Length: 25 minutesSynopsis: This afternoon (6/5/23), in our Rambam Bekius mini-shiur, we INTENDED to learn the Rambam's interpretation of the midrashic statement, "The only thing Ha'Kadosh Baruch Hu has in this world is the four cubits of halacha alone" (Berachos 8a). But we decided to start earlier to get some context and spent the whole time on the Rambam's explanation of why midrashim are written cryptically. Interesting discussion, though! We'll see where get to tomorrow! (בג"ה)-----מקורות:רמב"ם - הקדמה לפירוש המשניות, מהדורת קאפחרמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים ב:ו-----This week's Torah content has been sponsored by Rachayl. Thank you! This morning (3/10/23), in lieu of our Friday Q&A, we continued working on the Gemara we started on Wednesday. We reviewed what we covered last time, read and elucidated a summary of an idea from the Nefesh ha'Chayim, and then attempted to figure out the machlokess of the pesukim (if there IS a machlokess). While we didn't arrive at any conclusions, we did take some significant steps, and gained some insight along the way. We also read a full chapter of Sefer Daniel!-----מקורות:ברכות דף נה עמוד איפה תואר (הובא בעץ יוסף ד"ה אלא, הובא במתיבתא) שםנפש החיים שער ד פ"ה בהגהה (הובא במתיבתא)איוב כח:כחרבינו יונה - משלי ד:זדניאל ב:כ-כג; ד:א-לדשמות לא:א-וAyn Rand, "The Romantic Manifesto" -----The Torah content for the rest of Adar has been sponsored by my friend and chavrusa Zack, with the following dedicatory message: When asked, "Who is a leader you greatly admire?" my grandfather z”l immediately comes to mind. This morning (3/8/23), in lieu of a morning Mishlei shiur, we set out to answer a question posed by one of my talmidim to our Rosh ha'Yeshiva at the Purim seudah last night: How does one become a chacham? We identified three sources which talk about Step #1, and we decided to work on the most problematic one: "Ha'Kadosh Baruch Hu only gives chochmah to those who [already] have chochmah" (Berachos 55a). The question is: How are you supposed to get started? We developed several approaches from several sources, and we intend to continue working on this on Friday. -----מקורות:שמות לא:א-ורלב"ג - שמות לא:וברכות דף נה עמוד אדניאל ב:כ-כביפה תואר (הובא בעץ יוסף ד"ה אלא, הובא במתיבתא) שםיעב"ץ - אבות ג:יא (הובא במתיבתא)פרקי אברהם - אבות ד:א (הובא במתיבתא)מאירי - ברכות דף מ עמוד ארבינו יונה - אבות ד:א -----The Torah content for the rest of Adar has been sponsored by my friend and chavrusa Zack, with the following dedicatory message: When asked, "Who is a leader you greatly admire?" my grandfather z”l immediately comes to mind. This evening (1/11/23), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, we continued and completed (for now!) our analysis of the midrash about Hashem davening to himself. The good news is that I believe we got the main idea of the midrash. The "bad" news is that we raised a powerful question on the Sefer ha'Chinuch and Rashba, which I THOUGHT I had an answer to, but I realized that I didn't have the answer as clear as I thought, so we didn't end up answering it. If you think of an answer, let me know!-----מקורות:מסכת סופרים טז:בברכות דף ז עמוד ארש"יריטב"אברכות דף לג עמוד ברלב"ג ביאור הפרשה - שמות לג:יטרשב"א - פירוש ההגדות ברכות דף ז עמוד אברכות דף נ עמוד אספר החינוך הערת המחברבראשית רבה ה:ארלב"ג: הקדמה לתורהרש"י - דברים ל:יטשו"ת הרשב"א חלק ה סימן נ-נא -----The Torah content for the remainder of January has been sponsored by Yehuda in gratitude for fifteen years of friendship and learning.-----If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! This evening (1/4/23), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, we took up an exceedingly perplexing and seemingly problematic midrash about Hashem davening and asking for berachos from human beings. The plan was to learn this midrash in accordance with the commentary of the Rashba, but we didn't want to rush things. Tonight we went over the facts, developed our own approach, and read the Rashba's preface to his commentary on the midrash. Next week (בג"ה) we'll learn his explanation of the midrash and answer as many of our questions as we can.-----מקורות:מסכת סופרים טז:בברכות דף ז עמוד ארש"יריטב"אברכות דף לג עמוד ברלב"ג ביאור הפרשה - שמות לג:יטרשב"א - פירוש ההגדות ברכות דף ז עמוד אברכות דף נ עמוד אספר החינוך הערת המחברבראשית רבה ה:ארלב"ג: הקדמה לתורה -----This week's Torah content has been sponsored by Rachayl as a "thank you" to me for teaching, and as a "thank you" to all those who participate in my shiurim and share their thoughts and questions.-----If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! This evening (12/28/22), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, I shared a summary of the fruits of the learning I've done over the past couple of weeks with our newly minted chosson, Yehoshua, in preparation for his marriage to Brooke. We've been learning through some ideas in the sheva berachos and I figured it would be good to record those ideas in some form while they're fresh in my mind. For the sake of time and efficiency, I decided not to present the ideas from the firsthand sources, but instead to present our conclusions, along with the digest-style commentary of the Eitz Yosef in the Siddur Otzar ha'Tefilos. I'm calling it a "crash course" in that it doesn't aim for comprehensiveness - just for a bottom-line basic understanding. And at the end of the shiur, I do a quick overview of the various "issues" involved with the berachah of "ashar yatzar es ha'adam b'tzalmo" and explain our minhag.-----מקורות:נוסח ברכת אירוסין וברכות חתניםעץ יוסף - אוצר התפילותירמיהו ז:לד; טז:ט; כה:י; לג:יארמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר נשים, הלכות אישות י:גבראשית א:כו-כזרש"י שםר' אברהם בן הרמב"ם שםספורנו שםבראשית ה:אשמות כה:טדברים ד:טו-יח -----This week's Torah content has been sponsored by Sarah in celebration of the marriage of Rivkie and Dovi Siderson. This evening (12/8/22), in our Thursday Night Pirkei Avos shiur, we learned a very challenging mishnah which partially overlaps with a previous mishnah in Avos and ALSO partially overlaps with a Gemara in Berachos. To make things even more difficult, most of our "go to" meforshim barely commented on anything - except for the Sforno! With Sforno as our guide, we gave it our best shot. While we may not have answered ALL our questions, we definitely managed to come up with a good take-away idea.-----מקורות:אבות ג:זהגדה של פסחרבינו יונהברכות דף ו עמוד אספורנו - אבות ג:ג.זמאירי - אבות ג:גרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תלמוד תורה ג:יברמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר קרבנות, הלכות חגיגה ג:ו -----The Torah content for the month of Kislev has been sponsored by Serena and Paul Koppel, who want to be makir tov and express gratitude.-----If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! Synopsis: This morning (12/9/22), in our Friday Q&A, we addressed three topics: (1) When learning Chumash - or, to be honest, any other area - how do you know what to treat as a "fact" and what to treat as a "theory"? (2) How do curses from other human beings work? (3) How do berachos from other human beings work? Although we didn't arrive at definitive answers for all three questions, we definitely gained some insights!-----מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר שופטים, הלכות מלכים ומלחמות ט:ידרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר קנין, הלכות מכירה ז:א-ברמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר שופטים, הלכות סנהדרין והעונשין המסורין להם כו:זרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות תפילה וברכת כהנים טו:ז -----The Torah content for the month of Kislev has been sponsored by Serena and Paul Koppel, who want to be makir tov and express gratitude.-----If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! Synopsis: Both Judaism and Stoicism employ the technique of “the cosmic perspective,” albeit for different ends. This weekend I read an article about a cosmic explosion which led me to discover a new application of the cosmic perspective technique which might help us to cope with life's unexpected turns.
