Darrell Jones from the Herzog Foundation talks about the difference between vouchers and ESAs (Education Savings Account). We also discuss the fact that more parents than ever are considering alternatives to traditional public schools. From The Lion newsletter at ReadLion.com: A new survey shows that more parents than ever are considering alternatives to traditional public schools. A majority of parents in the U.S. reported exploring different school choices for their children last school year. That’s according to the National School Choice Awareness Foundation (NSCAF), which released its annual parent survey in conjunction with National School Choice Week (Jan. 26 - Feb. 1, 2025). How does your state rank in education freedom? In honor of National School Choice Week 2025, one policy group has revealed which states are providing the most education freedom to students. The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has released its 2025 Index of State Education Freedom, providing a detailed analysis of a variety of school choice options in all 50 states. QP: More School Choices Mean Better Opportunities for Oregon Students

This week parents, educators, and students nationwide are celebrating National School Choice Week, an annual event highlighting education options available to K-12 children today. School choice means empowering parents to choose the educational environments that will best help their children succeed. To really improve academic outcomes in Oregon, families must be able to send their children to schools that meet their learning needs. Here are three ways Oregon leaders can expand educational opportunity during the 2025 Legislative Session, now underway in Salem: Raise the cap on virtual charter school enrollment so successful charter schools can serve more students. Currently, school districts may prevent students from enrolling in virtual charter schools if three percent of the district's students are already enrolled in a virtual charter school sponsored by another district. Expand public school transfer policies so students can attend different public schools with open seats. This would help district schools respond to students' needs and reward those that achieve better outcomes. Enact an Education Savings Account (ESA) program so students choosing to opt in can use their state-level, per-pupil education funds where they learn best. 17 states currently have ESA programs. When parents have choices, students have better opportunities to learn, grow, and reach their potential. Oregon education policies should expand students' options, so all children can have an effective, meaningful, and empowering school experience.

QP: Annual Celebration Highlights Importance of Effective Educational Opportunities for All

January 26-February 1 will be the 15th annual National School Choice Week, the world's largest celebration of parental choice and effective education options for all children. National School Choice Week (NSCW) “informs, inspires, and empowers parents to discover the K-12 education options available for their children.” Week organizers say the event will partner with 209 schools and organizations in Oregon to raise awareness of the K-12 education options available to students here, including traditional public, charter, magnet, online, private, and home schools. School choice means empowering parents to choose the educational environments that will best help their children succeed. Thirty-three states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico have expanded students' academic opportunities through 75 school choice programs. More than 22 million students are eligible to participate in a school choice program—about 40% of all students nationwide. When parents have choices, students have more opportunities for their individual learning needs and goals to be met. Oregon should put parents “in the driver's seat” of their children's education through school choice, so all students can have access to an effective, meaningful, and empowering education.

Navy SEAL deployments are often long and grueling, and leaving school-age children behind only adds to the challenge, especially if the children are struggling in school. If a father is “getting ready to go on mission, and there's Timmy failing in second grade, that's all he's going to think about,” says Gretchen McIntosh, the executive director of SEALKIDS. And for the mothers at home with a husband deployed and a child struggling academically, McIntosh says, Mom is often “stressed out” by the task of meeting the needs of a “child at home that has a learning disability.” Out of seeing an immense need for additional educational support for many Navy SEAL families, the organization SEALKIDS was born. “SEALKIDS steps in so that Dad can concentrate on his mission ahead, because we're handling the mission at home,” McIntosh explains. SEALKIDS not only connects families to tutors and other education resources in their area, but also raises funds to help the families pay for those additional resources. SEALKIDS is active in 17 states and is serving 390 kids this year, with a focus on helping children with learning disabilities. McIntosh joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” during National School Choice Week to share the stories of the families the organization has helped and to explain how it hopes to expand its work to serve even more SEAL families. Full text: January 21-27 is National School Choice Week, the world's largest annual celebration of parental choice and effective education options for all children. In 2024, 183 Oregon schools and organizations will participate in National School Choice Week to raise awareness about K-12 education in our state. The landscape of options for Oregon students includes district public schools, public charter schools, private and parochial schools, homeschooling, magnet schools, online learning, and microschools. Different learning environments meet the needs of unique students in the ways they learn best. Empowering parents to choose among all options unlocks the potential of each child. Last year, seventeen states enacted or expanded school choice programs. Approximately 20 million American children—about 36% of students—are now eligible to participate in a private choice program. As part of National School Choice Week, Education Freedom for Oregon and the National School Choice Awareness Foundation will host a school fair at the Salem Convention Center on Saturday, January 20th. This free event will showcase Oregon schools representing a range of education options. Attendees can meet educators and get questions answered to help make informed choices for their families. Our mission is to improve student achievement, teacher quality, and promote parental choice by advocating for, supporting, defending, and collaborating with public charter schools. Our member schools serve approximately 58% of the charter school student population in Florida and run the gamut of choice educational programs – ranging from urban to rural campuses, from programs specializing in exceptional students or drop-off prevention to unique classical curriculum, and college-prep programs in high-need areas. Yet all our member schools have a common thread – a steadfast commitment to raising the bar on public education and providing a quality education option to the children and communities they serve. There are more than 341,900 public charter school students in Florida. If Florida charter schools were a district, it would be the 2nd largest school district in the state. #FloridaCharterSchoolAlliance #FCSA www.flcharteralliance.org

In recent years, school choice has become a growing issue among parents. A 2022 National School Choice Week survey found that more than half of parents were considering a different school for one of their children. In our shifting education landscape, some parents are turning away from public schools, while others remain staunch advocates of public education. But is it really just an either/or discussion? And how can our school systems serve all students, regardless of need and ability? In this episode, Kevin discusses parent involvement in school choice with mother and founder of Empowered Arizona Families, Kayla Svedin.

Full-text: This is National School Choice Week, an annual celebration of opportunity in K-12 education. Students and families need more education options now. School choice means giving parents access to the best options for their children. Critics of school choice programs like Education Savings Accounts claim such programs would harm district public schools by reducing their state funding. However, a new report published by Cascade Policy Institute shows ESAs do not reduce public school funding at the state level or for individual school districts. The report, “Education Savings Accounts: A School Choice Solution That Can Save States Money,” examines the effect an ESA program would have on Oregon's state budget. It finds that a universal program in which all Oregon students would be eligible—similar to Arizona's Empowerment Scholarship Accounts—would require a 3% increase in state spending on K-12 education. And, because many eligible students would not participate in the program, per-student spending for public school students would increase by 2%. Contrary to critics' claims, ESA programs don't “defund” public schools. A carefully constructed program could provide school choice to students, with no noticeable effect on the state budget. Enacting a universal ESA program would be a significant step to help K-12 students get a solid education in the academic settings that are best for them. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/coffeewithcascade/message

Full-text: January 22-28 is National School Choice Week, a celebration of opportunity in K-12 education. Every January, thousands of independent events draw attention to the ways school choice brings quality education to millions of students. Families increasingly believe parents should be able to choose among the schools and resources that best meet their children's academic and developmental needs. Here are three ways Oregon leaders can expand options for students during the legislative session that begins this week: 1. Support Oregon's thriving public charter schools by raising the 3% cap on charter enrollment. Removing the cap would allow successful charters to meet student demand. 2. Expand public school district transfer policies. This would create incentives for schools to respond to families' needs and concerns, and reward public schools that achieve better outcomes. 3. Enact an Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) program like Arizona's. State-level education funding is allocated per child and paid directly to district schools, regardless of student outcomes or parent satisfaction. A portion of this funding should be converted to portable accounts for students to use where they learn best. Thirty-two states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico already have student-centric educational choice programs. Oregon should join them, so families can match their children's needs and goals with the educational environments that will serve them well. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/coffeewithcascade/message

Courtney Stevens is today's guest. Courtney is a first-year student at Front Range Community College: Larimer Campus in Fort Collins, Colorado. She also did concurrent enrollment at the college while she was in high school. Courtney began taking online classes as a high school senior as a result of the pandemic and found that she liked them as much as she enjoyed her in-person courses. She now takes classes online as well as in-person. At first, the less structured schedule of online schooling felt challenging, but within a month Courtney adjusted. She also experienced more reading and writing in online classes due to the different structure, but found she adapted to this quickly, as well. Not only did she feel much more safe taking class online during the pandemic, but she also realized it was a great way to learn. Classmates who remained in the traditional school were curious about the flexible schedule that enabled Courtney to take morning Tae Kwon Do classes and do Crossfit in the afternoon. She explained that online learning gave her control over her schedule, and she found this to be an important benefit. When asked about some of the skills she developed most after transitioning to online learning, Courtney says, “I feel like I really cultivated my reading and writing skills... Even just looking at the stuff I wrote during my junior year compared to now, my writing has improved significantly.” Future of School: The Podcast is hosted by Amy Valentine, CEO and Education Evangelist for Future of School. When students speak, the education world must stop and listen. Welcome to the “Students Speak” series on Future of School: The Podcast, presented in partnership with National School Choice Week. Oam Patel is today's guest. Oam is a graduate of Mountain Home High School in Mountain Home, Idaho, a small rural town, and a first-year student at Harvard University. In ninth grade, he spoke with a cousin in Houston and learned about the variety of courses that were available in his cousin's school. From this, Oam realized that online courses could provide access to numerous subjects even if they weren't offered at his small school. He began to take some courses that summer which were supported by the Idaho Digital Learning Academy, the state-sponsored online school serving the entire state of Idaho. From there, Oam continued to use online learning to augment his in-person courses. He accessed some history and computer science courses that weren't available in his school and learned a lot more about his interests (he determined he's not a history buff, but was encouraged to take some computer science classes in college). Reflecting on what would be different if he'd never learned about online options, he says, “I think I'd be a little more closed-minded in my academics. I wouldn't know about certain subjects that I really enjoy now. I wouldn't have explored opportunities that I'm very glad I've taken.” Future of School: The Podcast is hosted by Amy Valentine, CEO and Education Evangelist for Future of School.
