Andrew Penner grew up in the Mennonite tradition of the Anabaptist movement. The Anabaptists have a colorful history of subversion from the Catholic Church, despite their commitment to pacifism. There's an awful lot to learn on these subjects, including the connection with the Amish and Hutterite branches, as well as the variation within the Mennonite conferences. One of the most electrifying live bands in Canada, Sunparlour Players return to Winnipeg this week after a bit of a wait, so we celebrate with some of their amazing songs and a chat with Andrew Penner, one half of this truly dynamic duo. The bad news this week, is that we had to say goodbye to the great Jesse Winchester. The man’s name wasn’t nearly well enough known, but his amazing legacy of songs and performances proves that he had a larger impact than many would even realize. A heartfelt tribute to this great songwriter, performer, and person is definitely in order.
