This one's a little different—no guests, no live race calls—just me sharing the full story of how I went from a bullied high school runner to a thru-hiker to an ultra runner trying to get comfortable being uncomfortable.I talk about quitting school to hike the Pacific Crest Trail, building a monster endurance base through FKTs and 8,000-mile slogs, and how I've had to completely rewire my brain and body to embrace faster, higher-effort racing. We hit on pacing, fueling, treadmill hiking, crew control issues (yes, I admit it), and why I “Jeff” everything in life.Plus, I talk about my weird obsession with making my own drink mix, being risk-averse in ultras, and how training for Cocodona (year 5!) is going. There's a bunch of insight here—especially if you're a thru-hiker looking at ultras, or an ultra runner wondering what lessons the long trails can teach.Oh—and we start by breaking some actual running news: Des Linden is coming for the 50-mile world record at Tunnel Hill. As I mentioned in my American Heroes Run episode, there were numerous impressive performances and I'm going to bring you chats with some of these while I'm traveling. First is Lisa Kabat, who not only improved her distance in the 9 hour & 11 minute race from 48 miles in 2023 to 62 miles this year, but also smashed the race record… the men's record, too. Given the unusual time length, perhaps that's a world record? Lisa lives near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, but she prefers to run loops around her neighborhood, to the tune of 25 miles every day. Yes, that's right. Thus, the loop format of the American Heroes Run suits her very well. What was cool was that Lisa generally had a big smile as she completed every lap. This might distract you from gawking at her unusual running form. She runs on her toes with a short, machine-like stride, with arms wildly swinging. I coached high school basketball for many years, and my first instinct would be to fix bad shooting form. But if the player was making his shots, you just shrugged and let it go. The same thing applies to Lisa – it seems to work for her. It's funny but just last week some people I was with talked about this woman with the funky form who they would see over and over and over running past their house near where Lisa lives. I've got a strong hunch I know who they were talking about! Lisa's next goal is Tunnel Hill, which, while it's out-and-back, is relatively flat. As she says, with her style it's likely she should stay off of rocky trails. But in our fun chat, you'll be impressed hearing how she fits huge miles into her schedule, and her enthusiasm for cranking out repetitive miles.Lisa KabatFacebook Lisa KabatBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

Takeaways Taggart Van Etten holds the world record for the fastest 100-miler on a treadmill. He has pursued Olympic qualifying times and has a preference for flat 100-mile races. Taggart had a successful race at the Hennepin 100 but faced challenges at the Tunnel Hill 100. His upcoming goals include running eight-minute pace for 24 hours at Desert Solstice. Balancing speed and endurance in training can be achieved through shorter intervals and progressive long runs. The periodic training model, with a focus on specific zones, can be effective for improving performance. Training for mountain races in non-vert areas can involve hill sprints, treadmill workouts, and visualizing the race course. Strength training can be beneficial for injury prevention and performance enhancement, but it should be tailored to individual needs. Recovering from plantar fasciitis may require cross-training, rolling the foot, and gradually reintroducing running. Developing mental strength in running involves envisioning race day, expecting challenges, and finding strategies to overcome them. Coaching and supporting a runner requires understanding their goals, providing guidance, and trusting their training process. This year we have highlighted several runners who have logged incredible achievements in longer distance events at a young age. Remember Lauryn Wojcik, who had never raced longer than 6K and yet crushed the Leadville Trail 100? This next performance caught my eye, and the guy is right in my backyard. Boulder-based Charlie Lawrence last month broke the 50-mile world record previously held by veteran ultrarunner and current UTMB champion Jim Walmsley. Charlie is 28, self-coached, and his previous longest run had been 35 miles. He completed the distance in 4:48:21 at the Tunnel Hill 50 Mile in Illinois, averaging 5:46 per mile. I like that Charlie didn't run it on a track or in an artificial environment, but in an actual race, on a mostly gravel surface with some hills. Charlie, a native of Foley, Minn., got the inspiration to challenge the record, which he was actually confident he would secure, from American two-time Olympian Des Linden after helping pace her to a 50K world record. After sitting out most of 2022 with a sacral stress fracture, Charlie left his running group and set out on his own, upped his volume into the 140 miles per week range, and added some beastly track workouts as well. Charlie, who will line up to run the Olympic Trials Marathon this February, feels that the speedwork he does for 26.2 miles definitely helps him at longer distances as well. It's a fun story as Charlie rose from a decent high school runner who took two Minnesota state titles in the 3200 meters, to being a contributing all-Big Ten performer for the University of Minnesota, to being good enough to run in the Olympic Trials marathon in 2020 yet not threaten to make the team, to busting through with a world record at a totally new distance for him. We hit on everything here including his pacing strategy, his fueling, his extraordinary focus, his upcoming goals, and even the stories behind his tattoos. He's a really nice and engaging guy, so I hope you enjoy this!Charlie LawrenceInstagram @lawrence_charBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

That's Ultrarunning, get up & try again! Join OMR coaches Loretta & Reese as they pick apart the meaning of DNFs & drop-downs. Do we let them define us, or do we let them inform us how to be race better in the future? Coach Loretta approached Reese with this idea after his lackluster drop-down from the 2023 Tunnel Hill 100 mile to the 50 mile. You can bet it's still fresh in his mind, listen to his thoughts & reflections after facing this himself.
What is it like to run 50 miles at a 5:45 average pace? Our guest today tells us exactly what it feels like and what it took to help him get there. Because he recently did that at the Tunnel Hill 50 miler where he set the world record for fastest 50 mile in 4:48:41! Our guest today is Charlie Lawrence and he's a professional runner for Bare Performance Nutrition and HVMN. He is also a 2:16 marathoner and has numerous spectacular finishes in the half marathon and marathon distances. This recent 50 miler was his first ever 50 miler as well! In this episode, Charlie shares how he mentally was able to push through the lows of the race, why he approached speed work so digiligently in his prep for his first 50 miler, and his interesting nutrition strategy involving exogenous ketones. This week we sit down for a conversation with Dean Smith from Tunnell Hill Mushrooms. Dean is a passionate mushroom grower in the foothills of Mt Rumney, just outside Hobart, Tasmania who has been described by some as “the Russell Coight of mushrooms”! And the best part is… he grows his mushrooms in an old decommissioned railway tunnel that was built back in 1891 and is 12 metres underground!!The railway tunnel is 160 metres long and was built as part of the Bellerive to Sorell railway line taking the fine folk of old Hobart town to enjoy a day at the races. The popular train ran from 1892 to 1926. The life of the tunnel then continued until the end of WWII with the Australian defence force taking control of the old tunnel to store weapons, ammunition and gold bullion.Tunnel Hill Mushrooms is one of only two farms in Australia growing delicious and nutritious mushrooms in a disused railway tunnel. The unique tunnel grow room provides a wonderful environment for these bundles of fungus to thrive.Dean is so passionate about what he does. He lives and breathes mushrooms, and it is his vision to have a large-scale farm producing wonderful Oyster and Shitake mushrooms and to host long table dinners, tours and events inside the tunnel. Dean also produces medicinal mushroom tinctures, dried mushrooms, mushroom seasoning dust AND even a Shitake vodka! This is a wonderfully insightful conversation and we hope you all enjoy it as much as we did!Hosts: Jayde Timms & Sam Baff from Grown Not Flown Guest: Dean Smith from Tunnel Hill Mushrooms Website: www.tunnelhillmushrooms.com.auInstagram: @tunnelhillmushrooms

This week Clint and Dawson sit down with Coree Woltering who is a Rock/Creek Outfitters staff and Northface runner. Coree, who's known by some as one of the #cornfieldcowboys, was born and raised in Ottawa, Illinois. He began his running career in the 400m and 800m distances and had his sights on becoming a professional triathlete, qualifying for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships twice. But before long, he discovered ultrarunning and became mesmerized by the idea of running 100 miles in the mountains. Coree took his frontier to the next level in 2015, where he won every trail 50k he signed up for that year. In 2016, he averaged a 6:36 per mile to win the Tunnel Hill 50. At 30 years old, he set the fastest known time (FKT) in 1,200-mile Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin. And then followed that up with that Pinhoti Trail FKT in 2021. He ended up loving the trail so much that he moved to the south! Most recently, Coree finished Western States 100. When Coree is not running, he is probably sitting on his balcony drinking a cup of coffee, or selling shoes at Rock Creek! Stop by Rock/Creek Outfitters on Manufactures Rd in Chattanooga Tn and get advice from Coree. Accomplishments: Ice Age Trail FKT (~1,200 miles), Pinhoti Trail FKT 349 miles, 2019 World's Toughest Race Eco-Challenge Fiji, 2x 70.3 World Championship Finisher, 7x 100 mile finisher, 2:26 Chicago Marathon 2016, 5:30 Tunnel Hill 50 Mile 2016, 25 + Ultramarathon podium finishes. In this new format, First & Last, we talked with two amazing women: Western States 100 first-place woman and female course record holder, Courtney Dauwalter, and the very last finisher, Jennifer St. Amand, who finished with just 21 seconds to spare. This new feature gives listeners insight into how WS100 unfolded for both runners who had two of the most compelling finishes at this year's event. Dauwalter lives in Leadville, Colorado, and is a retired school teacher turned professional ultrarunner. Her running resume is nothing short of staggering with first-place finishes from around the US and abroad, including UTMB, Hardrock, Tahoe 200, Tarawera, Moab 240 and others. This interview was recorded just days before her record-setting performance and win at the Hardrock 100. St. Amand is from Dexter, Minnesota, a former social worker and now recruiter for the Minnesota Army National Guard. Jen has ten 100-mile-races under her belt, including seven sub-24 hour finishes with two of those under 19 hours at the Tunnel Hill 100 in Illinois. This is the first of two parts of a very fun conversation with one of the really impressive relatively-new stars of the ultraendurance world, Don Reichelt. After pretty much his debut doing Leadman in 2015, Don has plunged headlong into running long distances and doing everything he can to embrace finding out how far he can go in the sport. He has moved to a house at 9600-feet elevation near Fairplay, Colo., and has outfitted his place with a workout space, ice plunge barrel, sauna, and more. When he first broke out, he won the Lean Horse 100-miler and ran a blazing 13:16 at Tunnel Hill. He has won the 52-mile Coldwater Rumble in Ariz. the past two years. His most recent achievement was breaking the Guinness World record for running 12 hours, 24 hours, and for 100 miles on a manual treadmill, which is quite a bit more challenging than a motorized one. In this first part, we talk about Don's ups and downs running at the Leadville Trail 100, about his relationship to David and David's continued influence on him to this day, about learning the process to taking big jumps in his running abilities, which I think is quite educational, the benefits he's noticed from his vegetarian diet, and challenging himself to run races like the Keys 100 in Florida's humidity, and the Badwater 135, where he surprised a lot of people in finishing third in his debut. His focus and his curiosity to see how far he can challenge himself is truly inspirational. Plus, he's a super nice guy, so I hope you enjoy this great chat.Don ReicheltFacebook @Don ReicheltInstagram @runwithdonBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor

In S2Ep22 of the PRP, Adam jams with seasoned long distance runner, race pacer extraordinaire, public health guru, proud mama bear and certified running coach Brandess Wallace who has been preparing for the Tunnel Hill 50 mile on November 12th, 2022. Brandess jumps right in and explains how and why her relationship with running is all about connecting with others. Although her involvement in the sport began as a platform for her to challenge herself on an individual level, Brandess spills the tea on why over the years her love affair with running has blossomed into much more than she could ever have imagined. Shannon Baker, serial running retiree, enthusiastic social worker, proud mother of eleven children (yep you read that right) and Brandess's heterosexual soul mate joins the show to provide insight on her own personal relationship with running as well as what it's meant to be a part of Brandess's journey. The two deep dive on the origins of their friendship, which started as opponents in a friendly neighborhood game of Bunco. From full fledged dice nemeses to running besties, as soon as these two got out for a trot together - the rest was history. Things get vulnerable when Brandess opens up and provides insight about some recent mental health struggles she has been forced to face. From raising children full-time to being a military spouse and everything in between, Brandess explains how her grapple with depression happened quickly and without her even fully realizing it. Although she is doing much better now, Brandess shares some principal insight on lessons learned from going through her recent experiences. The most importance of which? Never forget to prioritize YOURSELF. Self love and self care are paramount and are a crucial first step in providing others, personally or professionally, with the best version of you. How many of Shannon's kids were adopted?? What the hell is Bunco?! Heterosexual soulmates? What on earth is the mullet crew and why do they have merch?! Just how many times has Shannon retired from running? Peloton sleep meditation? What exactly do we mean when we say double deucin? T rex flex tights?! Is Adam crying??? All of this and SO MUCH MORE in this encouraging, hilarious and warm episode of the PRP. Trail running can be intimidating to lots of people. What if you get lost, break your ankle, or see a snake? I'm not sure that you're safer running in the city with weirdos and speeding BMWs, but I think it's pretty normal to be intimidated by trail running if you've never done it before. Anne (Wheatly) George is on the Run to the Top today to help us out. Anne has challenged herself with some of the toughest trails in the country. She has run Rim to Rim to Rim of the Grand Canyon twice, including one trip all by herself. She's run the iconic Nepali coastline in Hawaii solo, trekked her way to Everest base camp and run/hiked her way up half dome in Yosemite twice to name a few of her adventures. When she isn't adventuring, she enjoys ultra trail racing. Anne has completed the Tunnel Hill 100 miler in 16 hours with a second place finish. She also earned second at the Bear 100 and took First place overall at Badwater Cape Fear 50. In this episode we talk about: the misconceptions about trail running, how to stay safe and get better at it, and how to train and fuel your next adventure If you've ever wanted to try trail running or if you already love it and want to get inspired, this is the show for you.
