You've heard people say things like, "Never give up," or "The only way to fail is to quit." But, as a therapist, I see the dangers of adopting these mantras. Blind persistence is an unhealthy mindset. It's often fed by ego and leads to a variety of mental health issues and practical problems. Sometimes, quitting is actually a sign of strength and the key to living your best life. Some of the things I talk about today are: The dangers of unwavering persistence The benefits of grit and why it needs to be balanced with self-awareness 5 signs quitting might actually be the best decision How to develop a mindset that prioritizes mental and emotional well-being How to make a strategic choice to quit How to find the courage to walk away from the things that no longer suit you Mentally Strong App Get mental strength coaching for free — Episode 252 Exercise Go hands-free (subscribers only) — Episode 252 Voice Exercise Subscribe to the app to unlock all the features — MentallyStrong.Downpat.Ai Connect with the Show Buy a copy of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do Connect with Amy on Instagram — @AmyMorinAuthor Visit my website — AmyMorinLCSW.com Sponsors OneSkin — Get 15% off OneSkin with the code STRONGER at https://www.oneskin.co/  Quince — Go to Quince.com/stronger for free shipping on your order and 365 day returns! In this powerful conversation, Cole Grace joins Healthy Mind, Healthy Life to explore the misunderstood strength of humility and how it became the foundation for his healing journey after war, addiction, and PTSD. Cole shares his transformation from a soldier driven by ego to an author and advocate grounded in truth. He opens up about the impact of chronic illness, the importance of subconscious reprogramming, and how gratitude, mission, and affirmations help him stay aligned—even on the hardest days. This episode isn't just about struggle; it's a deep reflection on reclaiming inner worth when the external world crumbles. About Cole Grace:Cole Grace is a combat veteran turned mental health advocate and author. After navigating war zones and personal battles with PTSD and addiction, Cole now helps others access healing through self-awareness, subconscious rewiring, and humility. His book, Internal External, guides readers through calming their internal chaos and living from truth rather than performance. Key Takeaways: Humility isn't weakness—it's grounded self-awareness and true strength. Healing starts by addressing subconscious beliefs, not surface behaviors. Having a mission statement and practicing gratitude can rewire your brain and guide you through emotional storms. Vulnerability and honesty are prerequisites for lasting change. In this powerful episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, guest host Sana speaks with Lyubim Kogan—five-time Olympian, 9/11 survivor, founder of Wings4Heroes, and a man who has quite literally walked back into fire. From Wall Street to war zones, Lubim opens up about the mental cost of mission-driven work, surviving burnout, and why he still chooses to keep going when most would turn away. He shares how protecting his "silent hour" helps him align with his inner compass, and why real resilience is about resting without guilt. This conversation is a masterclass in legacy, sacrifice, and staying mentally grounded under pressure. About the Guest:Lyubim Kogan is a first-generation immigrant, Olympic athlete, former Wall Street executive, and the founder of Wings4Heroes, a nonprofit that empowers amputee veterans through paragliding. After surviving 9/11, Lyubim chose to return to conflict zones in Ukraine to serve those who sacrificed for freedom. His life embodies mental discipline, compassion, and purpose-driven service across continents. Key Takeaways: Burnout is real—even for high performers—and recovery requires intention, not guilt. True resilience means knowing when to stop, rest, and reconnect with yourself. Constant action can be a form of avoidance. Silence reveals true direction. Real impact starts when you follow your inner compass, not just societal definitions of success. Legacy is not about accumulation, but contribution. In this deeply honest episode of Healthy Waves, host Avik Chakraborty brings together three men—Chris Marhefka, Andrew Wilson, and Steve Wilson—whose lives have been transformed by trauma, resilience, and the pursuit of emotional truth. Together, they explore what real mental strength looks like when it's not about pushing through pain but learning to pause, feel, and heal. From trauma-informed coaching to peer-led support groups, they shed light on the challenges of vulnerability, the power of truth-telling, and the complexities of forgiveness. About the Guests:Chris Marhefka is a transformational coach and co-founder of 13 Pines. Once a high-performing entrepreneur, a near-death health crisis redirected his life toward deep healing, embodiment, and guiding others.Andrew Wilson is a trauma-informed fear coach, author, and podcast host who helps others reclaim power from fear and pain by tapping into subconscious healing and radical self-care.Steve Wilson is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and misdiagnosed bipolar disorder. Today, he facilitates mental health support groups in Phoenix, offering grounded peer-based healing for those battling deep trauma. Key Takeaways: Mental strength isn't just about endurance—it's about knowing when to rest, listen, and feel. Trauma shows up as behavior until we recognize the pain behind it. Vulnerability in men's groups can unlock healing for entire rooms. Forgiveness is personal—not everyone is ready for it, and that's okay. Peer support is often the missing link for those lost in systemic gaps. Healing starts when we stop performing and start reconnecting with what feels true. In this episode of Healthy Waves, host Avik Chakraborty sits down with three powerful voices—Julie Alsaker, Trey Tijerina, and Thomas R. Wilson—to unpack the deeper dimensions of resilience. We often hear that grit and mindset define strength, but what if resilience is also written in our genes, our beliefs, and our stories? This conversation bridges science, spirituality, and storytelling, showing how biology influences stress, how inner scripts shape transformation, and how community and belonging reinforce mental strength. About the Guests   Julie Alsaker is the founder of Lux Bioanalytics and a holistic genetic specialist with over 25 years in alternative health. She pioneers ways to integrate genetics, blood markers, and holistic care for true healing. Trey Tijerina is a visionary entrepreneur exploring psychology, spirituality, imagination, and the human impact of AI. He blends ventures and frameworks that challenge limits and open paths to transformation. Thomas R. Wilson is a writer, advocate, and community leader. Through storytelling and sensory-friendly events, he empowers neurodiverse and marginalized communities, proving resilience is born from courage and belonging. Key Takeaways   Genetics play a role in how stress is processed, and understanding your DNA can guide resilience strategies. Mental scripts and inner narratives influence how physiology responds and how transformation unfolds. Resilience is not fixed—it is a choice shaped daily by the state of consciousness we live from. Storytelling offers connection, representation, and advocacy, especially for neurodiverse and marginalized voices. Community resilience depends on inclusion, accessibility, and the power of healthy boundaries. Resilience is both prevention and adaptation—some learn through experience, others through wisdom, but all are shaped by how they relate to challenges. Self-love and compassionate boundaries strengthen personal and community resilience. This week, Mel returns to the podcast to share her experience of competing at the Ultraman World Championships on the Big Island of Hawaii in 2018.Ultraman is a 3 day triathlon, consisting of a 10km swim, 420km riding and an 84km run.#spoileralert Mel missed the cut-off on Day 2 by 8 minutes (after 12 hours of racing). Some in the same situation might describe this DNF as a ‘failure'. However, Mel views it as a battle she lost, rather than a ‘failure'.In this fun conversation, we discuss:- what her experience at the Epic 5 means to her now (almost 2 years down the track) and how it's changed how she sees herself,- her advice to women who struggle with their athletic identity and naming and claiming who and what they are,- how she found her way through an intense period of experiencing the Imposter Complex in the lead-up to the World Championships,- how the race at the Ultraman World Championships unfolded including the point at which she realised she may not make the cut-off on day 2,- why she describes the race as a battle she lost (as opposed to a ‘failure')- the incredible event she's decided to tackle next, and- her experience of being on the Rich Roll podcast and whether her pesky Imposter showed up too.

Freedom doesn't arrive when you finally “figure it all out”—it arrives the moment you move. We've built mental walls around the idea that creativity is genetic and strength is inherited. But imagine a world where every step, stretch, or stumble is a tiny act of liberation, welding new circuits of possibility in your brain. Picture the mountaineer navigating a cliff, or a child learning to throw—a dance as ancient as humanity itself, and just as transformative. The lesson isn't in chasing overnight genius, but in discovering that each deliberate movement is a brushstroke of reinvention. Reimagine exercise as a tool for mental experimentation, not just fitness. View setbacks in coordination as invitations to design new approaches, rather than signs to stop. Use the act of practicing anything—sport, art, language—as a metaphor for shaping your narrative. What will you change, today, when you realize that movement is the first story you tell yourself about what's possible? Taking Big Risks & Building Mental Strength with Sarah Stahl

Healthy Mind, Healthy Life

In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Sana speaks with Sarah Stahl—marketing veteran, tourism leader, and entrepreneur—about the mental resilience required to take big risks and create meaningful change. Sarah shares her journey from a secure role as a DMO director to scaling a rural treehouse glamping resort from $200K to nearly $1M, and eventually launching her own business helping vacation rental owners build independent brands. This candid conversation dives deep into reframing fear, recognizing when security is a mirage, and learning to trust your gut. Sarah also shares practical mindset tools, including the life-changing principles from The Four Agreements, and how to navigate the uncertainty that comes with leaving comfort zones behind. Whether you're contemplating a career leap or facing a personal turning point, this episode will equip you with actionable insights to move forward with courage and clarity. *Note from the host - "In the beginning, I mistakenly mentioned that we need to be forearmed before forewarned. It should be forewarned is forearmed" About the Guest   Sarah Stahl is an entrepreneur, brand strategist, and former tourism director who has helped businesses—from local glamping resorts to vacation rental owners—grow with independence and sustainability. After 15 years in marketing and 7 years in tourism, she now focuses on empowering owners to thrive without third-party dependence. Her approach blends marketing expertise, life experience, and intuitive decision-making. Key Takeaways   True risk-taking is less about having a perfect plan and more about cultivating trust in yourself. Leaving a secure role can feel terrifying, but it can also unlock your greatest potential. Imposter syndrome is often the voice asking, “What if I fail?”—challenge it by taking action anyway. The Four Agreements—be impeccable with your word, don't take things personally, don't make assumptions, and always do your best—are powerful mindset tools for resilience. Security in business or employment is often a mirage; real security comes from self-trust and adaptability. Surround yourself with a diverse community to expand perspective and practice empathy. Your energy—whether confident or fearful—shows up in your communication and relationships. Progress often comes from small, consistent steps rather than giant leaps. E1003 The Badge and the Bottle: Is Alcohol Still an Unspoken Coping Tool?

Tactical Living

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 3, 2025 11:09

This episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosted by Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton, takes a hard look at the role alcohol still plays (Amazon Affiliate) in first responder culture. For generations, the badge and the bottle have been intertwined—used to unwind, to bond, and, for some, to bury the weight of the job. We explore why alcohol remains an unspoken coping mechanism, how it impacts personal and professional lives, and what it takes to break free from cycles of silent self-medication. The Cultural Legacy of Alcohol in Service: Why drinking has long been normalized in first responder circles. The “work hard, play hard” mentality and how it perpetuates risky habits. The Fine Line Between Social and Self-Medication: How occasional drinks can shift into dependency without realizing it. The difference between relaxation and numbing out. Signs Alcohol Is Becoming a Problem: Red flags that often go unnoticed—or are brushed off—in responder culture. How high-functioning dependency hides in plain sight. The Impact on Relationships and Performance: Why substance reliance affects emotional regulation, decision-making, and intimacy. How alcohol-related issues can put careers and families at risk. The Role of Peer Influence and Stigma: How fear of judgment or isolation keeps people from seeking help. The unspoken pressure to join in to “fit in.” Strategies to Break the Cycle: Audit Your Habits: Track how often and why you're drinking to gain clarity on patterns. Replace Rituals, Not Just the Drink: Find healthier ways to decompress and bond that still meet the same needs. Seek Support Early: Connect with confidential peer support programs or counseling before it becomes a crisis. Shift the Culture Through Leadership: Leaders setting examples by promoting sober or low-alcohol events. Prioritize Emotional Tools Over Liquid Ones: Build coping skills that can handle stress without relying on alcohol. In this episode, we challenge the silence around alcohol in first responder life—and offer practical steps to protect your health, relationships, and career.

This episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosted by Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton, sheds light on the hidden sacrifices that first responder families (Amazon Affiliate) make every single day. While spouses and children never signed up for the job, they still feel the ripple effects of shift work, emotional strain, and the unpredictability that comes with life in service. We unpack the emotional labor your loved ones carry—often silently—and how to acknowledge, support, and protect them without losing yourself to the demands of the badge. Understanding Secondary Service: How spouses and kids are impacted by missed holidays, unpredictable schedules, and constant worry. The way this secondary service can shape identity and family dynamics. The Emotional Toll on Loved Ones: Recognizing signs of stress, anxiety, or resentment in your spouse and children. Why unspoken worries can be just as heavy as the dangers of the job itself. Invisible Shifts at Home: How partners often shoulder the household and parenting duties alone during your shifts. The mental exhaustion of “covering” for an absent parent or spouse. The Role of Unpredictability: How canceled plans, late calls, and changing shifts affect trust and emotional connection. Why communication about unpredictability matters more than you think. The Silent Strength of Support Systems: How family members adapt to crisis without formal training. The toll of always being “on call” emotionally, even when you're not home. Strategies to Help Protect Your Family's Peace: Intentional Communication: Create a safe space for your spouse and kids to express frustrations without fear of judgment. Scheduled Family Time: Make non-negotiable dates on the calendar that aren't easily sacrificed to work. Acknowledgement and Gratitude: Verbally recognize the sacrifices your loved ones make—and do it often. Healthy Decompression Habits: Process your job stress before walking through the front door to avoid emotional spillover. Shared Resources and Support: Connect your family with counseling, peer support groups, or other first responder families for understanding and solidarity. Your family may not wear the uniform, but they carry its weight alongside you. In this episode, you'll learn how to ensure their service doesn't come at the expense of their well-being—or yours.
