Originally from Cynthiana, Kentucky, Wylie Caudill has emerged as a distinguished artist, rooted in the verdant landscape of Lexington. He is presently this year's official artist for the prestigious 150th Kentucky Derby.Wylie's artistic narrative is woven with a distinctive imprint—a signature style he affectionately terms as "organic repetition." This unique aesthetic can be easily recognized throughout his portfolio. His work can be seen not just in Kentucky but across the United States, vitalizing urban landscapes with murals that echo his artistic ethos.Wylie's artistic journey began when he was quite young. Pokemon, trains, and dragons served as his inspiration and ignited his imagination. However, it was while at college that Wylie found his artistic niche using chalk to draw on the streets and sidewalks of his campus, that earned him the nickname 'the chalk guy'. Murals were a natural transition from there.Today, Wylie's artistic creativity transcends the confines of concrete walls to work on canvases, bourbon bottles, apparel, and beyond. He likes to think his journey stands as a testament to the transformative power of passion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to his art.

Florida Panthers (Puma concolor couguar) are a distinct population of pumas that live predominantly in southwest Florida. Pumas used to roam the entire United States, but habitat loss and overhunting in the 1800's and early 1900's caused them to disappear from much of their range. Every breeding population of pumas East of the Mississippi river vanished, except for one. South Florida, due to its wild and swampy nature, was able to thwart human development just enough for its inhabiting pumas to narrowly avoid oblivion. These surviving pumas, or Florida Panthers, represent the resiliency of wild south Florida. The decades since their near extinction have been filled with controversy, conservation, and politics. This iconic cat still has many challenges to face, and with only 200 or so remaining in the wild, their future is uncertain. Daniel was first introduced unofficially to this animal during his first trip to Everglades National Park in 2017. The Florida Panther and the swampy, remote areas in which they are found captivated Daniel's imagination. Every subsequent trip to the Everglades and southwest Florida had at least some time dedicated to searching for this cat, all to no avail. In January 2024, after spending months preparing and researching, Daniel embarked on a five-day solo trip in the backcountry of the Big Cypress National Preserve, with the sole objective of finally crossing paths with a panther. But what exactly IS a Florida Panther? Are they only found in Florida? Are they black? What is the difference between a Florida Panther and a mountain lion? And of course… do they eat people?! Luckily, Bill was able to meet Daniel in south Florida to record an episode about the Florida Panther and tackle the questions and misconceptions that leave this cat shrouded in mystery. This episode was recorded on January 8th, 2024 at Everglades National Park in Homestead, FL. Episode NotesWhen Daniel was talking about Florida Panther size, they were described as smaller than other pumas out west. It should also be noted that while they do fall to the bottom of the size and weight scale of pumas in North America, the populations of pumas closer to the equatorial rain forests in South America are even smaller. This reinforces the notion discussed in the podcast that pumas in colder climates or higher elevation tend to be larger than pumas in warmer climates and lower elevation. Also, Bill asked Daniel what their life span was, and Daniel was not sure. Bill guessed 20-30 years. According to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, “Panthers can live up to 20 years or more in the wild. Female kittens have a good chance of living 10 years or more. Males have a tougher time, but if they survive to five or six years old, they are likely to live even longer to 10 or more years.” Nicely done Bill! While discussing vehicular collisions as the number one cause of death of Florida Panther, Bill and Daniel discussed how in 2023, 13 Florida Panthers were killed by vehicular strikes. So far in 2024, there have been five. Bill and Daniel referred to the rule about animals being larger the farther you get from the equator, but they couldn't remember the name of the rule. It's Bergmann's Rule, and it's defined as: “one of the best-known generalizations in zoology. It is generally defined as a within-species tendency in homeothermic (warm-blooded) animals to have increasing body size with increasing latitude and decreasing ambient temperature. That is, Bergmann's rule states that among mammals and birds, individuals of a particular species in colder areas tend to have greater body mass than individuals in warmer areas. For instance, white-tailed deer are larger in Canada than in the Florida Keys, and the body size of wood rat populations are inversely correlated with ambient temperature. This principle is named after a nineteenth-century German biologist, Karl Bergmann, who published observations along these lines in 1847.” - from The New World EncyclopediaLinks Panther Pulse, the database containing documented Florida Panther deaths and depredations: https://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/wildlife/panther/pulse/Path of the Panther: https://pathofthepanther.com Sponsors and Ways to Support UsGumleaf Boots, USA (free shipping for patrons)Thank you to Always Wandering Art (Website and Etsy Shop) for providing the artwork for many of our episodes! Welcome Back No-Problem Parents! Gain insights into emotional resilience and discover practical tips for parents and children alike. Dr. Marissa Caudill introduces the concept of the "House of WOE," a metaphorical space representing our internal expectations and the source of negative emotions. She likens life's challenges to earthquakes in this mental house and emphasizes the importance of understanding and remodeling it for emotional well-being. The House of WOE evolves with age, and parents can use this idea to navigate their children's emotional responses. Dr. Caudill introduces the "Circle of Concern" and the "Circle of Influence," highlighting the power of focusing on controllable elements like actions and thoughts. The key to emotional mastery, she explains, is practice—being aware of "earthquakes," letting go, and learning from experiences. The episode addresses questions about Dr. Caudill's unique model, the baffling nature of children's reactivity, and the practicality of remodeling the House of WOE on the fly. So how can we use this idea of the House of WOE to our advantage? Well, picture a big circle - this is our circle of concern - these are all the things that potentially can cause earthquakes within our house of WOE. Now, within this, picture a smaller circle, our circle of influence - this consists of just what we can control. And what can we control in our life, really? The only things we can really control are actions and thoughts/attitudes. Everything that we worry about in our circle of concern can cause an earthquake in our house of WOE, which leads to pain. But we only continue to suffer if we continue to focus on our circle of concern. If instead, we notice the earthquake, know where it's coming from, and decide to remodel our house of WOE by focusing on our circle of influence and changing our actions and thoughts - by "letting go" of the perceived conflict and accepting what is - at that point, the suffering stops and we are empowered to move on and learn from the experience, and take steps towards a better future. Hannah and Seth Caudill are a powerful sibling duo. Just graduating from high school this spring, they both are heading to Catawba College with full scholarships to run cross country and track. I was intrigued to hear how these two started running and how they each learned (in completely different ways) to love it and find success. Our conversation was fast-paced and quite amusing because of their banter, and you can't help but smile when you hear them. You can certainly tell they are twins, and you can hear how much they admire, support, love and encourage each other despite how much they may try to hide it. ;) Hannah and Seth, I SO enjoyed our conversation, and I look forward to keeping up with your success in college and beyond. You are both such an inspiration and great role models for the sport. Thank you! If you are enjoying this podcast, please share with your friends and family and follow! Have you ever wondered what it's like to write in a novella collection when the authors intentionally connect the stories closely? That's exactly what Crystal Caudill, Angela Strong, and I did for our collection We Three Kings which releases in September 2023. In this episode of Book Talk, we talk about how we got the ideas for our novellas, how they are connected, and what we incorporated into the stories. It was a real joy to write with Crystal and Angela, and you'll enjoy meeting them and learning more about their books. Of course, we also talk about writing too. Since we all right different genres and time periods, it's fun to compare notes on how we do what we do. I hope you enjoy this edition of Book Talk! Today, Crystal Caudill joins me on the show for the second time! We discuss the third and final novel in her Hidden Hearts of the Gilded Age series. It's entitled Counterfeit Faith, deals with the Secret Service, and is set in Philadelphia. Crystal and I discuss this newest book (which releases on Tuesday, May 16), the theme of faith and doubt that plays a role in the novel, the 19th century opiate epidemic, houses of refuge, and how an unromantic person can write historical romance! Here's a description of Counterfeit Faith: As matron of Final Chance House of Refuge, Gwendolyn Ellison has dedicated her life to serving the children deemed delinquents by society. She'll protect them with everything she has. So when she suspects someone is using Final Chance for criminal deeds, she's determined to investigate and put a stop to it. But villains don't like to be crossed--and they're willing to kill to get their way. Gwendolyn knows she can't quit fighting. More than her own life is on the line if counterfeiters go free. She must find someone she can trust to help her expose the criminals and protect the children under her care. Charming and chivalrous Secret Service operative Josiah Isaacs has never been able to turn his back on a woman in trouble--and capturing counterfeiters is his job, after all. The danger he's truly worried about is his growing attraction to Gwendolyn when his heart wants to remain faithful to his deceased wife. It's always fun to introduce you to new authors, and Crystal Caudill is an author whose second and third books release this spring. She's also a coauthor with me on a novella collection that releases later this fall. It's been such fun to get to know her through writing together, and it was fun to talk with her about her books Counterfeit Hope and Counterfeit Love. Crystal writes deeply atmospheric novels that are set during the Gilded Age with the Secret Service. She is a detailed researcher and it comes out in the way readers are immersed in the time period and career. I had such fun talking games and writing process with her and think you'll really enjoy getting to know Crystal! One look at the yellowed pages of my memory box will reveal words and creativity have sought expression from the moment I held a crayon.Initially, I read and wrote to escape our family challenges and struggles. If those characters could endure dangerous adventures and hair-raising rescues, I could survive another day. My source of escape grew into a secret passion as I delved into history and crafted my owns stories of hope through danger.Even after I married and had two wonderful boys, stories flowed from my fingertips. Writing remained my sanity, but more than that, it became the tool through which God taught and spoke to me. The stories came through my fingertips, but they were marked with His fingerprints.I never dreamed it would lead to something more.In June 2015, my husband treated me to a writer's conference. I was excited to improve my writing, but I never had any intention beyond personal gratification. God's plan ended up being slightly bigger.Yes, and He continues to prove faithful in my writing. Although not easy, I obediently write. My stories are still filled with danger, struggle, and history, but they are also permeated with the hope and love of Christ. I hope they are dangerously good. Good for the heart and for the soul.Visit Crystal Caudill's website.
Today on the podcast we welcome Melody Caudill. She's the name behind Career Woman, that's currently partnering with the fabulous Lauren Records. You may recognize the last name. Melody is the daughter of Jeff Caudill from Gameface and a new band called Low Coast. All that to say, Melody recently released a song called “Patience (I Like You)” that blew me away. Jeff had been sending me her music since she began writing and I was always intrigued with how a rock star's daughter could go down the same path when most often times they rebel and do something opposite.I threw out the idea to chat with them together. Melody and I kicked Jeff out after about 20 minutes or so and got talk directly about her musical journey, writing process, her wants and dreams. For those listening, Melody is a freshman in college and way the hell ahead of how I was at her age and it was an absolute joy to hear her perspective on things in life and music. She even played Gilman Street in SF recently. Can't get any cooler than that.To learn more about Melody's music search out Career Woman on all the socials or through Lauren Records.
