The Law's Expiration Date: Paul's Fifth Defense of Justification by Faith (Part 1) | Galatians 3:19-22 ---------------------------- Sermon Outline-------------------------------- Introduction: Establishing the Context . . . The Law Imprisons Everything Under Sin (3:22) 1. We again see the contrast between the Law and the Promise G. The Law was a Temporary Guardian (3:23-25) Conclusion: And Can It Be?

John 5:21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. I want to open my comments on this verse with this: to live to love with the Son is to live to love with the Father. I derive this conclusion from Jesus' statements like this one. He continued to drive home the point to the Jews that Jesus' works were the Father's works and will. In this verse, Jesus exalted His Father as the life-giver. He raises the dead and gives them life. Was Jesus referring to physical resurrection such as Lazarus, Jairus' daughter, or the widow's son or to spiritual new birth? Both would be true. Both would also be true of Jesus' power to give life. Let's be encouraged by two things from this verse. One, the Father and the Son have the power to give life because they are the source of all life. Death was conquered at the cross. Just as the Father did it, Jesus did it. The writer of Hebrews wrote in 2:14, “Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.” Death has been defeated and swallowed up by life. Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory. O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Praise the name of the Lord! So first, we who have believed in Jesus are encouraged that we not only know this great truth as an intellectual fact, but we know it by experience. The One who raises the dead and gives life is our Father, and He has given us life in His Son. Two, we may be encouraged that Jesus, like the Father, gives life to whomever He wishes. That means there is no person who cannot be saved. There is nothing anyone has done or can do that can stop the life-giving power of God. This gives us great confidence as we love those God puts in our paths. We aren't relying on our ability to convince anyone to do anything. When the Father and Son give life, they will believe that Jesus has conquered death and is life and the life-giver. We love people and proclaim the gospel with confidence that God is able to give life to them when He wishes. Father in heaven, thank You for another day of life to know and love You and love with Jesus. We thank You for the Holy Spirit, who manifests the presence and power of Christ, so that we can love and trust You and love those You put in our paths for Your glory. We pray that You will give life as we love and share the gospel today. I invite you to become a partner in our ministry. Instead, we are called to hold firmly to the word of life—the good news of the gospel. These are words spoken by Jesus himself, words that declare us forgiven, loved, welcomed as daughters and sons. The Scriptures invite us not only to read but to receive, to allow these words to redefine us. We can let go of those old, bruising words, those that keep us trapped and afraid. We can reach out in faith and receive the words Christ offers: forgiven, loved, chosen, cherished. No matter your flaws or failures, Jesus comes to you as the Champion with words and life that heal and restore. He speaks over us—not words of condemnation, but of freedom and new identity. This is the message we are to hold onto, the truth that transforms and renews: in Christ, you are loved, you are his. Hear his good word. Let it settle into your heart. Let it shape the way you see yourself and others. Hold firmly to the words of life, and let everything else fall away. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Gracious and everlasting God, you have brought us through the shadow of night into the promise of a new day. You go before us with your mercy, sustain us by your grace and keep us from wandering paths of fear or pride. Let every word we speak and every step we take be formed by the goodness of Christ. O Lord, gather your people far and near. May every tribe and tongue come to know your peace. Let justice roll like a river and healing flow where there has been division. So, what do you think God thinks about words that kill? Proverbs says, “Words kill, words give life; they're either poison or fruit—you choose.” (Proverbs 18.21) Does that mean God sees them as equal choices? What do you think God thinks about destructive criticism, gossip, sarcasm, gaslighting, broken confidences, bullying, or other … discouraging words? There is one true promise keeper - God. None of us were even nominated or received honorable mention. No "A" for effort. It is an unchanging and eternal promise for those who believe, which began in the days of Abraham and carried through to the Seed - Jesus Christ. Once the Seed had come, the Jewish people were no longer considered as being under the "guardian" ... known as the law of commandments. Many from the twelve tribes would struggle with Paul's message along these lines. But because of this truth—both Jew and Gentile were able to begin to identify as children of a royal family by faith. The law was a dead-end street and was not connected to the faith freeway. But those who belong to Christ are considered as Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
