care about this metric? And if so, what can we really do to improve it? William Huggins, a lecturer on corporate finance, economics, and statistics at the DeGroote School of Business, joins us to answer: What productivity is and how we measure it. Why productivity matters for the economy. Why wages have become disconnected from productivity. Why Canada's productivity is lagging behind other developed countries. How some countries without many natural economic advantages have supercharged their productivity. What Canada can do to boost our productivity, and what it would mean for our economy. ----- Links: More episodes of Free Lunch by The Peak: https://readthepeak.com/shows/free-lunch Follow Taylor on Twitter: @taylorscollon Follow Sarah on Twitter: @sarahbartnicka Subscribe to The Peak's daily business newsletter: https://readthepeak.com/b/the-peak/subscribe
