Raiders of the Podcast

This week- two movies about living your life authentically to yourself in the face of societal pressure.     When a performance art trio take up residency at an enigmatic and remote artistic institute, a journalist with gastric issues, Stones, is hired to document their day-today creative process. The trio, led by narcissist Elle di Elle, perform "sonic catering", making ASMR with culinary sounds. Stones finds his issues worsen as he is drawn ever deeper into their petty disagreements, power struggles, and complexly sordid history. A delicacy from Peter Strickland, a filmmaker for acquired tastes, Flux Gourmet.     After a pair of cross country Bible selling Catholic schoolgirls knock on the wrong door, they are pulled into nightmare of torment, fear, and death. Lobo is a dealer and pimp who loves a little bit of excessive violence. Maria is his favorite employee with a habit of killing anyone she is alone with for more than 5 minutes. Catherine and Rebecca are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. When their paths intersect, blood flies and revenge will be doled out without hesitation. The feature debut of writer-director Joseph Guzman, Run! Bitch Run!     All that and Craig, tired of Americans being unable to pronounce his name, makes a not so stunning accusation. Join us, won't you?   Episode 391- Flanger Abuse

Linda vond S5 van The Crown (Netflix) teleurstellend.

James Cameron-Wilson laments a continuing weak UK box office. He welcomes a potential star in Emma Mackey from Sex Education in the film Emily (as in Bronte) but it only made #10 in the chart. He found Flux Gourmet from Peter Strickland engaging but baffling but that film barely troubled the scorers at #91 in the chart. James was happier watching Anais in Love starring Anais Demoustier on DVD, though he found the film all over the place. He hopes that Dwayne Johnson's new film can provide more cheer next week.

Siobhán Harper-Ryan is a Hair & Make-Up Designer who started out as an apprentice in fashion design & millinery in London's Camden Lock, before exploring the world of theatre in the 90s where she found a place within London's Off West-End and the Fringe. In 1999 Siobhán changed course and trained in make-up artistry and has since enjoyed a varied & colourful career, working on a range of TV and film projects. Recently she worked on Sky Atlantic's series I Hate Suzie, as well as Joanna Hogg's films The Souvenir and The Souvenir Part II. The latter for which she just earned a BIFA nomination. She also worked on Joanna's next film The Eternal Daughter, and Peter Strickland's upcoming film Flux Gourmet.  This is my first time chatting to a make-up designer on Best Girl Grip, so as well as chatting about Siobhán's route into make-up artistry, we also go back to basics, discussing how she decides what make-up to use, what goes into creating onscreen looks, particularly for subtle period dramas like The Souvenir and how she establishes a rapport with the actors. We also talk about neurodivergence in the film industry, building confidence and taking time for yourself on the hubbub of a film set.  I hope you enjoy listening to our chat. Make sure to catch The Souvenir Part II when it's released in cinemas on 21st January next year. This is episode 96 of Best Girl Grip.
