Wherever could we find purple prose in Hindi cinema??? The Dirty Picture (2011), that's for sure.
In this conversation, MBM's producer and host, Mariyam Haider speaks with Sulfath Laila and Gargi Harithakam, who are the co-founders of Vanaja Collective - that supports and helps couples from Kerala's queer community, overcome their families' resistance and find systemic avenues to bring them together. One of the successful cases that Vanaja Collective worked on was of Adhila Nasarin and Fathima Noora - who fought familial and legal challenges - to reunite and live together as a couple. As a queer Muslim woman, Sulfath shares their journey growing up in a household that was largely driven by men and followed patriarchal norms and expectations. Over the years, Sulfath notes how they have derived support and strength from the women in her family, fought patriarchal mindsets and come together to tackle Muslim stereotypes and unjust rhetoric in other spaces. Sulfath also shares how queer voices from within Kerala's Muslim community are emerging and voicing themselves in price marches and other public dialogues and initiatives.Gargi discusses how ill-practices such as ‘conversion therapy' continue to exist that harm the LGBTQI+ community and despite it being outlawed, is often used by families against their own kin. Gargi and Sulfath underline their commitment through Vanaja Collective towards expanding spaces of conversations and support for people from other marginalised backgrounds. We discuss how Malayalam cinema has a long way to go in showcasing stories with feminist characters and queer couples whose love stories do not end in misery or tragic circumstances. Finally, we engage in ways that listeners can support Vanaja Collective's fundraising efforts and stay connected with them. All details are mentioned on MBM's website. You can support Vanaja Collective's ongoing fundraiser by donating through the link here: https://milaap.org/fundraisers/support-the-organisation-4Episode notes:* Kerala student dies in Goa, death puts focus on inhuman 'conversion therapy' on queer people (Cris, The News Minute, May 2020)* ‘Conversion therapy' still continues in India, despite a ban (Sukanya Shaji, The News Minute, August 2023)* Kerala study reveals 45% prevalence of conversion therapy among LGBTQIA+ persons (Cris, The News Minute, February 2023)* Kerala's lesbian couples share heart-warming photos from a memorable get-together (Onmanorama, July 2023)* Queer Representation In Malayalam Cinema: The Past, The Present, And The Possible Future (Rhea F, Feminism In India, July 2023)* The youth of Kerala want to make gay marriage legal (Mathrubhumi, March 2021)* Malayalam films that tried to explore LGBTQ+ representation (Pooja Pillai, Pink Lungi, September 2023)* Movies discussed in the episode:* Desatanakkili Karayarilla (1986)* Sancharram (2004)* Moothon (2019)* The Great Indian Kitchen (2021)* Badhaai Do (2022)* Queerphobia in Kerala: A Student Fights For Gender Identity on College Campus (Smitha TK, The Quint, December 2022)* Kerala: Lesbian Couple's Harrowing Journey Shines Light on Continuing Dangers of ‘Conversion Therapy' (Mrudula Bhavani, The Wire, July 2023)* Kerala lesbian couple separated by parents, united by High Court, drops a viral bridal photoshoot (Shaurya Thapa, DailyO, November 2022)MBM visual identity design by Sunakshi Nigam || Music by Jupneet Singh This is a public episode. Film critics Rahul Desai and Poulomi Das discuss the film BADHAAI DO, "hybrid" masculinity and a bit of actor Tahir Raj Bhasin's golden moment.
After a gap of more than a month, the Hindi film industry resumed theatrical releases this weekend with Badhaai Do, starring Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar. In the latest episode of its show, 'Business of Entertainment', Mint's Lata Jha goes through the financial performance of what's buzzing in the world of entertainment.
This week, drama at the movies was fully ensured with releases like Gehraiyaan & Mahaan on OTT, and Badhaai Do in the theatres. What lived up to expectations, and what was completely unexpected? Listen on to find out.
Bollywood's fixation with humor to narrate stories on taboo subjects seems to be working pretty well so far. So, it comes as no surprise to see Badhaai Do also resort to a lighter tone while highlighting an important issue of homosexuality. Directed by Harshvardhan Kulkarni, Badhaai Do revolves around the story of Shardul and Sumi played effortlessly by Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar, as closeted members of the LGBT community, living together as roommates after they agree to get into a ‘marriage of convenience. The film shows how an individual's sexual orientation defines and decides their fate in society. While Shardul, a police officer, and Sumi, a PT teacher, agree to this arrangement — referred to as a lavender marriage — to shut their families up and get rid of the constant pressure to get married, the journeys they take on with their respective partners eventually lead to several realizations about their realities. The makers deal with the subject in an extremely mature and sensitive manner, and in his attempt to sound witty, at no point does he trivialize the ordeal homosexual people go through. Badhaai Do is an important film that surely starts a conversation, more so for the families of homosexual people, which is the most important takeaway from this film.
Bollywood steadfastly continues on its mission to set “things straight” as far as depicting the LGBTQIA community is concerned. It has almost become a genre of sorts - a strong social message cushioned with desi humour, a terrifically put together ensemble that entertains and then educates. We know the drill all too well by now. Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against films with a social message, but I wish the day arrives soon when the depiction of queer love doesn't have to be “brave” or with some self-conscious additions, like even getting an actor from the North East to play a significant role. High time then that this kind of diversity be so mainstream that the story gets to flow like any other, without being subsumed by the overarching theme of having to deliver a message. Badhaai Do, however, does its job by giving us a couple stuck in a Lavender marriage. There is a reason for fatigue to set in, and it's primarily the trailer. So much information has already been revealed that it almost seems like a synopsis of the whole film in three minutes. We know the main conflict - the gay man marries a lesbian woman. It's an arrangement they agree to in order to escape their parents and the gazillion taunts and questions. The film is set in Dehradun, he is a police officer; she a Physical Education teacher, living like roommates and leading separate lives. Tune in! VO: RJ Stutee

Helmed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni, the writer of Hasee Toh Phasee and director of the forthcoming Badhaai Do, Hunterrr is a truly special film that went largely unnoticed when it released in 2015. This Gulshan Devaiah and Radhika Apte-starrer is an adult romcom with a twist. The film revolves around sex addict Mandar Ponkshe (played by Devaiah), who almost mechanically straddles several female partners with minimal emotional engagement. But when he actually falls for one, he's unable to process the feeling, let alone deal with it. Apart from being quirky comedy, Hunterrr is also a poignant commentary on the repressed Indian stance on carnal affairs. Through Ponkshe's journey of self-realisation, Kulkarni hopes to deliver a complex story of love and lust that is intense and breezy in equal measure. Devaiah belts out a compelling performance and slips into his Ponkshe with much conviction. Playing a single-minded sex addict who preys on vulnerable women may cumulatively colour the character as a depraved individual. But Devaiah's layered portrayal of Ponkshe ensures that one is also able to empathise with his character's unique circumstances. Apte, prior to being dubbed the Netflix girl, delivers an uninhibited performance here and Sai Tamhankar, who also plays an important role, is suitably cast as the housewife with unfulfilled desires. This one may be a film about a man who can't keep it in his pants but it's also a hilarious take on the repressed society we live in. Alright, that's the lost and found film for today's podcast. I shall be back again with another film or show that turned out to be a hidden gem. Until next time, it's your host Nikhil outta here.
