Meg and Komie Vora- are ecopreneurs, the co-founders and designers behind Delikate Rayne (DR)- an award-winning, ethical, eco-friendly, cruelty-free women's label that produces in made to order/limited quantities to ensure zero waste whenever possible. The Vora sisters are disturbing the fashion industry by being a voice for the voiceless, empowering other females to go after their passion and pushing boundaries as brown creatives. The Vora sisters are first generation born and raised in the USA. They are going against the grain- forgoing their traditional cultural and gender expectations, by using their upbringing (Jain + Hindi roots plus born & raised vegetarian- now vegan) alongside their adoration of animals, to create green luxury- definitive and progressive vegan designs with a purpose into existence. DR also serves as a platform to bring awareness to the many overlooked issues in fashion including sustainability, cruelty and ethics. Plus making compassion cool by redefining luxury through changing the preconceived notions of what "lux" is. They also curate a conscious sanctuary through DR Diary which focuses on and educates about vegan/sustainable fashion, beauty, food, travel, wellness, mindfulness & more for your higher self. The Vora sisters had no formal industry experience or contacts, but their willingness not to conform to others expectations outweighed their fears and obstacles. Through their unstoppable drive and determinism to follow their desires, they set out to do whatever they could to make their dream a reality. What's particularly interesting about the Vora sisters is turning the things that they were once alienated and made fun of for while growing up resulted into making a remarkable impact later in their life. As a result, the sisters have become one of the pioneers of the kind fashion movement and are leading examples of how their unconventional upbringing and values led them to discover their passion which ultimately led to uncovering their purpose which is now channeled through the creation of Delikate Rayne. To date, the sisters and their company were on the front page in both digital and print of Colombia based Be Vegan Magazine and India West. Other notable interviews/features include: Forbes, NBC, Miss Bish, Galore, The Zoe Report, WWD, E! Online, The Los Angeles Times, StyleCaster, BuzzFeed, VegNews, Sakara, The Hindustan Times, Cheddar, Business Rockstars, The Orange County Register and many more. In addition, the Vora sisters have been guests on several podcasts, TV shows, radio segments and conferences/panels. The sisters have also conceptualized and served as creative directors for multiple fashion for good projects including PETA USA, NYLON magazine, PETA India, The Animal Hope and Wellness Center and others. They are also guest writers/features for 3 books on vegan style, living, and green business acumen. Today, Meg and Komie have built Delikate Rayne into a leading platform of bringing awareness all while paving the way for other compassionate companies. In this episode Yoga Is Vegan's Holly Skodis and Meg and Komie Vora discuss the following:Growing up in a Hindi and Jain household and how Ahimsa entered into their lives. Species Unite
Marc Ching on his time inside Asia's dog slaughterhouses

Species Unite

Marc Ching has all of the makings of a superhero. He is the founder of the Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation, which is an organization that’s dedicated to rescuing abused and neglected animals. In 2015 he expanded that outreach to include rescuing dog from the horrific Asian dog meat trade - where it’s estimated that 30 million dogs a year are killed for their meat. What makes it especially horrific though, is that many of those dogs are brutally tortured first. Between 2015, when he first he learned of the trade and 2018, Marc has made close to twenty trips going undercover into multiple dog slaughterhouses. When he’s been inside, posed as a wealthy meat buyer, he has filmed hundreds of videos that show some of the worst things that human beings are capable of: dogs being nail gunned to walls, being beaten with lead pipes and bats, being blowtorched, having their limbs chopped off while they bleed out, all while the dogs are fully conscious and alive. This is done because of the myth that dogs that die in terror and agony taste better. I think that until Marc started risking his life to go inside and make these videos, very few people in the US at least had any idea that the dog meat trade even existed and far fewer knew of the torture that often goes hand and hand within it. Marc is a huge hero of mine but I would guess that he’s a huge hero of anyone who has ever met him. He’s tough, he’s brave, he’s relentless, and he is as compassionate as they come. He is one of those people who - the minute that he heard about something terrible happening jumped on a plane, and then he figured out how he could help. He hasn’t stopped helping since, not only with dogs from the meat trade but also in the US, taking on some of the hardest rescue and abuse cases there are, running clinics and doing rescue in Mexico, and working on legislation and changing laws to give the animals here better lives. I interviewed Marc right after one of these trips. He’d just returned from China, Cambodia, and South Korea. Our conversation will give you some insight as to what he’s faced, what these dogs go through and just how incredibly difficult the work he’s done and is doing is. Just a warning, some of what we discuss is tough to hear: details on some of what he’s seen, filmed and bared witness to inside the slaughterhouses. I think our minds often want to skip through the terrible parts because it’s so hard to hear about, but I also think that’s part of our responsibility as humans on this planet, to bear witness to see or hear about what we are doing to other species. If Marc can be in it, and see it first hand and film it and if these animals have to actually endure it, then I think that the least we can do is allow ourselves to hear about it, to become aware of it.

If you listened to our last episode you know who Bree Williamson is. If you didn’t you probably still know who Bree Williamson is. For the few of guy who don’t she is a phenomenal human being and incredible Emmy nominated actress known for shows like General Hospital, One Life To Live, Haven and Private Eyes. She was also on an episode of Castle, which is how she and Toks met. And now they’re buddies. Toks enjoys her conversations with Bree so much that she thought you might also be enthralled by her opinions, kindness and sass. And here it is, the first episode of Tea For Two With Bree! We will be doing an episode with each other at least once a month. We kick it off this week with the true history of Thanksgiving, why most people believe Turkey is the center of the traditional meal, the reasons we do and don’t enjoy travel that time of year and many more things, some of which have to do with Thanksgiving (we are prone to tangents)! We don’t always agree, but we’re always kind about it and we always listen to each other, respect each other and learn from each other; life lessons we all need. Hope you enjoy the episode!   Historical information about the origins of Thanksgiving as we know it can be found in the “Turkey For The Birds” episode of Food For Thought from November 22nd, 2017. Angela Rushing is a world traveler, adventurer, trust and freedom seeker, health and fitness enthusiast, animal advocate, and author. After a successful career in the beauty industry as a top hairstylist in Los Angeles, it looked like I had it made, although my life felt empty and incomplete, unfulfilled and deeply depressed. Having grown up as the only child in an alcoholic family, I self-medicated well into my thirties and forties to numb the pain of my childhood and adolescence. I finally reached a point where I knew I had to make a significant change and find real meaning in my life, or I would likely die. Her message rings true: You can't overcome obstacles in your life while in 'victimhood.' My book is called The Birth Mother Roller Coaster: Navigating through guilt and fear and arriving at self-love and completion. It is an account of how I became a birth mother. I share my lonely childhood growing up in an alcoholic household, my teenage and young adult years of depression and my own drug and alcohol use. I knew my experience leading up to my adoption/placement and the feelings that came with that must be shared with the world. Still today, adoption and specifically, the role of the birth mother is still such a taboo subject and so rarely discussed. The fact that there is so much shame around the birth mother that there is little opportunity for her to experience healing, or to even realize that healing is a real possibility. Shame doesn’t allow for healing, in fact, it lives in some of us for our entire lives, preventing intimacy and closeness with friends and partners. Often, birth moms are so filled with shame and self-hatred that they never feel they deserve to feel happy. They may become addicts, criminals or commit suicide. There are so many adoptees who excitedly search for their birth parents, to have their hopes and dreams shattered (again) because often the birth mom has never healed, never given herself the chance to reconcile her shame, never had a support system. Consequently, she shows up deeply damaged and incapable of having a healthy functioning relationship with this child who so desperately wants to connect with his or her biological parent. This often results in the devastation of the adoptee being “rejected” a second time. Angela is also involved with an organization to help our four-legged friends. This speaks volumes as to who Angela and her friends are! Helping those who cannot help themselves. Here is the link to check them out and help our precious furry friends from literally, becoming dog meat. Animal Hope and Wellness Whether you are a birth mother or an adoptive mother, Angela has the insight to help you work through all the emotions surrounding that decision. Her interview will grip your heart whether you are a mom or not. You don't want to miss this interview:

“I’m a huge believer in humanity. I wake up and look at my children and I see something that’s so pure; at that age they don’t know what violence is; and they don’t know how to hate yet. And I think that is what inspires me to do the things that I do.”Marc ChingThis week's guest is a straight up hero. One of the most courageous and committed animal rights activists I have ever met, Marc Ching (@animalhopeandwellness) is the founder of Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation, a non-profit devoted to the rescue and rehabilitation of dogs abused and often tortured at the hands of the Asian dog meat trade.A family man, successful small business owner and animal lover who has been treating dogs (and humans) for years as a holistic nutritionist, in 2011 Marc began using his skills to rescue and rehabilitate abused dogs in need and place them into homes — work he does primarily in and around his home in Los Angeles. But Marc's evolution into an ardent animal rights activist didn't begin until 2015, when he heard about something called the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in China. He understood that dog meat is simply part of the regional cuisine across many parts of Asia. What he didn't understand were the reports of mistreatment and abuse. So he decided to infiltrate the festival to learn more. What Marc discovered was an utterly horrific, systemic practice of torture far more pervasive than anything he could have previously imagined.Life for Marc would never be the same again.According to the Humane Society, 30 million dogs are slaughtered every year across Asia with an estimated 10 million per year in China alone. A significant portion of these animals are brutally tortured — often burned and boiled alive prior to death — a practice attributable to the bizarre and misguided belief that tortured dog meat tastes better and provides enhanced health benefits.Let that sink in for a moment.Attending Yulin transformed Marc from an essentially normal, suburban family man into a man obsessed. Over the last two years, Marc has devoted all his free time and resources to combating the Asian dog meat trade. Posing undercover as as a wealthy dog meat buyer, he has traveled extensively across China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, South Korea and Indonesia to document and expose the inhuman practices of this barbaric industry. This is dangerous work. Marc has been chased, harassed, beat up and even shot. But to date, he has saved over 1,000 dogs, many on his own dime. More importantly, his work has been essential in catalyzing global awareness of dog meat trade practices, which in turn has led to legislative and regulatory reform. There is something undoubtedly heroic about Marc. But it's a heroism that comes at a cost. This work has traumatized him. Perhaps even permanently damaged him. He's made peace with the trade-off. Maybe that makes him even more heroic. I don't know.Mark's work has been extensively profiled in outlets that include the New York Times, Forbes, Entrepreneur, The Hollywood Reporter, The Telegraph, The Independent, Buzzfeed, and even Breitbart. It's an honor to celebrate the difficult work that Marc does. My hope is that this conversation will raise additional awareness around wrongs we must collectively work to correct.NOTE: The subject matter of today's conversation is disturbing. It's an emotional conversation that traverses sensitive issues. That said, I believe it's an important conversation to have as conscious, global citizens. A conversation I don’t think we can or should shy away from.On that note, I encourage all of you to listen and listen with an open ... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
