Rhasaan Fernandez is the owner of Boffo Cart and Sam's Log Cabin. Rhasaan was born and raised in San Francisco of Puerto Rican and Caucasian descent. Growing up in the 90s, Rhasaan was exposed to all the diverse cuisine in San Francisco. Rhasaan worked his way through the hospitality industry from California to Colorado and back. Rhasaan decided to start cooking his own style of food for everyone and began Boffo Cart. Circumstances also allowed him to become apart of an old roadhouse/speakeasy Sam's Log Cabin in Albany, CA which serves breakfast and home style Americana & Mexican cuisine. Boffo Cart started out as Rhasaan creating his own food for the streets and then progressed into catering and pop-ups. Boffo Cart can be found these days at several different farmer's markets throughout the Bay Area in Northern California known for always having fresh and organic delicious food. Rhasaan and I talked on the podcast about growing up in the Mission District in San Francisco, weird foods, seasonal produce, education through the hospitality industry, supporting local farmers and creating great food for the community. Appreciate Rhasaan for his time and support. We recorded this podcast on location inside his prep kitchen in Berkeley, California. https://www.boffocart.comShow Notes https://www.foodoriginspodcast.com/podcast-episode-37Support the show

It's the Great Depression and we're meeting our new cast of friends. It's very dusty, possibly magical, kind of fun, and a bit depressing. Produced by Kristen Riley and Daive Reed Edited by Daive Reed Thanks for being here and if you enjoyed the episode, please rate, review, and subscribe. Or, even easier, tell people about us! It really helps us out. Find us on Twitter and Instagram @CastFiles We also auto-post on YouTube, if that's your streaming service of choice, or if you like closed captions. And finally, email us at TheRotatingCastFiles@gmail.com SHOW NOTES Set Up: In the midst of the Dust Bowl, a traveling carnival roams from town to town scratching out a living. And a Methodist minister regains his faith in the lord after seeing amazing visions. Trigger Warnings: Sexual assault, human death, animal cruelty and death, child exploitation. Opening Lines: Samson: Before the beginning, after the great war between Heaven and Hell, God created the Earth, and gave dominion over it to the crafty ape he called man. And to each generation, there was born a creature of light and a creature of darkness. And great armies clashed by night in the ancient war between good and evil. There was magic then, nobility, and unimaginable cruelty. And so it was. Until the day that a false sun exploded over Trinity, and man traded away wonder for reason. Summary: Nightmare sequence. In Ben's opening dream, we see, various:Scudder being chased by the Usher through a cornfield Scudder retreating from Bruno the bear in World War 1 a hand (possibly Ben's or Boffo's) holding a Templar ring (probably Boffo's) bearing the motto "In Hoc Signo Vinces" ("By this sign you shall conquer" in Latin) Scudder, in a black tuxedo, and Belyakov face each other in the diner Sofie turning over the Magician during Ben's tarot reading the funeral procession in Tipton Ruthie with a snake during one of her acts Scudder popping his top hat a dead lamb a photo of the Babylon mining crew, focusing in on Scudder's picture Apollonia's rape by the Tattooed Man a picture of Felix's gun on a pillow next to four bullets a picture of Lobster Girl from Gunderson Ben wakes up from a dream with no arms or legs more scenes from the trench during World War 1, featuring Belyakov aiming at Scudder a shot of Dora Mae's funeral On a barren farm in the middle of a dust storm a young man, Ben Hawkins, watches over his dying mother. He reaches for her when she has a coughing fit and she pulls away, disgusted. "Don't touch me," she says before dying. It's fine. This probably won't impact the rest of his life. Outside, a group of trucks rolls down the highway. They stop to find Hawkins digging in the rock-hard ground with a man on a bulldozer shouting at him. Samson, the co-manager of a traveling carnival, bets his right-hand man, Jonesy, that the man on the bulldozer "squashes" Hawkin's meager resistance. Jonesy takes the bet and gets out of the truck to help. He realizes that Hawkins is trying to bury his mother and, after the bulldozer guy comes over to see what's up and finds out, Jonesy asks if he has shovels and has the carnival roustabouts help. The eclectic troupe, including conjoined twins, a giant, and a bearded lady, hold a small burial service for the deceased. The bulldozer man waits for the burial and funeral to complete, which is good of him, then destroys the house. As Samson and the gang try to decide what to do with Hawkins, a car is approaching and Ben collapses, so Ruthie has Gabriel carry Ben. In Mintern, California, Brother Justin Crowe delivers a sermon on the devil. An older woman, Eleanor, is listening to the sermon and as the plate is passed she reaches in and makes eye contact with the plate holder, to distract him. She takes money from the plate, but Iris, Crowe's sister, sees her. As Eleanor tries to leave during a song Iris stops her. Iris is terrifying. Justin talks to Eleanor in his home after the service, Iris leaves the room and Eleanor tries to talk herself out of the situation. Justin confronts her and suddenly she starts coughing up gold coins. Brother Justin takes it as a sign from god and asks her to pray with him. In the commentary, they say how the original was more in control of the situation and essentially made this happen. I appreciate that they tempered him and made him more complex to start, so he has a place to go. If he started badly, where would we go? It's very dramatic and the coins disappear, but the whole scene is played as though it occurred to both of them, not just as a vision from Brother Justin. Iris had left the room, so did not witness this. On the road, Samson and Jonesy are listening to the radio, we're driving by families and groups on the side of the road. It's showing a swath of the population during this time period. We get a glimpse of the folks in the town with the shot from the kids' room. Bunk beds and both kids scurry to the window to watch the carnival arrive in the night. They're so excited. Ben is passed out in Lila, the bearded lady, and Professor Lodz's truck. I love the hooka. It feels so fancy. The two are discussing their strange passenger and Lila asks Lodz, the carnival's mentalist, to tell her what Hawkins is dreaming about. I love the dynamic of these two immediately. It's obvious they're comfortable together, have a teasing relationship, and like to push one another. I'm sure it will all stay exactly this way. Lodz gives in and touches Ben's forehead. He starts to convulse and sees strange flashes of two men, one in a tuxedo and the other in a military uniform, in a restaurant, a man with a huge tree tattooed on his chest in a cornfield, what looks like WWI, and a bear with a tiny hat. Lila pulls Lodz away and he collapses after whispering, "Scudder." In the morning Ben meets the odd cast of characters and tries to hightail it back to town. We get to see the carnival being set up. In the commentary, they discuss how difficult it was to shoot these scenes because we have to imagine which portion or percentage of the carnival is set up at that point in time. We meet Sofie and Apollonia in a quick scene. We know Sofie is a tarot reader and her mother appears catatonic, however, they can communicate, somehow. Sofie speaks aloud, whether for our benefit or because that's how it works, but Appolonia doesn't speak aloud. She will throw tarot cards if she's frustrated. On Ben's way out of the trailer, he wraps himself in a flowery robe (they'd undressed and washed his clothes while he was out). He gets his clothes and leaves the carnival. Sofie catches up with him on the road, but he's not exactly thrilled to be there. He's rude so she drives off to town. This next scene is really sad, with the tent city and the grieving woman. It's set up in a way that he gets through to the grieving woman but we don't know if it's magical or not. This scene is so heartbreaking. Sofie continues on to town. Ben walks up to the gas station and notices Sophie's vehicle. He hears screaming from inside and rushes in to find two men trying to rape Sofie. He helps attack her attackers and they escape going back to camp. Jonesy sees them arrive, Sofie's torn clothes and fast exit from the vehicle make it obvious what happened, but not who instigated it. Jonesy doesn't come off well here, but Sofie is more aware of the world they live in than Jonesy is. Meanwhile, Samson tries to convince Ben to stay on with the carnival. Samson is amazing in this scene. Ben walks off. We see him come back though and Samson continues to chat him up while Ben eats. That night Ben walks the carnival, now in full brilliance, and sees all the happiness it brings. We see hand-painted banners, a lighted midway, rides, and acts. He also sees Jonesy being super sweet with the girl in the little red wagon. Next, he wanders to the coochie show. The commenters had a field day talking about adding this family. After the cooch show, Ben realizes there's also sex work involved and is scandalized! Sofie brings Ben his jacket, and they chat. Ben says he's not a “carnie”. Another nightmare. Foreshadowing. Back in California, Brother Justin has a similar nightmare to Ben's and goes for a walk. He walks through town, then through a migrant camp. He arrives in from Mr. Chin's. Neon lights and all! He's approached by a woman enticing him to go inside, but he grabs her and she slaps him away. It starts to snow and then rain blood. As he watches the sign it burns out except for a small cross in the middle. He drops to his knees and weeps. The snow and blood are gone, and the street in is present-day with people milling around. The next morning Ben helps pack up the carnival and lets Sofie read his cards. She decides to read his past and as she turns the cards Ben has flashbacks of his mother. In his flashback, she is screaming at a younger version of himself for digging up a dead cat and when she pulls it from him it springs to life. Horrified she says he has been marked by the devil. Later when she is dying he tries to touch her, to heal her, and she shrinks away, grabbing a cross. Sofie sees that Ben is visibly distraught and she asks what he sees, she can't see his visions - only what the cards indicate. Or actually, what the cards and her mother say to her. He's flashing back to his childhood when he's holding a kitten and his mother tries to take it from him. Rightly, as far as she knows since the kitten had been buried for 3 days at that point. She takes it from him, but it's not dead anymore. It ends badly. He tells Sofie he doesn't see anything and tells her to continue. She turns the last card and tells him that he has a great gift that he has kept secret, squandered. She asks what he is hiding and he stammers "nothing" and runs away. He comes to a neighboring field of crops and weeps. A little girl asks why he is crying and he looks up to find a disabled girl, who we saw earlier enjoying the carnival. She says her mother says the carnival folk is marked. Ben says they're just people. He asks if it hurts, meaning her legs, and she says yes. Samson hollers at him to ask if he's coming along. Ben ignores him and Samson says, whatever let's go. Ben leans down and touches the little girl's legs. As he concentrates the field around them starts to shrink and die. He runs off towards the carnival as it leaves and jumps in the last truck. The little girl stands up and runs toward her house, the field around her is dying as she goes. Miracles ain't free, as the commenters say. As much as Ben was trying to help, during the dust bowl and Great Depression, the family probably would've been better off with that food. We've seen this girl a few times in this episode and have no reason to believe she was unhappy, or really worse off than anyone else.

To supplement the carnival's income, Samson arranges a "fireball show". Ben tries to drive off the torments of his dreams by staying awake. He remains defiant to Lodz's urges to listen to his dreams and learn from them. Samson hands Ben the medal, saying he is the rightful owner as Scudder's son. The medal's significance becomes clear when Lodz touches it and experiences the same strong visions as Ben had with Boffo's ring. When Sofie envisions her mother being raped by a tattooed man, she unburdens her heart to Jonesy and Samson. Iris, who is still in search of Justin, participates in Dolan's radio show but rejects his romantic advances. Brother Justin is released from the mental institution.

In this Very Special Episode of Sick Burns we look at one of the biggest charity records of the 1980's -- a decade full of charity records. “A Very Special Christmas” has been a holiday juggernaut since the first album was released in 1987. A compilation of Christmas standards from music's hottest 80's stars, the album was produced by Jimmy Iovine, who was inspired to make something special to commemorate this special time of year after losing his beloved father during the holidays. He called out the big guns, dusted off the Phil Spector playbook, and produced something truly special. All proceeds benefited the Special Olympics, which now counts VSPs many albums as its largest source of funding. It's a super boffo episode with coverage of not one but 15 different songs! Put on your elf hat, grab a cup of wassail and join us, won't you? Inspired by the music? Why not consider a direct gift to Special Olympics?***AND***Visit our website at www.sickburnspod.com to leave a comment or a voicemail!Instagram @Sick_Burns_PodTwitter @Sick80sFacebook https://www.facebook.com/SickBurnsPodcastEmail us at Burningthe80s@gmail.comAnd give us a rating or review on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher or Podchaser!

(Today's edition comes with an audio edition! Listen to today's nine-minute story by clicking the play tab above.)A quick diversion from photography and my recent dive into family history today to take a minute and marvel at a news bite from this week. (There is a photo angle, but you'll need to read all the way through to get there. Bear with me!) Newsflash! Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, the two longtime Hollywood trade publications, are now corporate siblings. Wow! This is like Coke swallowing Pepsi. Or Toyota bringing Nissan into the fold. Hard to believe. The company that owns Variety snapped up THR as well. Read on and you'll see why I think this is such a huge deal. As you may or may not know, at an earlier time in my life, I was a THR reporter, at a time when Variety was king and THR was a very weak, No. 2. Competition was fierce, unlike anything I ever experienced anywhere else, at any other time. Like heart-thumping, every morning intense. Each night I would go to sleep, hoping I wouldn't be scooped in the morning. I'd wake up, and that's all I could still think about, with a pit in my stomach, on the drive into Hollywood. I'd arrive to the offices on Sunset Blvd., in-between Hollywood High and the Corners of the World building, breathing heavily, and immediately grabbing what was awaiting me, on my desk. The latest issue of Daily Variety, already marked up in red pencil. The stories that were on my beat were highlighted, and the subtext was simple: why didn't you have this too?Because Variety and THR were so competitive, the Variety reporters told their sources that if they “gave” their story to us, they wouldn't be noted in the Show-Biz Bible. And Variety played really hard. Sometimes, they gave an inch, and agreed to note the story. It would appear on the next to last page, as a two-to-four paragraph short. It was that rough. Variety, of course had the storied history that created such pieces of slang as the words “Boffo,” (for great) “Biopic,” (biography) and “Nix” (for reject.) The famous headline “Sticks Nix Hick Pix,” was immortalized in the George M. Cohan biopic, “Yankee Doodle Dandy.” THR had the Rambling Reporter (and the late Robert Osborne before he became….that Robert Osborne.)A Variety front page article, a mention in Army Archerd's column, those were the places Hollywood power wanted to be. THR was an afterthought, but one they indeed wanted as well. The two Trade papers had small circulations of around 15,000 each. But talk about influencers! Every subscriber was the ultimate influencer, from studio chiefs, to network heads, show buyers and schedulers, producers and other industry “pros” who wanted to be in the know. My phone rang every morning between 9 a.m. and 9:15 with an intensity I never would see anywhere else in my career. Ever. The feedback was amazing and instantaneous, and the screaming was at high-level decibels. My job was to get an exclusive. Or at least the same story, day and date. My competitor was a crusty reporter, now deceased, named Morrie Gelman. He was a veteran with the best Rolodex in town, or so it seemed to me. I was young and learned on the job, by going to lunch with sources every day, and attending every industry function there was. I didn't care about anyone else than Morrie. If the LA Times got a scoop, it was irrelevant. If Time or Newsweek wrote about something, it was old news. Variety was all that mattered to me. THR was founded in 1930 by Billy Wilkerson, a one-time owner of the Ciro's nightclub on the Sunset Strip as his answer to Variety, which had begun in 1905 as a New York based weekly chronicler of vaudeville and theater. The L.A. version, “Daily” Variety, started up in 1933. The trades were mostly about casting news, executive appointments, labor updates and “slate” stories. Like that Paramount was set to produce 8 new films in the coming year. It would go on to name them, and the attached producers and talent. But it was the exec appointments that were the lifeblood, because it told our subscribers who was in, and who was out. In other words, whom could they call on? My beat was home video and pay TV, two areas that were brand new, at a time when new channels like MTV and Disney Channel were launching. HBO was becoming a force in Hollywood, and the studios hated them back then. I reported that, and HBO despised me. I went out to lunch every day, pulling up to the valet in my white, beaten up and really dirty Mazda that was covered head to toe with bumper stickers. I arrived to fancy places like the Polo Lounge, Brown Derby, Jimmy's, the Palm and other long gone industry hang-outs because that's where the people I interviewed wanted to meet. Even with the THR/Variety rivalry, plenty of people were happy to talk to me. I just couldn't reach the top caliber as often as Variety did. Meanwhile, things were pretty crazy in the newsroom. Gina, Rena and Tina were three of the reporters, and every time one of their names was called out, they all turned and said, “Yes?” One of the sales associates, Pat, was all over the newsroom, daily, urging us to cozy up to her advertisers and write glowing pieces about them. Especially during AFM time. AFM was the American Film Market, and it was a venue where cheap independent movies were brokered in suites at a Sunset Strip hotel. Producers got attention for their shlocky titles by buying full page ads in THR. Menahem Golan and his Cannon Films was our benefactor. I didn't write about movies. But I wrote about Menahem. It was mandatory. He was a big advertiser. He paid our salaries. (Some of his films included titles like “Hospital Massacre” and “Enter the Ninja,” along with some “Death Wish” sequels and a Sylvester Stallone vehicle about arm wrestling called “Over the Top.”My first editor was fired after the publisher's daughter requested to have her boyfriend installed as editor instead. They married a year later, and when they returned from the honeymoon, the publisher fired her new son-in-law. No reason given. I left soon after. In recent times, THR engineered what seemed to be an amazing comeback, investing millions, switching from daily publication to online focus and producing a once a week glossy magazine that was like Vanity Fair with more of an industry bent. Variety, meanwhile, lost its muscle and took a backseat to the two hot online “trades” of the internet era, Deadline and TheWrap. Meanwhile, all that money THR spent on expansion wasn't paying off. The company had some big layoffs earlier this year, and now, it's part of the Penske Media Group. Which also owns Deadline and Billboard too. The only independent left is TheWrap. It's all so sad. But at least the THR reporters don't have to endure having their rivals stories circled anymore. P.S. And speaking of the photo angleIn keeping with the Photowalk theme of this newsletter, where are my great photos of the newsroom? I can only find one roll of Black & White Tri-X that was snapped during this time period, on a contact sheet. First of all, shame on me, for not being more proactive. But look at how far we've come folks! Back then, you had a choice of pro-level 35mm cameras, which were hard to operate for most people. “Disposable” cardboard cameras began appearing in the 1980s, but they were only used for special occasions and places with great light. So for everyday life, most of us never bothered. Compare that to now, where everyone you know has a camera in their pocket, and you can ask anyone to grab a shot of you with no issues. And the smartphone cameras are so good, they can shoot in pretty much any kind of light. Still, I would have loved to illustrate this post with historical images from the newsroom. For those of you reading, who may be in this position in a few years, some friendly words of advice. Take more photos, and back them up!Song of the WeekWho's a fan of “Dream a Little Dream of Me?” It's one of my favorites to play on the guitar. Any requests for next time?Today's morning beach photoUntil next time, thanks as always for going down memory lane with me. Challenge, simplicity, and addiction to pain, that's just a few topics we chat about with Roberta Boffo, an Italian artist based in Hong Kong. Her works showcase symbiotic relations between her love for traditional Asian art mediums such as ink and calligraphy and the emotional, vibrant side of her Italian heritage. We talked about how to get inspiration and the recipe to succeed when starting a new project. The last 15 minutes of the show is a walk around Roberta's studio, where you can hear about her work and her advice on what to do when "you don't fit." Tom talks about Arrow again and how popular it is in Hungary, also the newish Wolverine movie and how X-Men Origins: Wolverine being leaked ruined the movie for everyone. We also discuss the overall idea of movies being planned around Comic-Con, and how much better entertainment would be if the internet didn’t exist. This leads into the time Tom almost getting to play Super Mario 3 early, how everyone saw Super Mario 3 for the first time in The Wizard, and the new Doctor Who: Eighth Doctor mobisode.
