The world must address pandemic threats urgently, says former CDC officer

"[The]cruel irony here [is] that the world cannot get its act together to address these threats … people are dying, animals are suffering, we're losing rainforest … these are all interconnected threats," Neil Vora tells me on this week's episode of the Mongabay Newscast, just a day after the World Health Organization (WHO) reported more than 80 deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo from an outbreak of the Ebola virus. Vora is a former U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) epidemic intelligence service officer who deployed to the DRC to combat Ebola. He says the current strain, the Bundibugyo virus, is particularly dangerous because there is no current approved treatment or vaccine for it. While neither this virus nor the Andes virus, a type of hantavirus that originated in Chile and Argentina and killed three people on a cruise ship, is likely to cause a pandemic, says Vora, he stresses member states of the WHO are unprepared to address a pandemic should one occur. According to Vora, the WHO could have achieved a pandemic agreement to better address the threats pandemics pose. But that fell short when nations failed to adopt a system to equitably share tools such as vaccines. " And now those discussions on the pandemic agreement have stalled, and days later, we have these two outbreaks of zoonotic viruses." Neil Vora is the executive director of the Preventing Pandemics at the Source Coalition. Please take a minute to let us know what you think of our podcast here. Today I'm really excited to share my conversation with psychiatrist and author, Dr. Ellen Vora. We dive into one of my favorite topics—anxiety—and explore it in a way that feels both grounding and empowering. Dr. Vora takes a holistic, mind-body approach to anxiety, focusing on getting to the root rather than just managing symptoms. As you'll hear throughout the conversation, there's a powerful parallel to how we experience anxiety around money—so often, it's not just about the numbers, but what's happening beneath the surface.   About Dr. Ellen Vora: Dr. Ellen Vora is a board-certified psychiatrist, acupuncturist, and the author of The Anatomy of Anxiety. She is known for her integrative approach to mental health, combining conventional psychiatry with functional medicine, mindfulness, and lifestyle-based interventions. Rather than viewing anxiety as something to suppress, her work helps people understand it as meaningful information—often pointing to imbalances in the body, mind, or environment. Her approach challenges the traditional medicalization of stress and offers a more empowering, human-centered way to think about mental health.   Connect with Dr. Ellen Vora: Website: https://ellenvora.com/ Instagram: @ellenvoramd Book: The Anatomy of Anxiety ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you loved this episode, please take a moment to follow, rate, or review Money Isn't Scary — it helps more women find these much-needed conversations. Today we are revisiting a powerful conversation from the With Whit archives with holistic psychiatrist Dr. Ellen Vora that still deeply resonates. In it, Dr. Vora unpacks the difference between "true" and "false" anxiety and how our bodies often hold the clues to what we're feeling. We get into how physical imbalances like sleep, hormones, and blood sugar can affect our mental health, and how learning to listen to our bodies can help us respond with more clarity and compassion. With so many of us navigating stress and uncertainty, this conversation feels more relevant than ever- and the perfect time to revisit. This episode is brought to you by HERS and Sam Edelman. I've always believed that healing starts with awareness — but this conversation with Dr. Ellen Vora took that belief to a whole new level. In this illuminating conversation, I sit down with Dr. Vora, a board-certified psychiatrist, acupuncturist, yoga teacher, and author of The Anatomy of Anxiety — and she's redefining what it means to truly care for our mental health. In this episode, she shares how her own health crisis and years in conventional psychiatry led her to a more holistic path — one that honors both science and soul. We explore the two types of anxiety she defines in her book — False (avoidable) and True (purposeful) — and how understanding the difference can completely transform your relationship with anxiety. Ellen explains how hormones shape our mood and perception, why modern life keeps us stuck in “all yang, no yin,” and how small shifts in sleep, nourishment, and nervous-system care can restore balance. This conversation bridges logic and magic, reminding us that true mental health isn't about fixing symptoms — it's about coming back into balance, reclaiming your wholeness, and trusting your inner wisdom.
