Deut. 31:24–29 Ps. 147:12–20 Matt. 11:7–15 Rom. 3:1–4 But through Christian history, there have been questions raised about whether or not other books and writings belong in the canon of Scripture. The Belgic confession speaks of making a distinction between the “holy books” (Scripture) and the “apocryphal books.” in this message, we learn what the Apocryphal books are and why we do not receive them as Scripture. And the hope is that the Apocrypha will be put in its rightful place—not to be treated with Scriptural authority, but also not to be treated as something to avoid.

In this episode you will learn about: The Dead Sea Scrolls, discovered between 1947 in the caves of Qumran near the Dead Sea, are considered the greatest archaeological discovery of the 20th century. They contain over 900 manuscripts, offering profound insights into Jewish life and scriptural interpretation during the Second Temple period. The scrolls are attributed to a Jewish sect most likely the Essenes who withdrew from Jerusalem in protest against what they saw as a corrupt priesthood. They settled at Qumran, living in purity and waiting for the apocalyptic end of days. The discovery included stone vessels, ritual baths (mikvaot), and a scriptorium, all indicating a monastic, religious lifestyle deeply rooted in Scripture. There are three important historians that wrote about them: Philo of Alexandria, Josephus flavious and Pliny the Elder. Philo of Alexandria mentions that the essenes live in villages, not cities, to avoid moral corruption. They renounce wealth and personal property, living communally, they devote themselves to peace, agriculture, and virtue, rejecting war and slavery. Josephus flavius had the most information about the essenes, they reject pleasures, value virtue, and live communally without private property, they avoid marriage, live simply, and emphasize purity and ritual cleanliness, they follow strict discipline, practice daily prayers, and eat in sacred silence and their souls are believed to be immortal, and they view the body as a temporary prison. While Pliny the elder wrote only about the geographical location in his Natural history book and he says that the Essenes live near the Dead Sea, avoiding cities and women, they have no money, only palm trees and simplicity. Not much in details. Three Categories of Scrolls Biblical Canonical Texts: These are the oldest known Hebrew Bible manuscripts, predating the Masoretic Text our primary Hebrew Bible source by over 1,000 years. Every book of the Hebrew Bible was found—except Esther. Apocryphal and Pseudepigraphal Texts: These include works like 1 Enoch and the Book of Jubilees—books that were influential in early Judaism and Christianity, even if not canonized. Sectarian Texts: Unique to Qumran, these writings detail community life, beliefs, and regulations, including the Community Rule, War Scroll, and Thanksgiving Hymns. They reveal a society organized around purity, hierarchy, and eschatological expectation. For the complete Video online course check our website: www.twinsbiblicalacademy.com/paid-courses

Unveiling Abinadi: The Lost Prophecies and Connections to Isaiah
Pontius Pilate is a relatively minor figure in the gospels of the New Testament, but one who plays a vital role as the Roman official in charge of Jesus' sentencing. Given that he's the face of Rome in the New Testament Gospels, he's presented in a surprisingly positive light! The same is true for his appearances in some other early Christian writings. To try and get to the bottom of exactly why the official representative of the big, bad Roman empire is presented as such a sympathetic figure, we're going to be taking a look at one of these non-canonical texts in a bit more detail.
Was the Sacrifice of Isaac a Trick by Satan? Apocryphal Evidence Embark on an eye-opening exploration of the Abraham and Isaac story as we investigate apocryphal accounts that challenge the traditional biblical narrative. In this video, we delve into the Book of Jubilees, the Book of Jasher, and other ancient texts that suggest Satan's involvement in the events leading up to the near-sacrifice of Isaac. These revelations prompt us to rethink the concepts of divine testing and human faithfulness. By examining these alternative versions, we gain a richer understanding of the complexities and depths of Abraham's faith journey. This video is a must-watch for anyone interested in biblical studies, theology, and the enduring power of faith.
The Cynocephali were said to be a tribe of dog-headed men known in mythology and legend from many parts of the world, including ancient Egypt, India, Greece, and China. The Cynocephalus with the head of a canid, typically that of a dog or jackal, is a widely attested mythical phenomenon existing in many different forms and contexts, with ties to Egyptian gods such as Amon-Ra and Anubis. Join Joel as he peels back the layers of the myths that have trickled all the way down to the modern Dogman incarnations that ancient scholars have written about, including Pliny The Elder, Ctesias, and Herodotus. Apocryphal books such as the Book of Jasher lay the groundwork for where these creatures may have come from and what their interactions with ancient man may have been like. Lastly, Joel looks at the possibility of these Dogmen having a path to redemption without having pure human DNA. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for June 17, 2024 is: apocryphal uh-PAH-kruh-ful adjective Something described as apocryphal is of doubtful authenticity; the term is often applied to stories or legends that are often repeated but likely not true. Apocryphal can also describe something resembling or relating to the Apocrypha, the ancient Jewish books that are not part of the Hebrew Bible but are considered canonical in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. In the biblical use, the word is often capitalized. // The legend of how the song was fully composed while the singer was in a deep fever state is probably apocryphal. See the entry > Examples: "There is a likely apocryphal story about how Michelangelo, upon getting criticism about David's nose being too big, climbed a ladder and pretended to chisel it." — Rita Bullwinkel, The New York Times, 27 Feb. 2024 Did you know? In biblical study, Apocrypha refers to books outside an accepted canon of scripture. In modern use, the term refers specifically to a group of ancient Jewish books that are not part of the Hebrew Bible but are considered canonical in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches; Protestant churches follow Jewish tradition in considering these books noncanonical. Both apocrypha and apocryphal come, via Latin, from the Greek word apokrýptein, meaning "to hide (from), keep hidden (from)," which in turn comes from krýptein, "to conceal, hide." Both words entered English in the 16th century with their nonbiblical meanings, apocrypha referring to writings or statements of dubious authenticity, and apocryphal describing such things. Apocryphal is now the more common word. It most often describes an oft-repeated tale that is almost certainly not true.
If you're listening to this month's Primary Source, you're hearing from the acts of Cyprus' patron saint, St. Barnabas. St. Barnabas was a Cypriot Jew who converted to Christianity and undertook missionary work across the island and beyond. In the Acts of the Apostles, he was accompanied by St. Paul most famously confronting a magician named Elymas, also known as "Bar-Jesus," and converting the Roman proconsul of Cyprus, Sergius Paulus -- that is, until an unknown disagreement where Barnabas and Paul went their separate ways. But this month's Primary Source reading isn't from the Bible. This is from a non-canonical work called the "Apocryphal Acts of St. Barnabas." They are one of many works of early Christianity that were rejected by the early Church Councils. The Acts of Barnabas is believed to have been composed in the 5th or 6th century and describes the missionary activities of Barnabas. The Acts of Barnabas includes stories of his travels to Cyprus, Antioch, and Rome, where he is said to have performed miracles, converted many people to Christianity, and established churches. In this particular excerpt, we hear of Barnabas' missionary work in Cyprus, specifically in Amathus, where he encounters both pagans and Christian converts. He mentions condemning pagan athletics occurring in the nude outside of Kourion (which are promptly destroyed by an earthquake) and later, condemning a religious ceremony on the Acropolis of Amathus. In Salamis, however, Barnabas is taken and burned at the stake -- his remains were recovered in secret where he was buried with a copy of the Gospel of St. Matthew. These remains were said to have been found in the 5th century which would grant the Church of Cyprus autocephalic status. Next month, I welcome Professor Georgios Deligiannakis to discuss the transformative years of early Christianity: "Holy Men & Heathens: The Last Pagans of Cyprus"

In an Apocryphal writing entitled "The Acts of Pilate," Pontius Pilate gives some graphical detail about Jesus' death. But are they biblical? You might be surprised...
In Episode 611: Good Nephilim, guest host, Joel Thomas, invites us on a journey of Biblical redemption as he navigates Scripture, Apocryphal and Historical texts, tackling the possibility of Nephilim giants who may have turned from their evil ways and aligned themselves with Jehovah, rebelling against their Watcher parents. Did King David recruit Raphaim giants and cryptids to join his elite forces called The Mighty Men? Did these giants use advanced technology that King David wanted insider information on by adding members of the powerful Amorites and Anakim to his Special Ops team? In the Ancient Apocryphal book, The Book of Giants, did Enoch give word to the giants before the Flood that God would save them from destruction if they turned from evil? Did Noah offer salvation by Yahweh to the Nephilim bloodlines before the Deluge? Are there people on earth now who are born with giant DNA and are they offered the same forgiveness everyone is given per the Bible? Joel navigates these questions through the murky waters of Nephilim lore exploring the depths of God's grace and mercy, and how it not only may have impacted the Pre-Diluvian world, but even how it might the earth today.
