Australia correspondent Karen Middleton looks at the return of five of the nine Australians who were convicted over heroin smuggling in Bali and a flesh-eating bug in NSW.
The remaining Bali 9 members who had been given life sentences over the 2005 attempt to smuggle heroin from Bali to Australia, have now been returned home. We look at what landed them in jail and why some are still angry at the Australian Federal Police. And something we don't see often is when period products go viral or when we hear about new procedures for... down there. Yep, we're talking about labia puffing and minty sanitary pads. What do Gordon Ramsey's brother, drug traffickers, rapists, gangsters, terrorists, thieves, and some of the unluckiest tourists in the world have in common? They've all spent time in Bali's infamous Kerobokan prison, otherwise known as Hotel K. Built around 40 years ago to house 300 inmates, Hotel K is now home to over 1400, over three-quarters of whom are in for drug charges, in a country with some of the most draconian drug laws on the planet. Welcome to Indonesia, where being caught with narcotics could end with you with your back against a wall, staring down the barrels of a firing squad. April 2005 - Nine young Australians were arrested attempting to smuggle 8.3kg of heroin out of Bali. Indonesian authorities were working on a tip from the Australian Federal Police who had informed their Indonesian counterparts in the hope that it would lead to the identification of the drug syndicate distribution network and other players higher up in the chain. It didn't. What it did do was ensure that these nine offenders would be trialled and sentenced in a country where the penalties for drug trafficking are more harshly imposed than those for murder. ***Welcome to episode 9 - the following are a list of links used in researching for this episode: https://www.rappler.com/world/regions/asia-pacific/indonesia/bahasa/englishedition/141384-executions-death-penalty-process https://www.smh.com.au/world/long-days-journey-into-a-nightmare-20050423-gdl6or.html https://www.smh.com.au/world/surprise-at-alleged-bali-nine-leader-20050506-gdl9mt.html https://www.rappler.com/world/regions/asia-pacific/indonesia/88468-fast-facts-mary-jane-fiesta-veloso https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/apr/28/mary-jane-veloso-indonesia-execution-reprieve https://www.smh.com.au/world/indonesia-steps-up-killing-of-death-row-prisoners-20130517-2jrzb.html https://mashable.com/2015/04/28/indonesia-bali-nine-australians/ https://www.news.com.au/entertainment/books-magazines/books/moment-bali-nine-families-found-out/news-story/5253d32f689ae330f1b3ecbc1574cb8d?utm_source=google&utm_medium=CPC&utm_campaign=dsa_books_mag&gclid=CjwKCAiAg9rxBRADEiwAxKDTuk0SphkLmbd8J1trb-7C8Il1hFyD3_0Ll7VXNgQrHoZj7DkiR3-hYRoCJW4QAvD_BwE https://www.news.com.au/national/crime/left-behind-to-rot-bali-five-to-die-in-jail/news-story/d66e41262452556d292cf8b708325630 https://www.news.com.au/world/asia/last-hours-on-death-island-bali-nines-final-moments-before-firing-squad/news-story/51f777e9ea09efa27024fa35cc6753d0 https://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/news/last-hours-on-death-island-bali-nines-final-moment/3406922/ https://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/news/how-lies-arrogance-and-cockiness-earned-bali-9-kin/3401989/ https://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-02-12/bali-nine-timeline-andrew-chan-myuran-sukumaran/6085190 https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2005/05/bali-m11.html?view=print https://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/news/bali-nine-widespread-scorn-after-firing-squad-exec/2622242/ https://thewest.com.au/news/bali/bali-9-the-woman-the-firing-squad-left-behind-ng-b88823062z

On 17 April 2005, nine young Australians were arrested in Bali on charges of drug trafficking. Known as the 'Bali 9', some members received the death penalty for their crimes, while others are serving lengthy jail sentences. It seemed like a case burnt into the Australian consciousness. However, more than 15 years later the same crimes are being carried out, with just as devastating effects. Journalists Cindy Wockner and Madonna King were present at the trials and sentencing of The Bali 9. They used their investigative skills to piece together the whole story, from arrest to jail to the harrowing final journey for their book, Bali 9: The Untold Story. Madonna King joins Jessie Stephens to take us through the case of the Bali 9, the lives of those involved, why they took on such a huge risk, and the now controversial role of the Australian Federal Police. The boys open up this episode, refreshed from a break, with Rev's tale of a unique catch up in Bali. We also go back to 2001 where Australia was united with Sef Gonzales in grief after his parents and sister, Clodine were brutally murdered in their suburban home. We take a look at who the Gonzales' were, their migration to Australia and the events leading up to the horrors that would occur on 10 July 2001. We start the impossible task of unpacking the complex character that is Sef Gonzales and see how his partiality for stretching the truth would get him in trouble over and over. And while the musical ability that he kindly shared through his a cappella band Definite Vibez was questionable, one thing is for certain, he definitely had a darker side. Find out where this would lead him on the first of a two part series - SEF GONZALES PT 1.
