Meet Dr. Clark Bassham! After completing dental school at Loma Linda University, he practiced in Central California in both a community health clinic and a private practice. Looking for a place to call home and start a family he fell in love with Alaska. He is happy to call Alaska home, with its dogs and now two children. Having grown up in Vancouver B.C., Alaska has been a seamless fit with its natural playground of mountains and ocean. His weekends and time off are filled with fishing, camping, hiking, biking, surfing, skiing, and flying. He is a member of multiple dental organizations that help him collaborate with other clinicians to provide the most up to date care. These organizations include The American Dental Society, Alaska Dental Society, The Anchorage Dental Society, Academy of General Dentistry, and The Crown Council. Doing good both locally and abroad has always been a key ingredient in his career and he does this by participating in Anchorage Project Access, Alaska Mission of Mercy, providing pro bono dental treatment for local charities, and global dental humanitarian trips.

Olympic gold medal-winning shooter Lanny Bassham realized that his dream of a gold medal in the Olympics was dashed  in 1972 because he wasn't mentally disciplined.  But he bounced back four years later after essentially creating his own mental control curriculum. Episode 46 is a very interesting chat with Lanny Bassham, the creator of the Mental Management system. His book 'With Winning In Mind' is an excellent book that I read a few years ago and I have found it very helpful with very actionable ideas. A little bit about Lanny from his website: In 1972, at the Munich Germany Olympic Games, Lanny Bassham failed in his attempt to win the Gold Medal in International Rifle Shooting. He had a mental failure resulting in his taking the Silver instead. Frustrated, Lanny wanted to take a course in controlling the mind under pressure. After looking for such a seminar and not finding satisfaction, Bassham began to interview Olympic Gold Medalists to discover what they were doing differently to win. What he discovered was truly remarkable. Bassham created a system of mental control he called Mental Management®. Within the next 6 years, Lanny Bassham dominated his sport, winning 22 world individual and team titles, setting 4 world records and winning the coveted Olympic Gold Medal in Montreal in 1976. For the past 34 years, Lanny has been teaching Mental Management® to Olympians, business owners, Fortune 500 Corporations and the elite of sport and business community. His book defines what you need to think about to achieve mental control and how to do it. To control performance, especially in high-level competition, you need a system to help you in this process. 95% of all winning comes from the same 5% of the competitors.  What makes them different than the rest of us?  Their mental game is better than the others.  Anyone can practice a sport or hobby and develop skill at that sport, but the ones with a better mental system will always win in the end.  How does a person get a better mental game?  My guest today started out as the guy least likely to get to the Olympics as a small kid in 6th grade.  Fast forward to the 1976 Olympics where my guest, Lanny Bassham took the gold medal in small bore rifle shooting.  But it wasn’t an easy road.  Lanny had previously gone to the ’72 Olympics and choked in the gold medal match where he walked away confused and with a silver medal.  In the next four years he would develop his trademarked mental management system that in the past 40 years has lead many students to world championships and other victories. How do we learn about this system?  Lanny goes over the highlights from the system and his book he wrote, “With Winning in Mind” today with me.  “With Winning in Mind” is mentioned several times in previous podcasts as one of the tools that took good shooters to make them great.  This system also has been taught to special operations and Secret Service.  You’ll learn today why you should value the process and not the outcome, highlight solutions and not problems and finally how to coach your kids to be winners. He returned to the 1976 Olympics and won the gold medal in rifle shooting. For the past 40 years, he has provided "Mental Management" training programs to clients including PGA Tour golfers, Miss America finalists, CEOs, US Navy SEALs, SWAT teams, and the FBI. In addition, Bassham briefly headed the U.S. Olympic shooting team and has operated the company Mental Management Systems with his wife Helen in Flower Mound Texas since 1977. Lizann Bassham has a B.A. in Psychology from San Francisco State University and an M.Div. from Pacific School of Religion.  She is an ordained minister of The United Church of Christ and an active witch in the Reclaiming Tradition. Lizann has taught courses for the Graduate Theological Union and Pacific School of Religion and written curriculum on religion and the arts, sexuality and spirituality, and youth ministry. She has worked with Progressive, Evangelical, and Catholic Christian groups, and has been a guest Cantor for a Reconstructionist Synagogue. She currently serves as Campus Pastor at Pacific School of Religion and as a trainer for the FaithTrust Institute on healthy clergy boundaries. She directed a small performing arts company in Sonoma County for twelve years.  Her plays, “Stories Seldom Told,” “Breastify!” and “Voices” have been performed in venues around Northern California.  She had the opportunity to workshop parts of both her novels, Barefoot and One of Another at the Iowa writer’s summer workshop.  She is a columnist for SageWoman Magazine and a blogger at Pagan Square.  Once, quite by accident she won a salsa dance contest in East L.A.
