Have you ever thought that you were happier when you were thinner/ prettier/ younger/ etc? In a culture that values thinness and beauty, it's hard not to believe that your value lies in your appearance. We buy into arbitrary beauty ideals and false promises, killing ourselves to look a certain way. In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Lindsay Kite, co-author of the book More Than a Body and co-director of the nonprofit Beauty Redefined, to talk about healing body-image struggles. You will learn... - the missing piece of the puzzle when we talk about body-image - how the male gaze affects body-image - why losing weight and changing your appearance never solves the problem - ways to combat toxic beauty ideals and build body -image resilience Remember: keeping up with beauty ideals is a losing game. Adhering to society's definition of beauty does NOT buy love, confidence, health, or happiness. Usually, it only exacerbates body-image struggles. Dr. Lindsay Kite is co-author of the book More Than a Body: Your Body Is an Instrument, Not an Ornament (2020, HarperCollins) and co-director of the nonprofit Beauty Redefined, alongside her identical twin sister Lexie Kite. In the nearly fifteen years I've been working in the personal development space, I have to say that one of the most recurring challenges I see women face is reckoning with changes in their bodies and what that means for their sense of self-worth. Unless you were magically able to escape the messages we are inundated with in our patriarchal society, it's likely that you've had to navigate the constant, relentless, and radically unforgiving demand placed on our bodies to be perfect. And, Honey, I am certainly not exempt. In recent years, I've personally delved into learning more about how our notions of beauty have come to pass, how “Big Diet” ensures we all hate our bodies, and the truth about fatness and health. I am certainly no expert, but it has become abundantly clear that there are billion-dollar industries profiting off our insecurities. And, many of them invent new insecurities for us. How generous. In this episode, I look at some things you can actually DO, both internally and externally, to start cultivating a more loving relationship with your body. I also share some scripts of specific phrases you can say when you find yourself dealing with your bestie yammering about their new diet or if your aunt keeps making comments about your body at the family dinner. If you've struggled to know what action you can take to feel more comfortable in your skin, you'll definitely want a listen. Grab a pen and paper because this one is loaded with tangible action steps and resources. This pod explores: Analyzing what you are consuming on a daily basis and how that influences how you feel about your body (Like, what ads you do constantly see on social media?) How commenting on people's bodies (even if you don't know them or don't really like them) can be a huge step backward for your body love journey Some of my favorite activities to generate a more loving relationship with your body A handful of scripts to shutdown inappropriate or offensive comments about your body, other people's bodies, or diet culture altogether HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! Happy Monday Floss Fans! Welcome to the start of a brand new mini series. Today and for the next three weeks, Floss will be chatting to an awesome cadre of guests about Body Image. This week it's the wonderful Dr. Lindsay Kite and Dr. Lexie Kite, identical twins, co-authors of the book More Than a Body: Your Body Is an Instrument, Not an Ornament and directors of the nonprofit company Beauty Redefined. Their instagram is on fire with body image analysis and they use their doctorates, their platform and their book to espouse essential wisdom on the ways in which we're all conditioned by capitalist patriarchy to think our perceived desirability is the most important thing about us. Floss, Lindsay and Lexie chat about the male gaze, body resilience vs body positivity and beauty standards. So many of us feel such pressure to conform to certain ideals that unpacking our own autonomy over those choices becomes increasingly complicated. We're taught to be so self-critical of the way that we look that we forget to be grateful for all the marvellous things our bodies can do. Later they deep dive into sex, and summer and how truly inhabiting your body can allow you to reclaim your rage. “Prettiness is not the rent you pay to exist in the world as a woman”- Erin Mckean “Women Don't Owe You Pretty” - Florence Given Original theme music by Black Honey. If you operate in a femme body or identify as female, it's highly likely you've found yourself contending with a litany of body image “issues”. I put issues in quotes because the things that we worry about, and subsequently own as our “issues”, are purposely manufactured to commodify and exploit our bodies. In essence we're programmed to have “issues”. They're given to us. For example, we used to never worry about having body hair. Like, not even a thing. Then, Gillette pops up like, “Hey, we wanna make some money, so how ‘bout you start to think having hair on your legs is gross and give us money to fix it.” Think about how many products in your pantry, medicine cabinet, dresser drawers, shower, and bathroom vanity have become vaults for a myriad of products designed to change the way you look. Why? Because we have bought into the societal belief that women are valuable based solely on their bodies. And, we have an unbelievably limited view of which bodies are acceptable and permissible. But what if your body was an instrument and not an ornament? Whaaaaaa? Yeah. On this week's show I dial up Dr. Lexie Kite who, along with her twin sister, Dr. Lindsay Kite, has developed a social movement to redesign how we, as women, view beauty, body image, and the body positive movement. This conversation is a call to arms to examine the myopic lens through which we've been conditioned to see our bodies. Why? So we can see the breadth of our value. Because you, my friend, are so much more than a body. Get ready to wear a hole in this episode, because it will shake you at your core. In the best way possible. This pod explores: Dr. Lexie's mantra you need to start using immediately… like, yesterday How we've been grossly misinformed about what positive body image looks like What it looks like to practice body image resilience How much of the body positive movement has sorely misdiagnosed the problem (Hint: How focusing on “all bodies are beautiful” may be missing the mark… What!? I know.) HIRE ME TO SPEAK AT YOUR EVENT! ACCESS ‘ENOUGHNESS'. POWERFULLY NAVIGATE FEAR. SPEAK UP FOR YOURSELF. I am so excited to introduce Dr Lindsay Kite! She and her identical twin co-authored the book More Than a Body: Your Body Is an Instrument, Not an Ornament and co-director the nonprofit Beauty Redefined. They both received PhDs from the University of Utah in the study of female body image and have become leading experts in body image resilience and media literacy. Lindsay and Lexie help girls and women recognize and reject the harmful effects of objectification in their lives through their significant social media reach, online Body Image Resilience course and facilitator program for dieticians and therapists, their popular book (More Than a Body), and regular speaking engagements for thousands of people of all ages. Their work centers on the truth that positive body image isn't believing your body looks good, it's knowing your body is good, regardless of how it looks. This refined definition of positive body image provides the foundation for their work to arm people with the tools to build resilience in a culture that objectifies and commodifies bodies. I ask Lindsay how they started into this work and we talk about reassessing how we think about ourselves and our bodies. I ask her the following questions: How to talk to the next generation about their bodies. What is the difference between body positivity and body neutrality? I feel like your book "More Than a Body" is a necessary read every year for the rest of my life, do you feel the same? Valuing ourselves beyond what we look like isn't just about weight, it's about aging, it's about everything our body goes through. Let's talk about that. Let's talk about the word fat and people's reactions to the word, including shattering the world views around fatness and fatphobia. If you could narrow the book down to one major takeaway, what would it be? Is there hope for the next generation? Are we doing better?
Aleen is rejoined by sisters Dr. Lindsay Kite and Dr. Lexie Kite, co-authors of the book More Than a Body: Your Body Is an Instrument, Not an Ornament for this week's Dear DST. The conversation kicks off with Lexie, Lindsay and Aleen sharing their Non-Scale Wins. Next, they dig into some listener emails about breaking bad habits and how we can fight off the peer pressure that some of us feel to keep up with the "norm" of beauty standards (cough cough, botox and fillers).
Amy is joined by Dr. Lindsay Kite to discuss the burden of beauty standards, self-objectification, uncomfortable compliments, and how we can strive to escape the cycle of normative discontent. This week, twin sisters Dr. Lexie Kite and Dr. Lindsay Kite join me for a discussion on body image resilience. As women, we've been conditioned to care about how we look and as such, become fixated on our beauty and body. And for many women, only when we feel we have conformed, do we feel confident. In addition to informing us how to step into body image resilience and away from body shame, Lexie and Lindsay offer their insight about topics such as self-objectification, body shame, and how internalized misogyny is central to our self-perceptions. “Body image resilience provides the opportunity to see the trigger as a stepping stone instead of a burden you carry around the rest of your life and cope in the same ways you've always had.” Dr. Lexie Kite Lexie and Lindsay received their PhDs from the University of Utah. Their academic research on media studies and body image inspired them to establish the non-profit Beauty Redefined in 2009 (while concluding their co-written master's thesis and beginning their doctoral research) to help women recognize and reject harmful messages about their bodies, worth, and potential, and redefine the meaning and value of beauty in their lives. In this episode you'll hear: Lexie and Lindsay's book, More Than a Body: Your Body Is an Instrument, Not an Ornament, takes on the topics of body image positivity and a reclamation of a woman's body. They share what inspired them to write this book. (6:30) Body image resilience: what it is and why it is important for women to work to raise theirs. (8:35) Why it is important to normalize the diversity of all bodies. (28:25) Many of us are disordered eaters and we don't know it because it has been normalized in our culture. (36:12) We can prove the worst fears about ourselves are wrong. (39:44) The first step towards body image resilience includes taking inventory of your environment. (51:41) http://andreaowen.com/412

In this week's episode, Utah's First Lady Abby Cox is joined by Dr. Lexie Kite (Co-author of More Than a Body: Your Body Is an Instrument, Not an Ornament) to talk about how the media has distorted our vision of what beauty is, why it's important to understand how you feel about your body right at this moment in order to build steps towards resilience, and how to cope with shame. Then Dr. Kite dives into why you need to believe that you are more than your body, in what ways self-objectification could be holding you back from other aspects of life, and why body positivity is a fundamental aspect of positive mental health. Lastly, we talk about some of the self-objectification issues that are associated with Utah's distinct culture, how many women find their power in their bodies and their beauty, and how enforcing strict dress codes can have a negative impact on our children's mental health. She struggled with depression. After having her second kid, she started to hit some harder points. She was volunteering a lot of time at her church, and she decided to ask to be released. It was a good time to do that because a lot of hard things happened right after that. She got some help and medication, and she made it through. She thought that she had the whole depression thing figured out, but after having her third kid she had some really hard depression come back. When their third baby was 6 months old, Laura got self-inflicted sickness from stress. She decided that something needed to change. Things didn't change overnight. She started to believe that her diet was the problem and she became obsessed with clean eating. She went to an eating disorder clinic and she learned about intuitive eating. This is what makes you feel happy and healthy. Your body already knows what to do. Eat as kids do.Eat what makes you feel satisfied. This is not a fad diet and it's against diet culture. Diets have external motivation and tell you what to do. Intuitive eating is listening to your internal body and giving it what it wantsYou need to re-learn how to interpret what your body is telling you.Pillars of Intuitive eatingIn Laura's coaching sessions she wants to help her clients get from point A to point B. Sarah and Adrienne Martini have an intriguing conversation with Lexie Kite, Ph.D., co-founder (along with her identical twin sister!) of the non-profit More Than a Body and co-author of the new book called More Than a Body: Your Body Is an Instrument, Not an Ornament. Lexie offers insight and advice on: -building body image resilience (and what it is!); -setting goals based on what your body can do, not what it looks like; -banishing the belief you need to look a certain way for anyone else; -helping plant a media-literacy seed for your children (and yourself); and, -silencing any internal self-objectifying voices as you emerge into a post-pandemic world.
