Tim Feldmann is the director of Miami Life Center, which he co-founded with Kino MacGregor and Matt Tashjian. He embarked on his yoga journey after a near-fatal accident in 1992 and is authorized to teach by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and R. Sharath Jois. With a professional dancer and choreographer background, Tim integrates extensive anatomy and meditation knowledge into his Ashtanga yoga teachings. Known for his humorous and profound teaching style, he travels extensively to share his expertise worldwide.Jesper met Tim back in Kovalam some twenty-something years ago. Yoga has been a very on-and-off thing in our lives, but our interest in pursuing a daily practice has grown over the last couple of years. You can even join a monthly live call to share your thoughts.  _________ Tim found his way to yoga after a catastrophic accident in Venezuela in 1992 interrupted his professional dancing career. He encountered Lino Miele in the late 1990's, who set Tim on the path to practising with Pattabhi Jois in Mysore. There he met his wife, Kino MacGregor, and in 2006 they founded the Miami Life Centre, where they continue to teach together to this day.  Tim shares openly about the fear he felt before practising with Jois, who even then had a reputation for fearsome physical adjustments. When Tim finally felt ready to practise with him (after completing Advanced A), he recalls feeling gratitude for the assists he received.  Since Karen Rain's revelations of sexual assault at the hands of Jois, Tim has had to come to terms with how his experience was at odds with that of the women Jois abused. He asks himself how he failed to notice, talking to Scott about how ‘crazy and amazing' those days in Mysore were, concluding that sometimes people ‘surrendered' at the expense of the safety of themselves and those around them.  Since opening the Miami Life Centre in 2006, Tim has moved his own teaching away from a hierarchical model and towards one that prioritises safety and inclusiveness. Having been confronted with the somewhat blasé attitude towards anatomy in the early days, he's relieved to see a more detailed and logical approach developing in recent years. He talks about the value and limitations of lineage and hierarchy - that structure can create clarity, but space to explore is essential. He talks about the ‘lineage holders' of Ashtanga yoga, and the nature of how knowledge is passed down. And finally, reflecting on the past couple of years, Tim concludes with how nothing is more important in life than being there for other people.  Tim is the co-founder and captain of the world-wide recognized Miami Life Center and of the newly opened Miami Yoga Garage - a new ambitious Shala and cultural house in Miami's fun Wynwood district. He has practiced yoga since 1994 and Ashtanga Since 1999. Authorized to teach by Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Jois he explores core concepts and modern boundaries of Patanjali's yoga teachings alike. #100: Creating Accessible Ashtanga Yoga with Kino MacGregor

I've always been vocal about my goals of making Ashtanga yoga more accessible, but I go even deeper at this Q&A with Yoga Alliance. I answer questions from yogis from all over who want to find out more about the Ashtanga lineage and what classes are like on OmStars and at the Miami Life Center. The practice of Ashtanga is hard, gritty, and anything but easy. So my focus is on inspiring students to keep getting on the mat every day, even when they feel physically (and sometimes emotionally) drained.  I put the spiritual practice of Ashtanga front and center. The traditions and lineage are integral to your practice. By inspiring students to develop their spiritual practice, I hope to empower them to take on more responsibilities. Currently, there is a lot of talk about what yoga teachers can do to make yoga more accessible, but that responsibility is shared with the student, too. It becomes our collective responsibility, especially now after the sexual misconduct in the Ashtanga yoga community, to rethink the power dynamics between student and teacher. What does this new yoga practice look like? And how will the guru evolve to meet students at equal footing? Because a student holds as much power on the yoga mat as a teacher, we now have the opportunity to share what we know and strengthen one another on our yoga journeys. This is how I approach my practice and the way I teach yoga. I answer a few questions about my teaching career, but I don't really think of myself as a yoga teacher. I am always, first and foremost, a yoga student. I love learning about this practice, its traditions, our lineage, and then sharing what I've learned with others who are just as passionate about their journey.  My recommendation to you and everyone out there listening who is eager to try Ashtanga yoga is - Spend as much time as a yoga student as possible. Immerse yourself in the experience and gobble up as much knowledge as you can. Yoga students hold the power of the practice because they are the ones who show up to class to put in the work. Without students, there is no yoga teacher, there is no guru, and there is no practice. The student's journey is where the magic of yoga happens, and I hope to share some of what I know and shine a light ahead of you to help you on your journey. #96: How to Balance the Path Between Happiness and Struggle

It's been a pretty intense week, and I want to catch everyone up with the changes that are happening. Change is never easy, and I am now facing a lot of the grief and sadness that comes about when things are ending.  We founded the Miami Life Center 15 years ago, and so many family members, friends, yoga students, and visitors put so much work into developing this space and this community. The reality of it all ending and everything changing hit me like a brick wall last week as we started to move things out of our South Beach location. The closing of our old location made me realize so many things, and I've become more aware of the instability around me. Now, just because someone practices yoga and meditation doesn't mean they don't have negative thoughts. Everyone has bad days, and ugly feelings of doubt and regret can creep into anyone's head. Yoga is a tool that can help you work through these feelings when they arise, but it doesn't stop them from bubbling to the surface.  What I've learned about myself through this experience is that those old habits and old patterns of thinking are so familiar and so comforting that it can be easy to walk down that path again. You aren't a failure just because you spiral into a negative headspace. Light and darkness are in a constant dance, and you can't have a good day without an obstacle (or two) to balance it out.  This balancing act between happiness and struggle is how we learn, and everything on this path is designed to make us stronger. It is not a sign of weakness to feel self-doubt, but a sign that you are headed in the right direction. As you hear my story, I invite you to observe the thoughts in your own mind and acknowledge the tint of your inner dialogue: is it positive, negative, or neutral? #92: The Intersection of Yoga, Fitness, Anatomy, and Healing with Leslie Kaminoff

When it comes to yoga, fitness, and anatomy, Leslie Kaminoff has seen it all. Just don't call him an expert. Because as any yoga student knows, the more you learn in this practice, the more you realize you just don't know.  Leslie started his yoga career down the street from Jane Fonda's first fitness studios in L.A. He was working at the Sports Medicine Institute when one of the studio instructors started teaching therapeutic yoga to physical therapists at the Institute. Leslie shares what it was like to have a front-row seat for this intersection of yoga and fitness in the West. He was in the right place at the right time and found himself on that first committee of the Yoga Alliance. Leslie helped set the standards that many yoga studios and health clubs use today to hire teachers and trainers. At the time, standardization was needed because the popular demand for yoga greatly outweighed the supply of experienced teachers. Today, our modern climate inspires us to ask: are hours really the way to gauge whether someone is qualified to teach yoga? Leslie breaks down the Yoga Alliance origin story, how these hourly standardizations came to be, and provides a new perspective for us to see where and how these Westernized expectations surrounding yoga came about. He also speaks to the effect of yoga on physical therapy and how the yoga community responded to injuries, asanas, and the path to healing. Teaching a therapeutic style of yoga that doesn't adhere to the sometimes strict rules of the asana practice took a bit of practice itself. Leslie had to learn a new way to speak to students that encouraged them to inquire about the sensation of the practice rather than setting some expectation of the sensation.  Of course, the nature of the asanas is to provide a framework for the student to see how and where their body fits into the pose. How else do you learn something new about yourself if you don't try a new physical position or style of breathing? However, the poses often look different for each person and learning how to teach individual students rather than the perfect asana sequence was key to Leslie's experience of becoming the therapeutic yoga teacher he is today.  I am so excited to have Leslie come and teach at the Miami Life Center. Having him teach an in-person class means so much to me. We have lost so much during this pandemic, but seeing a classroom full of yoga students in person is something I miss the most. Joseph Armstrong is an Authorized level 2 teacher of Ashtanga Yoga. He teaches yoga with feet planted firmly in tradition and gaze turned towards the future. His search for a more present and peaceful life first led him to the practice in 2008. A few years later he was in India, studying intensively. After finally overcoming a long struggle with addiction, Joseph began experimenting with Ashtanga Yoga. He understood quickly that the lineage was calling to him to deepen his practice. He underwent a 2 year apprenticeship program at the world renowned Miami Life Center, continuing his education under his teachers Tim Feldmann and Kino MacGregor. In 2016 he completed 2 months of study in Mysore under Sharath Jois. 2017 brought Joseph to Guatemala where he taught Mysore Style for over a year while also traveling and giving workshops in Europe and the Americas. 2019 brought him back to Miami and his yoga family at MLC. Joseph teaches yoga because attempts to do any and everything else ended disastrously. But when he finally devoted himself to his passion, he became an asset to himself and others. He hopes his practice allows him to be ever more loving and to exist gently.

Every once in a while on this show we like to pull the blinds down (or the pull the curtain away) and show you what it really sounds like at the Chai Stand gossiping on Gokulum High Street in India. Tim Feldmann is hilarious (unfortunately for him not quite Jewish) and shares a very similar sense of humor to Russell. The two of them create their own little giggling world together and we are delighted to share this hour exploring Tim's life with you! Tim appears to be a Dane. He comes from a nice, boring, Danish town that is unpronounceable to North Americans (believe us, we tried!) and he is a shining an example of how good and wonderful a boy can grow up to be when raised with loving parents. Tim is full of charm, and unlike most of our guests, had a childhood free of trauma or other secondary causalities. He became a dancer as he loved movement and was an energetic child, who had a fabulous mother that encouraged him in every way. His father, despite being an engineer, was astonished that his son got paid to work as a dancer in Australia, and thus, supported his dream wholeheartedly. However, after a fall of some 6 stories down a mountainside cliff, Tim found himself finally having to change things up and discovered yoga as an avenue for self healing. You do sometimes have to hit rock bottom, and in Tim's case, that was quite literal. Tim found that Ashtanga Yoga was a unique and interesting form and pursued it with hungry passion every since his first introduction. He was set on the yoga path by his first teacher Lino Miele and was Authorized to teach directly by the founder of the Ashtanga Yoga Method, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and his grandson, R. Sharath Jois. Tim's humorous, straight forward yet profound teaching style makes him a cherished teacher in the Ashtanga yoga lineage, traveling extensively throughout Asia, Australia, Europe and the Americas. He also founded the Miami Life Center with his wife Kino MacGregor, which continues to expand to this day! I’m taking a little inspiration from my Chat & Chai classes at the Miami Life Center for this special episode. Please tune in now for a special chat and a meditation that will help you reconnect with the innocence of your mind. Remember when you first started yoga? That beginner’s mindset is what we’re trying to get back to today.  The longer you practice, the more important it is to check back in with yourself and your beginner’s mind. Too often we come to the mat with an agenda - sometimes it’s to do a headstand, or maybe we want a deeper backbend, but when you come to practice with a plan in your head, you’re missing out on your moment to really connect.  That moment goes beyond the physical poses. Yoga is your chance to reconnect with your spirit and get back in touch with the deeper intention of the practice. Remember - yoga is an initiation of the heart.  The more we practice, and the more we learn about the physical practice and poses and bending, the further we stray from that excitement and wonder we felt that first day on the mat - our beginner’s mind. Yes, I love learning about yoga, but I also love how my yoga practice is a chance to unlearn all that I know.  When you come to the yoga mat, you are starting on a journey that will turn you into a totally new person, if you let it. In order to be re-invented, you have to acknowledge that - despite all you know - you really don’t know anything. Your spirit remains untouched by all that your mind knows, and your yoga practice is the rare moment where you have the freedom to spend time within the freshness and newness of the human spirit. This past weekend we had the honor of hosting Ty Landrum for a workshop at Miami Life Center. His love and understanding for the spirit of the practice and its expression through philosophy, the breath, movement and asana, was experienced by all those present. Good news, we recorded one of his talks for you! Tune in as he shares a mythical story he feels portrays the path of a contemplative practice. He presents it as a metaphor for the type of consciousness we are trying to uncover in yoga and immerse ourselves in. Training as a professional dancer, Tim Feldmann suffered from a major injury after falling off a mountain. Study different methods and techniques, he shares is the path to his recovery, walking again and how he came to Ashtanga yoga. After falling off a mountain while studying dance professionally, Tim was told that he should give up dancing, but he wanted to find a way to walk and dance again. Attending rehabilitation for two years, he studied under the Alexander Technique, improving his skills to walk again and apply the method to his everyday lifestyle. We also talk about Ashtanga yoga, and how Tim came to start his practice with it. He shares what the practice means to him not only from a mental view but also from the physical aspect of it. Many times we come into the practice of yoga as experts on all our problems or with an expectation of what the practice should be like. We come in with a hardened heart that says - this is how things should be, this is how I know myself. As we begin to inhabit the world we become conditioned to the ways of the world and lose the shimmer, innocence and joy we were born with. We feel beaten up by life and internalize difficult experiences. We believe we aren't good enough. And then we come to yoga and it's not easy to let go of all that. We believe we are only good yogis if... But then the practice of yoga begins to take root. We re-calibrate the mind and update the operating system. We recently had the pleasure of hosting Chase Bossart for a workshop at Miami Life Center on the teachings of The Bhagavad Gita, part of our month long course Ashtanga Practitioner's Intensive. This text along with The Yoga Sutras are crucial in guiding the path of a yogi. Held side by side, they compliment as well as contrast each other and we thought it would be interesting to dive into the concept of God in this regard. Listen in as Chase so skillfully presents the structures of The Yoga Sutras and The Bhagavad Gita and how and why God or Isvara fits in. Is it necessary to turn to 'God' on the path of the yogi? What is the role of a God in the yogi's mind? Tune in to scratch the surface of what these spiritual texts have to say. Chase is a personal student of TKV Desikachar since in 1991 with a B.A. in Eastern philosophy from Colgate University (1992) and a M.A. in Religious Studies & Indian Philosophy (1996) from University of California (thesis on Patañjali’s Yogasūtra). He lived and studied at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai/India 2003-2004. Yoga teaching has been Chase's sole occupation since 2003. He is a former Director of Therapy & Education at Healing Yoga Foundation with a private practice and an internationally traveling yoga therapist. In this first Yoga and Trauma panel discussion at  Miami Life Center, we gathered a group of professionals in conversation to lightly scratch the surface of this immense topic. Seated at the table are Anne Hurley- Trauma Psychotherapist, Dr. Kristin Jones- Doctor of Health Science and Mental Health Counselor, Dennis Hunter- Yoga and Meditation Teacher and trauma survivor, Adam Ottavi- Certified Rolfer and Somatic Therapist, Greg Nardi- ERYT-500 and Founder of Ashtanga Yoga Worldwide, and moderating the conversation is Natalia Vásquez- Founder of Heart in Brain Studios and trauma survivor. Through these various perspectives, we begin to define the meaning of trauma, its roots, and how yoga plays a role in assisting survivors along their path to full recovery. We discuss the importance of safety and communication between students and teachers in the practice and the need for authentic and trustworthy leaders within spiritual communities. These monthly classes with Kino MacGregor at Miami Life Center, have become a space for us to not only reconnect into the physical practice; but also become immersed in the philosophy, the theory of the practice and the meditative mind. In this episode, Kino talks about the appropriate attitude to bring to the mat. How do we show up on our mats? It should be something like the beginner's mind. When we live in the box of our knowledge, our hearts become hardened, as Kino explains in more detail. We must walk the path of the student with an innocence of mind, which is the essence of the yoga journey. Every yogi is on a path of initiation - an initiation into the heart. We need to remind ourselves again and again, each time we get on the mat, that we are here with an open heart to practice, not to showcase what we can do or how much we think we know. It a sort of pilgrimage Ashtanga Yoga Practitioners from all over the world make to connect with the source of the practice. In this episode of Chat & Chai: Yoga Talks from Miami Life Center, our Director Tim Feldmann touches upon the distractions that so many of us come up against in our practice. At the beginning, the practice seems exciting and easy to commit to, but what happens when we stick it out for the long run, through the ups and downs? It's common for distractions and disturbances to be present, which make it difficult to continue returning to the mat. Luckily for us, Patanjali knew this might happen to any spiritual seeker, so he gave us guidelines for recognizing them and overcoming them. Join Tim as he goes through the specific obstacles to practice as outlined by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras, going into an explanation for each. He uses a modern day application to help us understand what they look like in our lives and on the mat. He then goes into how to determine when these distractions have become a problem and what we can do continue moving forward with a clear mind.

Kino on The Notion of I Am: Talk and Meditation

Last month, Kino started off her class at Miami Life Center with a talk investigating this notion of I am we all seem to come up against. In order to understand the effect identifying with certain roles or stories has on us, Kino first touches upon why we have an inclination towards this grasping. Then going deeper into what this grasping to identify looks like, and how we allow certain identifies to define us and ultimately limit us. We become attached to this false sense of self, allowing it to define so much of our existence. If we are not these notions of what I am telling myself I am, then what am I? Tune in as Kino explains the spiritual practice of yoga as a path to break this bondage of I, in order to tune into our true nature. Since it is only through the experience of the practice that these lessons can begin to take root, Kino ends with a guided meditation focusing on how we can 'soften the edges of the I'. How can we crack open the ego of I am, to find more freedom, peace, and empathy towards one another.

This time were sharing with you an inspiring talk she gave to introduce the class and a seated guided meditation on the breath. She touches upon what embodiment means in the practice and how we can experience it through the body and breath, and move away from it through the mind. Shedding light on the reasons we step on our mat – to return to wholeness. The breath is a powerful tool to guide us down this path. Every emotion can be expressed through the breath and the practice gives us a way to determine where we are in every moment. Listen in as Kino explains these concepts in detail and how they can easily be applied to our everyday life. Kino is back on Chat & Chai: Yoga Talks from Miami Life Center for a talk she gave our students on the difficulty in maintaining a daily practice. In Ashtanga Yoga we are asked to practice 6 times a week, except moon days. Why is it so hard? What type of foundation must we establish to make this possible and allow our intentions to manifest in a real way? Maintaining a daily practice over a long period of time becomes possible when we approach the practice as a ritual of compassion towards ourselves. Coming on to the path of yoga, as Kino explains in this episode, is like making a U-turn in our lives. It’s a sort of paradigm shift. How do we know this U-turn moment is something were yearning for, or ready for? Being on the path can look different for everyone, but this U-turn is a defining moment for every sincere yoga practitioner. Once we’ve made this U-turn, what are we after in the practice? How does it change our relationship with the world around us and the world inside us? Listen in to learn why consistent practice over time, and the difficulties that come with it are necessary for these changes to take root in our lives and extend beyond the mat.

For this last episode in our series on the 8 limbs of Ashtanga Yoga according to Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, Natalia Vasquez talks to us about the last limb of Samadhi, or liberation. It is the final state in meditation or complete absorption. The eightfold path we've gone through is one of the paths prescribed for reaching this liberated state. Patanjali has provided us with a detailed map to this higher consciousness, by looking into the nature of the mind and how the mind can be transformed. This stage of Samadh is especially difficult to put into words and explain, since it's through experience that true understanding comes. Listen in as Natalia expresses her understanding of the theory of Samadhi presented in The Yoga Sutras. Natalia leads our Yin, Nidra and Restorative program at Miami Life Center. Her self-studying and self-loving approach to healing is carried through to her students. Her classes have become an integral part of MLC, serving as a beautiful compliment to the practice of Ashtanga Yoga. In this episode of Chat & Chai, Mark Linksman leads a discussion and practice on Pranayama – the 4th limb along the 8 limb path of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. With special guests Anthony Hazin, who goes into a scientific perspective of the practice, and Natalia Vasquez, MLC's restorative teacher, who leads us through a guided meditation to prepare us for the guided pranayama practice led by Mark. Join us for this part of the episode and practice along by finding a quiet and comfortable place to sit. Mark leads our pranayama program a MLC. A student of Iyengar, 20 years under Richard Freeman and Tim Miller, and many years of a daily practice of asana, pranayama and meditation, it is truly an honor to have him guiding us. He has a sincere love for the breath and the power it has to bring us back to ourselves. In his pranayama classes, a group of us sit in a circle and breath together. Like Mark always says, the energy we bring into the room is powerful. It keeps him going and inspires all who cross his path. The pranayama practice in this episode is a shorter version of what we do during his MLC classes. I had a chance to record this episode "live". And what a difference it makes! You can listen on  Stitcher -  I-Tunes   - Lybsin or click here if you are not sure Kino is one of those teachers that barely needs introduction because she is super famous, he has a quarter million subscribers to her YouTube channel, 679,000 followers on Instagram, 43,000 followers on Twitter and another quarter million (almost) Facebook likes to her page. She has also been on the cover of Yoga Journal many times. She is one of those very rare teachers who has gone very deep down the asana route, currently learning the 5th series of Ashtanga Yoga which is the equivalent of performing an athletic feast worth of many gold medals in the olympics, and she is a pleasure to talk to. What is Special About Kino Reading her book "Sacred Fire" her story feels like a fairy tale.  She caught the yoga bug very early on and started traveling to India in her early 20s.  Her ability in asana and her power to communicate and teach make her a great combination, so much so that she attracts massive numbers of students wherever she travels. But it was not all fairy tale. She also had to take a lot of heat from the "yoga police" which as you know by now, does exist.... I know... I can barely believe it myself but there is such a thing. She has been bashed and criticized for her outreach and for trying to expand the circle of people she reaches with her passion, which is yoga. Today the Miami Life Center is a vibrant store front on 6th street in South Beach.  It is always full of people and great energy and there are great instructors always present, with assistants.  They also have great workshops going on all the time. Claudia Altucher:        Hey, it's me, Claudia. Thanks for listening to the podcast. I'm really grateful to all of you who've been giving me some amazing feedback. I wanted to give you a little – very quick intro to this special episode. I actually interviewed Kino in person and that was the first time I did this, because I've been doing ridiculous hours of waking up to interview people who are in Asia, Japan, Bali, Australia, and then some other teachers that are not so far, but it was never really – even though that Skype face-to-face, sometimes you are able to do it, it was different to do it at the studio. And I was also in Miami, so I was practicing in the studio, and I thought that was something that was very interesting. We arrived about half an hour early, and opening the door, there was one of Kino's senior teachers. His name is Patrick Noland, and he recognized me from prior times that I've practiced at the Miami Life Center, and we started to talk, you know, sort of introduction. Kino was doing a final exam for some students on another room, so what I found curious that I wanted to share with you is the schedule that Patrick told me he had had on that day. And I had it in a recording on my phone, but I apologize, I can't put it here 'cause the quality is really bad and I didn't want it to affect you, but he told me that on that day, he had woken up at 4:00 AM to walk his dog and then he taught, at 6:00 AM, a Mysore class all the way to 8:30 AM, then he was gonna practice his own practice – he does something serious, something really advanced. Then he was gonna go and – no, then he was gonna teach a led class. So instead of Mysore, a led class is very – he actually does the count and all the students go at the same time, and then, after that, he was going to drive to the other side of town to give a one-hour private lesson. So I thought that was very eye-opening for all of us who are thinking, "Oh, I would really like to be a yoga teacher," because I think it may put things in perspective a little. I couldn't believe the level of activity that Patrick had on that day. But anyways, we chit-chatted for a little bit, and then Kino finished her class and exams, and we started talking. And so here she is, Kino MacGregor. Claudia Altucher:        Okay, so – yeah. Okay. So before we start, Kino, I just want to say that I'm a little jealous of you. [Laughter]  Actually, not a little, but a lot, and it happened because I started reading Sacred Fire, which is a book that it feels very confidential, like you tell a lot of little stories that are not in a proper, you know, Ashtanga book, and it felt like a fairytale, like a really good fairytale. So it's the good kind of envy, but – [laughs] – at the same time, it's envy. So – but I want to introduce you to my listeners although you don't quite need that much introduction, but Kino MacGregor is an international yoga teacher. She is the author of two books, The Power of Ashtanga Yoga and Sacred Fire, and you have another one coming up, which we'll talk about soon. She's also the producer of six Ashtanga yoga DVDs. She's the co-founder of Miami Life Center, and the founder of the Miami Yoga Magazine. Now, the amazing thing about her is her YouTube channel has almost five million views, her Instagram account has 514,000 followers, and she has almost 40,000 followers on Twitter. Amazing. Kino is one of the select group of people to receive the certification to teach Ashtanga yoga by its founder, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of India, and she was – you received this before the age of 30, which is an amazing accomplishment. Welcome to The Yoga Podcast, Kino. Kino MacGregor:       Thank you. Thanks for having me. Claudia Altucher:        I'm very happy that you not only joined me but you let me do it here in the Miami Life Center. You were just doing a final exam or something like that? Kino MacGregor:       There was a course, an intensive course, that we just wrapped up right before Christmas. Claudia Altucher:        Ah, okay, so that was the end of it and then – that was very interesting. We have some sounds of that, so… Kino MacGregor:       Yeah. Right. Claudia Altucher:        So as I said before, I'm a little envious of you. Yoga came so easy, in a way, and at the same time, not so easy. You were very young. You were 19 or so? Kino MacGregor:       I was 19 when I did my first yoga class, and it was not an Ashtanga yoga class; it was a Sivananda class, more focused on relaxation and sort of a restorative view of how to use the postures, and I did my first Ashtanga yoga class when I was 22 years old, and it was really then that I kind of committed to doing the practice more regularly. Claudia Altucher:        Right, and you said in this book that I find fascinating, Sacred Fire, that you were looking for every kind of exercise before that. You had done Zumba and aerobics, all kinds of things, but something clicked for you in the yoga right away. What would you say – what was it, do you think? 'Cause you went to a class and the instructor even said to you, "Do what you can," right? Kino MacGregor:       Yeah. My first Ashtanga yoga class, the thing that really sort of resonated for me was that the practice answered a searching, sort of a latent searching that I'm not sure I was aware of consciously. But when I did the practice, there was something that really settled inside of me, and it instinctively drew me back to keep practicing, and so that's really the first and probably most fundamental feeling to really go deeper into the yoga path. Claudia Altucher:        And then, at the age of 22, you find yourself in New York City, right? Kino MacGregor:       Exactly, yeah. Claudia Altucher:        And you were studying something in the university? Kino MacGregor:       Yeah, I moved to New York City after some years of sort of just partying and kind of losing yourself in youth and fun and this sort of thing, and I moved to New York City to join a Master's degree program from New York University, and I sort of thought, "Well, I'm gonna get my life back on track." That's sort of what I thought. I thought that I would go to graduate school and maybe get a Ph.D. and get some internships and sort of get a real job and that sort of thing. But when I moved to New York, what actually happened is that I joined a traditional Mysore-style class, and that, for me, really solidified my connection to daily practice. I never thought that I would do yoga every day. It's not something that I, "Oh, I'm gonna do yoga every day." Claudia Altucher:        I don't think anyone thinks that. Kino MacGregor:       No, yeah, I mean, some people are sort of all-or-nothing. Some people who are fitness-oriented people or they go to the gym every day or something like that, I never had any physical discipline before yoga, so it was never really like – I didn't have a daily fitness regimen or routine, not when I was growing up, or really anything. I would work out randomly or something like that. So when I moved to New York and I joined the Mysore-style class, the teacher, he said to me, "This class meets six days a week. You can come at 8:00." And there was no option to come three days a week or drop in or something like that. It was just sort of like, "You're here every day or you don't do it." So I came every day, and after my first week, I could barely move my arms, and after about a month, I had changed my sleep cycle, and after three months, I wanted to change the way that I was eating. It changed everything about my life 'cause now I had this thing I did every day in the morning, and it required me to make different lifestyle decisions and different lifestyle choices. And very quickly, after that first class, I got the inspiration to actually go to India, to go to Mysore. So I actually got that inspiration and I followed that dream, really, all the way to Mysore, to India, where I met ____, I met Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Claudia Altucher:        But before that, I even want to point out the teacher that said to you, "This meets six times a week," he's just no ordinary teacher either, right? [Laughs] Kino MacGregor:       Right, no, this was Govinda. His name was Russell at the time, so Govinda Kai, and – Claudia Altucher:        He's an amazing teacher. He's awesome like you are. Kino MacGregor:       He's really awesome. He's really, really awesome. Yeah, for sure. Claudia Altucher:        So it's amazing, and you said he directed you to some books on – you had some struggles with food, like I think every woman in the planet. I know I do. He directed you to some books on eating, one called Conscious Eating, was it? Kino MacGregor:       Yeah, for sure. I remember, after I had been practicing for maybe a couple of months, I remember looking at what I brought for lunch for my internship, and it was just this sort of hodgepodge of things, and I remember that dessert was Mentos, and I thought, "This doesn't really seem so healthy," and I kind of read the ingredients, and I was like, "What are even the ingredients in this?" It was like sugar and Red No. 5 and Blue No. 2 and Yellow No. 20, and I thought, "That doesn't seem really good for me," and I went to my yoga teacher and I said, "What recommendations do you have for how to eat in a correct yoga lifestyle?" And he said, "Well, you could try to read this book called Conscious Eating. So I read that book and it really changed the way that I thought about things, and one of the most important takeaways from Conscious Eating was Gabriel Cousens, he sort of did this research, they cited this statistic where he said that if we took all of the grain that feeds the livestock for all of the animals that are raised for meat production and consumption and we took that grain and we fed that to people, then world hunger would end today. Claudia Altucher:        Wow. Kino MacGregor:       So if we just simply redistributed that grain, then all the people who are starving in underdeveloped countries and all the people who are homeless and starving in our own countries, we would be able to feed them all, and I thought – Claudia Altucher:        Wow. Kino MacGregor:       I just really thought there was no moral and ethical argumentation for eating meat on even on that level. I care about the environment and I care about doing the right thing morally and ethically. And so pretty much after I read that paragraph, I pretty much woke up the next day and made the choice to vegetarian. Claudia Altucher:        Wow, radically, just like – and you haven't come back to eating meat ever? Kino MacGregor:       No. Claudia Altucher:        Wow, and you're fine? You never miss the protein or the – Kino MacGregor:       Well, I don't – Claudia Altucher:        I mean, you do some pretty intense yoga moves. Kino MacGregor:       Yeah. [Laughs] Yeah. I mean, I don't miss the protein. I make a concerted effort to eat the vegetarian sources of protein, and if I'm feeling really depleted, like if I'm doing a lot of asana, I'm doing a lot of teaching, I make sure to maybe take a protein shake or something like that, that's gonna help create sort of a balanced approach to nutrition. In the beginning, I really wasn't into that. I just kinda stopped eating meat, just kinda ate whatever for a little while, but I mean, there's a lot of argumentation about which is more health-related issue, and I really think that's a personal decision that you need to figure out between you and your nutritionist or your doctor or something like that based on every individual's health needs, 'cause some people have serious health concerns that maybe they need to eat a particular food or even a particular meat in order to sort of save their life, which is completely acceptable, but I don't have anything like that. Claudia Altucher:        Right. Kino MacGregor:       I feel really good eating the vegetarian diet. I try to do the extreme version, where I was vegan for a while, and I've tried to be raw vegan for a while, and that was really extreme, and I did not feel so healthy. Claudia Altucher:        It's hard. Kino MacGregor:       Yeah, it was really difficult and I really felt sort of – I don't know – a little too restrictive. It felt a little bit almost like an addiction on some level for me. Other people do it and they don't feel like that, but I did. And so you asked me if I ever miss the protein. I don't miss protein, like, I haven't eaten meat for so long that even when I see it, it kind of – I start to think about it and makes me physically uncomfortable when I think about what that was and what that came from. Like, that was a being and it had a life, and then now it's sitting there, cooked, you know, like your thigh muscle was once attached to you and then it would be cooked and served to someone. Kind of trips me out. But what I do miss – and this is gonna sound completely random – what I do miss sometimes is the fun experience of it, you know, like a community experience of not having to be like, "Oh, do you have a vegetarian option?" or, "Do you have this?" or, you know, or you walk by and you – like, on the 4th of July in the United States and you smell barbecue. You know, barbecued vegetables also smell good, but when you smell barbecued meat and that sort of thing, none of those smells bother me, but there's a community aspect that I think slowly is starting to shift, but 15 years ago, when I kinda made that choice or 14 years ago when I made that choice, it was really sort of like a flag in the North Pole, sort of staking out new territory. Claudia Altucher:        Wow. Kino MacGregor:       And there's more options and you're sort of less ostracized for making those choices now than maybe before. Claudia Altucher:        Than back then, yes. And so is it true, then, when you got to India for the first time, I believe you were 22 or something? 23? You had no hair? Kino MacGregor:       Yeah. So one of the things that I did in my first year of practice is, when I was practicing, it seemed like this was the first time that I really began to question all the choices that I'd made up until then. Before yoga, again, I had no physical discipline. I was either an academic, or when I wasn't studying, I was intensively partying. So I sort of had this party on the weekends, study during the week, and somehow it all managed to balance itself out.   Claudia Altucher:        Typical New Yorker. Kino MacGregor:       Yeah, typical Miami Beach too, you know, Miami Beach. Kino MacGregor:       Yeah, something more typical East Coast, something like that. So what I did was, slowly, I realized, "Well – " so I was looking at my clothes and I thought, "Well, who am I when I wear these clothes? Is this me or am I trying to put on – am I trying to be the party girl or am I trying to be the studious girl or am I trying to be this girl or that girl?" So I gave away almost all my clothes and then I used to have so many different colors of hair. I used to have light blue hair, red hair, and then I had orange hair and strawberry-colored hair. I used to have all these crazy colors. This week on The One You Feed we have Kino MacGregor. We interviewed Kino after one of her weekend yoga retreats that she held in Columbus. We talked upstairs in a loft above the meeting space. She was warm, engaging and wise. She is an international yoga teacher, author of two books, producer of six Ashtanga Yoga DVDs, writer, vlogger, world traveler, co-founder of Miami Life Center (www.miamilifecenter.com) and founder of Miami Yoga Magazine (www.miamiyogamagazine.com). Three years later, she joined Govinda Kai's Mysore-style classes in New York City and became a dedicated Ashtanga yoga practitioner. After seven months of traditional Ashtanga practice Kino traveled to Mysore, India to meet her true teacher, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (“Guruji”). Upon her return she began real self-practice by practicing alone and devoting herself entirely to the study and teaching of Ashtanga yoga. After seven years of consistent trips to Mysore, at the age of 29, she received from Guruji the Certification to teach Ashtanga yoga and has since worked to pass on the inspiration to practice to countless others.
