Our society today is facing an epidemic of anxiety. Despite technology that promises to make our lives faster and easier, it seems that we're more anxious than ever. In 2020, Google searches for “anxiety” reached an all-time high. We have to look beyond the diagnosis of anxiety and seek to find the root cause of why so many people are living with such high stress and dysregulation that are creating anxiety. There is something bigger going on here. And since we're whole humans, we need to look at the whole picture – mind, body and spirit – when thinking about how we heal and manage anxiety. My guest on this show, Dr. Ellen Vora, is a psychiatrist who takes a functional medicine approach to anxiety, looking at mental health factors and physical health factors, such as sleep, digestion and blood sugar, that can add up to throw us out of balance and contribute to feelings of anxiety. She also helps us to distinguish between feelings of anxiety that come from a physical imbalance vs. true anxiety, which comes from our inner compass telling us something truly isn't ok. Listen to discover: What's causing our current epidemic of anxiety The connection between sleep and anxiety Why blood sugar imbalances can cause "false anxiety" The difference between true anxiety and false anxiety The many reasons for cell phone-induced anxiety Spirituality and anxiety management A psychiatrist's honest opinion about psychedelics, medications and anxiety We need to start taking a “layered” approach to treating and managing anxiety by looking at the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual elements of our lives and how they work together to create stress or health. This hopeful approach to anxiety empowers us all to make choices that support our well-being, even in the face of real personal and mental health challenges. "I was sort of taking the temperature of our society, and the temperature right now is anxiety." - Dr. Ellen Vora "False anxiety is anxiety that is not our true essence." - Dr. Ellen Vora "It's not just one thing that we have to look at." - Michelle Chalfant "Genes plays a role, but that keeps a lot of us feeling stuck and feeling destined to be anxious....it's more dynamic than we appreciate." - Dr. Ellen Vora "Our problems, our stressors are still valid. It's just that if we had a snack and our blood sugar was more stable in that moment, we would be more resilient in the face of our stressors." - Dr. Ellen Vora "Our mind is the consummate meaning maker." - Dr. Ellen Vora “It's not like we have to dramatically change everything that we do, but we just want to make informed choices.” - Dr. Ellen Vora “We don't get to gluten free or decaf coffee our way out of our true anxiety.” - Dr. Ellen Vora “I would have my clients sit in their bodies and feel what was going on, and their physical symptoms would start to change.” - Michelle Chalfant “[Anxiety] is the physical manifestation of unfelt emotions.” - Michelle Chalfant “It's our body that's able to listen and really dial in and tap into a deeper knowing.” - Dr. Ellen Vora “It's turning toward the anxiety instead of turning away from.” - Michelle Chalfant “We reach outside of ourselves to ‘fix us'…and it doesn't end it. We've gotta get to the root.” - Michelle Chalfant “We need to change our narrative of what is materially possible.” - Dr. Ellen Vora  “We're never stuck. We are never broken.” - Dr. Ellen Vora LINKS & RESOURCES Dr. Ellen Vora Website https://ellenvora.com/ Dr. Ellen Vora Instagram https://www.instagram.com/ellenvoramd/ "The Anatomy of Anxiety" (Dr. Ellen Vora book) https://www.amazon.com/Anatomy-Anxiety-Understanding-Overcoming-Response/dp/0063075091 The Self-Worth Meditation Bundle https://theadultchair.com/worthy MORE ADULT CHAIR The Adult Chair® Website https://theadultchair.com  The Adult Chair® Events https://theadultchair.com/events/ The Adult Chair® Coaching Certification https://theadultchair.com/certification STAY CONNECTED Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themichellechalfant Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheMichelleChalfant/ The Adult Chair® Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theadultchair/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Michellechalfant

To be human is to experience anxiety. To some extent, our survival requires it. Unfortunately, anxiety can more frequently impede our living more than it helps. Many times, we try to stuff it away, hoping to deny its existence, which doesn't really work. As one of the biggest contributors to psychology, Carl Jung, once said, “What we resist persists" …and tends to get worse.” So, my friends, it's up to us to deal with this bugger. While there many ways to deal with it, some are more helpful than others. How can we best attend to our anxiety? What are some simple lifestyle changes we can make that can reduce the negative impact it has on us? And how can we actually listen in to our anxiety to see what it might tell us? Fortunately, I know just the person to ask these and so many other questions about anxiety! Dr. Ellen Vora (https://ellenvora.com/) is a Columbia University Medical School-educated psychiatrist who works in Manhattan. She's the author of a book I devoured called The Anatomy of Anxiety about which Publisher's Weekly said, “Readers struggling with anxiety would do well to seek out this first-rate primer." I wholly agree. What's more, Ellen creates a compelling argument that anxiety isn't merely brain disorder but a whole-body condition and she addresses anxiety through that lens. So, listen in as Ellen and I look at the Anatomy of Anxiety. Book Link: https://tinyurl.com/5cdvwef4

Anxiety affects more than 40 million Americans. This number only continues to increase as we deal with the impact of COVID-19 and the pandemic lockdowns. Until recently, the US has also not given mental health the attention it has needed. In addition, conventional medicine has primarily viewed anxiety as a result of brain chemistry and psychology, when more evidence now points to its origins to be rooted in the physical body. Listen to this edition of Love From The Hyp, where we will dive deeper into anxiety with acclaimed psychiatrist, Dr Ellen Vora. Dr Vora will share a new and unconventional approach to anxiety from her latest book, “The Anatomy of Anxiety”, including; recognizing True versus False anxiety, treating anxiety through more holistic pathways-like understanding the impact of sleep, diet, caffeine, exercise, stress and hormone imbalances. She will also touch on supplements to help with anxiety, and the mindset needed to also overcome it. If you have struggled with anxiety, you won't want to miss this insightful interview!

“We are suffering unnecessarily because our physical bodies are out of balance.” Dr. Vora Our guest this week is Dr. Ellen Vora, a board-certified psychiatrist, acupuncturist, and yoga teacher, and she is the author of The Anatomy of Anxiety. She takes a functional medicine approach to mental health—considering the whole person and addressing imbalance at the root. Dr. Vora received her B.A. from Yale University and her M.D. from Columbia University. It's normal to occasionally experience anxiety, such as when we're faced with a high-stakes meeting, a stressed-out boss, or a conflict with a colleague. But according to the National Institute of Mental Health, in any given year, 19% of U.S. adults are suffering from an anxiety disorder, and 31% will deal with a disorder at least once in their lifetime.   Dr. Vora explains false anxiety – avoidable anxiety, causes real suffering but can have a straight forward, physical basis. When anxious, we tend to get trapped in false or limited ways of thinking – not that the feelings we are experiencing aren't real or valid. However, these thought patterns create a debilitating negative spiral that can take over our lives by convincing us of impending doom and further exacerbating our sense of helplessness. Dr. Vora shares her tips to learn how to translate anxious feelings into purposeful action. EPISODE 100!! Ellen Vora, MD is a board-certified psychiatrist, acupuncturist, and yoga teacher, and she is the author of the bestselling book The Anatomy of Anxiety. She takes a functional medicine approach to mental health—considering the whole person and addressing imbalance at the root. Dr. Vora received her B.A. from Yale University and her M.D. from Columbia University. In her book Anatomy of Anxiety, she has a whole chapter on Food for Thought in which she shares her own personal story of discovering she had a food addiction. Today she shares her journey to recovery with food and how that has influenced her professional career today. Namely, in how she treats the whole person, looking for places where states like anxiety and depression might be rooted in the body, whether it's less-than-ideal nutrition and an out-of-whack gut, or poor sleep and breathing. In today's interview we talk about: Ellen's personal story How food addiction plays a role in eating disorders How we need to watch out for contributing to eating disorders through a food addiction treatment modality The difference between true and false anxiety Why it's important to treat false anxiety first The importance of a BOTH/AND approach in recovery: that multiple things can be true at the same time and that everybody has a right to their experience, regardless of what somebody else is experiencing. Why Ellen believes she can tolerate some of her addictive foods when she is in different countries and on different soil Does gut permeability combined with opiate-like addictive foods create a landscape for higher levels of food addiction in North America? Why do we have such a hard time asking for help? Why living in an Emotion-phobic culture can lead us to seek food rather than address our unmet needs How advertisers prey on our fear response which activates us into that unmet need scarcity mindset How do we get quiet to determine our needs in a world full of noise and adverse? Can you be radically intentional in the life choices you make? How do we find the middle in bringing the eating disorder world and the food addiction world together rather than them remaining so far apart and offering opposing treatments? This week we are stepping in stride with Niraj Vora, Co-Founder of The Stride Shop. The Stride Shop is a local physical therapy clinic focused around runners and tailoring to their specific needs. What brings a certain level of uniqueness to The Stride Shop is the fact that they are out of network. This means they may have a little higher price tag, but they focus on that next level concierge service and spend as much time with the patient as needed. What this allows is for them to get down to the root of the issue rather than simply having you work through some exercises and moving on to the next patient. Viraj and RT have focused from the beginning on making this practice unique and focused on a specific set of people, runners. Originally founded in New Orleans, they have added another practice right here in Baton Rouge. Niraj discussed the importance of getting down to the root of the issue rather than simply treating the patient for a surface level injury. Additionally, we discussed the struggles that solopreneurs experience each and every day, ultimately, when is the right time to make the first hire? Thank you for your continued support of the show, it is through you the viewers that we are able to bring amazing episodes each and every week. And there's also just a lack of proper care for this population. I think, generally speaking, if a runner goes to see somebody they aren't really talking to somebody who knows what it's like to go run an eighteen mile run on a Sunday morning.” (10:03) (Niraj) “If you're able to train without making the situation worse, there may be a fairly straightforward solution that can keep you training and address whats going on. But if you wait four or five months and have carried that pain and that injury for that long, it becomes a little bit harder a lot of times to treat that. So, I would say sooner is better. I know that goes against a lot of human nature, especially runners who just want to keep going.” (19:38) (Niraj) “I do a lot of deep breathing exercises as a preparatory for exercising or running for my patients just to tap into that rest and rejuvenation recovery system. So, the more that we can send that signal - activate an area, send a signal to the brain that this is a non threat, start to carve that pathway - the better.” (23:28) (Ryan) “The more than we can tap into the parasympathetic system when it comes to chronic injuries, the better that recovery is going to be.” (24:59) (Ryan) “I will say that this probably is one of the most important situations to proceed slowly. When it comes to pain and nervous system, I always tell people that basically you have a cup, and that cup is how much stress that your body can take. And so, it doesn't mean that it's only physical stress. When you have Covid or an illness, there are mental stressors that go along with it.” (35:19) (Niraj) “I think sometimes healthcare professions - ourselves included - maybe miss the mark when we talk about aqua jogging or cycling as the best forms of cross-training for runners. I'm not on that train anymore.” (43:53) Resources MentionedWhitney's LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/whitney-heins-02ba3b5 (https://www.linkedin.com/in/whitney-heins-02ba3b5) The Mother Runners Club – https://www.themotherrunners.com/ (https://www.themotherrunners.com/) Ryan's LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan-hill-pt-dpt-ocs-09565476/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan-hill-pt-dpt-ocs-09565476/) The Stride Shop –...

Backed by the latest scientific research and her own clinical work, Dr Ellen Vora offers a fresh, much needed look at mental health, offering actionable strategies for managing our moods. Dr Vora challenges the conventional view of anxiety as a mental disorder, suggesting instead that much of what we call anxiety begins in the body. Rather than our troubled thoughts creating physical symptoms, she argues that many types of anxiety are the result of states of imbalance in our bodies, whether blood sugar crashes, caffeine highs or sleep deprivation. Her clinical observation shows this type of anxiety is far more preventable than we may realise, responding almost immediately to straightforward adjustments to diet and lifestyle. And other forms of anxiety, when listened to and honoured instead of suppressed, can be seen as a course correction to help nudge us back to a more balanced life. Learn more about your ad choices. I had the honor of connecting with Dr. Ellen Vora today. She is a board-certified psychiatrist, acupuncturist, and yoga teacher. She is also the author of the best-selling book The Anatomy of Anxiety, which is one of my go-to resources on mental health.  Dr. Vora takes a functional medicine approach to mental health, considering the whole person and addressing the imbalance at the root.  In this episode, Dr. Vora and I dive into some ongoing real-world issues from the perspective of a mental health provider. We talk about some of the limits of traditional modalities, the impact of the pandemic, and the ensuing collective trauma. We discuss the root causes of substance abuse, promiscuity, alcohol, the avoidance of uncomfortable feelings, and resiliency. We discuss the physiology of the brain and gut and how they pertain to food addictions. We speak about gender differences with an emphasis on the impact of synthetic oral contraceptives on inflammation, micronutrient depletion, changes in the gut microbiome, and libido. We also talk about changes that occur in the body during perimenopause and menopause.  I loved having this discussion with Dr. Vora! You can follow her on social media and check out her book, The Anatomy of Anxiety!  Stay tuned for more! IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: As a society, we have experienced a lot of stress and loss recently. Dr. Vora discusses the themes she observed with her patients and loved ones over the last two years. Dr. Vora describes the two extremes she noticed in parents during the pandemic. How should parents deal with their feelings in front of their kids in difficult times like the pandemic? Ways to cultivate and support resilience. Dr. Vora explains what happens when we fail to process or articulate our feelings or avoid uncomfortable feelings. Addiction in adults is often a way to self-soothe or seek comfort. At times, parents should step back and allow their children to process and work through their problems. Sometimes, the big feelings people experience are physiological and avoidable. How do blood sugar dysregulation and hypoglycemia or high blood sugar and insulin resistance impact our feelings and behavior? How gut health pertains to our brain and anxiety. Why do we crave gluten and dairy? Blood sugar is critical to the functioning of the brain. Finding a balance between food addictions and orthorexia. The impact of synthetic hormones on our physiology and our mental and emotional health. Author of the book The Anatomy of Anxiety, Dr. Vora works as a psychiatrist in New York City, practicing what I would call “holistic psychiatry”, since she deals in the field of traditional medicine while bringings in all kinds of functional and health promoting strategies and behaviors into her work with patients. In this episode, you'll learn about the one thing that was the main driver behind Dr. Vora's major health decline (this incidentally was also what led to her health awakening) and the two different kinds of anxiety—what causes them, and how to effectively treat them. You will also hear about Dr. Vora's groundbreaking approach to understanding how anxiety manifests in the body and mind, which will give you a practical, effective perspective on how you can overcome it. Instead of thinking of the discomfort of anxiety as a pathology that must be labeled, Dr.Vora has reframed that discomfort instead as “a signal to heed.” Once you see anxiety from that viewpoint, you can truly reframe the term, and start seeing it as something that actually serves to alert us to the fact that something else is out of balance—in our bodies, our lives, our relationships, in the world. This anxiety, as you will hear Dr. Vora explain, is not harmful, but instead quite vital to our wellbeing, as it helps keep us focused on our goals and to recalibrate when we're out of alignment with our life's work.    TIMESTAMPS: Let's talk about anxiety. There are two kinds:  false anxiety and true anxiety. [01:12] In treating patients, Dr. Vora began to question the impact of medications. She is more interested in prevention. [4:30] Conventional medicine is not the answer to everything. [09:12] Ellen's medical training has brought her to her current practice of using lifestyle adjustments and other alternative methods. [14:23] Does she have to get off the insurance model since she practices alternative medicine? How did she transform how she is in the world? [20:12] Anxiety can often be traced to unrelated imbalances. One can transfer the feeling into purposeful action.  [28:28] What is the difference between true and false anxiety? {33:38] Medical education has been bought by the pharmaceutical industry. [36:49] There are so many things that affect mental health such as diet, lack of sleep, artificial light, inflammation, and so forth. [41:17] How does one get motivated to adhere to the ideal lifestyle recommendations the doctor suggests? [47:00] Do pharmaceuticals have a role in her practice? [51:12] Are you allowed to play with the placebo effect in today's medicine?
