In Episode 167 of The Intentional Clinician podcast, Paul Krauss MA LPC interviews child psychiatrist Dr. Frank Putnam, MD about his groundbreaking assertion that prevention of child maltreatment is the single most powerful way to improve the mental and physical health of our nation. The conversation likely explores Dr. Putnam's decades of research through the Female Growth and Development Study (FGDS), which has followed sexual abuse survivors for over 35 years and revealed that childhood sexual abuse causes accelerated biological aging, increasing the risk for early onset of physical and mental conditions usually associated with late life. Drawing from his new book *Old Before Their Time*, Dr. Putnam discusses how childhood maltreatment is the largest preventable cause of certain major mental illnesses, interpersonal violence, and much hard drug abuse, while addressing the wide-ranging mental, physical, and social consequences that extend across generations. Dr. Frank W. Putnam, MD, is a professor of clinical psychiatry at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and an emeritus professor of pediatrics and child psychiatry at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. He co-founded the pioneering Female Growth and Development Study (FGDS) in 1987 with the late Dr. Penelope K. Trickett, a longitudinal study that has followed female incest victims and comparison groups across three generations for over 35 years. His latest book, Old Before Their Time: A Scientific Life Investigating How Maltreatment Harms Children and the Adults They Become is part memoir and part call to action that provides an inside look at his distinguished career documenting the long-term consequences of childhood maltreatment. Growth rarely happens by accident because it's built through intention, care, and a willingness to evolve. In this episode of my mini-series "Where Are They Now?", Amber Sperling reflects on the journey of expanding her practice from a single basement setup to a thriving, multi-location space rooted in accessibility and community care. Amber and I first spoke on the podcast in 2023! To get the full experience of the there-and-now conversation, you can click here to listen to the episode when Amber first came on the Fearless Practice Podcast. In our conversation in this episode, she shares how prioritizing clients over waitlists, investing in genuine relationships, and leaning into what works have shaped her success, along with the practical lessons and marketing strategies that continue to guide her forward. Welcome to the conversation! MEET AMBER Amber Sperling is a Registered Social Worker, psychotherapist, and founder of Amber Sperling Social Work & Psychotherapy Services, a growing group practice specializing in perinatal mental health and trauma. She is EMDRIA-certified and one of the first clinicians in Canada to hold certification in perinatal mental health, known for helping clients experience meaningful change from the very first session. Amber is expanding her work through MARSHA Care—a broader model that integrates therapy, education, and community to support women's health across life transitions. She is passionate about building a practice that blends clinical excellence with connection and sustainable growth, so more mothers can access the support they need. Learn more about Amber on her private practice website, LinkedIn, and Psychology Today profiles. In this episode: How Amber's practice has grown from 2023 to 2026 What has changed How Amber's practice goes the extra mile in client care Amber's top 3 marketing tips Amber's lessons learned advice to listeners How Amber's practice has grown from 2023 to 2026 Over the last couple of years, Amber's practice has grown. During her first interview with the Fearless Practice Podcast, she was operating from her basement in her old house. However, now the practice has its own dedicated space! What has changed Amber credits her team and practice's drive to meet the needs of their community as the spark that pushed them to continue growing and building up the business. As Amber explains, for her team, having some flexibility and availability is important so that every client that comes into the practice can get seen to in a matter of days. It bothered Amber to keep clients on a waiting list, and that drive is what contributed to her growing her practice to meet more of the community's needs. How Amber's practice goes the extra mile in client care Amber deeply cares about her client niche because she also knows what it feels like to be sitting in the opposite chair. As such, she and her team have made it a priority to care not just for the client's mental well-being, but also for the little things, through things like: Keeping snacks on hand for the moms and toddlers Making the building accessible for every type of ability or need Offering free parking for clients Offering both in-person and virtual options for sessions Amber's top 3 marketing tips For Amber, networking has been the top marketing strategy, consistently growing her practice the most. Even when she felt nervous or unsure, connecting with other mental health practitioners and practice owners has consistently created more and more referral sources, which have sustained her business and helped it expand. Secondly, Amber recommends utilizing social media. While it isn't for everyone, if it does work for you and allows you to market your practice creatively, use it. Make videos, use your voice, share professional photos or information; anything that can help build consistent traction and help place your practice in front of more people. Be authentic, because that resonates the most with your ideal clients. And lastly, lean into what you enjoy doing, and do more of it. This could be networking, social media, or even public speaking, hosting community events, or anything that allows more people to interact positively with you, your staff, and your practice. Don't overthink it, and just do it! Amber's lessons learned and advice to listeners Over these three years, Amber credits the power of goal-setting and pursuing. Keep yourself focused on these goals, because there will be so many shiny objects in your periphery, so be specific about where you are going and what needs to be done to bring these dreams to fruition one at a time. And, keep doing the things that work! Sure, try a bunch of new techniques, but once you start receiving feedback on what works and what doesn't, pick what does and scale it. An essential guide to healing from oppression-based trauma, for everyone left outside of mainstream conversations There are many books on trauma healing that can change people's lives. Yet when queer and trans people, people of color, and all of us living at the margins look for books that reflect our own experiences and that specifically name the oppression we experience as trauma, we're left empty-handed. There's little that speaks to the specific traumas we experience: homophobia, transphobia, institutional injustices, isolation, medical trauma, and discrimination at every turn. We deserve to have ourselves reflected and considered in the world of trauma recovery. In Healing the Oppressed Body: A Therapeutic Guide for Radical Self-Liberation (Penguin, 2026), somatic therapist Andrea Gutiérrez-Glik provides the best tools and approaches to healing trauma and filters them through an anti-oppression lens, making sure they're uniquely impactful for all of us at the margins. In these pages, you'll learn how trauma is stored and processed by our minds and bodies and how we can work with our amazingly flexible brains and nervous systems to create pathways to healing. You'll understand just how and why trauma that occurs in our earliest days can affect us throughout our lives. You'll learn to embrace your Internal Family, making yourself whole. In Healing the Oppressed Body, Andrea Gutiérrez-Glik lovingly offers us the best, most radical solutions to tap into our sources of healing. Along the way, you'll discover tools and techniques for emotional regulation and therapeutic modalities to heal from oppression-based trauma. Whether inside the therapy room or on your own, in the pages of Healing the Oppressed Body, you'll learn how to heal through growing compassion for all parts of yourself and others, finding community support and love, and celebrating the freedom to be your true self.Andrea Gutiérrez-Glik, LCSW, is a psychotherapist specializing in treating OCD, cPTSD, and PTSD, prioritizing women, survivors, and queer and trans folks. Paul Krauss MA LPC interviews wellness coach, ecotherapy guide, and author Carrie Asby explore how simple, intentional practices in nature can regulate the nervous system, soften perfectionism, and restore a sense of belonging in everyday life. Drawing from her personal story of burnout and "rock bottom," Carrie describes how yoga, breathwork, and nature-based rituals-like mindful walking outdoors, forest bathing, and sensory awareness practices-helped her move from chronic overwhelm into a steadier, more embodied way of living, and now form the foundation of the coaching work she offers to clients seeking resilience and reconnection. Paul invites Carrie to translate these experiences into concrete tools for listeners, emphasizing how accessible daily rituals such as conscious breathing in fresh air, feeling the elements on the skin, and bringing mindful attention to the land can function as practical ecotherapy-even for those in urban settings. A yoga teacher, nature-healing guide, and founder of Carrie Asby Wellness, Carrie supports individuals and groups through retreats, coaching, and writing that weave together somatic awareness, mindfulness, and nature-based ritual, helping people realign with their values, reduce burnout, and remember their deep connection to the living world. In this episode of the Intentional Clinician Podcast, Paul Krauss, MA, LPC interviews Robert C. Smith, MD, about his book "Has Medicine Lost Its Mind? Why Our Mental Health System Is Failing Us and What Should Be Done to Cure It," in which Dr. Smith argues that the U.S. mental health crisis stems from the way mainstream medicine (especially primary care doctors) are trained–where most are lacking the depth of education surrounding mental health. And further, that mainstream medicine is mainly organized around a rigid mind-body split that neglects the environmental, social, and emotional dimensions of health and illnesses. Drawing on both research and decades of clinical experience, Dr. Robert Smith explains that mental disorders are now the most common health condition physicians see, surpassing heart disease and cancer, yet roughly three‑quarters of people with mental illness receive no care or inadequate treatment. Paul Krauss and Robert Smith, MD discuss how primary care and other non‑psychiatric physicians now provide the majority of mental health care (over 70-75%), even though they typically receive only about 2-5% of their training in behavioral health and psychiatry, leading to misdiagnosis, one-size-fits-all interventions, under‑treatment, and an over-reliance on purely pharmaceutical and biomedical interventions that fail to treat the whole person, or emphasize prevention through activities that promote emotional health and well-being or even referrals to competent psychotherapists to compliment treatment. Robert Smith, MD, MACP, is a general internist and University Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry Emeritus at Michigan State University, where he has focused since 1985 on teaching and research in patient‑centered communication and primary care mental health. He and his colleagues defined the patient‑centered interview in concrete behavioral terms, validated it in randomized controlled trials, and authored the widely used textbook "Smith's Patient‑Centered Interviewing: An Evidence‑Based Method," now in its fourth edition and translated into multiple languages. A Master of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Smith has been widely featured in national media for his work on improving the doctor-patient relationship, chronic pain care, and mental health treatment in medical settings, and he continues to write and lecture internationally on the biopsychosocial model of care. This special episode was recorded in front of a live audience. Heather and David Polidi host an incredible group of contributors to IFS Informed EMDR: Creative and Collaborative Approaches. We explored the foundational sections of the book. In this gathering we expressed our thoughts on healing, and how it is not a technique. Instead, it begins with awareness and with a relationship. Each contributor reflected on their chapter, and what stood out for them. In the introduction, David hoped to convey how everyone can healing their trauma wounds, no matter how much suffering someone carries. There is an inner wisdom that knows how to move toward healing when the right relational space is created. Our role as therapists is to help create that space. Zandra Bamford shared how impacted she has been through by IFS and its non-pathologizing nature. Particularly, Zandra felt it was a very gentle model to understand protectors. Then, we discussed the foundations of combining the two models in a unified way. Integration becomes a way of holding multiple perspectives at once. A key shift that emerges in IFS informed EMDR is focusing on "parts" as the true focus of healing, rather than memory networks. "Parts" hold pain, parts and organize around protection. As we deepen relationships with these parts, we can offer EMDR, and bilateral stimulation, to unburden these parts. Annabel McGoldrick emphasized how IFS invites us to stay aware of our own parts, our assumptions, and our internal responses as we sit with another. This awareness becomes part of the healing field itself. Bruce Hersey articulated the Syzygy model, which integrates EMDR, IFS, and Coherence Therapy. Bruce shared that instead of calling this work "parts work" he understands it as "Self work." Recognizing the importance of Self in the system, opens up a new way to appreciate necessary elements of dual awareness. Michelle Richardson expanded Syzygy's “Discovery” phase, and how valuable this is when working with highly protective systems. Peggy Kolodny's shared how the integration of art, somatics, and Jungian active imagination, can also add so much to these trauma healing models. What emerges is not just a model, but a way of being. A way of practicing therapy that is slower, more relational, and deeply respectful of the complexity of the human system. They explore how culture, ancestry, and trauma live in the nervous system, how the body can become a "cultural home," and how movement, sensation, and body-based awareness help people who navigate multiple cultural worlds reclaim agency and coherence in their sense of self. Throughout the discussion, Marcia weaves her personal story and clinical lens with reflections on social justice, intergenerational trauma, and the role of contemplative, somatic practice in healing within and across communities. Marcia Bonato Warren, MA, MA LPC (she/her) is a trauma-informed Somatic Counselor/Body Psychotherapist, interculturalist, and author with more than 30 years of cross-cultural experience spanning somatic counseling and education, international educational exchange, Native American policy and advocacy, minority business development, and community-based social justice work. Her published work includes her foundational chapter on Embodied Code-Switching® and co-authored scholarly writing on the body as cultural home, and her recent book extends this somatic, culture-centered lens to clinicians and communities seeking liberatory, embodied ways to heal across differences. In this episode, MaryCatherine McDonald PhD and Paul Krauss MA LPC discuss the concept and emotion of Joy. During dark times, it is difficult for most to "think of joy," however, Dr. McDonald has completed some compelling research and investigation into the benefits of "exercising Joy" along with expressing the troubles in our lives. MaryCatherine McDonald, PhD has authored a book entitled "The Joy Reset" --which helps readers identify barriers that prevent them from accessing joy—hypervigilance, emotional numbing, fear of loss, conditioning, guilt, and shame—and then redefines positive emotions as those tenacious, gritty, often tiny experiences that appear within the darkest moments and form the very foundation of psychological resilience. MaryCatherine McDonald is a research professor and life coach who specializes in the psychology and philosophy of trauma. Her work focuses on thinking critically about how we understand, define, and heal from traumatic experiences. She has published several research articles and book chapters, as well as three books on trauma. Detective Mike Weber is interviewed on the Intentional Clinician podcast with Paul Krauss MA LPC. Mike draws on his deep experience investigating Munchausen by Proxy(MBP)—a rare but harrowing form of child abuse where caregivers fabricate or induce illness in children for attention or other psychological gain. Weber has investigated more cases of medical child abuse than almost any other detective in the U.S., with over a dozen arrests and several convictions to his name. His work, often in partnership with medical experts, highlights the severe systemic challenges faced in prosecuting MBP crimes: cases are difficult to prove, victims are vulnerable, and the legal system is often hesitant to accept the reality that a mother could deliberately harm her child. Weber recounts intensely complex casework involving detailed deception, manipulation of medical professionals, and lasting trauma for victims. He describes cases where mothers made up or caused symptoms—one involving hundreds of falsified doctor visits over years, which ultimately was dismissed before reaching trial due to prosecutorial reluctance. Weber is outspoken about systemic shortcomings, emphasizing that many cases never see a courtroom and that awareness, better training, and stronger advocacy are urgently needed. Weber's book, The Mother Next Door, co-authored with Andrea Dunlop, combines true crime storytelling and psychological analysis to explore MBP through the lens of three chilling real cases: Hope Ybarra, Brittany Phillips, and Mary Welch. The book not only exposes the devastation of MBP but also examines the emotional consequences for families and the formidable difficulties in holding perpetrators accountable. Weber and Dunlop offer both expert insights and personal perspectives to illuminate the hidden epidemic of medical child abuse and the often-overlooked complexity of prosecuting MBP cases. Through his interviews, book, and advocacy, Detective Mike Weber is helping reshape public understanding and institutional response to subversive child abuse in the form of Munchausen by Proxy, pushing for a future where these children are better protected and perpetrators are held truly accountable. In addition to these topics, Paul Krauss MA LPC and the authors also explore the fascinating question of what makes humans happy, discussing the neuroscience behind happiness and the age-old debate about whether money can actually buy it. The conversation ventures further into timely questions about technology, including an insightful discussion on whether artificial intelligence will take over human jobs, with both authors providing perspective on the implications and myths surrounding AI and employment. The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy
Mindfulness, EMDR, and Wearable Tech: An Interview with Dr. Steve Dansiger Curt and Katie chat with Dr. Steve Dansiger about integrating mindfulness into EMDR, what therapists often get wrong about mindfulness, and how wearable technology might enhance trauma healing. Steve shares his journey from punk rock drummer to EMDR trainer to tech innovator—and how sound and vibration may support grounding, resourcing, and trauma reprocessing. About Our Guest: Dr. Steve Dansiger Dr. Steve Dansiger is a clinical psychologist, EMDRIA-approved EMDR consultant, longtime mindfulness practitioner, and co-founder of HapTech Holdings. He is the creator of the MET(T)A Protocol and co-author of multiple books on EMDR, trauma, addiction, and mindfulness. Steve's work spans clinical practice, innovation, and international teaching, bringing together ancient wisdom and cutting-edge tech. Key Takeaways: Therapists and clients often misunderstand mindfulness as “clearing the mind.” Mindfulness is already embedded in EMDR and helps stabilize and prepare for trauma work. Starting with just 1–2 minutes a day can be effective, especially with neurodivergent clients. Wearable tech using sound and vibration may help ground and resource clients in session and beyond. Therapists need to maintain their own mindfulness practice to model and teach it effectively. For full show notes, transcripts, and more episodes:
In his conversation with Dr. Ross Ellenhorn LICSW, Ph.D, Paul Krauss MA LPC explores themes central to both Ellenhorn's clinical philosophy and his recent book, Purple Crayons: The Art of Drawing a Life. Ellenhorn, a distinguished psychotherapist, sociologist, and founder of innovative mental health programs, brings an emphasis on reclaiming creativity and curiosity as vital tools for personal transformation and healing. The dialogue delves into how the metaphor of the "purple crayon"—inspired by Harold's imaginative adventures—serves as a call to embrace risk, playfulness, and authenticity in the face of conformity and societal norms. Drawing from Ellenhorn's biographical background and Krauss's pattern of unfiltered interviews on The Intentional Clinician Podcast, their exchange highlights the necessity of empowering individuals to draw their own paths, nurture their innate originality, and challenge the narratives that often hinder true change. Their discussion intertwines psychological insights with practical reflections on how imagination fuels resilience and self-realization. The interview also discusses the current changes and difficulties of American culture as well as the dangers facing the fields of psychotherapy and psychology. Kellee and Abby dive into the problems with CEU's across the field as a whole in this episode, but move specifically to discuss the Association of Play Therapy's (APT) 12-hour in-person CEU requirement. Abby and Kellee express their opinion around the incongruence of APT's DEI statement and their in-person CEU requirement. They go on further to explore the field's origins of white supremacy, ableism, and problematic Western measures of learning, and the need for more expansive ways to deepen our work as therapists. They emphasize the need for consultation and mentoring above webinars. Kellee and Abby hold many privileges, some of which include being two abled bodied pregnant women with the financial means to travel for CEU's. Andrew Henry LPC and Paul Krauss MA LPC recently met to talk about Andrew's new book "Heartwork"which is not available on Apple Books. From Andrew: Heartwork is a journey within to tap into vital resources for today! I want to thank Paul for narrating this section for me, I suffer from ALS which effects my vocal cords and makes it difficult for me to talk for long periods of time. Thank you Paul for helping me get the word out about my new book: Heartwork. Many counselors treat depression and anxiety by attempting to locate the root cause and process those feelings. While there is nothing per say wrong with this approach, I submit there is a kinder and self-validating way to calm the worry mind, while boosting the higher reasoning. My book demonstrates six case studies which use my Heartwork technique from many different walks of life over the last 1.5 to 2 years. Heartwork is currently available on Apple Books. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and in honor of my advocacy for more open conversation surrounding Mental health, I will be featuring episodes on ways to take care of our mental health so we can better care for ourselves and our children. Therapy is highly beneficial, and various modalities are used. EMDR (Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is an evidence-based approach that has been shown to help in processing traumatic events and changing negative patterns and helping people with mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, and OCD. I personally started EMDR earlier this year, and in honor of Maternal Mental Health Month, I invited Dr. Cassidy Freitas, who is a licensed marriage and family therapist who also does EMDR. We discuss: What EMDR is and the steps of EMDR Who would be a good candidate Examples of how EMDR helped me and Dr. Cassidy For more resources on EMDR: EMDR Institute, Psychologytoday.com, and EMDRIA. You can connect with Dr. Cassidy on Instagram @drcassidy, and for more resources, check out Dr. Cassidy's website.
