Sermon given by Pastor Mark Donaldson on January 19, 2024 at ElmCreek Community Church in Maple Grove, MN. Scripture: Ecclesiastes 8:16-9:12
Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth says Pete Hegseth is not qualified to be America's Secretary of Defense. After her questioning brought his lack of knowledge regarding defense issues to the surface, Senator Duckworth said the hearing “seems to be about whether or not women are qualified to serve in combat…and not about whether or not you are qualified to be Secretary of Defense. And let me just say that the American people need a secretary of defense who's ready to lead on day one. You are not that person." Ouch. The hearing continues today. We Welcome, political analyst and presidential historian John Rothmann to the show to talk politics. With the Southern California wildfires still raging, Eco-journalist Belinda Waymouth talks about worsening Santa Ana winds and the effect of climate change during “It's the Planet Stupid! “

Hello, Hello, Hello! In this very special, if slightly delayed episode, Dhruv & Amartya are joined by returning guest Cris (now "not the token queer representation for QID"), reincarnated host-cum-guest Aryan (from America), and first-time-but-hopefully-recurring-guest Prakhar Patidar, to talk about the film every Indie Awards Circuit talk show and Indian cinephile is currently talking about -- Payal Kapadia's "All We Imagine as Light." Because everyone already seems to have written all sorts of essays and reviews on AWIAL (some of them are linked below!), we decided to expand the discussion beyond that. The first hour (of this 110 min podcast) is dedicated to exploring Payal Kapadia's early short film work, her, at times, overpowering indebtedness to certain filmic styles (namely, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, who is mentioned at least 20 times in this discussion), and how her first feature film, “A Night of Knowing Nothing” (2021), breaks away from that. The second hour involves a full, spoiler-filled discussion of AWIAL – the things we liked about it, the things we didn't, and the things we hope to like more about it on a rewatch. Listen to the full episode to hear us also -- dismiss the all-male Indian Jury who dismissed AWIAL as India's Oscar Entry for its lack of “Indianness” and debate what “Indianness” really is! After “All We Imagine As Light” triumphed at Cannes this year, taking home the Grand Prix, Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia headed to the Locarno Film Festival to serve on the main competition jury alongside the likes of director Jessica Hausner and star Luca Marinelli. While she was in town, we invited her to join us for a chat on LocarnoMeets. Kapadia took us through her journey from “A Night of Knowing Nothing”, her non-fiction masterpiece that won the Best Documentary Prize at Cannes in 2021, through to her new film, which marks a decisive turn to fiction. For Kapadia, the very act of making cinema is a political one, springing from the urgent dynamics of real life in a complex social, political, and class system like India's.

MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN BY BRINGING BACK THE CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE OF EARLY AMERICA: GEORGE WHITEFIELD
IN THIS MESSAGE WE WILL SEE A TOTALLY DIFFERENT JESUS THAN OUR FASTFOOD FREEWILL THEOLOGIANS HAVE PRESENTED TO US. WE MAY BE SHOCKED TO HOW JESUS GETS “UP IN THE GRILL” OF THESE JEWS WHICH BELIEVED ON HIM. THE BONDAGE OF THE WILL JESUS IS TOTALLY A DIFFERENT JESUS THAN THE FASTFOOD FREEWILL JESUS. IN THE BONDAGE OF THE WILL WORLD, EVERY CHURCH IS A SPIRITUAL WAR ZONE AND ITS MEMBERS SHOULD COME TO CHURCH TO SPIRITUALLY REFUEL AND IN LOVE ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER IN THEIR SPIRITUAL WARFARE. JESUS KNEW HE WAS FIGHTING IN A SPIRITUAL WAR FOR HIS LIFE AND THUS HE FOUGHT LIKE A SPIRITUAL WARRIOR. DOES THAT MEAN HE WAS NOT A GOD OF LOVE? ABSOLUTELY NOT! BUT HE KNEW HIS ENEMY AND THE DESTRUCTION HIS ENEMY WAS CAPABLE OF IF HE WAS TO SPEAK THE TRUTH. FORMER MR. MORALITY ALSO KNEW THAT EVERY CHURCH WAS A SPIRITUAL WAR ZONE FOR HE WARNED HIS YOUNG PASTOR TIMOTHY THE FOLLOWING IN 1 TIMOTHY 1: [18] This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest WAR a good WARFARE. 1 TIM. 6: [12] FIGHT the good FIGHT of faith, LAY HOLD on ETERNAL LIFE, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. [2]These things TEACH and EXHORT [3] IF any MAN TEACH OTHERWISE, and consent not to wholesome words, EVEN the WORDS of our LORD JESUS CHRIST, and to the DOCTRINE(ELECTION) which is according to godliness; [4] He “IS” PROUD, KNOWING NOTHING, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, [5] Perverse disputings of MEN of CORRUPT MINDS, and DESTITUTE of the TRUTH, SUPPOSING that GAIN is GODLINESS: FROM SUCH WITHDRAW thyself. [6] But GODLINESS with contentment is great gain. [7] For WE BROUGHT NOTHING into this WORLD, and it is certain we can CARRY NOTHING OUT [8] And HAVING FOOD and RAIMENT let us be therewith CONTENT. [9] But THEY that will be RICH FALL into TEMPTATION and a SNARE, and into many FOOLISH and HURTFUL LUSTS, which DROWN MEN in DESTRUCTION and perdition. [10] For the LOVE of MONEY is the ROOT of ALL EVIL: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. [11] But thou, O man of God, FLEE these things; and FOLLOW after RIGHTEOUSNESS , godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. [12] FIGHT the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. [13] I GIVE thee CHARGE in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; [14] That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. HOPEFULLY THIS MESSAGE WILL BEGIN TO CHANGE THE NARRATIVE OF HOW WE AS AMERICANS SEE JESUS, NOT AN EMASCULATED JESUS, BUT A JESUS THAT KNEW HIS WORDS WERE GOING TO CAUSE NOT ONLY A SPIRITUAL REVOLUTION BUT WOULD UPSET THE NATIONAL APPLE CART AS DID MARTIN LUTHER IN 1517 WHEN HE PUT HIS 95 COMPLAINTS AGAINST THE CATHOLIC CHURCH ON THE DOOR OF THE CASTLE CHURCH IN WITTENBURG, GERMANY AND THEN IN 1524 IN HIS MOST IMPORTANT BOOK ENTITLED ‘BONDAGE OF THE WILL' WROTE THAT FREEWILL IS A FICTION, CULMINATING IN THE PILGRIMS COMING TO AMERICA IN 1620 WITH THE BONDAGE OF THE WILL DOCTRINE. LET US AMERICANS GET BEHIND THE BONDAGE OF THE WILL DOCTRINE OF EARLY AMERICA THAT WAS THE SPIRITUAL BACKBONE OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION IN ORDER TO MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.

Listen in as we explore the profound lessons from this week's Parsha on the assembly of the Tabernacle. We go through a journey of understanding, highlighting the moment when all the carefully crafted components of the Tabernacle are presented to Moses. The inability of the people to assemble it underscores a powerful teaching about the value of humility and the necessity of seeking divine guidance. Join us as we unpack Rashi's commentary and reflect on how this narrative inspires us to acknowledge our limitations and embrace the guidance of the Almighty. This episode is not just a study of ancient texts but an invitation to apply timeless wisdom to our daily lives. This conversation extends beyond the assembly of the Tabernacle, weaving together themes of humility, personal growth, and our innate need for connection. We contemplate how modern technology can both empower and overwhelm us, and why festivals like Pesach serve as crucial reminders of the importance of modesty and gratitude. We share insights into how relationships, whether in marriage or within our professions, are divinely orchestrated opportunities for character development. Discover the beauty of unity and the power of the half shekel metaphor as we discuss why shared joy is a sacred experience. No matter the challenges we face, this episode is a reminder of the constant support and love that Hashem provides. This episode (Ep 6.23) of the Parsha Review Podcast by Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe on Parshas Pekudei is dedicated in Honor of Tzali & Sari Wolbe on the birth of a baby boy & in honor of our Holy Soldiers in the Battlefield and our Torah Scholars in the Study Halls who are fighting for the safety of our nation! The 39 Avoth Melachot book referenced in this episode: https://a.co/d/ecLSb0oDownload & Print the Parsha Review Notes:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ncaRyoH5iJmGGoMZs9y82Hz2ofViVouv?usp=sharingRecorded in the TORCH Centre - Studio B to a live audience on March 12, 2024, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on March 13, 2024_____________DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Twenty-six years ago, for the 35th New York Film Festival, curators Gavin Smith and Mark McElhatten introduced the festival's experimental sidebar, Views from the Avant-Garde.While their inaugural program featured names like Stan Brakhage, Gregory Markopoulos, and Nathaniel Dorsky, it also opened a space where voices experimenting with cinema's language might meet new audiences. In the festival's intervening years, the vocabulary around this type of cinema evolved and Views from the Avant-Garde has since transformed, first into Projections and then into its most recent incarnation, Currents. When Currents was first announced in 2020, it was also the first year of Docs in Orbit, and every year since, it's been where we have encountered gems of the festival to bring into conversation, such as My Mexican Bretzel by Nuria Giménez (NYFF58), A Night of Knowing Nothing by Payal Kapadia (NYFF59), and Rewind & Play by Alain Gomis (NYFF60).So, for this year's edition, we decided to focus more intently on their programming to get a behind-the-scenes look at their curatorial approach. In today's episode, I sit down with the curators of Currents at the 61st New York Film Festival. Our guests are Aily Nash, Rachael Rakes, and Tyler Wilson. They put together an exciting collection of films, which we'll explore, and what sets Currents apart from other programs in New York and abroad. The power of knowing nothing lies in its ability to fuel continuous learning. When we approach life with a humble mindset, acknowledging that we don't have all the answers, we open ourselves up to new perspectives, knowledge, and growth. Embracing our own ignorance creates a space for curiosity and a thirst for knowledge. It encourages us to seek out opportunities to learn from others and to explore different ideas and viewpoints. The willingness to admit our lack of knowledge drives us to constantly seek improvement and expand our understanding of the world. By acknowledging that we know nothing, we paradoxically become open to endless possibilities, fostering a lifelong journey of learning and self-development. Nobody thought we could do it but we made it through our first 10 random movies! We have no notes and are a little more “off the cuff” in this one. How “off the cuff”? There's not much to say really. I watched this film as a kid and remember thinking it made me feel gross. So I never watched it again. Until now. And now, at the ripe age of 22, I feel exactly the same as I did when I was a child. The Master of Disguise is the most misguided excuse for a movie I've ever seen. It's so unfortunate that this movie squanders the potential of several significantly talented people. And it's upsetting that I have to feel so passionately about it, but the truth is this: The Master of Disguise, as of today, is the worst movie I have seen. And I'm sad to admit that. We all hope for winners, this unfortunately isn't one of them. Go watch Dana Carvey's specials. Watch Hitman. Watch the other work these people have done.
