Andrew Penner grew up in the Mennonite tradition of the Anabaptist movement. The Anabaptists have a colorful history of subversion from the Catholic Church, despite their commitment to pacifism. There's an awful lot to learn on these subjects, including the connection with the Amish and Hutterite branches, as well as the variation within the Mennonite conferences. (Jakob Amman and Jakob Hutter were a little more extreme than Menno Simons.)Early Anabaptist beliefs are outlined in the 1527 Schleitheim Confession of Faith, so we discuss these points with Andrew, and get the lowdown on their importance in Menoism, in contrast with the greater network of Anabaptism. Andrew relates these subjects to his own experiences and his family history, and he shares with us how this is affected by his being a Freemason, too.You can WATCH this interview on YouTubeThis interview continues on Patreon Find Holy Watermelon merch at  SpreadshopJoin the Community on DiscordGet more great religion facts in your feed on Facebook and Instagram

Stigma, shame and the fact depression is still (too) often seen as a weakness or failing, cause many people with the common illness to hide their struggles and pain behind a mask. While in moderation this can be a healthy coping mechanism, it can also be dangerous as it prevents us not only from living as authentic human beings, but also from getting the help and support we need to live healthy, connected lives. In this remixed episode, our guest Andrew Penner speaks eloquently about his mask, while therapist Dr. Anita Sanz takes a big-picture view of the coping strategy. https://thephoenixnarrative.blog/ https://themighty.com/u/andrew-penner/ https://twitter.com/andrewpenner78

This week, we have aspiring travel filmmaker, outdoorsman, mental health advocate, and generally "average at most things", Andrew Penner on the show! We talk about a lot of important things, like the positive impacts of the outdoors on mental health, connecting with other cultures, solving the toxicity of social media, being married to a doctor during a global pandemic, but basically spend an inordinate amount of time discussing our (mostly male) celebrity crushes. Our conversation meanders its way through travel stories (and Brittany's utter nonchalance in the face of rifle-wielding extortionists), our favourite things about Steinbach, friendly Canadians, ADHD, our own personal mental health battles, our Week 12 CFL picks, and so much more! Miranda Mulholland and Andrew Penner make music together as Harrow Fair, a fabulous Americana roots duo with a huge sound and exhilarating live show. Featuring Miranda on fiddle, and multi-instrumentalist Andrew on dobro, guitar and more; they released a great sophomore album “Sins We Made” earlier this year – quite possibly the perfect recording for the current times. Harrow Fair should have been on tour in the UK, the US and Canada this year, but because of the Covid-19 pandemic they have been at home in Toronto. We caught up with Miranda and Andrew in self-isolation for a fun chat about the new recording, that reaches far beyond the album, to talk about what it feels like to put everything on hold and stay home while you are supposed to be out promoting and touring a great new release. For more information about the music of Harrow Fair, visit https://harrowfair.ca. Music: Harrow Fair “Sins We Made”, “Rules Of Engagement”, “Loved You Enough” and “Dark Gets Close” from “Sins We Made” (2020, Roaring Girl Records) CDN.

It’s a good news/bad news kind of day. First the good! One of the most electrifying live bands in Canada, Sunparlour Players return to Winnipeg this week after a bit of a wait, so we celebrate with some of their amazing songs and a chat with Andrew Penner, one half of this truly dynamic duo. The bad news this week, is that we had to say goodbye to the great Jesse Winchester. The man’s name wasn’t nearly well enough known, but his amazing legacy of songs and performances proves that he had a larger impact than many would even realize. A heartfelt tribute to this great songwriter, performer, and person is definitely in order.
