Hope seems like a simple concept, but the feeling can be difficult to hold onto. And when times are difficult and chaos swirls around us, it's more important than ever. How do we find and practice hope when it's elusive? Spiritual and religious leaders rely on centuries of experience and wisdom to continually guide people back to hope, and this episode's discussion from the 2024 Aspen Ideas Festival draws from these experts. Lutheran pastor Nadia Bolz-Weber founded the House for All Sinners and Saints in Denver, and doesn't shy away from unorthodox methods of ministry. Rabbi Sharon Brous is the founder and leader of IKAR, a nondenominational Jewish congregation in Los Angeles. Humanist chaplain Greg Epstein works with the populations at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Union Theological Seminary professor and the former director of the Religion and Society Program at the Aspen Institute, Simran Jeet Singh, introduces and moderates the conversation.
Scripture: Luke 21:5–19 | Topic: Instructions for Troubling Times | by Fabien Pering Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In Part 2 of "Troubling Times," Angel and guest Nick continue their conversation about how scripture speaks into today's climate of anger and division. Using Luke 7:31–35, they contrast John the Baptist's austerity with Jesus' approach of engaging people, exploring why critics find fault regardless of how one acts. The episode encourages listeners to choose patience, kindness, and wisdom, and to reflect Christ's love amid disagreement. The hosts invite audience feedback and offer a message of prayer and hope as they prepare for Part 3.
Host Angel and guest Nick examine recent violence and political turmoil, placing today's events in historical context and highlighting the need for civil discourse. They draw on Scripture and practical steps—listening, respect, forgiveness—to encourage listeners to respond with faith, compassion, and hope.
Finding Joy in Troubling Times The host reflects on feeling drained by constant bad news and shares how Philippians 4:4 taught them to find deep, God-centered joy that stands apart from circumstances. The episode invites listeners to start their days with prayer instead of headlines, to share burdens and blessings with others, and to let faith—rather than fear—shape their outlook. Includes a guiding prayer for overflowing joy and a practical challenge to choose rejoicing daily.
New polling suggests the shutdown is as unpopular as the president, and yet many Americans don't see a path toward healing the divisions caused by a minority faction doing all it can to grab and cling to power. n this premiere episode of Season Five, co-hosts Peterson Toscano (he/him) and Sweet Miche (they/them) explore the urgent question: How do we balance peace and protest in today's world? Prophetic Voices for Troubled Times Australian Friend Greg Rolles shares his experiences with nonviolent direct action, police intimidation, and the risks of faithful disobedience. Arrested more than 25 times for his activism, Greg challenges Quakers to move beyond polite pacifism. “Peace is not the same as passivity. We think that peace is about being polite and nice and being quiet in public spaces. But peace is proactive, and it calls us to take action and take risk.” —Greg Rolles Greg's article We Are Having an Effect: The Necessity of Spiritual Resistance in Climate and Justice Activism appears in the September 2025 issue of Friends Journal (add link to article at FriendsJournal.org). You can also watch the extended interview on the Friends Journal YouTube channel (insert hyperlink). Quaker Renewal in a Fast-Moving World Jade Rockwell, pastor at West Elkton Friends Meeting in Ohio, lifts up the role of renewal and revival in Quaker practice today. “Our emphasis has shifted in the 21st century more towards being a people called to action. We're living in a time when inaction is risky. If we're not able to respond to our world, bad things can happen—and we may be morally responsible if we aren't able to be active.” —Jade Rockwell You can find more of Jade's ministry in the QuakerSpeak video, “Transforming Quakerism in Troubling Times” at QuakerSpeak.com or on the QuakerSpeak YouTube channel. Anger, Grief, and Action This month's Friends Journal book review features Richard Rohr's The Tears of Things: Prophetic Wisdom for an Age of Outrage (Convergent Books). Rohr highlights how the anger of prophets like Amos and Jeremiah matures into grief, then into transformative action. Read Wendy Cooler's full review at FriendsJournal.org (insert hyperlink). Game Recommendation In addition to books, this season introduces a new segment: recommendations beyond the bookshelf. Peterson suggests Fate of the Fellowship, a cooperative board game by Matt Leacock, creator of Pandemic. Players work together in Tolkien's Middle-earth to guide the Fellowship while resisting the growing Shadow. Learn more at BoardGameGeek or through major retailers. Listener Responses Friends share their favorite Quaker expressions—from “That of God in everyone” to “Hold you in the Light.” Eleanor from Colorado reflected, “I think of all people as a Friend or a buddy. Revelation Date: March 7, 1831 Revelation Place: Kirtland, Ohio Section 45 - Historical Background: The Lord was well aware of the perils that were pouring out upon the Saints. Joseph lamented, “Many false reports, lies, and foolish stories were published and circulated in every direction, to prevent people from investigating the work.” During these times of slander and abuse, the Lord provided revelations of comfort and peace, including section 45, which was received, as Joseph wrote, “to the joy of the Saints who had to struggle against every thing that prejudice and wickedness could invent.”. Recap: Addressed to the entire church, the Lord encourages the Saints to retain their repentance so they qualify for the mercy of forgiveness through the atonement. Soften your heart that the following revelations will be a light in the darkness. All of God's prophecies must be fulfilled, just as the destruction of the temple in old Jerusalem and the scattering of the Jews was fulfilled. There will be coming wars, commotions, fear, hate and desolating plagues that will cover the land. There will be earthquakes, desolations and warfare. The wicked will curse God and die, but the righteous will not be moved. Be not troubled because the promises to the righteous shall all be fulfilled. Christ's coming will cleanse the earth from evil. Gog and Magog will be destroyed. The Jews will see and accept Him as their Messiah. The righteous will be resurrected and Satan will be bound. The Lord prophesies of imminent war, probably the Civil War. Gather the Saints and assemble to the New Jerusalem – Zion, and sing the songs of everlasting joy.
Love to hear from you; “Send us a Text Message”The battle for religious freedom has reached new heights in Australia as New South Wales enacts legislation making it illegal to pray with someone about their sexuality—even if they explicitly request such prayer. Kurt Mahlburg, Australian writer and senior editor at The Daily Declaration, brings urgent clarity to this troubling development and its implications for believers worldwide. What sounds like dystopian fiction is now reality: Christians face potential criminal charges for practicing fundamental aspects of their faith. Yet amid this encroachment on religious liberty, something unexpected is happening. Young people across Western nations are rejecting progressive ideologies and returning to traditional values. Having witnessed the cultural chaos resulting from removing God from public life, many in Gen Z are seeking stability in time-tested principles. As Mahlburg notes, "Church attendance and belief in the Bible have essentially spiked in the younger generation" in both America and Britain. This generational shift suggests hope for cultural renewal through two pathways: spiritual revival in the traditional sense, and a grassroots return to conservative values among youth. Initiatives like the "Open Windows Letter" (where pastors pledge to defy unjust laws) and the "Australian Creed for Sexual Integrity" (uniting Christians across denominations) demonstrate that resistance is not only possible, but growing.Follow Kurt on X https://x.com/k_mahlburgRead "The future is conservative" By Kurt MahlburgRead Jack's Latest In Crisis Magazine: Young Men, Against All Odds, Are Awakening to the SacredPlease support our sponsored business: Aim Utility Advisors TJ Lally | 630-990-3400 As a leading company in the energy sourcing and managementindustry, we are committed to empowering your business with efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective energy strategies. In times of great division, disruption, and uncertainty, how can we find the ability to stay grounded? While each of us may find we have different answers, Here are a few that have been emerging for me recently:The first - remembering, in the words of one of today's guests: you don't have to do it alone. Remembering the power (and necessity) of seeking out supportive community, and friends. The second -turning to history. Gaining perspective and insight by revisiting times in the past where humans have collectively endured, and persevered in the face of tremendous adversity. The third - turning to the wisdom of elders.Seeking out the wise and caring teachers, mentors, and leaders in our communities who are further along the path and can offer guidance from where they stand. Two of these modern elders in many ways are Mark Nepo and Elizabeth Lesser.Chosen as one of OWN's SuperSoul 100, a group of inspired leaders using their gifts and voices to elevate humanity, Mark Nepo is one of the great poets and spiritual guides of our time. And bestselling author, and Co-Founder of Omega Institute, one of the world's leading conference and retreat centers, Elizabeth Lesser has had the opportunity to learn from, and collaborate with many of the greatest spiritual teachers and leaders around the world. Something she's done since Omega was first founded in 1977. I asked Elizabeth and Mark if they'd be willing to come together to engage in a rich conversation - sharing some of their own insights, practices, and ultimately what they've learned from some of their teachers about navigating troubling times. In today's conversation we'll explore:The possibility of meeting whatever is here, including the grand challenges we are facing, with greater wisdom, balance, and love. For more on Mark please visit marknepo.comFor more on Elizabeth check out elizabethlesser.org, and for more on Omega Institute please visit: eomega.orgI was reminded in this conversation that perhaps the most potent way we might find our way through these times, And back to each other,Is by remembering that at some level we are all made of the same stuff. Each one of us, a human being - part of a larger whole.A reminder which in Mark's words took this form:“When we come back into direct connection with life,There's a reverence for life. And when we have a reverence for life we can't do harm.”Did you find this episode inspiring? In today's episode (116), host Rebecca explores the raw emotions and complex questions that arise when confronted with the harsh realities of evil in our world as we have recently been confronted with the depths of human depravity, particularly in light of recent heartbreaking events involving the Bibas family in Israel. This has led to some in the Christian community experiencing a crisis of faith as they struggle to reconcile a good and sovereign God with the existence of such evil. Today's episode offers helpful and encouraging insights into the Bible's teachings on evil and God's ultimate victory over it through the cross and resurrection. “I'm learning what I need to unlearn.” ~Bhakti Ishaya Today I interview my first spiritual teacher I studied with in 2016 and whom I still call upon whenever I need support. He helped me start the journey to letting go and going inward In order to fully understand Enlightenment, you take a look at its opposite, which is ignorance. Ignorance is ignoring something that already exists. Because we are born human, we are already enlightened. All we need to do is dissolve the barriers that keep us from recognizing that. And Ascension does that. Ascension dissolves stresses of life so that we are able to experience more and more of who we truly are in each moment. Many people have heard the phrase, “We're in this world, but not of this world.” We refer to the still, silent place within as the Ascendent, because that word can't offend anybody. The practice is designed for everybody, globally, in all cultures. Ascension has no belief system or dogma, and therefore does not interfere with one's religious or spiritual practice. Stress in our lives stems from when we're young. For instance, I had three older, adopted sisters. When I was three or four years old, they told me and my younger brother, “Well, we were chosen. Mom and Dad just got stuck with you.” These kinds of things create a lasting imprint on a person's psyche. Even if we grow up in perfect, loving families, we still go to school. We experience judgements and comparisons and all kinds of conflict. And then comes the hormonal turmoil of puberty. By the time we are adults, our ego-mind has created this “individual” that is supposed to be an adult and know what to do. Ascension can help dissolve all of these constructs, judgments and then some. Optimal Performance: Ascension can be the impetus for success in business. Magdalena Grace, one of my students, wrote, “I did so well the first 6 months after I learned to Ascend that the company bought me a brand new Mercedes.” And I have created even better life changing results since then! We will talk about ascension as a practice AND how to find/create inner peace. We will also have a meditation exercise that will help you find that peace and stillness on this show! Have you been feeling unsettled, worried or troubled the past few weeks? As a highly sensitive soul, living a world that feels increasingly unsettled, it is more important than ever that you take excellent care of yourself! One of the best forms of self-care is taking care of your MIND. Keeping your mind calm and focused on spiritual truths is key! I have been re-reading the writings of Paramahansa Yogananda to help me find peace during these times. What does he recommend? Meditation. In this episode, I share a passage from Yogananda's book, To Be Victorious in Life, to help you remember how to respond to the external world, AND how not to. I also share some simple tips you can start doing today to help you feel better. And if you want to learn more about the upcoming training, Meditate Like a Mystic, click here to find out more. Key Learnings: Highly sensitive souls need to take better care of themselves during turbulent times like these. The most important thing to do is develop a meditation practice that fosters a sense of inner peace and calmness. Yogananda's teachings were written and taught during the first half of the 20th century, during the Great Depression and World War 2. Talk about an unsettling time! That is why his teachings are SO helpful for the times we are experiencing now. If his students could meditate in a bomb shelter in England during the Blitz, you KNOW they are powerful teachings! Some simple things you can do to take care of yourself: a) Limit your intake of sensationalized news b) increase your time out in nature c) increase time reading and studying spiritual truths d) take inspired action from a place of peace and calmness “Meditation is the key to inner peace, especially in troubling times like these.” Click here to register for Mother Mary's Meditate Like a Mystic Program Click here to purchase To Be Victorious in Life by Paramahansa Yogananda Click here to join the Magnify Your Miracles Membership If you love the image on the wall behind me of Mother Mary Blessing the World, you can order your own museum quality copy at www.deepaliu.com
