'The Green Sessions was invented because this small group of people got together and decided we wanted to do something that created impact. I'm really interested in new and more opportunities for us to collaborate as a sector and putting people into focus and a place of knowledge on this agenda'Emma Stenning, former Executive Director, SoulPepper theatre companyComplete excerptThe Green Sessions was invented because this small group of people got together and decided we wanted to do something that created impact and we put really a fairly modest amount of money behind it, and a huge amount of hours of time and passion. I'm so, so proud of the impact. For me, there's a big lesson, which is, you know, small group of committed people can really make a difference. I think on this agenda that is really, really encouraging for all of us and that has been very, very inspiring for me. On the, on the flip side, I think what I sent at the green sessions is actually the power that we hold as a community and actually the feeling that our sector is in dialogue about this most, most urgent issue is very, very uplifting and very powerful. I'm just really interested in new and more opportunities for us to collaborate as a sector and putting people into focus and a place of knowledge on this agenda, because that really was a starting hypothesis, which is that our sector needs literacy and confidence in order to step forward with impact and that was our mission. We have scratched the surface of that but I'm very proud of the contribution that we've made and I've very encouraged to do more.Emma Stenning, e71 green sessions debrief, october 1, 2021 *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHere is a link for more information on season 5. In a world where consumers are moving their banking transactions online and leaving branches as remnants of the past, how does one bank differentiate themselves from the other? According to Maja Neable, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), Banking at BMO Financial Group, it is a combination of what consumers think about as a perceived convenience, and the distinctiveness that a bank can create to try and convince consumers that they are really different. The balance for automation and self-service, along with the need for timely advice, is something that banks are trying to figure out. The young Generation Z client believes that they will probably never set foot in a branch, though as their financial needs evolve and they mature in their financial journey, they often realize the need to ask for and get human advice. Therefore, for those value-adding conversations, banks like BMO need to figure out why people should choose to stay with them, and it is mostly a result of being able to simply provide the right advice and truly help them. As we know, many things happen in life and we often need help. That help may not happen physically in the branch. How do you juggle multiple skillsets? How do you keep your skills sharp? Joining the conversation on Cue To Cue this week is Performer/Fight Director/Intimacy Professional Siobhan Richardson who advises us to always reassess and rebalance on what makes us happy, not what other people think you should be. Are you suffocating because you're selecting what you should show the world? Are you being the fullest version of yourself? Release yourself from those shackles! You can be more than one thing at a time and still find fulfillment. You can enjoy and thrive in the diversity of your passions! In this episode: How breaking the shackles from the expectations of others allowed her to thrive in different forms of art and creativity How ballet triggered her journey in movements arts to discovering stage combat and scenes of intimacy The importance of points and pathways in embodying the required movements for scenes of violence The impact of communication in knowing if someone is in trauma response versus being uncomfortable with scenes of intimacy A little about Siobhan: Siobhan Richardson is an award-winning actor/fighter/singer/dancer, Fight Director and Instructor, and Intimacy Director and is a pioneer voice in the Canadian Theatre Industry regarding Intimacy in Performance. She is the preferred Fight Director and Instructor for a number of theatre companies, actors and directors, and a certified Fight Director with Fight Directors Canada. Stage combat teaching has, likewise, taken her across Canada, the USA and Europe. She has taught at international events such as the “Paddy Crean International Art of the Sword Workshop”, “The World Stage Combat Certification and Teacher’s Conference”, “Fight Directors Canada's National Workshops”, and the “Nordic Stage Fight Society's Summer Workshops”. In 2009, she received a “Chalmers Arts Fellowship Award” from the Ontario Arts Council, which allowed her to travel to Washington (DC), England and Sweden to study with some of the world's foremost Fight Directors: Brad Waller, Jonathan Howell, Tim Klotz and Peppe Östensson. She has completed three separate teaching tours of Europe which included Sweden, Norway, Estonia, England, Ireland, Scotland, Finland, Germany and France. Siobhan's approach to teaching stage combat draws parallels to the actor’s process in order to connect fight technique to the characters objectives, obstacles and tactics. From a physical perspective, her classes examine structure and biomechanics to prevent injury, while expanding physical vocabulary. She had been teaching Intimacy extensively across Canada for the 2.5 years before Pandemic, travelling from Vancouver to Halifax to teach this work, in professional and amateur settings, and in educational institutions. She has also shared these techniques across the United States and in Europe. She is the first certified Intimacy Director in Canada (Intimacy Directors International), was the first ACTRA “Intimacy Coordinator” contract and the first Intimacy Coordinator contract at Ubisoft. Her work as a fight director and/or intimacy director has appeared at The Shaw Festival, the National Arts Centre Indigenous Theatre and English Theatre, The Stratford Festival, Native Earth Performing Arts, Tarragon Theatre, Factory Theatre, Soulpepper, Canadian Musical Theatre Projects, The Grand Theatre (London, ON), Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company, Young Peoples’ Theatre, Starvox Entertainment, and Coal Mine Theatre, to name a few. Meanwhile, she continues to perform as an actor/fighter/singer/dancer, most recently Faking It (#canadaperforms, NAC), The Penelopiad (Grand Theatre, London, ON) and A (musical) Midsummer Night’s Dream (Driftwood Theatre). When at home, she and her partner, Matt Richardson, teach stage combat (private lessons, workshops for actors, and workshops in schools). In the 2013-2014 school year, Burning Mountain was on the Ontario Arts Council’s “Artists in Education” roster, a program that subsidizes professional artists in high schools. In 2011, they won the Stage Combat Competition at CombatCon (Las Vegas), and later shot their scene “Trespasser” for film. Always infusing Joyfulness and Curiosity into the work, Siobhan is dedicated to the growth and development of the art forms, the artists and the workplaces. She builds upon current practices, inspired by historical sources, drawing upon a variety of styles and approaches, infused with some science and developing ideas. Her approach to teaching movement arts draws parallels to the actor’s process in order to connect movement technique to the characters objectives, obstacles and tactics. From a physical perspective, her classes examine structure and biomechanics to prevent injury, while expanding physical vocabulary. She endeavors to foster and support a vibrant and healthy artistic community, and to help performers around the world connect more through their bodies to continually grow as storytellers and joyful co-workers. It’s Episode Four – “Rosellen” This is the second of four interviews I was able to conduct during rehearsals – and I was really lucky to be able to chat with Kelli Fox! Kelli is an actor/director with more than 30 years experience on stages across Canada, and in the U.S., including 13 seasons with the Shaw Festival, and 3 seasons with the Stratford Festival. From fall of 2017 to the spring of 2018 she served as Artistic Associate at Globe Theatre in Regina. Kelli has been recognized with a Jessie award (Keely & Du, Arts Club/Canstage), a Dora nomination (Top Girls, Soulpepper), a Capitol Critics Circle award (A Room of One's Own, Shaw tour), a Toronto Critic's Circle award (Penelopiad, Nightwood Theatre), as well as sharing a Dora with the Penelopiad ensemble. Kelli is currently directing Cakewalk at the Blyth Festival Theatre – which opens this Thursday, June 26th! So Happy Opening Week! Our chat was a really cool exploration of what it’s like to work with Judith Thompson, her career as a director and her first fringe show in Vancouver – there may be some singing involved…. It was also her birthday! Have a listen! What I learned about Producing this week: There's a really cool website called Generator - "Generator is a mentoring, teaching, and innovation incubator that expands the skills, tools, and competencies of independent artists, producers and leaders. Bob Logan and Face2Face host David Peck talk about the new play Copenhagen, complementarity, futurism, science for peace, wisdom over knowledge and having lunch with Neils Bohr.Find out more about Copenhagen and purchase tickets here. Synopsis Two tiny particles colliding can cause a nuclear reaction. It is 1941, nations race to perfect The Bomb, and two scientists meet in occupied Denmark for a conversation that will change the course of history. Copenhagen is a story of language, spoken and unspoken, and heard and unheard. An individual speaks to not only connect to another person, but to know where they stand in their relationship to reality; to experiment and test the boundaries of where they end and where the universe begins. In the language of quantum physics, we divide an atom into smaller and smaller pieces to get to its core – the sub-atomic world. Michael Frayn (Noises Off, Democracy) invites us to bear witness to the ultimate ethical impasse. Firecrackers, It’s been a big week for the Toronto theatre community. For those of you that don’t know, Albert Schultz, who was the AD at one of the countries largest theatre companies, Soulpepper, was accused of sexual harassment in the theatre. Four amazingly bold, brave women; Diana Bentley, Patricia Fagan, Kristin Booth, and Hannah Miller came forward with their stories. It’s been an intense, heart breaking time and I have searched with what to say about the whole thing. I decided to leave this note for the Firecracker Department members and not to have a guest this week. Instead, I want to make YOU my guest. Get YOUR voice out there. Send me your emails, voice files, tweets with what advice you would give your younger self, If you want to leave your name and where you’re from you can, but you don’t have to! firecrackerdepartment@gmail.com. I know your words will ring so loud with our community that our hearts will get stirred into action. With love, Naomi
