Andrew Henry LPC and Paul Krauss MA LPC recently met to talk about Andrew's new book "Heartwork"which is not available on Apple Books. From Andrew: Heartwork is a journey within to tap into vital resources for today! I want to thank Paul for narrating this section for me, I suffer from ALS which effects my vocal cords and makes it difficult for me to talk for long periods of time. Thank you Paul for helping me get the word out about my new book: Heartwork. Many counselors treat depression and anxiety by attempting to locate the root cause and process those feelings. While there is nothing per say wrong with this approach, I submit there is a kinder and self-validating way to calm the worry mind, while boosting the higher reasoning. My book demonstrates six case studies which use my Heartwork technique from many different walks of life over the last 1.5 to 2 years. Heartwork is currently available on Apple Books. Paul Krauss MA LPC speaks with John Bateson about his new book: Suicide: Understanding and Ending a National Tragedy which provides essential information about the current landscape surrounding suicide - debunking common myths, sharing demographic data, and identifying risk factors and warning signs. More than 49,000 people in the United States died by suicide in 2022 — that's one death every 11 minutes, and more than any other year dating to back at least 1941, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. John Bateson has pragmatic suggestions for multiple segments of society regarding how we as a society can reduce the number of suicides in the United States. John Bateson was executive director of a nationally certified crisis intervention and suicide prevention center for 16 years. He also was executive director of three university counseling centers and deputy director of a multicounty social service agency. He served on the steering committee of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (now the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) and was appointed to a blue-ribbon committee that created the "California Strategic Plan on Suicide Prevention." He is the author of The Education of a Coroner, The Last and Greatest Battle, The Final Leap, and Building Hope. Dr. Alice Feller, MD speaks with Paul Krauss MA LPC about her experiences working as a psychiatrist both within the public mental health system and private practice. Dr. Feller discusses the barriers inside the current system that are diminishing care to helping those who are most afflicted by mental health concerns. Dr. Feller tells stories of those she has worked to help and how some healthcare policies, current laws, and ignorance of mental health conditions negatively affect those seeking care of severe mental illnesses such as Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia. Dr. Feller and Paul discuss the correlations between homelessness and those suffering from mental illnesses. According to Dr. Feller, author of American Madness: Fighting for Patients In a Broken Mental Health System, the deinstitutionalization movement (especially the obscure "16-bed law" regarding public federal healthcare funding) caused many of the homelessness issues we see today, and that mental illness and addiction don't necessarily cause homelessness — but that homelessness often triggers or exacerbates mental illness and addiction. What's more, most treatment for serious mental illness and addiction is doled out in American prisons, an issue which criminalizing homelessness would only worsen. When it comes to experiencing a traumatic event, overcoming its rippling effects can feel overwhelming—like there's no end in sight. EMDR is here to change that. This week, I'm joined by Ginger Poag, a clinical psychotherapist and trauma counselor specializing in EMDR therapy. We sat down to discuss how EMDR works, the effects this modality has on the brain, and why those with anxiety, trauma, and PTSD may benefit the most from it. In this episode, you'll discover: What Is EMDR: An acronym for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, EMDR therapy "allows us to get into the limbic system of the brain where traumas are stored,” shares Poag. "So we're able to access it there, desensitize it, and then move it to a different part of the brain where the brain can now realize, okay, that happened in the past. It's no longer an active threat." How EMDR Works: EMDR helps you reprocess traumatic events through bilateral movements using eye movements, hand tappers, or sound. This is important because "on a subconscious level, what we do today is being affected by the trauma still stored and unprocessed," says Poag. Introducing a positive belief ("I can overcome anything") can also be done during your session. EMDR vs Talk Therapy: While talk therapy is always an option, Poag says it can feel limiting to someone with a history of trauma. "I feel like there's a form of narrative therapy where you keep telling your story over and over again, and it can be more traumatizing to the client," she shares, adding, "What I like about EMDR so much is that I don't need to know every little detail. All of the work is happening in your brain." Ketamine Can Help Access Emotions: Reserved for people who are having a hard time accessing certain memories or those hitting a plateau, using a small dose of ketamine—administered by a clinician—can prove helpful during EMDR sessions. "It's been so effective, and we're able to process through so much at an even quicker rate with the ketamine," says Poag. 02:17 Understanding Trauma and EMDR 04:08 Types of Trauma and Their Impact 09:50 Mechanisms Behind EMDR 11:35 EMDR in Practice: Methods and Effectiveness 13:02 Personal Testimony: Overcoming PTSD 20:00 Comparing EMDR with Traditional Talk Therapy 25:06 EMDR for Couples and Recent Traumatic Events 26:21 Exploring Ketamine in EMDR Therapy 28:43 EMDR Session Timelines and Effectiveness 34:26 EMDR for Children and Young Patients 42:08 Intensive EMDR Sessions and Retreats Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Episode mentioned with Dr. Ann Shippy (The Devastating Effects of Toxic Mold Exposure) Connect with Ginger Poag: Website: https://www.columbiaemdr.com/ To find an EMDR practitioner - Emdria website: https://www.emdria.org/find-an-emdr-therapist/ EMDR Therapy Intensives: https://www.columbiaemdr.com/emdr-therapy-intensives EMDR Intensive Retreat Costa Rica: https://www.columbiaemdr.com/costarica

Nikki dives into the importance of creating both types of offers and shares which group to focus on first. They discuss the importance of getting feedback through surveys and other methods, which often lead to surprising results. Nikki shares real-life examples of client feedback that actually changed her messaging and marketing. They cover tactics like giving clients a menu and offering incentives. Melissa explores methods that she's thinking about trying, and Nikki gives her expert feedback and tips on how to proceed. If you're ready to improve sales by giving clients exactly what they want, this episode is for you! In This Episode: [01:12] - Melissa shares a little bit about herself and her business. [02:02] - The mission at Guided Wellness is based on understanding that secrets make us sick and shame is passed from generation to generation. [03:23] - Melissa and her clinicians are licensed in the state of Utah, so they work with women in Utah. [04:13] - A woman should seek support as soon as she realizes that an issue is affecting her quality of life. [05:30] - Feeling seen and heard by your therapist are the biggest predictors of the outcome of your therapy. [07:13] - Melissa also offers courses for other counselors. She is a consultant for EMDR which helps release trauma stored in the nervous system. [08:12] - Melissa's practice is a patient pay or cash pay practice. She gets clients but many of them don't attend weekly sessions. [09:48] - She wants advice about what type of offer she should create for people who can't attend weekly and for those who do attend weekly. [10:41] - Nikki's advice is creating offers for both scenarios but focusing on the high ticket offer first. [11:16] - She could also do a survey or create an offer, see if there's interest, and then create the back end. Nikki also suggests asking the audience what type of high ticket program they think would be useful. [12:14] - Nikki shares the technique of giving a menu to assist audience members in giving feedback. [13:11] - Nikki also suggests testing some of the high-end clients to find additional ways to serve them. [14:46] - Showing clients the value that you create for them will encourage more people to sign up for the weekly sessions. [18:18] - Therapy is similar to going to the gym. If you only attend once a month you're not going to see progress. [19:38] - Giving clients an opportunity to be exposed to the benefits could result in a higher sell through rate. [21:02] - Melissa talks about doing a survey through her email list. She's also considering asking clients their opinions or to complete a worksheet when they're in session. [22:02] - Nikki also suggests offering an incentive to get client feedback. [23:03] - Nikki offered an incentive of $500 Amazon gift cards and received valuable and surprising feedback about her offers and her menu. She changed her messaging and her marketing based on this feedback. [24:54] - When doing a survey do everything possible to get the best results including offering a menu. [26:05] - Melissa's thinking about offering a self-esteem workbook to anyone who completes the survey and making all responses anonymous. [26:34] - People sometimes become more invested when you ask for feedback. [29:14] - Nikki talks about having integrity in messaging and not making people feel like you're just trying to sell to them. [31:23] - Melissa has learned in messaging potential clients to share what they will receive, not what she will teach. For more actionable sales tips, download the FREE Closing The Sale Ebook. Patricia Roos, Retired Professor Emerita of Sociology at Rutgers University speaks with Paul Krauss MA LPC about her personal story of losing her son to addiction as well as the systemic failures that contributed to his death. Pat and Paul take a deep dive into the sociological issues, mental health and addiction stigmas, the criminal justice system's approach to addiction, and many addiction treatment centers that are not in-line with what the latest research is reporting works with people experiencing substance use addiction. On the Practice of Therapy Podcast, Rachel Harrison recounts the organic and somewhat accidental evolution of her practice, emphasizing the importance of hiring the right staff and fostering a supportive team. Initially lacking a grand plan, Rachel's practice grew through serendipitous opportunities and learning from other group practice owners. Her trauma-focused practice aims to provide a comfortable, non-clinical environment and has expanded across Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. Rachel underscores the need for hiring clinicians who align with her practice's culture, advocating for an "abundance mentality" where practices support each other. Reflecting on her decision to specialize in trauma, she highlights the benefits of having a niche, which has helped attract the right clients and therapists. Rachel has also founded the Trauma Specialist Training Institute and ventured into podcasting exploring innovative approaches to mental health. Transitioning from therapist to business owner, she acknowledges the new skills required for running a business and the ongoing evolution in the mental health field. Meet Rachel Harrison: Rachel is a trainer and speaker providing education on trauma treatment, EMDR and Entrepreneurship. She is also the Founder of Trauma Specialists of Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania. She is a Certified EMDR Therapist and an Approved Consultant for EMDR Therapy, as well as a trainer, offering EMDRIA approved EMDR trainings nationally. She brings 26 years' experience as a therapist and is the owner of The Trauma Specialists Training Institute. Dr. Connie McReynolds, PhD has caused quite the stir in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, and counseling as she has approached the ADHD and ADD diagnoses much differently than most practitioners. Rather than debating the nuances of "does someone HAVE ADHD or not", Dr. Connie has researched and utilized sophisticated Neurofeedback Assessments that differentiate multiple different issues that could be contributing to the largest gestalt (or diagnosis of ADHD): Including multiple tiers of auditory processing disorders, visual processing disorders, general learning disorders, differential medical diagnoses, environmental factors, and overlapping clinical psychological diagnoses. If this sounds intriguing, this is an episode you need to hear and she has written a book that I would recommend reading. Dr. Connie McReynolds, PhD and her team have fearlessly pushed forward into researching the nuances of all types of people tagged with the label "ADHD/ ADD." In going deeper, with their neuropsychological assessments and sophisticated proprietary and targeted neurofeedback treatments, they have discovered that there are a myriad of issues that are contributing to what your average clinician may conclude is ADHD (referencing the DSM or ICD codes). Not only have they been able to figure out the etiology of the symptoms that are contributing to the clinical picture / diagnosis--they have worked on treating these symptoms WITHOUT medications or minimal medications, and also with minimal therapy (unless called for from a crossover of other behavioral, environmental, or psychological factors). Dr. Connie McReynolds' team have had incredible results from only 20 thirty minute targeted neurofeedback subjects who are coming in with a range of ADHD-related symptoms. And 6 and 12 month follow up assessments and subjective reports are just as stunning! However, the idea that you can actually reduce ADHD symptoms for the long-term without extensive medications and behavioral therapies goes against the status quo of most practitioners in the United States. Thus, this has not yet been popularized. It also doesn't cost that much money and the treatment is not life-long, so thus it has not yet been picked up by the typical profiteers. The best news is that the data speaks for itself. From multiple published articles to the examples in Dr. Connie McReynold's book, there is hope for those that suffer from ADHD, auditory processing issues, visual processing disorders, and related issues. A guest on CBS, NBC, and NPR, I recommend checking out her website for a free assessment. Dr. Connie McReynolds is a Licensed Psychologist & Certified Rehabilitation Counselor with more than 30 years of experience in the field of rehabilitation counseling and psychology. She is the founder of neurofeedback clinics in southern California working with children and adults to reduce or eliminate conditions of ADHD, anxiety, anger, depression, chronic pain, learning problems, and trauma. A seasoned and inspiring speaker, and author of the award winning and Amazon #1 best-selling book in eight categories, Solving the ADHD Riddle, Dr. Connie's whole-hearted mission is to bring hope and resolution to those who are struggling with the symptoms of ADHD, their parents, and teachers. She earned her Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison gaining valuable experiences in the Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment Program at the Middleton VA Hospital, at the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Neuropsychological Clinic at Meriter Hospital, and the Mendota Mental Health Institute. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and in honor of my advocacy for more open conversation surrounding Mental health, I will be featuring episodes on ways to take care of our mental health so we can better care for ourselves and our children. Therapy is highly beneficial, and various modalities are used. EMDR (Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is an evidence-based approach that has been shown to help in processing traumatic events and changing negative patterns and helping people with mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, and OCD. I personally started EMDR earlier this year, and in honor of Maternal Mental Health Month, I invited Dr. Cassidy Freitas, who is a licensed marriage and family therapist who also does EMDR. We discuss: What EMDR is and the steps of EMDR Who would be a good candidate Examples of how EMDR helped me and Dr. Cassidy For more resources on EMDR: EMDR Institute, Psychologytoday.com, and EMDRIA. Dr. Melanie Joy, PhD speaks with Paul Krauss MA LPC about her new book How to End Injustice Everywhere: Understanding the Common Denominator Driving All Injustices. Melanie's How to End Injustice Everywhere shows the underlying denominator driving all types of injustice and provides an assessment of unjust structures and behaviors, as well as practical techniques to help increase awareness, eliminate infighting, and develop more resilient and successful justice movements. She explains that all injustices, including racism, patriarchy, animal exploitation, environmental degradation, and domestic abuse, have one common denominator: relational dysfunction, or dysfunctional ways of relating to other people, social groups, nonhuman animals, and the environment. This is an interesting discussion that discusses something so simple, yet so difficult to change: human relationships and the way that systems function relationally. Also discussed: Relational dysfunction, forms of injustice, different mentalities, toxic communication, non-relational mentality, how are we being socialized, changing our thinking, reduce infighting, produce more equitable social justice movements, producing healthier systems, polyvagal theory, integrity, dignity, morale values, practices, compassion, caring, justice, the golden rule, humanistic perspectives, etc. Dr. Melanie Joy is an award-winning psychologist specializing in the psychology of oppression. A longtime advocate for justice, she was a lecturer at the University of Massachusetts for 11 years, has written seven books, and is a recipient of the Ahimsa Award—previously given to the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela—for her work on global nonviolence. She's also the founding president of the international NGO Beyond Carnism. Melanie's work is a call for anyone working toward justice for humans, animals, or the environment to unify behind a shared “metamission” of creating a more relational world. Her book provides an empowering and unique approach to ending injustice, and it offers not only an examination of non relational systems and behaviors, but also practical tools to help raise awareness, reduce infighting, and build more resilient and impactful justice movements. Barbara Lane speaks with Paul Krauss MA LPC about her extraordinary true story of living in the foster care system, suffering abuse, healing, and reuniting with her sisters after 43 years of separation. At three, orphan life with my sisters wasn't bad--it was basically all I knew. Love filled the void left by our parents. But our separation shattered that love and we were lost in the system and separated for most of our lives. The pain lingered for 43 years until a miraculous discovery and reunion occurred. "Broken Water" tells my story - surviving foster care abuse while searching for my sisters. It's a journey of reunion, shared histories of hardship, and a testament to resilience, sisterhood, and faith. In her writing, Rev. Barbara Lane incorporates her experiences as a foster kid, educator, ministerial counselor, speaker, entrepreneur, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and author. Barbara de-stigmatizes the fate of child abuse survivors by sharing her own story, which inspired her to create "Broken Water." In addition to her 25 years of experience working as a ministerial counselor in private practice, Barbara is inspired to share her knowledge of related topics by her education in human development, social sciences, and family psychology with a focus on child abuse. These topics include the family, family separation, the foster care system, attachment and bonding, child maltreatment, relationship formation, the human spirit's resiliency, healing from trauma, and the strength that comes from believing in a force bigger than oneself.
