He also shares his perspective on the ongoing conflict in Gaza and how he approaches conversations about it, given the region's significance to the three major Abrahamic religions.A'ndre and the Bishop conclude the episode with a discussion on Christian Nationalism, where Bishop Curry offers strong critiques of the concept.

How do you step into conversations, whether personal or professional, family, friends, colleagues, or even perceived or real adversaries, and still find a place for love in the conversation? Is that even possible in some situations? Is it asking way too much, or is it the only way to finally feel the way you want to feel and resolve an issue that, approached any other way, will remain forever intractable? That's what we're talking about with today's guest, the Most Reverend Michael Curry, who is the first African American individual to serve as Presiding Bishop and Primate of The Episcopal Church. In May of 2018, Bishop Curry delivered a moving sermon on the redemptive power of love at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal wedding, then just months after served as the officiant for the state funerals of Senator John McCain and President George H.W. Bush in the Washington National Cathedral. In this episode, recorded in July 2020, Bishop Curry talks with the Most Rev. Thabo Makgoba, Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, South Africa. Archbishop Thabo's life is punctuated with stories of hope and oppression, joy and anger, truth and reconciliation. To Pray on the Way of Love is to dwell intentionally with God each day, whether in though, word, or deed, individually or corporately. Far from a trite bit of advice or a platitude awkwardly expressed or a passive response to injustice, prayer is an intensely powerful practice that centers us on our relationship with God and undergirds the love we show to neighbors. Bishop Curry and Archbishop Makgoba discuss how prayer has been integral to the work of peace with justice in South Africa – through ministries and advocacy from the environment to racial reconciliation. As members of the worldwide Anglican Communion, The Episcopal Church and the Anglican Church of Southern Africa work with partners around the world to share the love of God and neighbor in our varied contexts. The Most Reverend Michael Curry is presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, and in this episode, we talk about love. Messy, hard, complicated love. I ask him how we can transcend fear in a scarcity-based culture and what we can learn from those who came before us. We also talk about the church, how to develop beloved community, and the scrappy, gritty work of love that is my definition of faith. Plus, Bishop Curry shares his playlist, with one song that I really didn't expect. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
In this electrifying conversation, Rabbi Rami talks with the Most Rev. Michael Curry. He is the presiding bishop and primate of the Episcopal Church. They discuss his new book, Love is the Way, and how Jesus has over the millennia been turned into a meeker and milder version than the radical figure he may have actually been at the time. He was founding a nonviolent movement, true, but he was challenging the status quo. “I think it would have been lovingly unsettling to be around Jesus,” says Curry. “The way of love calls out injustice. I grew up hearing the language of love within the context of the civil rights movement,” explains Curry. “This is how we were intended to live, and this is why it has such positive energy.” Do not miss listening to this amazing conversation between Rabbi Rami and Bishop Curry. In this episode, Bishop Curry talks with legendary leader Ruby Sales about her long and enduring work for civil rights and freedom in the United States. The two discuss how she was introduced to these movements, her search for a calling, and the potential of The Episcopal Church to lead in honest racial justice and reconciliation. To Go on the Way of Love is to cross boundaries, listen deeply, and live like Jesus. To do any of these things, and to have any hope of healing, we need to be able to tell each other the truth and go, as Ruby Sales says, “where it hurts.” Bishop Curry and Sales discuss how going where it hurts led to an encounter with Jonathan Myrick Daniels, an Episcopal seminarian whose ministry in Lowndes County, Alabama would lead to his martyrdom and her decades-long legacy of justice-making. They describe seeing past a dualistic understanding of history and toward a spiritual revolution that can actually affect change in society. In this episode, Bishop Curry talks with Richard Rohr, OFM, about what it takes to turn and follow a Christ as big as the universe, choosing the Way of Love instead of the ways of our egos. The two discuss the spiritualities of addition and subtraction and the consequences for our country and ourselves when we spend more time placing Jesus on a pedestal than we do actively following him. The good news in all of this is that, like Fr. Rohr and Bishop Curry, we are all called by Jesus to follow the Way of Love. With God's help, we can turn from the powers of sin, hatred, fear, injustice, and oppression toward the way of truth, love, hope, justice, and freedom. It is this reorienting of our whole selves - body, mind, and soul - on the love and life of Jesus that leads us away from cynicism and into freedom. In this episode, Bishop Curry talks to Shane Claiborne, founder of the Simple Way and co-founder of Red Letter Christians, about the importance of spending time in the words of Jesus and allowing them to directly inform our thinking and actions. The two discuss what it means to pay particular attention to the “red letters” of the Bible – those in which Jesus is directly teaching and guiding us, even now. To learn on the Way of Love is to reflect on Scripture each day, especially on Jesus' life and teachings. In a world that is only too eager to use scripture to justify cruelty, judgmentalism, and party politics, we as Christians are called to keep re-centering our lives and minds on our Lord's words– to help bring about God's dream for ourselves, our societies, and the whole world. Having spent time among groups of people who radically disagree – about the Church, about human sexuality, about love itself – he describes some of the lessons he's learned along the way. Resting on the Way of Love is receiving the gift of God's grace, peace, and restoration. Prayer is inviting and dwelling in God's loving presence - a practice that can sometimes be daunting, but is ultimately one of the most important things we do as Christians. Whether by boldly offering our thanksgivings and concerns to God, simply listening for God's voice in our lives, or infusing our work with prayer, we can find ourselves drawing nearer and nearer to him. In this episode, Bishop Michael Curry and hosts Kyle and Sandy discuss prayer on the Way of Love. Andrea McKellar and Bishop Curry share some prayerful practices that take place beyond the church walls, including hiking, neighborhood walks, and phone apps that can remind us to take time to come before God every day. We also hear from Roger Hutchison, Director of Christian Formation and Parish Life at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church in Houston. An artist, writer, and lay leader, Roger describes how prayer informs and shapes his work - especially around grief, painting, and his newest offering, The Very Best Day: The Way of Love for Children (Church Publishing, January 2020). When we go on the Way of Love, we cross boundaries, listen deeply, and live like Jesus. Whether God calls us to go across the street or across the world, we are sent beyond our circles and comfort to witness to the love, justice, and truth of God with our lips and with our lives. In this episode, Bishop Michael Curry and hosts Kyle and Sandy discuss “going” on the Way of Love. We learn about both sides of the practice: having the faith to step out into the world and being able to receive the gift of hospitality graciously. Bishop Curry tells a story of trust - about coming to understand that God is already present, wherever we are sent. We also hear from the Rev. Katie Nakamura Rengers, founder of The Abbey, a church and coffee shop ministry in the Avondale neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama. When we worship, we gather with others before God. We hear the Good News of Jesus Christ, give thanks, confess, and offer the brokenness of the world to God. So many of our worship experiences take place within a church building - it can be hard to imagine worship without candles and stained glass and pews - but there are many ways we can bring worship out into the wider world, knowing that God is out there, too. In this episode, Bishop Michael Curry and hosts Kyle and Sandy discuss worshiping on the Way of Love: Gathering in community weekly to thank, praise, and dwell with God. Bishop Curry reflects on how we can show God's love boldly in our communities while also being respectful of neighbors who believe differently. We also hear from Hugo Olaiz, associate editor of Latino-Hispanic resources for Forward Movement. Hugo tells us about a worship experience that by definition occurs beyond the church walls: Las Posadas. He explains his own practices of Las Posadas and reflects on the witness this tradition makes possible: witness to the importance of hospitality, of community, and of the story of the Holy Family. Just like the disciples who heard the call to turn from their fishing nets toward Jesus, we are each beckoned to reorient our lives to God, falling in love again, again, and again. But what exactly are we turning from? And what are we to turn toward? In this episode, Bishop Michael Curry and hosts Kyle and Sandy discuss turning on the Way of Love: pausing, listening, and choosing to follow Jesus. Bishop Curry reflects on people who are helping us to find a new way in society, assisting us as we turn from fear, anxiousness, desperation, and sin, back toward confidence, boldness, hope, and redemption. We also hear from Ruth Anderson and Greg Farrand of the Second Breath Center in Greensboro, N.C., where people who are “overloaded, overscheduled, overwhelmed and overstimulated” can step away and reorient their lives. Ruth and Greg offer tips and ideas to get started along that path as we bring ourselves back to the most important things in life. In this last episode of Season 1, we reflect on what it means to “Go”. As Jesus went to the highways and byways, he sends us beyond our circles and comfort, to witness to the love, justice, and truth of God with our lips and with our lives. We go to listen with humility and to join God in healing a hurting world. We go to become Beloved Community, a people reconciled in love with God and one another. In this episode, Bishop Curry teaches about living where the rubber meets the road, explaining how we can take all we've learned about the Way of Love and put it into action. Everywhere we go, we can follow and seek the living presence of Jesus. Hosts Kyle and Sandy discuss what Go has meant in their contexts - from walking to church services to serving jury duty. They also share exciting news about where Sandy is going next. Season 2 of The Way of Love with Bishop Michael Curry is coming in September. On the Way of Love, we don't only practice turning away from destructive things, but also turning ourselves toward God – like a flower setting its face toward the sun. In our daily lives, we are called to reorient ourselves to Jesus and his loving, liberating, life-giving Way. In this episode, Bishop Curry and Canon Stephanie Spellers talk about the sometimes hard – but still very important – concepts of sin and redemption. They explain that when we find ourselves victims of our own self-centeredness, when we fail to live and love like we should, we can always turn back toward truth, love, hope, justice, and freedom. Hosts Kyle and Sandy discuss their experiences of hearing God calling them to make turns in their own lives and how they've changed as a result. When we practice blessing on the Way of Love, we walk with others, listening to and sharing stories, journeying into a deeper relationship with the living God we have known in Jesus Christ. In this episode, Bishop Curry and Canon Stephanie Spellers talk about how we are called to care for each other; how we can seek, name, and celebrate Jesus' loving presence in the stories of all people (including ourselves); and how we can live in gratitude for all the blessings of this life. Hosts Kyle and Sandy discuss what they have learned about what it means to be a blessing in the Way of Love – to be a people empowered by the Spirit to bless everyone we meet, practicing generosity and compassion, and proclaiming the Good News of God in Christ with hopeful words and selfless actions. It can sometimes be hard to worship regularly. With competing priorities, everyday stresses, and our otherwise busy lives, we might ask, “Why should I have to go somewhere else in order to worship a God who's all around me?” In this episode, Bishop Curry teaches about how regular worship can both help us to deny self-interest as the main aim of life and also re-center our lives on God. Hosts Kyle and Sandy discuss how what we do in worship – whether that involves incense and bells or whispered prayers and guitars – forms and changes us. As we gather with our neighbors, we are called out of ourselves, placed in community, pointed toward God, and reminded of the mystery at the heart of creation. We are made one body: the body of Christ sent forth into the world. In a world that often confuses rest with sleep or passive consumption or a means to do more later, God invites us to dedicate time for restoration and wholeness – within our bodies, minds, and souls, and within our communities and institutions. By resting, we place our trust in God, the primary actor who brings all things to their fullness. But that doesn't mean resting is always easy. If rest is so good and so important, why do so many of us find it so difficult to practice? Bishop Curry talks about how living near an Orthodox Jewish community in Baltimore helped him to finally understand the value of real sabbath-taking, along with the challenges and opportunities that come with it. Join us this week as we talk about stepping away from the noise and activity of daily life – even for a moment or two – and stepping closer to God and each other. The deep roots of the Christian tradition offer a spiritual path toward deeper relationship with God, neighbor, and self. For centuries, monastic communities have shaped their lives around rhythms and disciplines for following Jesus together. Such a pattern is known as a “rule of life.” When we commit to turn, learn, pray, worship, bless, go, and rest, we are engaging in and growing a rule of life. But what does that really mean? In this episode, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, along with hosts Kyle Oliver and Sandy Milien, teaches us how we can use the Way of Love to train up our spirits, just like athletes train their bodies. In an interview with the Rev. Lorenzo Lebrija, Bishop Curry discusses what that training might look like and how we can continually strive toward spiritual growth and depth—and importantly, how to get back up when we fall down. Next week on the podcast: Pray. For the remainder of Season 1, episodes will drop every Tuesday.
