In this episode of the Run the Riot Podcast, I had the privilege of catching up with my friend and seasoned ultrarunner, Chris Lyle. It's always a blast chatting with someone who truly gets the unique world of ultrarunning. Chris opened up about his incredible journey—from starting as a marathoner to now having 12 - 100-mile finishes under his belt, with no signs of slowing down. We shared a few laughs reminiscing about race memories and dug into what it takes to tackle iconic courses like the Arkansas Traveller 100 and High Lonesome. Along the way, we explored how ultrarunning challenges not just your body but also your mindset and outlook on life. Whether you're chasing your next big goal or just love hearing inspiring stories, you won't want to miss this one. Show notes: http://www.theriot.run/chrislyle
This week we start off by giving everyone in Florida our well wishes during this tough time with Hurricane Milton moving through. Then we discuss Courtney Dauwalter continuing her dynasty of high profile race victories by winning Nice Cote d' Azur (UTMB) 100 mile and she was not far off from first place overall. Then we go over the Saddles 100 and 50 mile races in Prescott, AZ where two of our friends and favorite Ohio trail runners Chad Trumbo and Jay Smithberger competed in those races and did very well. We also discuss race resultrs from Cuyamaca 100K, Spooner's Cove 50K, DC Peaks 50, Hennepin 100, Shawnee 50/50, Arkansas Traveller 100, and Yankee Springs Fall 50K. There is a new self-supported FKT on the 1,444 mile Buckeye trail. We take a look at Nedd Brockman from Australia who is trying to break Yiannis Kouros's long standing 1,000 mile record of 10 days 10 hours 30 minutes and 36 seconds. Nedd is 6 days in and 900K deep so he has some ground to make up in the next 4 days. We end the show talking about the Taco Bell 50K race in Denver that Sage Canaday participated in recently. Sounds like you need an iron stomach to get that done. Johnny revisits a 50K that he did with some friends in Columbus where they stopped at multiple breweries throughout the run. My race report for the 2023 Arkansas Traveller 100 miler which took place on Oct 7 & 8, 2023 near Perryville, Arkansas. Original video on Youtube : Richard Runs Trails This was my third time running this race. I give some advice and strategy then some details about the aidstations and location of my drop bags. The closest city with hotels is Morrilton, Arkansas. I give some advice on the hotels in town. From the AT 100 website: The Arkansas Traveller is one of the oldest 100 miles races there is, already having 32 races. AT100 is unique among the many ultras today because of the combination of volunteer support from many in the running community and beyond, the beautiful scenery of the Ouachita Trail and Forest Service roads, and the difficult runnable hills that will challenge you from beginning to end. This race is considered by many to be a great first 100 for anyone looking to test themselves at the premier ultra distance. The Arkansas Traveller course has remained almost exactly the same throughout its history. Two minor variances have occurred-both of which are merely trivial. For the first seven years, the race started at the site of the Lake Sylvia aid station and finished at the entrance to the Lake Sylvia park-where race headquarters was located. In 1998, due to repairs underway at the park, the race headquarters and finish were moved just over a half mile up the road to Camp Ouachita, with the starting point being adjusted accordingly. Beginning in 2001, the Turnaround aid station was moved approximately 200 yards to enable the start and finish to be at the same location. The Ouachita National Forest is the oldest National Forest in the southern United States. The forest encompasses 1,784,457 acres. Arkansas Traveller 100 is a Western States 100 qualifier.
This week we get to sit down and chat with Chad Hetrick. Chad just placed 2nd at the Arkansas Traveller 100 in a really tough field of runners! I have the privilege of coaching Chad and have loved his work ethic! It was no small feat juggling early morning training sessions, family life, and work but Chad handled it like a champ. We delve into what makes Chad tick, his past races, and how this year's Arkansas Traveller unfolded for him. Show Notes: http://www.theriot.run/chadh

Nicole takes us on a journey through some of her races since our last visit - from 'Never Summer 100K' to the muddy 'Lake Murray', the famously challenging 'Outlaw 100' and the Sweat Hot Summer Trails'. She discusses her training approach, having a coach, and the importance of setting her own goals and pacing herself. We cap it off with her blow-by-blow of 'Arkansas Traveler', where she achieved what she had never even realized was possible - Beating Ann Trason's 20-year course record! As a local fireman for 14 years, Jeremy knows what it means to do hard things, to expect pain in order to achieve your goal. So, when he set out to run the Arkansas Traveller 100 mile race through the Ouachita National Forest this fall, he was prepared to push through one of the most difficult physical competitions there is. Listen to this week's episode as we hear about Jeremy's story and his words of wisdom about a gritty mindset.
If you run trails around Arkansas, you probably know who Wesley Hunt is. Wesley is a beast of a runner and an all-around great guy. He's run Arkansas Traveller 100 five times and won it 4 of those times - placing 2nd on his first outing. Earlier this year, he won the LOViT 100 and plans to return to Traveller this year after a 5-year break. I love his outlook on embracing the emotions that come out during a race. We get into the mental aspect of running Ultras, competition, and training for longevity in the sport. We also chat about his experience with Arkansas Traveller 100, Western States 100, LOViT 100, Leadville 100 and others. You'll definitely enjoy the many nuggets of wisdom he drops in casual conversation! Show notes here: http://www.theriot.net/wesley

Laura Kearns just won the 2021 Arkansas Traveller 100! I got to sit down and visit with her about the stellar year she's been having in ultrarunning. Earlier this year, she ran her second 100-mile race, the LOViT 100, and won it! Laura puts in a lot of training miles, but she loves group runs, has fun, and does not hold herself to a rigid training plan. Listen in as we talk about how the races unfolded, training, equipment, nutrition, and life! Show notes: http://www.theriot.run/laurak
Amy is fast and puts in some serious work! She's currently training for Tunnel Hill 100 and I can't wait to see how she does. Amy had a fall in 2019 during one of her final training runs for the Arkansas Traveller 100 and had to miss the race. We talk about her coming back from that injury physically and mentally. We also talk about her how she's dealt with stomach issues and the steps she had to take to get that dialed in. I think you'll enjoy the interesting chat about her mindset when racing. You're going to enjoy my conversation with Brad Taylor. Brad lives in Texarkana. We met while running LOViT 100 and then we visited during the Ouachita 50 in Arkansas when I was crewing and pacing my coach, Cliff. Brad is a strong runner, a good dude, and a friend. He owns the FKT for Arkansas' famous Eagle Rock Loop! We talk about that experience, Arkansas Traveller, Last man Standing Races, and all kinds of fun stuff dealing with running ultras. Oh man...what a great visit with my friend Chris Baldwin. Chris is well known in Arkansas due to his involvement in running, volunteering, and co-directing races in the state. He and his friend Ronnie are well known for their training and aid station shenanigans. Chris and I both ran the Tahoe 200 in 2018 and we take some time to compare our experiences and laugh a lot about the videos on the internet of his delirium! Chris also gives us an update on his recovery from a fall last year that took him out of the Moab 240 due to a broken hip and wrist. (Hint: He'll be running Umstead 100 when this is released!) Other topics - Arkansas Trail Running Community, The LOViT 100, Arkansas Traveller, and the film that everyone training for Traveller should (not) watch! Show notes: http://www.theriot.run/chrisb
Kurt is a mathematician from Arkansas who is living and teaching in Maryland. His social media posts have cracked me up over the years. Take a run with Ultra Stories host John Lacroix as we talk about the dreaded DNF. John talks about his experience at the Arkansas Traveller 100 and how his day didn't live up to his intended expectations. In this episode, John discusses turning "Did Not Finish" into "Dared Greatly" should runners fail to reach the finish line. He goes into detail as to why it is we spend more time daring than we do "DNFing" in these ultras and how we should give ourselves credit where credit is still due.
Sean Nakamura is an insanely talented ultrarunner who just became the 4th person to complete The Great Eight - the eight original 100 mile races - in one summer. This includes the Old Dominion 100, Mohican Trail 100, Western States 100, Vermont 100, Angeles Crest 100, Leadville 100, Wasatch 100 and Arkansas Traveller 100. He through a couple other races in there for good measure (UTMB 100 and Tahoe 200!). Not only that, but he just hit day 3,223 of his on-going run streak. This is going to be an amazing episode!

Ozark Highlands Radio is a weekly radio program that features live music and interviews recorded at Ozark Folk Center State Park’s beautiful 1,000-seat auditorium in Mountain View, Arkansas. In addition to the music, our “Feature Host” segments take listeners through the Ozark hills with historians, authors, and personalities who explore the people, stories, and history of the Ozark region. This week, 2018 ACMA Female Vocalist of the Year, Ameripolitan Outlaw Female of the Year, songwriter and up and coming Outlaw Country star, Arkansas’ own Bonnie Montgomery recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with this uniquely talented Arkansas singer-songwriter. “Upon first listening to Bonnie Montgomery, it’s easy to mistakenly assume that you’ve stumbled upon a long-buried track by a legend from the golden era of country/western music. Such is the artistry of this Arkansas native and silver-voiced songstress. Her story is of her journey but she presents it through a folk/bluegrass/country perspective that’s traditional and timeless. Montgomery’s stunning vocal chops and ability to draw listeners in with her natural songwriting talent should come as no surprise. Her musical roots run deep. Brought up among the never-ending sound of music that flowed through her family’s Arkansas music store, her childhood was heavily steeped in Ozark bluegrass, Texas swing, Delta blues, as well as gospel and rock and roll. Surrounded by talented musicians that ran the gamut from performers on the original Sun Records to bluegrass greats and opera singers, Montgomery expanded her musical horizons and began performing.” - https://www.bonniemontgomerymusic.com/about In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator and country music legacy Mark Jones offers a 1983 archival recording of legendary fiddler Billy Matthews performing the traditional tune “Arkansas Traveller.” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Author, folklorist and songwriter Charley Sandage presents an historical portrait of the people, events and indomitable spirit of Ozark culture that resulted in the creation of the Ozark Folk Center State Park and its enduring legacy of music and craft. In this episode, Charley discusses with Jeanette Larson, Craft Director at the Ozark Folk Center State Park the question “What’s Worth Keeping” from our past in the rapidly evolving culture of our present.
I was more than 18 hours into my run and slightly more than 92 miles closer to the finish line of the Arkansas Traveller 100 than when I started at 5 a.m. earlier that morning -- and I had to go to the bathroom. Bad. My stomach was blowing up. I didn't feel like eating or drinking or anything else. I just wanted to run those last eight miles and be done with my first hundred mile race. I stepped off the trail to handle my business, and my running partner took the opportunity to take a little break himself. As I readjusted my gear, unpacking and repacking the necessary equipment, I noticed a set of headlights not too far away from me. I thought it was strange that a car was way out here in the middle of the northern mountains of Arkansas -- but it wasn't any of my business. Kind of strange. Oh well. I had a race to keep running. When I rejoined my running partner, he asked if I had seen the mountain lion or bobcat that was slinking around in the bushes next to me. Let's talk about it >> http://edgy.es/fbgroup

David Failing is a 31 year old professor of mathematics at Lewis University, near Chicago. Yes, for a brief moment, there were TWO doctors in the LHRL studios. Just a few months after he started running in the fall of 2009, the ultra seed was planted (though it took a while to take hold), and in 2014 he ran his first 50k, followed by a 50 miler in 2015, and his first (and only to date) 100 miler at the Arkansas Traveller in 2016. Above all else, David believes that trail and ultra running allow us to explore the world under our own power, and he wants others to get out and explore however they can (running, hiking, biking, boating...). From October 2017 to October 2018, he will run all six 100 mile trail races in the state of Illinois to raise money for a non-profit (Trails for Illinois) that helps communities benefit economically from their local trails, and also builds and maintains those same trails. Why six 100 milers in a year? Because nobody ever told him he couldn't. He will be blogging about his training and racing at http://trails.davidfailing.com, and asks you to consider even a small donation at http://hennepinhundred.causevox.com/davidfailingto support Illinois trails.
