If you're a fan of Taylor Swift, it won't have escaped your notice that the singer was back on tour this year across the United States. And what a tour it was! Fans were desperate to attend, and prepared to pay from $49 to $499 for the privilege, according to face value ticket prices quoted by Stylecaster.com. Meanwhile, resale ticket prices were in the thousands. If that seems a lot, then you should bear in mind that the cost of live entertainment has been rising due to what's known as funflation. It's a mix of “fun” and “inflation”, and economists say it's caused by a growing demand for events like Taylor Swift concerts or live sports. How are people able to afford this extra spending? Does the same go for other days out, apart from concerts? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: Are gas cookers dangerous? "I'm incredibly persistent. And I have a pretty high threshold for being uncomfortable. And that's definitely what I credit my success with," says Laney Crowell, who founded the natural, clean beauty brand Saie, which is a Sephora staple and viral sensation. But Laney never thought she'd start a beauty brand. She was the assistant beauty editor at Lucky magazine (and also had stints at ELLE and StyleCaster), she went through seven rounds of interviews (!!!) to be Anna Wintour's assistant, and then started her own blog, The Moment. Saie Beauty was born out of her modest but loyal following and has grown into a clean-beauty darling. The brand has nearly tripled its business in the US from 2022-2023, and in 2023, Saie's social community grew 134% year-over-year. Plus, there are more than 2,000 ingredients Saie refuses to use in their products. On today's episode, Laney talks about the importance of action (even if you don't have all the answers yet), whether or not she experiences imposter syndrome (the answer might surprise you) and the importance of having "expanders" in your career. AI has entered the chat in a BIG way this year, but what's just tech hype and what's actually useful to you as a business owner? Jasmine Garnsworthy, creator of Female Founder World, debriefs her personal use case of how 3 of her favorite AI tools - including Chat GPT - make it possible for her scrappy team of two to sustainably publish large volumes of content AND plan in-person events all over the U.S. - all while retaining their brand originality and content quality. Having previously led editorial for mega media brands like POPSUGAR and Stylecaster, I loved Jasmine's honest hot takes on how AI is impacting the future of content - and why more women - especially entrepreneurs - need to participate. This conversation is equal parts thought-provoking as it is practical, with Jasmine sharing very specific examples of how you can apply these 3 tools to accelerate your content game, without a steep tech learning curve. In episode sixty six of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts talks to the founder and CEO of Saie, Laney Crowell. There are very few people who have experienced the the media’s shift to digital in the same way Laney Crowell has. Laney was, quite literally, at the epicentre of the change. Upon graduating from college, Laney moved to New York to pursue her dream of working in magazines. After working at both Lucky and Elle, Laney became aware of the direction in which fashion and beauty were heading, and subsequently took a role at digital publication StyleCaster as it launched in 2008. The success of that launch led to Estee Lauder head hunting Laney and, quite literally, presenting her with a list of roles asking “Which one do you want?” She then became Executive Director of Online Global Communications for Estee Lauder, and was responsible for the launch of all of the brand’s social media channels and influencer marketing department. After five years at Estee, Laney left and launched her own her blog, The Moment, focusing on clean beauty. Listening to feedback from her growing audience, and drawing on her own experience, Laney realised there was a space in the market for a clean colour cosmetics brand that felt fun to use but also really performed. Saie launched only 18 months ago, and in that time the brand has won over 10 prestigious beauty awards and is now stocked in some of the world’s largest beauty retailers, including Sephora, Goop and Cult Beauty. In this conversation, Laney shares why she feels growing pains are both necessary and unavoidable, the difficulties she faced when raising funds for the brand, and how chasing an editor down the street led to her first industry role. In December 2020, I had the honor and distinction of finally graduating with my master’s degree from LIM College in New York City. My program lasted a year and a half. And a lot changed in that short period because of the pandemic, along with life changes and stress. However, I am consistently asked if getting a Master’s is something that you even should consider, and if so, what are some steps you should take to achieve your goals. I want to first preface this by saying that nobody can decide for you when it comes to your education. My mother and father instilled the values of education in me as a child. I learned later on that I suffered from extreme anxiety and stress, especially when it came to tests and tight deadlines with multiple courses. When I graduated from Howard University, I wanted to make sure that going back to school was the decision that I wanted for myself, not a decision I made for somebody else. That being said, I waited, and I’m so thankful that I did because it was ultimately the best experience for me. With my master’s in hand, I am eyeing additional educational opportunities, whether that is an MBA program or going and pursuing my Ph.D. However, if you are considering returning to school or possibly going back for your master’s or higher education during this time, there are a few things that I think you can consider. On today's podcast episode, Jamé sits down with none other than one of her major role models and "friend" (in the words of the talent themselves), Vanessa K De Luca. At the time of this recording, Essence Communications was under fire for an article published on Medium that delved into toxic workplace structures and the lack of safe spaces for Black women in corporate America. As companies and institutions have fought to continue to expand DEI initiatives specifically for BIPOC audiences, these conversations are more critical than ever. About Vanessa K. De Luca: Vanessa K. De Luca is a creative leader, driven by finding innovative ways to tell human-centered stories, guide new conversations, and grow brands. She currently serves as Editor In Chief of ZORA Magazine by Medium. In its first year, the magazine has grown to half-million page views per month, with a combined social media following of nearly 50K. Most recently she served as the Editor-in-Chief of ESSENCE magazine. In this role she oversaw the editorial vision and content creation across all platforms, including the magazine, digital, social, video and live experiences. In addition, she developed editorial concepts for new initiatives including video series and TV partnerships, e-learning platforms, e-commerce and licensing, podcasts and special events. Prior to this, her background focused on content strategy at publications such as Glamour and Life. Above all, her greatest satisfaction comes from storytelling and feeding her insatiable curiosity. As a trusted leader in all of her roles, she can assess the market, ideate new ways to achieve growth, build and cultivate strong teams, and reinvent a brand. Meg and Komie Vora- are ecopreneurs, the co-founders and designers behind Delikate Rayne (DR)- an award-winning, ethical, eco-friendly, cruelty-free women's label that produces in made to order/limited quantities to ensure zero waste whenever possible. The Vora sisters are disturbing the fashion industry by being a voice for the voiceless, empowering other females to go after their passion and pushing boundaries as brown creatives. The Vora sisters are first generation born and raised in the USA. They are going against the grain- forgoing their traditional cultural and gender expectations, by using their upbringing (Jain + Hindi roots plus born & raised vegetarian- now vegan) alongside their adoration of animals, to create green luxury- definitive and progressive vegan designs with a purpose into existence. DR also serves as a platform to bring awareness to the many overlooked issues in fashion including sustainability, cruelty and ethics. Plus making compassion cool by redefining luxury through changing the preconceived notions of what "lux" is. They also curate a conscious sanctuary through DR Diary which focuses on and educates about vegan/sustainable fashion, beauty, food, travel, wellness, mindfulness & more for your higher self. The Vora sisters had no formal industry experience or contacts, but their willingness not to conform to others expectations outweighed their fears and obstacles. Through their unstoppable drive and determinism to follow their desires, they set out to do whatever they could to make their dream a reality. What's particularly interesting about the Vora sisters is turning the things that they were once alienated and made fun of for while growing up resulted into making a remarkable impact later in their life. As a result, the sisters have become one of the pioneers of the kind fashion movement and are leading examples of how their unconventional upbringing and values led them to discover their passion which ultimately led to uncovering their purpose which is now channeled through the creation of Delikate Rayne. To date, the sisters and their company were on the front page in both digital and print of Colombia based Be Vegan Magazine and India West. Other notable interviews/features include: Forbes, NBC, Miss Bish, Galore, The Zoe Report, WWD, E! Online, The Los Angeles Times, StyleCaster, BuzzFeed, VegNews, Sakara, The Hindustan Times, Cheddar, Business Rockstars, The Orange County Register and many more. In addition, the Vora sisters have been guests on several podcasts, TV shows, radio segments and conferences/panels. The sisters have also conceptualized and served as creative directors for multiple fashion for good projects including PETA USA, NYLON magazine, PETA India, The Animal Hope and Wellness Center and others. They are also guest writers/features for 3 books on vegan style, living, and green business acumen. Today, Meg and Komie have built Delikate Rayne into a leading platform of bringing awareness all while paving the way for other compassionate companies. In this episode Yoga Is Vegan's Holly Skodis and Meg and Komie Vora discuss the following:Growing up in a Hindi and Jain household and how Ahimsa entered into their lives. On this week's episode of the podcast, Jamé discusses her three tips on how the fashion industry can finally get itself back on track. "But when diversity is done right, the return on investment is significant. Companies with above-average diversity in management produced “innovation revenue”— or the share of revenues generated from enhanced or entirely new products or services — that was 19 percentage points higher than that of companies with below-average leadership diversity." – Vogue Business As always, if you liked this episode, leave us your reviews or ratings on Apple Podcast, OR just share this episode on your social media and tag a friend. Nuestra Palabra; Latino Writers Having Their Say broadcast on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, with host Tony Diaz. Today we focus on 2 Latinas changing the world through their brilliance and art. One is stars in a new film about the struggles of our undocumented community, and the other is making a national impact telling our community's stories through classic and new media. We first talk to Erica Muñoz, who stars in the film LONG GONE BY by acclaimed filmmaker Andrew Morgan and Untold Films. This film portrays the impossible realities of undocumented Latino immigrants. It is currently playing on HBO. In the second half of the show, We interview Jessica Hoppe, a New York-based writer and social media strategist. Former Lifestyle Editor at StyleCaster, she founded Nueva Yorka. She has been tackling the challenges of alcoholism and recovery during the COVIED19 lockdown, esp. for the Latino community. We are recording remotely and sometime weeks ahead of our air dates. This makes it complicated to address breaking news; however, we must address the current death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota. That is an on-going and rapidly changing situation, so facts sand analyses will change day to today. However, today's show is about unleashing our voices, the power of art to heal, and changing the world. Sudden acts, such as the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis streets by those assigned to serve and protect us, are examples of racial bias coming to a dangerous boiling point. We must address the layers that lead to that. That is shaped by the inequities of the educational system in black and brown communities. That has been overlooked for too long. African American and Latino youth must receive the best education this nation has to offer. And sharing their stories, cultivating their imaginations, and edifying their spirts play a vital role in that. Social injustice is hard to quantify, easy to hide, and profoundly shapes our community's confidence, tranquility, and peace of mind. Those factors are also vital to thrive. George Floyd grew up in Houston. He attended our schools. He walked our streets. We feel he and his family's loss, and we will continue to unite to uplift the voices of our communities. The mission of Nuestra Palabra since it was founded in 1998 has been to address these issues. We must be humanized and imagined and treated as intellectuals capable of great thoughts and great deeds. We have walked with you on this path for 22 years, and we will continue. Thank you. We are in pledge drive. There are no regular shows about our art, culture, and politics on commercial television or radio. KPFT hosts a monopoly on community cultural capital. We answer to our community. Please budget a donation to KPFT, and make it support of Latino Politics and News today. Call 713.526.5738. Or visit www.kpft.org. We have a monetary goal, a goal for new members, and a goal for online donations. We thank you in advance for helping us to meet and shatter those goes. Thanks to our crew for donating their cultural capital to the show: Leti Lopez Rodrigo Bravo, who mixed the show remotely Claudia Soler Alfonso, MD. Jesse Aranda Comer Laurie Flores Stefano Cavezza Al Castillo I'm happy to join you every Tuesday from 2 pm to 3 pm for Latino Politics and News, here on 90.1 FM KPFT. That's followed by Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say at 6 pm. And I also get to see you on the political talk show What's Your Point on Fox 26 Houston, Sundays at 7 am. This is Tony Diaz with Latino Politics and News.
Jess Wilkins is a friend of the podcast. She's also a friend of your host that's been keeping her company from afar during a global pandemic. Never more than a "hey friend" text away, Jess joins the podcast as its first-ever recurring guest to discuss topics that have been coming up for us during this socially distant time. We dive deep into quarantine beauty, self care, street harassment, and underpants. There's a lot happening, get in here. Post-recording update from Jess re: Static Nails: "Nail review: Press on nails are great for now but they will never be as perfect a fit as professionally done acrylics. There are nail sites that allow you to measure your nail bed and get more of a custom fit, but as kind of a lazy bitch who is in quarantine, I shan't be doing all that mess. With that being said, Static Nails are perfectly fine if you like a more subdued nail design and length. Tres She nails were a better fit, again not perfect, but better and they have more fun tacky bitch long nails which I enjoy. So as a matter of tacky preference, I'm rocking with Tres She."Jess' NewsletterJess' Instagram Jess' most recent work on Stylecaster, Embracing Grown Woman WeightProducts mentioned in this episode: Anastasia Brow PomadeSmall Face RazorsLe TushMegababe Thigh Chafe StickTarget SheetsBoy Smells Candles shanisilver.comShani on InstagramA Single Serving Podcast Facebook Group*Some links above are affiliate links. I’m honored to bring you this Season Four finale episode of the Mother’s Quest Podcast with two special guests and dear family friends, transgender model, activist and writer Corey Rae and her talented and trailblazing mother, Judy Blank. Corey is a 26-year-old activist, consultant, model, speaker and writer who shatters stigmas surrounding the transgender community. She was born transgender in the 1990’s and started her physical transition when she was 15 years old with the unwavering support of her mother Judy. Shortly after, Corey became the world’s first openly transgender girl to be crowned Prom Queen, a story in production for a feature film titled QUEEN, which Corey is Executive Producing. As a stylist, designer and creator of hand-carved jewelry, with over 30 years of experience, Judy’s professional skills have taken her across the industries of television, music, and photography. Her intuitive detail-oriented approach to hairstyling and personal style consulting has supported hundreds of individuals to feel good about themselves and make meaningful lifestyle changes. In this episode, Corey and Judy share, for the first time together, their mother daughter account of how they blazed a trail in Corey’s transgender journey, telling stories spanning from Judy’s standing up to Corey’s kindergarten teacher, who wanted to stop her from dressing as a girl during dress-up time, to supporting Corey through her gender affirmation surgery at age 19. Corey also recounts her evolution from living “stealth” for five years after her surgery, when no one knew she was transgender, to coming out publicly in 2016 through her first blog post on her site CoreyRae.com, titled, "Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself.” Since then, Corey has become a strong voice in helping others that struggle with gender identity, the transition process, or coming out and has actively shared her personal stories and advice on her blog, on a monthly column on StyleCaster.com, in publications like Vogue, Cosmopolitan and People magazines, and at events like the MAKERS Women's Conference. She’s currently the new campaign model for the beauty subscription brand, IPSY, and had what I call an epic snapshot moment posing with her mother in front of one of her LA billboards, a photo we used for the podcast art. This conversation had me in tears many times. I was moved by how Judy transformed her childhood experiences of being bullied into fuel for becoming a rock solid ally for her child, how her experience raising a transgender daughter when few resources and knowledge existed, sparked a deep desire to support other families and their children so they don’t have to feel alone, and how, after years of helping Corey become her authentic self, Judy is now experiencing her own rebirth after a challenging divorce. Recording this conversation live in a recording studio on the eve of my 48th birthday and the birthday of the Mother’s Quest Podcast, felt like the representation of everything I hoped the podcast would be when I created it three years ago: a space for transformative, inspiring conversations that invite all of us to live more fully. I hope you’ll listen to this episode with an open heart and mind and say “yes” to Judy and Corey’s challenge to “truly listen to our children,” to embrace them, and help them grow into the fullest, most authentic expression of who they are. Much appreciation, P.S. This is the last episode of Season Four and I'll be taking a break through the end of January. Come on over to the Mother's Quest Facebook Group, if you're not there yet, to stay connected until the podcast returns! Can't wait to bring you more inspiring conversations in 2020. Turmeric has been in the news for its surprising effectiveness to manage inflammatory issues and arthritis pain. However, not all turmeric supplementation is the same! Turmeric Boost contains BCM-95 which is a patented form of whole turmeric that helps to address the absorption issue by providing a trademarked formula with 700-900% better absorption in human clinical trials. In addition, it doesn’t require black pepper to be absorbed which can be a sensitivity for some patients. We added medium chain triglycerides (MCT) to BYWG Nutrition’s Turmeric Boost, which is a fat that encourages even better absorption as well. Once again, no fillers, no wheat, no gluten, no diary – just value, quality and effectiveness. For the entire month of July if you use this code JulyTurmeric (case sensitive) you will receive 10% off this incredible anti-inflammatory aid. .fusion-button.button-133 {border-radius:25px;}Order Turmeric Boost.fusion-image-frame-bottomshadow.image-frame-shadow-245{display:inline-block}.element-bottomshadow.imageframe-245:before, .element-bottomshadow.imageframe-245:after{-webkit-box-shadow: 0 17px 10px rgba(0,0,0,0.4);box-shadow: 0 17px 10px rgba(0,0,0,0.4);}BYWG's Product of the Month We’ve been a huge fan of Butcher Box for years. What the Internet has to say: This article from StyleCaster brings us 31 FREE date ideas. From exploring free activities in your area, to planning fun get together's with friends, there are certainly some creative ideas worth trying here. What Jen and Jill have to say: We like tip #8, which is enjoying a beach day - this can be done inexpensively and even in land-locked areas by finding a nearby lake with a bit of nice shoreline! Tip #13 recommends visiting an open house, which we definitely think is a fun way to spend an afternoon. Jill has taken this a step further to recommend boat and RV show rooms :) We agree with tip #25 which recommends playing old school video games even those least interested in video games can get on board with pacman!! One of our favorite ideas was #5 which is geocaching - the adult (but still child friendly) version of a treasure hunt! PLUS this is how Travis proposed to Jen!! (aww ;)) We don't recommend #15 Messy Twister - unless chocolate is involved. What the Internet has to say: This article from The Krazy Coupon Lady lists 23 cheap and free date ideas. There are some great tips on ways to get high end items/services at a fraction of the cost, and links to websites to start planning your own romantic dates and getaways. What Jen and Jill have to say: We like that this article listed frugal date ideas in addition to free date ideas - there should be money in the budget to go out, but we certainly do not always need to spend top dollar! #5 cook together - we agree that this can be a great way to bond, create a new experience, and work side by side. We like idea #14 which gives ideas on getting cheap tickets to local sporting events. Because there's so much baseball (Plus minor leagues!) We love that this article recommends playing together, Tip #21 suggests playing outside - we like frisbee, badmitton, volleyball, or simply playing 'catch'! - Check out tip #4 which recommends groupon for purchasing couples massages - this is a great way for a luxury date on a budget! #16 go to a 'you-pick' farm - look into farms in your area allowing you to pick and pay for what you have harvested. This is a nice "two for one" date in that you can enjoy time at the farm, AND go home and make something with your bounty! BILL OF THE WEEK - If you want to submit your bill of the week visit frugalfriendspodcast.com/bill to leave us a bill Thanks so much Jenna for sharing your frugal tips! We love to learn new ways to save on gym costs - and what a great date idea to do a yoga class with your significant other! General Rules to Live by and Other frugal date ideas: Jill - Invest in something small that will provide multiple enjoyable and memorable dates (i.e. small motorized raft for a summer-times worth of boating and picnics!) Explore yard sales and thrift stores together, with a set spending limit in mind Work on a project together, or volunteer together Jen - Combine something you have to do with your partner. Running, Don’t do something free that will cause you to spend money elsewhere (ie. taking a walk and ending up buying a $4 coffee, just bring your own.) Today’s guest, Clarissa Silva developed a technique, Your Happiness Hypothesis (c), based on her research and practice that provides evidence-based solutions to address some of the suboptimal relationship challenges that are occurring in today’s tech-driven dating world. Her truth was that relationships have become much more complicated these days. Here’s what we covered: -The dating paradox, how there is so much choice with online dating, swiping, stoping on shining objects and more. -She walked me through some of the modern dating terms of which I was unaware. -How technology intersects with self-esteem and relationship satisfaction (this was fascinating!) and how people create double consciousness! -We got into vanity validation, device dependency and what people want vs what people need. -Why she doesn’t believe in self-love and why she believes we should create our own equations and algorithms that deconstruct “the ideal partner list.” If you’re someone who’s out in the world dating, this will be really useful for you and if you are just curious what it’s like out there – you’ll learn a ton in this episode. Enjoy! xo, E About Clarissa Silva: Clarissa Silva is a Behavioral Scientist, Researcher, and Relationship Coach with 17 years of experience in mental health, behavioral science, and public health. In this conversation we dive into so many nuggets — from getting your dream internship (she interned for Redbook Magazine while she was a student at Arizona State), how she transitioned into freelance from her work in the corporate world, how to know if entrepreneurship is right for you, when to know it’s okay to be a “yes man” + how to bounce back from the inevitable rejections we all will face. Grab your notebook + a pen because you’ll want to take notes for this one, babe. _________________________________________________ Audree López is a NYC-based fashion stylist, freelance fashion editor at StyleCaster.com, industry consultant and manages a fashion and lifestyle blog called Simply Audree Kate. The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #196 ~Subscribe to The Simple Sophisticate: iTunes | Stitcher | iHeartRadio | YouTube "Style is a simple way of saying complicated things." —Jean Cocteau With the collections for Fall 2018 being revealed this month, I am always on a treasure hunt to find unique and worthwhile takes on the classics. At the same time, I am reminded as the trends shift each and every season of the benefits to adhering to a signature style that complements the individual wearing the clothes rather than the individual bringing applause or attention to the trend du jour. Much of how I have narrowed in on my own style and what has been the muse for simply luxurious style has been shaped by what I have read, observed and learned from French, especially Parisian women. Now, don't get me wrong, there are brilliantly stylish people around the globe, and the classic, effortless approach is not something only seen in Paris. However, the French have claimed it, owned it and demonstrate it regularly. Why? Well, put simply, it works and transcends years and decades of infinite trends that have been paraded down the runways. Today I'd like to share with you 10 style and beauty lessons I have learned from the French along my own journey of discovering my signature style and how to approach shopping as well as dressing each day regardless of the season. Some have been standing principles of the simply luxurious approach and others are new to me as well in the past couple of years. However, all of them work and enable you to look your best. 1. Less make-up, but still some make-up The best face to present to the world is your face. Less hiding what your visage is and more showcasing its beauty. Beginning with your skincare regimen, well-hydrated skin will always offer a palette to be enhance ever so slightly, and at the same time, hardly at all. Choose a primer, the proper hued concealor, tinted moisturizer and subtle eye makeup. Choose one feature to bring to the forefront — your lips, your eyes or your cheeks and simply brighten the rest. ~8 Ways to Create Glowing Skin, episode #13 2. Rock the flat Heels are nice, but heels have their time and place. Flats, whether ballet or boots are smart, versatile and comfortable. And we must not forget, stylish. Purchase well made designs, make sure they fit your foot and wear them for years. 3. Trends? No thank you. If we are busy chasing down trends, we do not have the ability to hone our signature style. And while discovering our signature style takes time, once we do discover it, the shopping is simpler and less frequent. Whereas when we chase trends, we are endlessly shopping and constantly shelling out money. Remember, let your uniqueness shine. No else will have precisely your style, so you will have do the work of getting to know yourself, your body, skin tone and the most enjoyable, what you love to wear which makes you feel your most confident. ~10 Tips to Evolve into Your Signature Style 4. Neutral color palette Neutrals are not just beige, so don't worry. Remember, start with an understanding of your skin tone and work from there. Certain colors can be neutral for you as well. Navy, for example. And even prints can be neutral and easy to mix and match with other colors in your wardrobe - polka dots or leopard, for example. Shopping for neutrals and keeping them in your closet enables your items to endure as what you purchase down the road will still have the opportunity to pair with what you already own. 5. Fewer clothes, better quality Cost per wear. Invest in high priced items if they are well-made with quality fabrics and are classic pieces rather than trends. And most important, you like the item and it fits well (remember to tailor as needed). Less frequent shopping and in the long run, less money spent. 6. Lace over cotton (when it comes to undergarments) The French and lingerie. Wear beautiful lingerie each day for you and for you. Yes, I repeated myself on purpose. In the United States, some brands would have us believe that it is what we look like to others in our lingerie, but rather it should be how our lingerie makes us feel. After all, we are the one's wearing it and when we feel comfortable we will be comfortable and more confident. Whether it is going about errands, hopping on a plane or going on a date. ~Why Not . . . Create a Lingerie Capsule Wardrobe? 7. A luxury investment handbag Quality accessories make a statement, and a well-made handbag (no exterior label is needed to show the world what you own) completes a look, enables the woman to keep her life and business organized and tucked away all the while going about her business. 8. Find a Versatile Trench "Wear it on the weekends with jeans, over gowns to formal events, layered with a fur stole when the weather gets colder, over your shoulders during the spring—the possibilities are endless." —Leah Bourne I am new to this idea, but after reading Leah Bourne's piece for Stylecaster, I could not agree more. Choose a quality trench, one that is the right length for your body that can be worn for day, evening or play. Choose a color and fabric that aligns with your signature style and make it your go-to coat nearly, if not the entire, year round. ~The Perfect Trench is Personal 9. Trust stripes A broken record I am when it comes to stripes. Wear them when it comes to tee shirts, where striped sweaters, striped dresses and even blouses. Stripes are a stunning neutral inspired by the French marinére or Breton top, and as was shared a couple of weeks ago, their versatility makes them a wise and savvy choice. ~11 Brands for French stripes 10. Find your signature style and stick to it "Parisian fashionistas develop a signature look, and stick with it. They might update their wardrobe with a few trends, but they always stick to a similar aesthetic. This also makes shopping a heck of a lot easier." —Leah Bourne, Stylecaster The more simplicity we can bring into our lives the less complexity we have to navigate, but initially the process of knowing what to strip away takes time and careful attention. Curating our signature style occurs in precisely the same manner. Check out this post in which I break down precisely how to determine your signature and then I believe you will find the shopping experience becomes easier and more enjoyable and your style quotient will steadily rise. ~Tune in to French-Living inspired posts/episodes from the Archives: ~#4: 10 Ways to Unearth Your Inner Francophile ~#23: The French Way: How to Create a Luxurious Everyday Life ~#32: The Francophile Style Guide: The 14 Essentials ~#96: Everyday Living in France – My Interview with Sharon Santoni ~#127: 20 Ways to Live Like a Parisienne ~#144: 20 Ways to Incorporate Your Love for the French Culture into Your Everyday ~#151: 10 Style Tips to Embrace the French Woman’s Approach to Effortless Chic ~#155:6 Life Lessons for Living Well from Julia Child ~#167: My Good Life in France: Author Janine Marsh ~#168: Everyday Living with Author & Blogger Sharon Santoni ~#169: Understanding the French Culture: My Interview with Géraldine Lepere of Comme une Française ~#182: David Leibovitz Talks About Making Paris His Home SIMILAR POSTS/EPISODES YOU MIGHT ENJOY: ~Why Not . . . Todays guest entrepreneur showing how to build their own perfect careers, is a lady who when it comes to looking good, and feeling great she has it down big time. She has her fingers on the pulse on what it takes to make ladies feel good about themselves. Which, coming from a house full of ladies like I do, must be an almost impossible job. Graduating from Washington University in St. Louis she earned her Master's Degree from Columbia University, in 2009 and went straight in to the entrepreneurial route. Yep, unless what I have researched is wrong, there was no way that our guest was going to be an employee sitting in a cubicle for nine hours, and she strode boldly into the world of freelance. But the fascinating thing is that from March to June 2009, she started three ventures which are still going strong today, freelancing for the StyleCaster, TheLuxurySpot and of course being the CEO of TheBeautyBean.com The latter being the place where her readers get an intimate and expansive look at beauty, health and wellness without the focus on weight loss, dieting and the number on the scale. She currently lives in Los Angeles (although she's still a New Yorker at heart!), and seems to have been born with more hustle muscle than the average. Which is great to creating the kind of lifestyle that give her freedom to enjoy her life. So does she see that the self-esteem issues that ladies have is something that is getting worse as time goes on? And does she see those same issues in herself or has she beaten them into submission? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show, to start joining up dots with the one and only beauty expert and entrepreneur Alexis Wolfer.
