As 2025 winds down, Michael Rogers, director of the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Citrus Research and Education Center (CREC), took time to recognize Chris Oswalt during the December All In For Citrus podcast. Oswalt is retiring from his post as a citrus Extension agent, which he's held for nearly 30 years. He served Polk and Hillsborough counties. “I quickly got connected with Chris when I first came to CREC in 2004,” Rogers said. “He was a big help to me, especially earlier in my career. He has helped get many new faculty pointed in the right direction when they come on board. He is down to earth and grounded in reality, and growers trust him because of that. We wish him well in retirement.” Rogers also took the occasion to remind growers to engage with the citrus agents in Florida because they can be a valuable resource. Find your citrus agent here. “If you've not had an agent out to your operation, invite them to come out,” Rogers said. “Get them involved and visiting you in the field. It will help the agents develop their programs and serve you better.” One of the citrus agents, Edwin Gutierrez, also joins the podcast to discuss ways to prepare groves for winter and potential freeze events. He covers DeSoto, Hardee and Manatee counties. Some of his key points include making sure trees are as healthy as possible going into winter because a healthy tree will withstand a freeze better. He also advises growers to check their irrigation systems regularly to ensure they are operating properly. Irrigation is the main line of defense to protect trees during a freeze. Muhammad Shahid, UF/IFAS assistant professor at the North Florida Research and Education Center, addresses winter preparations for the cold-hardy region. Freezes are far more regular occurrences in that area. Shahid discusses his research with silicon, which appears to boost citrus trees' resistance to freezes. He also tells how a new mandarin variety, nicknamed Greenie, may have found a home in the cold-hardy region. The podcast is partnership between UF/IFAS and AgNet Media.

India's rural areas are developing at an extraordinary rate, and it poses both challenges and extraordinary opportunities to rethink development at a large scale. Across the OECD, over nine in ten households are now connected to the Internet, but in rural regions connectivity still lags behind, with only about 89% of rural households having even a basic broadband connection. https://www.oecd.org/en/publications/2024/11/oecd-digital-economy-outlook-2024-volume-2_9b2801fc.html India reflects these contrasts in its own way, but the speed of change is remarkable. Over the four years ending in December 2024, internet penetration in rural India surged from 59% to 78%, a jump that outpaced urban growth, which rose from 77% to 90% over the same period. https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/industry/indias-rural-subscribers-to-primarily-drive-arpu-growth-in-fy26-crisil/121130745 Recorded live from the OECD Rural Development Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Shayne MacLachlan speaks with Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, Secretary to the Government in the Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, about how India's fascinating track-record of rural transformation can offer practical lessons to policymakers everywhere. Tune in to hear how one of the world's most dynamic rural transformations is unfolding and what it means for the future of development. Dr. Shahid currently serves as Secretary to the Government, Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (Local Self-Government). Over the course of his distinguished public service career, he has held several key leadership positions, including Secretary, Tribal Affairs, J&K Government; CEO, Mission Youth J&K; Managing Director, Skill Development & Livelihood Initiatives; and multiple tenures as District Development Commissioner/District Magistrate in Srinagar, Rajouri, Bandipora, Leh, Udhampur, Kathua, and Reasi. He has also served as Additional Secretary in the Chief Minister's Office, Director, Information & Public Relations, Managing Director, J&K Tourism Development Corporation, Additional Secretary, Planning & Development, Special Officer, Relief & Reconstruction Leh, and SDM Nowshera. Internationally, Dr. Shahid is recognized as a resource person on mobile indigenous communities, transhumance, and migration. He is a member of the UN Working Group for the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists and has represented India in international collaborations on pastoralism and migratory indigenous peoples in Albania (2021), Ethiopia (2021), and Italy (2022). In this episode, Omar Shahid Hamid — former police officer and acclaimed crime-fiction author — reflects on how years spent in Karachi's counter-terrorism and law enforcement shaped his storytelling. From The Prisoner to The Party Worker, his novels explore the moral grey zones between justice, power, and survival. Hamid discusses how real-world violence and political corruption translate into fiction, why Karachi itself feels like a living character in his work, and how he balances authenticity with sensitivity when writing about the city's underbelly. He also examines how South Asian crime narratives are evolving in the global literary scene, and what universal human truths lie beneath his stories of crime, loyalty, and redemption. In this episode of the District 3 Podcast, Irvin sits down with two passionate child care entrepreneurs — Shahid Sheikh of Little Martians Learning Center and Jenny Castillo of Casa Castillo — to dig into the mounting crisis facing early childhood providers across Arkansas.Recently, the Arkansas Department of Education announced sweeping changes to the School Readiness Assistance Program, introducing sliding-scale copayments for families and revised reimbursement rates for providers. Arkansas Advocate While the stated goal is to reduce the child care waitlist and create longer-term fiscal sustainability, many in the sector warn these cuts and cost shifts may push dozens of local centers to close, force layoffs, and reduce care access — especially in underserved communities. Arkansas AdvocateIn our conversation, Shahid and Jenny share:How their centers are being affected by the new copays and reimbursement changesWhat the survey of child care providers is telling us about closures and financial strain (including projected $37–38 million in revenue shortfalls statewide) Arkansas AdvocateThe human stories behind the numbers: parents who might quit work or drop out of the workforce because child care becomes unaffordableTheir calls to state leaders: from advocating for caps on family copayments (ideally 7% of income) to urging immediate funding support and legislative actionHow they're organizing across the state — and how listeners and local communities can amplify the push for stronger child care policyTune in to hear a candid, frontline perspective on what's at stake — not just for child care owners, but for working families, children, and the future of Arkansas' workforce.
India's growing population of free-ranging dogs has become one of the most complex and divisive conservation challenges of our time. In this episode of the Think Wildlife Podcast, we dive deep into the intersection of animal welfare, public health, and biodiversity conservation with ecologist Arshyaan Shahid, who unpacks the ecological, legal, and ethical dilemmas surrounding India's 60 million stray dogs. The discussion begins with the recent Supreme Court order directing Delhi authorities to relocate all dogs into shelters—an unprecedented move that sparked national debate among animal rights, animal activism, and conservation communities. Arshyaan explains why the free-ranging dog population in India has exploded to over 60 million, how human-subsidized feeding, waste mismanagement, and lack of predators have allowed dog numbers to soar, and why sterilization alone cannot solve the crisis. We explore how dogs, once companions of humans, have transformed into powerful ecological disruptors. Free-ranging dogs now threaten over 80 wildlife species, including 31 listed as IUCN Red List threatened species. From attacking blackbuck, chital, and great Indian bustards to competing with jackals, hyenas, and vultures, their impact extends deep into India's biodiversity hotspots. Arshyaan discusses how dogs act as invasive wild canids, spreading diseases like rabies and parvovirus, hybridizing with wolves, and altering predator-prey dynamics. But this is not just an ecological crisis—it's also a public health crisis. India records over 3.7 million dog bites annually, with Delhi alone reporting 68,000 cases in 2024. With 36% of global rabies deaths occurring in India and over 20,000 human deaths each year, the connection between public health, urban ecology, and animal welfare has never been clearer.Arshyaan dissects why sterilization campaigns—despite their humanitarian intent—struggle to reach the 70–90% coverage required for meaningful control. He reveals the enormous financial burden of sterilizing 700,000 dogs in Delhi alone, the vacuum effect that replenishes removed populations, and the time lag before any measurable impact. He also highlights the ethical complexities of culling, the global backlash against mass euthanasia, and the moral dilemma between compassionate conservation and ecological necessity. The conversation moves to the Supreme Court's evolving position, from its controversial order to relocate dogs, to a more balanced capture–sterilize–vaccinate–release (CSVR) approach inspired by Dutch models. Yet, Delhi's limited infrastructure—shelters for barely 5% of its 800,000 dogs—makes large-scale implementation nearly impossible.Arshyaan and host Anish Banerjee examine the difficult trade-offs between animal rights and biodiversity loss, exploring whether mass shelters improve or worsen welfare, and why unmanaged urban ecology and waste management remain the root of the crisis. They also discuss responsible pet ownership, microchipping, strict anti-abandonment laws, and urban planning reforms that could finally bring India closer to sustainable biodiversity conservation. Finally, Arshyaan shares insights from his upcoming PhD research on mapping dog aggression hotspots and fostering collaboration between the public, policymakers, and animal welfare advocates to balance compassion with science-based conservation. This episode asks a difficult question—can India protect both its dogs and its wildlife without compromising public safety or compassion?About the HostAnish Banerjee is an early career ecologist, with a MSc in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation from Imperial College London. In this episode of Life Points with Ronda, I share my reflections on one of the most powerful voices I've encountered on YouTube — Brother Shahid Bolsen of the Middle Nation channel. His fearless commentary has challenged me to think deeper about issues that shape our world: from the containment of Black History Month, to racism as the divided psyche of the West, to the false promises of artificial intelligence, to the truth that whoever disrupts a system controls it. I also explore his recent commentary on the death of Charlie Kirk — not to honor Kirk, but to highlight how Shahid exposed the exploitation of public tragedy, the hypocrisy of selective mourning, and the disturbing reality that even free speech is being censored when it offends power. His reminder that three other lives were lost that same day, and that over 1,800 people had already died this year to date, puts everything into perspective. This episode is also my personal thank you to Shahid Bolsen. If you're listening anywhere in the world, I encourage you to check out Middle Nation on YouTube. I have never joined anyone's channel membership before, but his is one I will be supporting — because his voice, his clarity, and his courage are undeniable. Tune in for a raw, honest, and deeply reflective conversation about truth, disruption, and the power of voices that refuse to be silenced.

Gaza is experiencing a man-made famine as Israel blocks the supply of almost all humanitarian aid. By the start of August, Israeli soldiers had killed nearly 1,400 Palestinians as they were looking for food. Most of the killings happened near sites managed by the so-called Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, the GHF. The GHF was sponsored by the Trump administration earlier this year to replace legitimate aid organizations with a track record of operating in Palestine. For this week's episode, we spoke to Akbar Shahid Ahmed of the Huffington Post about the famine and recent massacres in Gaza. Akbar has been a guest on the show several times before. Listen to the rest of this premium episode by subscribing at patreon.com/knowyourenemy.We don't do too many New York City-focused episodes on Know Your Enemy, but Zohran Mamdani's decisive win in the Democratic mayoral primary last month certainly warrants this one. The thirty-three year old democratic socialist, state assemblyman, and Muslim of Indian descent born in Uganda, ended up running away with it, defeating the runner-up, former governor and sex pest Andrew Cuomo, by over ten points—and, when all the ballots finally were counted, set a record by receiving the most votes of any candidate for mayor in a Democratic primary in the city's history. Our format in this episode is a little different. In the first half, your podcast co-hosts lay out the basics of Zohran's victory, from Zohran's biography to the final tallies to our impressions of the candidate and his message. In the second half, we're joined by veteran progressive campaign strategist Waleed Shahid to get more of an insider's take on Zohran's achievement: the campaign's stunningly effective turnout operation, which brought out young voters in droves; how he withstood the disgusting way he was attacked as an anti-semite for his protesting Israel's genocide in Gaza; the substance of his pitch to New Yorkers, and it's contrast with Cuomo's uninspiring, mostly negative campaign; the deranged Islamophobic attacks on Zohran since he became the Democratic nominee, and not only from the right; the role of current NYC comptroller and a progressive, Jewish candidate in the race, Brad Lander, who cross-endorsed Zohran, refused to punch left, and joyfully campaigned with Zohran in the final weeks leading up to the election; and more!Sources:Waleed Shahid, "How Broadcast Media Covered Zohran Mamdani's Win," Waleed's Substack, July 3, 2025Matthew Miles Goodrich, "It's...the Politics of No Translation," Something Different, July 2, 2025Sam Adler-Bell, "Can DSA Go the Distance?" HelixTalk - Rosalind Franklin University's College of Pharmacy Podcast
In this episode, we discuss the very early stages of drug targets and drug development with Dr. Mohd Shahid, PhD. Dr. Shahid's research involves the IER3 gene, which is an important modulator of the body's inflammatory response via its action in major immune cells, including macrophages and T-cells, and plays a role in metabolic disorders such as obesity, diabetes, and atherosclerosis, revealing a previously unknown function of this protein. Key Concepts Drug development is a multi-decade journey – human clinical trials occur very late in the process. Drug development often starts before a drug molecule is even conceived by identifying potential drug targets. Chronic inflammation is important for a variety of diseases, including obesity and atherosclerosis. Dr. Shahid's work focuses on a specific gene, Immediate Early Response 3 Gene (IER3 or IEX-1), and its role in modulating the inflammatory response in these disease states. The research process frequently leads to unexpected discoveries and new lines of inquiry. With Dr. Shahid, his work in obesity and inflammation actually led to a new understanding of the IER3's role in the interplay between macrophages, inflammation, and energy expenditure.
