Life is a series of transitions from one thing to the next, and this year marks a transition for Des with the move from elite marathoning to her next chapter. This episode is about just that and her documentary titled "The Next Chapter," where she talks about the timing and reasons behind this transition for her. If you haven't checked out the documentary already, then do so here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuPVzH3HN8I. It's a must-watch that will have you wiping your eyes. Kara shares the moment with Des as she relates back to her own transition from elite marathoning. This episode, however, is not all tears. There are plenty of laughs too, as with any conversation between these two. They also talk about signing and getting autographs, hugs from Taylor Swift, first pitches, Kara's new tattoo, hiding purchases from your partner/spouse, food delivery, and some very fast times on the trails at Tunnel Hill. Plus, you get an update on Kara's running and her dystonia. Though running news was light this week, this conversation has so much good stuff in it. As always, they finish with an uplifting Top 5 sponsored by Lever Movement. For 15% off on your Lever system, use code NOBODYASKEDUS at levermovement.com.
We chocolatized our life before this amazing episode! The main topic was a new study on elite marathoners measuring responses to different carb intakes, finding a 2.6% lower oxygen cost at 120 grams per hour compared to 60 grams per hour. It showed massive carb oxidation rates at high outputs. In 10 years, we might look back on this study as a game-changing moment in the science of endurance performance. And this one had so many cool topics! Other topics: Megan's biggest uphill treadmill threshold workout, David's Zwift racing, the strange connection between energy intake and iron deficiency, how hydration could influence stress responses, the predictive power of smiling in pre-race photos, Anne Flower's 50 mile world record, other records at Tunnel Hill, whether to walk onto the track team, offseason layoffs, race week nutrition, and AI messaging.Stick around for a beautiful affirming Listener Corner message! This past weekend, several records fell at the Tunnel Hill 100-miler, including the women's 50-mile world record, the women's 100-mile world record, and the women's 100K national record. Allison ran the marathon--setting a course record in the process!--so she was on-hand to watch it all go down. This week, she shared with us all that she saw while there!

I was on the ground at Javelina while Allison rode shotgun in the live chat, and—wow—what a day. Will Murray put on the most nondescript masterclass you'll ever see: smooth, steady, course record, golden ticket. David Roche held on for second, then surprised everyone by declining his ticket, which handed Canyon Woodward his shot after a blazing late charge. On the women's side, my AT-record pal Tara Dower absolutely torched the course record by over 30 minutes, while eligibility rules behind her shaped a wild golden-ticket battle. We break down why times were so fast (cooler temps, NASCAR-level aid stations, dialed cooling, and, yes, the shoe game) and the new reality of wall-to-wall coverage—mountain bikes, lights and all. Plus: Molly Seidel aiming for a Black Canyon ticket, the latest doping headlines and what they mean for our sport, and a quick look ahead to Tunnel Hill, JFK, and silly-season sponsorships. This one's a little different—no guests, no live race calls—just me sharing the full story of how I went from a bullied high school runner to a thru-hiker to an ultra runner trying to get comfortable being uncomfortable.I talk about quitting school to hike the Pacific Crest Trail, building a monster endurance base through FKTs and 8,000-mile slogs, and how I've had to completely rewire my brain and body to embrace faster, higher-effort racing. We hit on pacing, fueling, treadmill hiking, crew control issues (yes, I admit it), and why I “Jeff” everything in life.Plus, I talk about my weird obsession with making my own drink mix, being risk-averse in ultras, and how training for Cocodona (year 5!) is going. There's a bunch of insight here—especially if you're a thru-hiker looking at ultras, or an ultra runner wondering what lessons the long trails can teach.Oh—and we start by breaking some actual running news: Des Linden is coming for the 50-mile world record at Tunnel Hill. As I mentioned in my American Heroes Run episode, there were numerous impressive performances and I'm going to bring you chats with some of these while I'm traveling. First is Lisa Kabat, who not only improved her distance in the 9 hour & 11 minute race from 48 miles in 2023 to 62 miles this year, but also smashed the race record… the men's record, too. Given the unusual time length, perhaps that's a world record? Lisa lives near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, but she prefers to run loops around her neighborhood, to the tune of 25 miles every day. Yes, that's right. Thus, the loop format of the American Heroes Run suits her very well. What was cool was that Lisa generally had a big smile as she completed every lap. This might distract you from gawking at her unusual running form. She runs on her toes with a short, machine-like stride, with arms wildly swinging. I coached high school basketball for many years, and my first instinct would be to fix bad shooting form. But if the player was making his shots, you just shrugged and let it go. The same thing applies to Lisa – it seems to work for her. It's funny but just last week some people I was with talked about this woman with the funky form who they would see over and over and over running past their house near where Lisa lives. I've got a strong hunch I know who they were talking about! Lisa's next goal is Tunnel Hill, which, while it's out-and-back, is relatively flat. As she says, with her style it's likely she should stay off of rocky trails. But in our fun chat, you'll be impressed hearing how she fits huge miles into her schedule, and her enthusiasm for cranking out repetitive miles.Lisa KabatFacebook Lisa KabatBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

Taggart also shares insights into his coaching philosophy. In this conversation, Taggart VanEtten shares his approach to balancing speed and endurance in training, focusing on shorter intervals and progressive long runs. He discusses the periodic training model and the importance of training in specific zones. Taggart also provides insights on training for mountain races in non-vert areas, incorporating strength training, recovering from plantar fasciitis, and developing mental strength in running. He emphasizes the need to envision race day during training and to expect and overcome challenges. Taggart concludes by discussing his coaching philosophy and the importance of supporting and trusting athletes. Takeaways Taggart Van Etten holds the world record for the fastest 100-miler on a treadmill. He has pursued Olympic qualifying times and has a preference for flat 100-mile races. Taggart had a successful race at the Hennepin 100 but faced challenges at the Tunnel Hill 100. His upcoming goals include running eight-minute pace for 24 hours at Desert Solstice. Balancing speed and endurance in training can be achieved through shorter intervals and progressive long runs. The periodic training model, with a focus on specific zones, can be effective for improving performance. Training for mountain races in non-vert areas can involve hill sprints, treadmill workouts, and visualizing the race course. Strength training can be beneficial for injury prevention and performance enhancement, but it should be tailored to individual needs. Recovering from plantar fasciitis may require cross-training, rolling the foot, and gradually reintroducing running. Developing mental strength in running involves envisioning race day, expecting challenges, and finding strategies to overcome them. Coaching and supporting a runner requires understanding their goals, providing guidance, and trusting their training process. This year we have highlighted several runners who have logged incredible achievements in longer distance events at a young age. Remember Lauryn Wojcik, who had never raced longer than 6K and yet crushed the Leadville Trail 100? This next performance caught my eye, and the guy is right in my backyard. Boulder-based Charlie Lawrence last month broke the 50-mile world record previously held by veteran ultrarunner and current UTMB champion Jim Walmsley. Charlie is 28, self-coached, and his previous longest run had been 35 miles. He completed the distance in 4:48:21 at the Tunnel Hill 50 Mile in Illinois, averaging 5:46 per mile. I like that Charlie didn't run it on a track or in an artificial environment, but in an actual race, on a mostly gravel surface with some hills. Charlie, a native of Foley, Minn., got the inspiration to challenge the record, which he was actually confident he would secure, from American two-time Olympian Des Linden after helping pace her to a 50K world record. After sitting out most of 2022 with a sacral stress fracture, Charlie left his running group and set out on his own, upped his volume into the 140 miles per week range, and added some beastly track workouts as well. Charlie, who will line up to run the Olympic Trials Marathon this February, feels that the speedwork he does for 26.2 miles definitely helps him at longer distances as well. It's a fun story as Charlie rose from a decent high school runner who took two Minnesota state titles in the 3200 meters, to being a contributing all-Big Ten performer for the University of Minnesota, to being good enough to run in the Olympic Trials marathon in 2020 yet not threaten to make the team, to busting through with a world record at a totally new distance for him. We hit on everything here including his pacing strategy, his fueling, his extraordinary focus, his upcoming goals, and even the stories behind his tattoos. He's a really nice and engaging guy, so I hope you enjoy this!Charlie LawrenceInstagram @lawrence_charBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

This week Clint and Dawson sit down with Coree Woltering who is a Rock/Creek Outfitters staff and Northface runner. Coree, who's known by some as one of the #cornfieldcowboys, was born and raised in Ottawa, Illinois. He began his running career in the 400m and 800m distances and had his sights on becoming a professional triathlete, qualifying for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships twice. But before long, he discovered ultrarunning and became mesmerized by the idea of running 100 miles in the mountains. Coree took his frontier to the next level in 2015, where he won every trail 50k he signed up for that year. In 2016, he averaged a 6:36 per mile to win the Tunnel Hill 50. At 30 years old, he set the fastest known time (FKT) in 1,200-mile Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin. And then followed that up with that Pinhoti Trail FKT in 2021. He ended up loving the trail so much that he moved to the south! Most recently, Coree finished Western States 100. When Coree is not running, he is probably sitting on his balcony drinking a cup of coffee, or selling shoes at Rock Creek! Stop by Rock/Creek Outfitters on Manufactures Rd in Chattanooga Tn and get advice from Coree. Accomplishments: Ice Age Trail FKT (~1,200 miles), Pinhoti Trail FKT 349 miles, 2019 World's Toughest Race Eco-Challenge Fiji, 2x 70.3 World Championship Finisher, 7x 100 mile finisher, 2:26 Chicago Marathon 2016, 5:30 Tunnel Hill 50 Mile 2016, 25 + Ultramarathon podium finishes. In this new format, First & Last, we talked with two amazing women: Western States 100 first-place woman and female course record holder, Courtney Dauwalter, and the very last finisher, Jennifer St. Amand, who finished with just 21 seconds to spare. This new feature gives listeners insight into how WS100 unfolded for both runners who had two of the most compelling finishes at this year's event. Dauwalter lives in Leadville, Colorado, and is a retired school teacher turned professional ultrarunner. Her running resume is nothing short of staggering with first-place finishes from around the US and abroad, including UTMB, Hardrock, Tahoe 200, Tarawera, Moab 240 and others. This interview was recorded just days before her record-setting performance and win at the Hardrock 100. St. Amand is from Dexter, Minnesota, a former social worker and now recruiter for the Minnesota Army National Guard. Jen has ten 100-mile-races under her belt, including seven sub-24 hour finishes with two of those under 19 hours at the Tunnel Hill 100 in Illinois.
