Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899) is both a scathing critique of European imperialism and a reminder that all humans have the capacity to succumb to the heart of darkness. It also is not without controversy, as people have been debating it's meaning and essence for over a century now. What exactly is the heart of darkness? Was the Belgian Congo a unique circumstance of imperialism or just another example of human nature at work? Is the text of Heart of Darkness a legitimate critique of the imperial mindset, or is it actually just upholding the very norms and imperialistic conventions it is ostensibly dismantling? This is the first episode in a series covering the book. It provides an overview of the historical context of European imperialism in Africa, including the ivory and rubber boom in the Congo. We also set the ideological stage for the narrative of the book. The civilizing mission is discussed and we wonder if we are all just prisoners of our own historical moment? Was european imperialism just another cycle of histories that have already happened long ago? We also dive into Marlow's origins, back story, and recruitment with "The Company." -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! Love Island USA Aftersun Aftershow Ep 2 – June 20, 2026 Aftersun is back as Kirsten MacInnis recaps week 2 of Love Island USA Aftersun, with tensions rising in the villa and Casa Amor on the horizon. This episode zeroes in on complicated love triangles, emotional exits, and the blurred line between staying open and showing respect. With fresh departures and new relationships up in the air, Kirsten takes listeners inside post-dumping reactions, growing social media followings, and honest conversations about what's really happening behind the scenes. Kirsten breaks down the bubbling drama among islanders: the Caleb, Kenzie, and Corbin triangle (and age gap debates), and how Melanie earns respect for waiting to pursue Corbin. Sincere's double-talking and repeated use of pet names draw commentary on gameplay versus honesty, especially as Casa Amor looms. The exit interviews with Sol and Gabe offer a candid look at hurt feelings, adjusting to real life, and confusion over social media storylines. Kirsten also brings attention to the challenges Black women face in conversations about hair on reality TV, and the surprising spike in islanders' Instagram followers once they leave the villa. Love triangles dissected, with honest takes on whether exploring new connections is playing the game or crossing lines Sol calls out the lack of openness in the villa, pushing listeners to rethink alliances and connections Discussion of Gabe's social media blowup. Does following a political figure matter for the show? Fresh insights into the emotional impact of dumping, from FaceTime reunions to DMs and exes popping up Predictions on which couples might survive Casa Amor, and which pairings are heading for trouble With Casa Amor set to shake up alliances, which islanders are ready for real risk and who might get left behind? Love Island USA Daily – After Aftersun Ep 1 – June 13, 2026 Love Island USA Season 8 gets a whole new layer as Kirsten MacInnis analyzes the debut of After Sun, the fresh post-villa talk show hosted by Ciara Miller and Tefi Pessoa. This episode peels back the curtain on what happens when islanders face the real world, phone in hand and social media buzzing, right after elimination. With Sean and Bea fresh off their exits, fans get an unfiltered look at nerves, backlash, and the search for connection beyond the villa. Kirsten walks listeners through Sean's whirlwind reunion with his phone, from wading through 700+ DMs to dealing with unexpected shade from the mayor of Bethlehem. Family FaceTimes reveal vulnerability as Sean processes both support and criticism. Meanwhile, Bea tackles questions of identity and representation, finding joy in seeing herself as more than a “diversity hire” and candidly discussing her connection with Gabe along with her place in disability and LGBTQ+ conversations online. Ciara and Tefi's chemistry as After Sun hosts sets a new tone, blending humor, honesty, and listener engagement for a deeper dive into cast dynamics. Key discussion points: Sean facing online scrutiny, family support, and the awkwardness of local politics crossing over with reality TV fame Bea's response to social media rumors, her pride in disability representation, and the challenges of being misread by the public Missed connections: the potential sparks between Sean and Anaya and why they never lit up Behind-the-scenes drama on gossip, style (KC's DIY looks get a major callout), and playful “bone collector” confessions Ongoing struggles with honesty and vulnerability, especially among the guys determined to protect their “good guy” image Kirsten's recap asks how vulnerability, identity, and public perception reshape Love Island's endgame. Once upon a Time in Cinema Der Filmpodcast

As the evidence of atrocities in the Congo Free State became impossible to ignore, direct African resistance developed in numerous places around the Congo. As this was happening, a large and sophisticated human rights campaign developed around some courageous informants, journalists, and human rights activists. King Leopold II of Belgium then developed a response in one of the first modern versions of an information/misinformation shadow war in the age of mass media.  This episode is Part 5 in a series on the Belgium Congo. It discusses African Resistance to the Congo Free State, E.D. Morel's media campaign to end the atrocities in the Congo, other informants like Roger Casement, King Leopold's response to the accusations, the role of media in shaping perceptions in Belgium, the most successful feat of pimpery of all time, and why much of this seems very modern. With King Leopold II of Belgium now in full control of the Belgian Congo, the extraction of ivory and other resources could begin. The story of the plunder of the Congo is so brutal and unbelievable, and at times so hard to believe, that it was once said that "to tell the full story it would have to be fiction." In the early period of the Congo Free State, forced labor and resource extraction ultimately led to atrocities and destruction, but the terror was far from over. This episode is Part 3 in a series on the Belgian Congo. It gives an overview of Congo's rich natural resources, and the ivory boom in the late 1800's that contributed to atrocities. It discusses Leopold's style of rule and role in overseeing the carnage, the development of the ivory "trade" in the Congo, the beginnings of mass death, and the origins of early protest movements and dissent against the state, including from missionaries like George Washington Williams. As European imperialism heated up in Africa in the late 1800's, King Leopold II of Belgium put into motion one of the most ambitious and villainous plans in all of European history - the theft of the entire Congo. Utilizing the work of explorer Henry Morton Stanley, European animus towards the Afro-Arab Slave Trade, the creation of dubious committees and associations, international lobbying of governments, public relations campaigns, and bogus treaties with the people of Congo, Leopold understood that "...we must be cautious, clever and quick to act. I would not expose myself to displeasing the English or letting escape a good opportunity to get some of this beautiful African cake." In 1885, the countries of Europe gave their blessing to Leopold's slice of cake at the Berlin Conference. This episode is Part 2 in a series on the Belgian Congo. From 1885 to 1908, King Leopold II of Belgium owned the Congo as his own personal colony. What transpired there over the course of his reign has credibly been called "the vilest scramble for loot that ever disfigured the history of human conscience." Forced labor, slavery, disease, destruction, and destabliziation led to millions of deaths in one of the lesser known mass trauma events in human history. This is the story of the Congo Free State in Central Africa.  This episode is Part 1 in a series on the Belgian Congo. It takes a look at the origins of humanity in Africa, the Congo as a geographic and human region, the Congo River, the development of agriculture, slavery, and society in the Congo before European arrival, the Indian Ocean Slave Trade vs. the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, the arrival of the Portuguese in the Congo, the motivations for African Imperialism, the intensification of the slave trade as a result of European arrival, the resulting disruption and destabilization, and more. Future episodes will discuss Leopold's acquisition of the Congo as a colony, the resulting atrocities, resistance and reform movements, and the full story of the Congo Free State.  -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! The Odyssey concludes with release, purification, and contradiction. A legendary bow and arrow contest sets the stage for Odysseus' rampage through the suitors who tormented his household for so long. The results of this explosion of violence and the conclusion of the story have been discussed and debated for millenia. This episode looks at books 21-24 of The Odyssey, analyzing themes of memory, purification, cycles of violence, animal instinct, fate and coincidence, and more. Homer's The Odyssey is one of the oldest and most enduring stories in all of civilization. Set in the aftermath of the legendary Trojan War, Odysseus, one of it's great heroes, has been lost at sea for decades. As he struggles to return home, the epic poem asks us important questions about history, memory, choice, kindness, leadership, violence, and much more.
