The INDIA bloc's unity is not based on a common ideology but the shared goal of opposing the BJP. This has historically been the formula for alliances, with temporary unity emerging to counter dominant parties, but these coalitions have often been short-lived. As Congress seeks to assert itself in this context, the bloc's survival depends on whether it can remain cohesive through 2029. In Episode 1605 of #CutTheClutter, ThePrint Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta & Political Editor DK Singh discuss the future of a fraught INDIA bloc in the aftermath of the Delhi elections. 'Were Indian Muslims right to reject Babri compromise? Sambhal, Ajmer is what they said would happen. As we all know, even though some Muslims I knew believed that a compromise was worth the effort, the Babri Masjid Action Committee, which claimed to speak for India's Muslims, refused to consider any compromise. It was a game of dominoes, they said. Advani would accept this compromise, make them shift the mosque, and then, two years later, he would lay claim to Kashi and Mathura, and it would all start over again', says Author & Columnist Vir Sanghvi. This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 6th of August and here are today's headlines. The Bangladesh parliament dissolved today, the Parliament's office said as per news agency Reuters. Student protest coordinators had asked for the dissolving by 3 pm local today, pushing for the formation of a new interim government at the earliest. Warning of a “strict programme”, they had asked “revolutionary students to be ready”. Addressing the Rajya Sabha on the ongoing Bangladesh crisis, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar today said that the Indian government is “monitoring the situation with regards to the status of minorities… But will remain deeply concerned till law and order is visibly restored. Our border forces have also been instructed to be exceptionally alert…” “We are in close and continuous touch with the Indian community in Bangladesh through our diplomatic missions,” he said in the House. Earlier in the day, he briefed an all-party meeting in the Parliament on the matter.Amid the recent violent unrest in several British cities, the High Commission of India in the United Kingdom issued an advisory today urging Indian citizens visiting the country to remain vigilant. The advisory read, “Indian travellers would be aware of the recent disturbances in some parts of the United Kingdom. The High Commission of India in London is closely monitoring the situation. Visitors from India are advised to stay vigilant and exercise due caution while travelling to the UK." Far-right activists and anti-racism groups clashed in cities across the United Kingdom last week, following a stabbing attack at a dance class in northwest England earlier in the week, which resulted in three girls being killed and several others injured.Vinesh Phogat achieved a historic victory by defeating Olympic champion Yui Susaki in the ore-quarterfinals. This win is particularly significant as Susaki had not conceded a point during her gold medal run at Tokyo 2020 and remained unbeaten since 2010, only losing three matches to the same opponent until today. Neeraj Chopra qualified for the men's javelin throw final at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a season-best throw of 89.34 meters on his first attempt. This impressive performance, the best across both qualification groups, highlights Chopra's readiness to defend his Tokyo gold medal.Around a month after being discharged, senior BJP leader L K Advani was admitted to Delhi's Apollo Hospital again today. The 96-year-old is stable and under observation, according to sources in the know of the matter. Advani has been admitted under the care of neurologist Dr Vinit Suri. Days before his admission at Apollo Hospital last month, Advani was also admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

It is not often that an author and his editor strike up a relationship that survives forty years of epistolary exchanges and intellectual sparring. The strangely enduring and occasionally fractious friendship that developed between the famously outspoken historian Ramachandra Guha and his reticent editor Rukun Advani is the subject of his new literary memoir. It started in Delhi in the early 1980s, when Guha was an unpublished PhD scholar, and Advani a greenhorn editor with the Oxford University Press. It blossomed through the 1990s, when Guha grew into a pioneering historian of the environment and of cricket, while also writing his biography of Verrier Elwin. Over these years, Advani was Guha's most constant confidant, his most reliable reader. He encouraged him to craft and refine the literary style for which Guha became internationally known. Four decades later, though he no longer publishes his books, Advani remains Guha's most trusted literary adviser. Yet they also disagree ferociously on politics, human nature, and the nature of their commitment to India. They usually make up – because it just wouldn't do to allow such an odd relationship to die. In this episode of BIC Talks, built around letters and emails between an outgoing and occasionally combative scholar and a reclusive editor prone to private outbursts of savage sarcasm, Ramachandra Guha discusses his new book, The Cooking of Books: A Literary Memoir. This episode is adapted from an in-person event that took place at the BIC premises in early February 2024. Subscribe to the BIC Talks Podcast on your favourite podcast app! Satyaprem Ki Katha, the new Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani movie, left us incensed. We discuss the many ways in which the movie is actively anti-feminist; its horrific treatment of Advani's character, the obvious perspective problem, and its casual disregard for very real, and very delicate themes. We also talk about its triggering tone, the film's last-minute rug-pull, and the potentially dangerous ideas that it propagates about retribution. But we lose all hope when we consider the mostly positive reactions that the film received upon its theatrical release. — Hosted by Akhil Arora and Rohan Naahar, The Long Take is fully bootstrapped. When I'm on service these days there is inevitably a moment when a resident says “Patient so-and-so is on X” - and I have absolutely no idea what X is. Modern subspecialist practice advances at such a remarkably rapid pace, it can be hard to keep up. In this context, we're excited to hear from infectious disease experts and nephrologists about updates in the care of older adults. Sonali Advani and Lona Mody talk about their recent JAGS article highlighting three recent articles that every clinician caring for older adults should be aware of in the treatment of infectious diseases (hint: I've never finished a course of antibiotics, and maybe your patients don't need that full course either). Devika Nair and Rasheeda Hall talk about their JAGS article highlighting updates from nephrology in the care of older adults, including a link to this new eGFR calculator that does NOT include race. We have a discussion about the decision to remove race, a social construct, from clinical risk calculators (though I'm not 100% sold that race should always be removed - if removal is likely to worsen disparities for example - at least until a superior race-blind calculator can be developed). These articles are part of a new series called Clin-Star Corner, a new series in JAGS that reviews practice changing articles in the care of older adults. And yeah, they made me sing a Miley Cyrus song…(but not this hilarious parody about UTIs). Enjoy! -@AlexSmithMD
