How do you build a globally scaled seafood company rooted in ancient Japanese techniques, humane animal treatment, and radical transparency – all before the age of 26? Meet Saif Khawaja, the founder and CEO of Seremoni, a startup that's reinventing the seafood industry from the ground up. Launched in 2024, Seremoni is a vertically integrated company setting a new benchmark for quality and ethics in seafood by merging time-honored Japanese craft with cutting-edge technology. To bring his vision to life, Saif assembled a dream team: engineers from SpaceX, veterans from premium seafood brands, and small-scale fishermen from across the globe. His mission? To build a new kind of supply chain – one powered by empathy, precision engineering, and economic equity – and to make Michelin-quality seafood accessible to everyone. In this episode, Saif shares how a Wharton thesis and a philosophical reckoning ignited a radical idea. He walks us through the early days of grit and experimentation, the challenges of leading teams twice his age, and why he believes world-changing companies are often born from deep moral conviction, not spreadsheets. Show notes: 0:25: Saif Khawaja, Founder & CEO, Seremoni – Saif opens up about how reading Peter Singer's essay “If Fish Could Scream” profoundly impacted him and inspired the development of Seremoni and how his hands-on experience as a commercial fisherman exposed him to artisanal methods and the biology of how stress affects flavor and decomposition in fish. He talks about how the company's tools and robotics scale ikejime techniques in the U.S., pursuing vertical integration to ensure quality and pay fishermen more fairly, and how he convinced investors, chefs and retailers to buy into his vision. Saif also discusses his management of a growing team of over 30 people, and how he is building a values-driven movement that is guided by a strong moral compass. She's even given directions in the video. In worse news, the priest there wants the police to take action because the goddess Urvashi has nothing to do with actor Urvashi. In this aptly-named episode, our hosts Sweet T and Saif try to figure out what exactly is wrong with people. They seem to be easily influenced by the Bee Gees and big media (0:20). This creates non-skeptical followers who are complacent with whatever the algorithm gives them (10:05). This cycle generates uneducated or uniformed consumers who continue to suckle the tit of big corporations (22:56). We hope that we'll inspire you to think for yourself (31:28). If you are interested in esoteric topics, please check it out! ~ Many thanks, StephanieIn 2021, Liana Saif joined the Centre for the Study of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents at the University of Amsterdam as Assistant Professor in the History of Esotericism in the Middle Ages. Liana's work focuses on Islamic esotericism and the occult sciences, with a special interest in the exchange of esoteric and occult knowledge between the Islamic and Latin inhabited lands. Her book The Arabic Influences on Early Modern Occult Philosophy was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2015. She is currently preparing a long-awaited critical translation from Arabic into English of the grimoire known as the Picatrix. A few of her research projects include the tenth-century secret brotherhood known as The Brethren of Purity, and the pseudo-Aristotelian Hermetica. She also worked as a project curator at the British Museum, deepening her interest in the material and artistic manifestations of the occult and the esoteric.Liana is a founding member of the European Network for the Study of Islam and Esotericism (ENSIE). Editorial roles include being a board member for Aries: Journal for the Study of Western Esotericism and Brill's Islamic Translation Series, and an associate editor of the journal Early Science and Medicine. In this interview, Liana speaks at length about Islamic Esotericism. This is an area of esoteric history that I haven't yet touched upon, so I was happy that Liana agreed to share her extensive knowledge on this topic. Some highlights of our discussion include: why the views and discourse of Islam within the area of “Western” esotericism is problematic; academic debates and disagreements in this area, how Liana defines Islamic esotericism, including paradigms and social orientations; and why the relationship between the idea of an eternal truth and the Islamic law raises anxiety in how Islamic esotericism is interpreted. Liana also discusses her research that deals with the 17th century Maltese inquisition, in particular the trial of Sellem the Moor, a Muslim enslaved person who was accused of being a magician. This work is part of a larger volume called Magic in Malta, and Liana examines this trial on three interconnected levels, and is a down-to-earth, practical example of how magic was being used by people at this time. “The Day of Distinction (Yawm al-Furqan): Reflections on Faith, Sacrifice, and Victory”Introduction: 17th Ramadan – Yawm al-Badr• Significance: The 17th of Ramadan marks the historic Battle of Badr, the greatest military victory of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.• Ramadan has historically been a month of significant victories:• Battle of Badr (2 AH)• Conquest of Makkah (Fath Makkah) (8 AH)BeQuranic is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Why Badr Matters• Known in the Qur'an as Yawm al-Furqan (Day of Distinction), clearly differentiating truth from falsehood.• Sahaba who participated (Ahlul Badr, 313 companions) are ranked highest among companions.• Guaranteed paradise (Hadith: “Do as you please; you have been forgiven.”)• Prophet ﷺ honoured them with special recognition even in funeral prayers (six takbirs instead of four).• Angels who participated were also the highest-ranking angels, led by Jibreel (AS).Historical Context: Prelude to Badr• Migration (Hijrah) forced Muslims to abandon homes, wealth, and possessions in Makkah.• Quraysh confiscated Muslim properties, using these resources for lucrative trade caravans (Rehlat ash-Shita'i was-Saif).• Muslims aimed to reclaim their rightful property by intercepting a Qurayshi caravan led by Abu Sufyan, triggering events leading to Badr. From Caravan Raid to Full-scale Battle• 313 Muslims set out initially to intercept a lightly guarded caravan, not expecting battle.• Quraysh gathered 1,300 soldiers, heavily armed, under leadership of Abu Jahl, aiming to decisively crush Muslims.Intervention by Shaytan (Iblis)• Quraysh initially hesitant to leave Makkah undefended due to fear of attack from Banu Bakar tribe.• Shaytan appeared disguised as Suraqah ibn Malik of Banu Bakar, assuring Quraysh of safety, urging them to fight.• Quranic Reference: (Surah Al-Anfal) highlighting how Shaytan deceived and encouraged Quraysh to battle. Thanks for reading BeQuranic! This post is public so feel free to share it.Strategic Decisions and Divine Support• Prophet ﷺ strategically positioned Muslims at wells, guided by advice from companion Hubab ibn al-Mundhir.• Muslims experienced miraculous comfort:• Peaceful sleep despite imminent danger.• Gentle rain provided stability, comfort, and firm ground.• Quraysh, by contrast, experienced discomfort:• Heavy rain, causing fatigue and difficult terrain.Prophet's ﷺ Prayer and Trust in Allah• Prophet ﷺ spent the night in fervent du'a:• Notably repeating “Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum” (O Ever-Living, O Sustainer).• Made urgent du'a, recognizing critical significance: “If this small group is destroyed, Islam itself will vanish.”• Encouragement from Abu Bakr comforting the Prophet ﷺ, assuring him of Allah's help. The Battle: Angels Descend• Muslims arranged strategically (in straight lines), introducing new disciplined military tactics unfamiliar to Arabs.• Jibreel and angels appeared, visibly fighting alongside Muslims, terrifying Quraysh.• Shaytan (in form of Suraqah) fled upon seeing angels, declaring: “I see what you see not; I fear Allah.”Outcomes and Consequences of Badr• Decisive Victory: Muslims achieved overwhelming victory.• Quraysh lost over 70 key leaders (e.g., Abu Jahl, Umayyah ibn Khalaf).• Muslims had minimal casualties (~14 martyrs).• Islam recognized as a significant force across Arabian Peninsula for the first time, marking the beginning of its rise.Lessons & Reflections from Badr• Tawakkul (Reliance on Allah): Trusting Allah fully despite overwhelming odds.• Sincerity and Sacrifice: Muslims left everything behind purely for Allah's sake.• Unity in Diversity: Prophet ﷺ strategically utilized companions' diverse backgrounds (Muhajirin & Ansar) for strength.• Recognition of True Heroes: Encouraged knowing Sahaba (e.g., Mus'ab ibn Umair, Ali ibn Abi Talib, Hamza ibn Abdul Muttalib) as genuine role models, over fictional or superficial heroes.Practical Takeaways:• Tonight's Remembrance: Emulate Prophet's du'a:• Recite “Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum”, seeking Allah's aid for personal and collective struggles.• Reflect deeply on the legacy and lessons of Badr.• Renew personal commitments towards Islam, inspired by Sahaba's exemplary courage and sacrifice.BeQuranic is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Conclusion: Honouring Ahlul Badr• Recognize the importance of commemorating and honouring our Islamic heritage.• Tonight, spend extra effort in worship, remembrance, and reflection on the spirit of Badr.BeQuranic is a reader-supported publication. In an interview, she emphasized the party's ability to remain stable despite fears after Arvind Kejriwal's resignation. Atishi believes the biggest achievement of her four-month tenure has been maintaining governance stability, despite the political challenges posed by the LG.Chalapati, a 62-year-old Maoist leader, was killed in an encounter with security forces near the Chhattisgarh-Odisha border. Known for his rapid rise through the ranks, Chalapati orchestrated several high-profile attacks, including the 2018 killing of TDP MLA Kidari Sarveswara Rao. Hailing from Andhra Pradesh, he was believed to be the mastermind behind the deadly attack in Araku Valley, which also targeted former MLA Siveri Soma. His wife, Aruna, allegedly led the Maoist group involved in the murders. On his first day as U.S. President, Donald Trump signed an executive order limiting immigration laws, including birthright citizenship. The new policy restricts automatic U.S. citizenship to children born on American soil, requiring at least one parent to be a U.S. citizen, green card holder, or military member. This change may impact millions of Indian-Americans, complicating their pursuit of permanent residency, as birthright citizenship was a crucial pathway to citizenship for many foreign-born children.Elon Musk faced backlash for a hand gesture during a celebration of Donald Trump's inauguration, which some online users compared to a Nazi salute. However, a leading antisemitism tracker clarified that the gesture appeared to be one of enthusiasm. Musk dismissed the criticism, calling it a "tired" attack. During the event at Washington's Capital One Arena, Musk energetically pumped his arms and shouted "Yesssss," drawing cheers from the crowd, while the hand gesture sparked controversy online. This was the Catch Up on 3 Things by the Indian Express.

Love Aaj Kal turns 15 years old! This movie was quite the rage back then and the fashions in it quite the moment. Has it held up? Yes for one of us, no for the other. Mostly we agree on Saif's fab performance, DP's okay one, and spend a few moments smiling happily as we think of Patron Saint Rishi Kapoor. Important notes: • Do not date your boss. • Bridge is not a job. • For a film about a hetero love story, is this actually about the two men who see themselves in each other? • Saif rocks a turban. • We are all old. Guest: David LaBianca, Senior Engineering Director, Google Topics: The universe of AI risks is broad and deep. We've made a lot of headway with our SAIF framework: can you give us a) a 90 second tour of SAIF and b) share how it's gotten so much traction and c) talk about where we go next with it? The Coalition for Secure AI (CoSAI) is a collaborative effort to address AI security challenges. What are Google's specific goals and expectations for CoSAI, and how will its success be measured in the long term? Something we love about CoSAI is that we involved some unexpected folks, notably Microsoft and OpenAI. How did that come about? How do we plan to work with existing organizations, such as Frontier Model Forum (FMF) and Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF)? Does this also complement emerging AI security standards? AI is moving quickly. How do we intend to keep up with the pace of change when it comes to emerging threat techniques and actors in the landscape? What do we expect to see out of CoSAI work and when? What should people be looking forward to and what are you most looking forward to releasing from the group? We have proposed projects for CoSAI, including developing a defender's framework and addressing software supply chain security for AI systems. How can others use them? In other words, if I am a mid-sized bank CISO, do I care? How do I benefit from it? An off-the-cuff question, how to do AI governance well? The (still technically unofficial) leader of Al Qaeda, Saif al-Adel, wrote an article under a pseudonym calling for people around the world to flock to Afghanistan for training to conduct attacks against “the Zionists.” Clear efforts by Al Qaeda to capitalize on the conflict in Gaza — but is the threat credible? Does al Qaeda in Afghanistan even have the means? Yes and yes, say Bill and Will Selber, LWJ contributor and retired Middle East Foreign Area Officer. They discuss how we give an enemy time and space to innovate and then ignore their threats at our own peril.
Bill and co-host Caleb catch up on the latest goings on related to the global jihad, including why the Islamic State's Moscow attack should surprise no one; Shabaab's rampage in Somalia and the prospect for the state's survival; rumors that Saif al-Adel's son has died; and fireworks on the Af-Pak border when the Pakistanis launched airstrikes apparently targeting members of the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban.
