As a “computer” at Harvard College Observatory, she spent countless hours examining photographic plates of stars, and in doing so discovered a relationship between the brightness and period of Cepheid variable stars. This “Leavitt Law” became the cosmic yardstick that allowed astronomers like Hubble to measure the true scale of the Milky Way and the expansion of the universe. Though she worked in relative obscurity during her lifetime, her insight remains one of the cornerstones of modern cosmology.
