In this episode of Hoopsology, hosts Justin and Alan welcome back Portland Trail Blazers insider Danny Marang (Rip City Wrap-Up, 1080 The Fan, KATU Portland) to break down the fallout from the Chauncey Billups FBI gambling investigation and what it means for the future of the league. Marang takes us inside the story — revealing how he first heard about the news, the emotional reaction in Portland, and how this unprecedented scandal involving Billups, Terry Rozier, and Damon Jones connects to the mob, FBI tactics, and sports betting's growing influence on the NBA.
Will opens by noting it's a packed sports week with the NHL rolling, the NBA beginning, the NFL playoff picture taking shape, and the Blue Jays-Dodgers World Series about to begin. He reports that Trevor Story is expected to opt in with the Red Sox out of loyalty after the team supported him through injuries, and argues Story is essential to their 2026 hopes. He gives the Dodgers a slight edge in the World Series but says Toronto is dangerous because they're playing with “house money” and have a whole country behind them. He reflects on Brad Marchand's return to Boston as a Panther as the emotional end of the 25-year Boston sports dynasty era. He recaps Cooper Flagg's NBA debut and frames him — with Victor Wembanyama — as part of the league's next generation. He ends by reading an ESPN report about FBI arrests of Chauncey Billups, Terry Rozier, and Damon Jones in an illegal sports betting and poker-fixing investigation.

Last Thursday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced it had made arrests in a pair of investigations into illegal gambling involving National Basketball Association (NBA) players and coaches. Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier is among those charged in the illegal sports betting case, while Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and several others are charged with participating in rigged poker games with ties to the mafia. According to FBI Director Kash Patel, the bureau has arrested 34 people as a result of the multi-year investigations, which covered 11 states and involved tens of millions of dollars. Billups and Rozier have been placed on leaves from their teams, and the NBA announced a review of its gambling rules.Ad-free podcasts are here!To listen to this podcast ad-free, and to enjoy our subscriber only premium content, go to ReadTangle.com to sign up!I actually met them.Last year, the podcasts Question Everything and This American Lifedid a feature on the work we do here at Tangle. On this episode of Conduct Detrimental: THE Sports Law Podcast, Dan Lust (@SportsLawLust) is joined by Tarun Sharma (@tksharmalaw) to break down the only story anyone's talking about this week: the NBA's twin gambling scandals...including what they mean for the league, its leadership, and the future of sports integrity.Dan and Tarun talk the FBI's dual indictments involving current NBA players and coaches, including Terry Rozier and Chauncey Billups, and why the feds may have intentionally linked the “inside betting” and “mob poker” operations to send a message directly to the league. The duo unpacks the alleged role of organized crime, how player data triggered suspicious betting alerts, and why the NBA's initial decision to “clear” Rozier may come back to haunt Commissioner Adam Silver. They revisit the echoes of the Tim Donaghy scandal and debate whether this could force a true reckoning on gambling oversight in pro sports. Plus, Dan argues that this moment may finally be the “truth serum” that leagues can't sweep under the rug. Then, the duo touch on the NCAA's last-minute reversal of its new betting policy allowing college athletes to wager on pro sports—spurred by the timing of the NBA's scandals and pushback from SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. They discuss how NIL-era agents and crossover access to information could further complicate things for both college and pro leagues. To close, Dan drops his “bet of the week,” explaining why Justin Herbert at +3500 for NFL MVP might be the most mispriced line on the board. What to Watch For: Tarun highlights LSU's multi-million-dollar Brian Kelly buyout and how skyrocketing coaching payouts are driving private equity interest in college athletics. Dan recommends Hulu's Chad Powers and reminds listeners: if you see a great Halloween costume, tell them you get the reference.Let us know your thoughts!***Have a topic you want to write about? Federal authorities allege that the ring busted for running illegal sports and card-games used highly advanced and coordinated cheating technology. In the poker portion of the scheme, underground high-stakes games were manipulated using rigged shuffling machines that secretly read the deck's cards and transmitted which players held strong hands to an off-site operator, who then signaled a co-conspirator at the table (called the “quarterback” or “driver”) to direct bets accordingly. Devices included poker tables equipped with hidden X-ray cameras beneath the felt to identify face-down cards, chip trays with built-in analyzers/cameras, decoy cellphones to relay information, and decks marked so that only accomplices wearing special lenses or glasses could see the marks. In the sports-betting arm of the investigation, insiders harvested and sold non-public information about professional basketball players' injuries, playing time, and game-day decisions. Players or coaches allegedly tipped off conspirators to when they would sit out or exit early due to an injury, creating prop-bet opportunities. Wagers were placed accordingly on unders or player performance outcomes, using insider info to create a virtually guaranteed edge. The two schemes overlapped, involving organized-crime networks, professional athletes, and complex laundering of ill-gotten proceeds.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:How mafiosi and NBA stars used rigged card shufflers, X-ray tables and secret contact lenses in poker scamBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation wrapped up a massive federal investigation on October 23 2025 that took down 30+ people across 11 states for illegal gambling and sports-betting schemes. One major case, dubbed “Operation Royal Flush,” involved rigged high-stakes poker games backed by Mafia families—complete with manipulated shuffling machines, even X-ray tables to cheat players. Billups, head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, was arrested in Oregon for participating in one of the rigged games; prosecutors say he acted as a “face card” to lure bettors and was paid to attend games he knew were fixed. In a related but separate probe, the FBI also charged players and coaches for using inside information from NBA teams to place bets. For example, Terry Rozier of the Miami Heat was accused of providing confidential team info so that bets could be placed advantageously. Billups wasn't charged for this insider betting part, but he is facing serious wire-fraud and money-laundering charges for the poker ring.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

BT & Sal go off on the growing sports gambling crisis, driven by major names like Calvin Ridley, Emmanuel Clase, Billups, and Rozier getting caught. They argue for a "zero tolerance" policy—a Pete Rose-style lifetime ban—regardless of the size of the bet, to protect the integrity of the game. The hosts analyze how the digital age and prop bets make fixing easy and scams easier to detect, even if it's not strictly "The Mob" reaching out. They also rip the NCAA for recently allowing college athletes to bet on pro sports, calling it a setup for failure as players transition to leagues with strict rules. The consensus: the leagues must act decisively to stop the "sickness."

President Donald Trump has ended all trade negotiations with Canada, blaming a $75 million Ontario TV ad that used former President Ronald Reagan's image and voice to criticize tariffs. Trump called the ad “fraudulent,” saying it was meant to sway an upcoming Supreme Court hearing on his tariffs. The Reagan Foundation said the ad “misrepresents” Reagan's words, while Ontario Premier Doug Ford defended it as factual. The Supreme Court will hear arguments on the tariffs on Nov. 5.More than 30 people, including current and former NBA stars, are being charged in a case involving illegal sports betting. Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier were among those arrested and charged on Thursday. Billups also faces charges in a separate mafia-backed poker-rigging operation involving members of the Italian American mafia. Both Billups and Rozier have been placed on leave by their teams, and the NBA said it's reviewing the indictments.Alaska Airlines said flights are slowly returning to normal after a nationwide tech outage grounded planes on Thursday. The pro athletes and coaches who get busted for gambling are the dumbest people on earth.Former NBA players Chauncey Billups — currently the Portland Trail Blazers' head coach — and Damon Jones were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit both wire fraud and money laundering after allegedly participating in rigged poker games.Billups and Jones were allegedly dubbed as "face cards" which, the indictment says, were "members of the Cheating Teams and received a portion of the criminal proceeds in exchange for their participation in the scheme." The scheme resulted in the victims losing at least $7.15 million, dating back to April 2019, according to the Department of Justice."Billups and Jones, in particular… were utilized to attract victims to the games because of their status as former professional athletes," the DOJ said.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Billups wasn't charged for this insider betting part, but he is facing serious wire-fraud and money-laundering charges for the poker ring.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com
The pro athletes and coaches who get busted for gambling are the dumbest people on earth. Former NBA players Chauncey Billups — currently the Portland Trail Blazers' head coach — and Damon Jones were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit both wire fraud and money laundering after allegedly participating in rigged poker games.Billups and Jones were allegedly dubbed as "face cards" which, the indictment says, were "members of the Cheating Teams and received a portion of the criminal proceeds in exchange for their participation in the scheme." The scheme resulted in the victims losing at least $7.15 million, dating back to April 2019, according to the Department of Justice."Billups and Jones, in particular… were utilized to attract victims to the games because of their status as former professional athletes," the DOJ said.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
