Today we have Jan. She is 75 years old from Winchester, VA and took her last drink on February 1st, 2021. This episode is brought to you by: Sign up and get 10% off: Better Help Café RE – THE social app for sober people Recovery Elevator is compiling a list of recovery stories and we're going to put them in a book called This is How We Quit. If you want to be part of this book, and submit your story, we'd love to have you. There is no sobriety time requirement so if your saying to yourself, well, I've only been sober 30 days, I can't submit my story, then nonsense. Send an email to info@recoveryelevator.com and you'll get a google form to fill out and submit your story. **TRIGGER WARNING** this episode references firearms and sexual assault [02:48] Thoughts from Paul: A common phrase in the recovery space is "protect your energy". Paul feels it is a solid idea and tries to practice it as well. His goal in life had always been to bring people together and it has been a major pain point for him to see the current administration purposely trying to separate or divide Americans. Paul tries to focus on what he can control and turn everything else – especially the news. He shares a story about a recent visit to his parents' house where the news was on and he couldn't find the remote to turn it off. Paull mentions all of this to remind us of what RE stands for, which is community, connection, inclusivity and love. Many of the things going on in our country go completely against our mission so we have to protect our energy and turn that stuff off, and you should too. [07:49] Paul introduces Jan: Jan currently lives in Winchester, VA, she is divorced, has one adult son named Sam and a 14-year-old Pekingese. For fun Jan enjoys walking, hiking, being outside and dancing. Jan started drinking when she was 19 and attending school in Europe. She reflects that she spent time with the wildest group where they did a lot of drugs and drank. When she returned to the US, she attended the University of Arizona and did a lot of traveling back in forth to Mexico and eventually ended up in Puerto Vallarta. Jan says she always gravitated to the people she shouldn't have. Bad things began happening to Jan due to her drug and alcohol use. She found herself in a lot of scary situations that eventually led to her depression and desire to move back to the US. Jan began to attend AA and was able to maintain four years of sobriety about fifteen years ago but started drinking again. There was no rock-bottom moment leading up Jan's quit date in 2021, but she was tired of the mental obsession with alcohol. She tried naltrexone and The Sinclair Method, Antabuse and discovered Café RE after a friend of her son suggested it. She quit drinking right around the same time she joined. Over the years prior to quitting drinking, Jan had been misdiagnosed with different mental health disorders. Since she has quit, she no longer needs the meds they believed she did. Jan says she sees things more clearly and enjoys photography now. Her love of nature has increased. The connection piece in recovery has also been very important to Jan, and she enjoys hosting some of the chats within Café RE. She stresses that we can't do this alone and having community is vital to recovery. One of Jan's favorite recovery quotes is that it's a lot easier to stay sober than to get sober. Some of her advice for those new in recovery is to get involved with community, listen to podcasts, read quit lit and attend meetups. Recovery Elevator Go big because eventually we'll all go home. Love thy neighbor. I love you guys. RE Instagram Sobriety Tracker iTunes RE YouTube

This week on The Education Gadfly Show, we're marking National School Choice Week with a conversation with Shelby Doyle of the National School Choice Awareness Foundation. We talk about why the movement emphasizes school choice rather than educational choice—and whether the growing focus on education savings accounts is a good development for the movement. Then, on the Research Minute, Amber Northern breaks down new evidence on how disability identification varies by student family income, raising important questions about equity, access to services, and how schools classify and support students.Recommended content: National School Choice Week 2026 — National School Choice Awareness FoundationEducation savings accounts: Boffo or bonkers? | Episode 1002 of The Education Gadfly ShowEducational choice is giving new hope to Catholic schools —Mike McShane for the Thomas B. Die «Stubete» hat bei «Potzmusig» Tradition.

In his most recent books The Master and His Emissary (2009) and The Matter with Things (2021), psychiatrist and neuroscientist Ian McGilchrist has explored the meaning of the asymmetry between the right and left hemispheres of the brain. His thesis is that we are in a period in history where the West has become obsessed with the reductionistic, decontextualised, algorithmic thinking of the left brain, whilst devaluing the holistic, integrated and lived experience of the right brain. I will be exploring the implications of McGilchrist's thesis for Christian faith and asking whether his ideas might help us understand why many Christians today feel their faith lacks a living experience of God.Please note that the ideas expressed in this lecture do not necessarily represent the views of L'Abri Fellowship. For more resources, visit the L'Abri Ideas Library at labriideaslibrary.org. A major commercial real estate company is buying up buildings in downtown Denver and wants to convert the empty offices into housing, but the mysterious landowner is standing in the way. Then, RTD has committed almost $1 million to pilot a shuttle service to Red Rocks, but it won't be serving concert goers. Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi are talking about these big stories on development and transit, plus a listener question about Clerk and Recorder Paul López's delinquent property tax payments.

In this episode, we sit down with Paul L'Estrange, former CTO of Mars and PVH Corp, to explore the critical role IT plays in large-scale transformation—and what it takes for Catalyst leaders to drive change while keeping the core business performing. Paul shares powerful insights on the importance of having great #2s and team members who can bring the organization along on the journey, ensuring that transformation isn't just visionary but executable. We dive deep into listening as a strategic advantage, particularly paying attention to those who can help manage risk across the change spectrum. Paul also highlights a key leadership challenge: engaging and inspiring those who "keep the lights on" rather than chase the next big innovation. His solution? Spotlighting their work and showing their impact to the broader organization. When it comes to thriving as a Catalyst executive, Paul shares four essential lessons:1️) Put yourself in luck's path—seek opportunities where your Catalyst skills can drive meaningful change rather than waiting for the perfect role.2️) Know when to move on—if the organization isn't ready for the transformation you envision, don't stay too long.3️) Don't get caught up in process—even in IT, focus on who you're benefiting, and the "how" will follow.4️) Find mentors who guide, not dictate—seek those who will help you identify what needs to be done but give you space to find your own best approach. This conversation is packed with wisdom for any Catalyst leading transformation in complex organizations. Tune in to hear Paul's firsthand experience and practical strategies for making bold change happen—without breaking what already works.Original music by Lynz Floren.
Private Affluence and Public Squalor: Social Injustice and Economic Misery in America Paul L Nevins Privateaffluenceandpublicsqualor.com Amazon.com Are the values that Americans collectively hold destroying the American Dream? The answer to that question depends upon the answers to some very specific questions. What do we as citizens of the United States believe we owe to one another as citizens? What is the purpose of government? What is of the role of the private enterprise? What is the meaning of equal opportunity? To what extent should purely economic concerns be regulated in the public interest? The answers to these questions reveal our values and define the role that each of us chooses to play as a participant in our country's political and economic affairs. As the role of government in the economic life of the nation has become increasingly diminished, the effort to create a market economy that is unfettered by public oversight and regulation has emerged triumphant—to the detriment of the values that we should share as citizens.

Send us a textIn this episode, I speak with sci-fi writer, editor, and publisher Jean-Paul L. Garnier, who shares his journey from avid reader to the owner of Space Cowboy Books, a thriving indie bookstore and publishing house in Joshua Tree, California. He reveals how science fiction offers writers complete creative freedom to explore human psychology through fantastical settings.More than just a desert bookstore, Space Cowboy Books represents a multifaceted literary ecosystem. Starting in 2016 as a modest shed, it quickly expanded into a proper storefront near Joshua Tree National Park – where the stunning landscape and dark skies provide constant inspiration. The store's "free books for kids" program showcases Garnier's commitment to childhood literacy, eventually growing into partnerships with local nonprofits to build school libraries. Whether you're a science fiction enthusiast, aspiring writer, independent bookshop lover, or simply curious about literary entrepreneurship, this episode offers a fascinating glimpse into how one passionate reader created a thriving literary hub in the California desert. How we think of nature is vitally important for shaping our relationship with the natural world.
