Do Hard Things
Breathwork, Movement, and High Performance with Brian Larson

Send us a textBrian Larson's journey from pharmaceutical industry professional to movement specialist, breathwork facilitator, and coach reveals powerful insights about transformation that extends far beyond physical appearance. The conversation opens with Brian's early realization that changing his body could lead to changing his mind, setting him on a path of continuous growth and service to others.Diving deep into movement principles, Brian explains the critical difference between stretching and mobility—the latter being the game-changer for injury prevention and athletic performance. His candid assessment of CrossFit as both "the cure" for many health conditions and "a disease" for those who overtrain offers a balanced perspective rarely heard in fitness circles. The practical advice for newcomers to train three days weekly and properly scale workouts provides a sustainable approach to intense training.Nutrition simplicity shines through as Brian emphasizes protein as the foundation (0.7-1g per pound of bodyweight) while advocating for gradual, sustainable changes rather than restrictive diets. "You cannot out-train a bad diet" serves as a powerful reminder that nutrition fundamentals trump exercise intensity for long-term results.Perhaps most fascinating is the transformation of both host and guest from breathwork skeptics to passionate advocates. Brian expertly explains how controlled breathing creates hormetic stress that trains your nervous system to handle external stressors, improves sleep, enhances recovery, and even helps process trauma. This science-backed approach to breathwork strips away the "hippy dippy" stigma, positioning it as an essential tool for high performers. The distinction between high achievers who sacrifice health and relationships versus high performers who excel across all domains captures the essence of the Do Hard Things philosophy. As Brian puts it: "I want so many people to step into this space and grow and accelerate their life forward."Ready to transform your approach to fitness, stress management, and performance? Send us a textWhat happens when you reclaim the identity you've been running from your entire life? Siegfried Jay Tiegs aka "Sig" takes us on a raw, unfiltered journey from childhood trauma to profound self-discovery in this deeply personal conversation.Born to a German father carrying the weight of post-WWII trauma and a Dutch mother struggling with mental illness, Siegfried's early years were marked by abuse, poverty, and relentless bullying. Hating his unusual name and battling a severe stutter, he rejected "Siegfried" for "JJ" – a small act of self-preservation that would take decades to understand and ultimately reverse.Through intensive personal development work and deep shadow exploration, Siegfried made a stunning discovery – his birth name, which he had rejected in shame, means "peaceful warrior" in German. The very identity he had been running from was precisely what he had been seeking to become. This epiphany led to a powerful ceremony at Machu Picchu where he reclaimed not just his name, but his authentic self.Siegfried “Sig” Jay Tiegs, founder of Do Hard Things Nation, Army veteran, endurance athlete, and certified running coach.A retired Major with 27 years of service in the U.S. Army, a certified trauma coach, high-performance life coach, breathwork facilitator, speaker, and co-author of Life on Offense: A Tactical Guide to Dominate Life and End Mediocrity. His story is one of resilience, from a difficult childhood to combat deployments, from military injuries to ultramarathons and adventure races.Today, he combines his experience as a soldier, athlete, and trauma-informed healer to help people push past limitations and create lasting transformation. We want to thank everyone who has supported the show and the ways we've had to adapt this past year. We can't tell you how much it means to us to have this community. We love you, Runcation Nation. We can't wait to runcation with you soon! RUN On Saturday, Aimee ran the Tunnel to Towers 5K in Fort Myers on the Florida Southwestern State College campus. The cause and organization has a motto:  “While we have time, let us do good.”  We did support a great cause at that race weekend, and this foundation supports our country's heroes and their families. Their contribution is mortgage-free homes to families of fallen heroes, those injured serving our great nation in our military. This organization supports police officers, firefighters, and first responders in the same way. It was a moving tribute to open the race and a safe, closed course on the college campus. The medal and shirt were well done, too. The best part is that these 5K foot races are run nationwide, so chances are one is near you if you want to participate and support a great organization. Find out more about the race and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation at these links: https://runsignup.com/Race/FL/FortMyers/TunneltoTowers5KRunWalkFortMyersFL https://t2t.org/   EAT The post-race party brought tasty chicken wings from a place called Glory Days. These were smoked and seasoned with their special dry-rub recipe. Plus, the staff serving these delicious and smoky offerings were so friendly.   They provided post-race water, too. It was a protein-packed post-race offering. Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, and Georgia have locations, too. You can have these and a great margarita, their restaurants, and much more! If you needed carbs, bagels were only two steps away at the next booth, provided by The Bagel Factory. This is a local bagel place with all sorts of tasty bagels and cream cheese spreads in various flavors, even pumpkin available now that it is fall, too! DRINK We are on hiatus right now from enjoying cocktails, beer, or wine as we start to ramp up our training again. Dana is testing a new beverage that serves as a meal and can also support our training and recovery. We are getting into the heart of our training to return to the Disneyland races with the Dumbo Double Dare Challenge (a 10K and Half Marathon Challenge). Often, we need a protein-packed meal but have little time to make it. Other protein shakes we have tried are chalky, and some have an artificial aftertaste. Dana researched and looked for better. Enter The Whole Feast. It is all-natural and packs 21 grams of protein per serving, but Dana says it is the best-tasting protein shake he has ever had. This week's conversation is with Keira D'Amato, a full-time realtor, mother of two, and one of the most elite female long-distance runners in the United States. Keira's running career took off in college where she became a four-time All-American Track athlete at American University. However, just a couple years after graduating, she underwent a major ankle surgery which put a quick - and heartbreaking - end to her post-collegiate running career. Eight years later, Keira started chasing down some “unfinished business” and went on to set the American Women's Record in the Marathon (2:19:12), the World Record in the Women's Only 10 Mile Run (51:23), and was selected to Team USA for the World Half Marathon Championships in 2020 & 2022... all while juggling the responsibilities of raising two kids and a career as a full-time realtor. Keira is epic and this conversation is about so much more than her career as an athlete – it's about pain, purpose, re-discovery, and having the courage to go for that thing you've always wanted… even when it seems like it's too late. ----Please support our partners! We're able to keep growing and creating content for YOU because of their support.
